As of March 31, 2016 | Errors excepted and subject to change We are aiming high – and have done so for the past 130 years. 2015 was the most successful year in our history. We sold almost two million vehicles – and we think we can do even better. This year, we are celebrating the automobile’s 130th anniversary, and we are focusing more than ever before on the expertise that has always been our company’s driving force. Even more innovation. Our goal is to provide Mercedes customers with “more” in every vehicle segment: more comfort, more safety, more styling, and more efficiency. That’s our conception of “premium.” It’s based on innovative ideas that range from digitization to autonomous driving. That way we are once again emphasizing our claim to leadership in the year of the new E-Class. And even more emotion. Although there are many rational reasons why someone should opt for a Mercedes-Benz, the decision is ultimately a matter of the heart. In 2016 we are appealing to people’s emotional side with a whole series of new dream cars – from the legendary SL to the S-Class convertible. After all, sportiness is just as much a core feature of the Mercedes-Benz brand as innovation. I am convinced that the fascination of automobiles is greater and more diverse today than at any time since the car was invented 130 years ago. And no other brand exemplifies this fascination as much as Mercedes-Benz. Sincerely, Dieter Zetsche Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars 2 Daimler at a Glance Daimler AG is one of the world’s most successful automotive companies. With its divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars, Daimler Trucks, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Daimler Buses and Daimler Financial Services, the Daimler Group is one of the biggest producers of premium cars and the world’s biggest manufacturer of commercial vehicles with a global reach. Daimler Financial Services provides financing, leasing, fleet management, insurance, financial investments, credit cards, and innovative mobility services. The company’s founders, Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, made history with the invention of the automobile in the year 1886. As a pioneer of automotive engineering, Daimler continues to shape the future of mobility today: The Group’s focus is on innovative and green technologies as well as on safe and superior automobiles that appeal and fascinate. Daimler consequently invests in the development of alternative drive trains with the long-term goal of emission-free driving: from hybrid vehicles to electric vehicles powered by battery or fuel cell. Furthermore, the company follows a consistent path towards accidentfree driving and intelligent connectivity all the way to autonomous driving. This is just one example of how Daimler willingly accepts the challenge of meeting its responsibility towards society and the environment. Daimler sells its vehicles and services in nearly all the countries of the world and has production facilities in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. Its current brand portfolio includes, in addition to the world’s most valuable premium automotive brand, Mercedes-Benz, as well as Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes me, the brands smart, Freightliner, Western Star, BharatBenz, FUSO, Setra and Thomas Built Buses, and Daimler Financial Services’ brands: Mercedes-Benz Bank, Mercedes-Benz Financial, Daimler Truck Financial, moovel, car2go and mytaxi. The company is listed on the stock exchanges of Frankfurt and Stuttgart (stock exchange symbol DAI). In 2015, the Group sold around 2.9 million vehicles and employed a workforce of 284,015 people; revenue totalled €149.5 billion and EBIT amounted to €13.2 billion. 3 Daimler at a Glance DAIMLER AT A GLANCE EBIT Value added Net profit Earnings per share (in EUR) Investments in property, plant, and equipment Research and development expenditure thereof capitalized development expenditure 2015 13,186 5,675 8,711 7.87 5,075 6,564 1,804 2014 10,752 4,416 7,290 6.51 4,844 5,680 1,148 Amounts in millions of EUR Revenue Western Europe thereof Germany NAFTA thereof United States Asia thereof China Other markets By divisions Mercedes-Benz Cars Daimler Trucks Mercedes-Benz Vans Daimler Buses Daimler Financial Services 2015 149,467 49,570 22,001 47,653 41,920 33,744 14,684 18,500 2014 129,872 43,722 20,449 38,025 33,310 29,446 13,294 18,679 83,809 37,578 11,473 4,113 18,962 73,584 32,389 9,968 4,218 15,991 Amounts in millions of EUR Employees (December 31) Total Germany United States Rest of world 2015 284,015 170,454 24,607 88,954 2014 279,972 168,909 22,833 88,230 By divisions1 Mercedes-Benz Cars Daimler Trucks Mercedes-Benz Vans Daimler Buses Daimler Financial Services Group Functions & Services1 136,941 86,391 22,639 18,147 9,975 9,922 135,553 87,628 21,598 17,473 8,878 8,842 Due to the realignment resulting from the Customer Dedication initiative, the workforce numbers that were previously reported in the section “Vehicle Sales” have been contained in the respective divisions in 2014 and 2015. Our pledge: For our customers, we want to develop the world’s safest, most comfortable, and most efficient automobiles and flexibly manufacture them in top quality within our global production network. Wherever needed, we adapt the design and equipment of our vehicles to the special customer requirements in the various markets. At the same time, we are continuing to conduct in-depth research in order to create innovations that underscore our claim to leadership when it comes to automotive engineering. As the inventor of the automobile, Mercedes-Benz is investing, for example, in the further development of alternative drive systems that range from plug-in hybrids and battery-electric cars all the way to fuel-cell technology. Moreover, we’re forging ahead with research into autonomous driving. MBC in Brief Mercedes-Benz Cars at a Glance – Introduction 8 Mercedes-Benz: Unit sales of the core brand, Mercedes-Benz, rose to the new record level of 1,880,100 vehicles in 2015. Despite difficult conditions in several markets, the pace of growth increased significantly once again as compared to the previous year, as sales grew by +15 % (2014: +11 %). We are the number one manufacturer in the premium segment in Germany, Portugal, Japan, Australia, Taiwan, and Canada. We also significantly improved our position in China. The main contributions to the growth in unit sales came from the C-Class and our new SUVs. In 2015 Mercedes-Benz Cars once again expanded its range of models within the framework of its “Mercedes-Benz 2020” growth strategy. The most wide-ranging product portfolio in our history enabled us to attract new customer groups. With four new or revised models, we updated almost our entire range of vehicles in the growing SUV segment, to which we also added the GLE Coupé. Other new additions are the CLA Shooting Brake, the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, the new C-Class Coupé, the Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman, and the S-Class convertible, which will be launched in the spring of 2016. The world’s most intelligent business sedan, the new E-Class, celebrated its premiere in January 2016 and will also be introduced to the markets beginning in spring. Mercedes-AMG: The AMG brand claim “Driving Performance“ reflects the two core competencies of Mercedes-AMG: The ability to provide an unparalleled driving experience and the ability to serve as a driving force for shaping the high-performance segment. The AMG sports car brand enhances the fascination of Mercedes-Benz. The brand’s dynamic vehicles especially attract young and sporty customers to the brand with the star. AMG models such as the new C 63 Coupé differ extensively from their production model cousins in terms of both engineering and appearance, thus reinforcing the authenticity and independent identity of the AMG brand. Mercedes-AMG is positioning itself even more aggressively as a dynamic MERCEDES-BENZ CARS IN BRIEF 9 smart: The new smart fortwo and forfour models, which began to be delivered in Europe in late 2014, were introduced in China, the United States, and Japan in 2015. This was one reason why sales of smart-brand vehicles increased by 31 % to 121,400 units. A third model – the smart convertible – was then launched at the end of 2015. The first vehicles will be delivered in March 2016. The new smart convertible also makes a big impression with its compact dimensions and unparalleled small turning circle. The production network: In order to meet the production targets of our growth strategy, we are continually refining our flexible and highly efficient global production network. We aim for top quality at all production locations and also seek to ensure we can respond quickly to market fluctuations and changed customer requirements. We have agreed with employee representatives on future plans that are currently being implemented at nearly all Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plants in Germany. These plans will ensure the international competitiveness of these facilities and also safeguard jobs at the various locations. The billions of euros we are investing here underscore the importance of our plants in Germany as centers of expertise for global production. We are also expanding our international production capacities. For example, we will begin building the C-Class and the GLA MBC in Brief sports car and high-performance brand with the GT, which is intended to be the first member of an entire family of models. The sports car was developed by Mercedes-AMG completely independently and it clearly demonstrates the innovation and development expertise in Affalterbach. True to its philosophy of performance with responsibility, Mercedes-AMG is striving to become even more efficient with new engine technologies and a comprehensive lightweight design approach. AMG models already have some of the lowest emissions in their respective segments. 10 compact SUV at a new car plant in Iracemápolis, Brazil, in 2016. Last year, Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance also laid the cornerstone for a new joint venture production plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico. This facility will begin to produce Mercedes-Benz compact models in 2018. Within the framework of the “digital transformation,” we are working intensely on the creation of a smart factory that stands out through its resource efficiency as well as its ability to make rapid adjustments and integrate customers and partners into value creation processes. Networked production systems, a completely digital process chain, the intelligent use of production data, and new models for human-machine cooperation will make manufacturing even more flexible and efficient in the future. At the same time, we are optimizing our employees’ workstations on the basis of ergonomic criteria and creating the conditions necessary for successful intergenerational cooperation in our production organization. China: In 2015 we renewed and expanded our range of products for customers in China by offering 15 new or updated vehicles. Important new products here were the GLA, GLC, and GLE SUVs, the Mercedes-Maybach, and the new smart models. We also added more than 50 new sales outlets to our sales network in China, which now comprises approximately 500 dealerships nationwide. With the start of compact-vehicle production in the form of the GLA, the plant in Beijing has become the only Mercedes-Benz facility in the world to manufacture both front and rear-wheel drive car models, as well as engines, at one site. In October 2015, we began producing an additional volume series – the GLC SUV – for the local market in China. Our new research and development center in China ensures we will be able to address customer requirements in the country in an even more targeted manner in the future. During the year under review, we significantly improved our market position in China. All in all, we were able to increase sales of Mercedes-Benz brand vehicles by 41 % to 387,400 units, even as the overall car market grew at a much slower pace. Best Customer Experience: Within the framework of the “Best Customer Experience” marketing and sales strategy, Mercedes-Benz is aligning its sales and marketing organization with customer requirements. In doing so, it is offering products that are tailored to individuals’ lifestyles. The goal here is to address new target groups, while at the same time maintaining the brand loyalty of established customers. To this end, Mercedes-Benz is utilizing new sales channels and digital portals as innovative interfaces to the brand. The multichannel approach links different sales formats with digital elements, thereby supplementing the services offered at traditional Mercedes-Benz dealerships and showrooms. The centerpiece of Best Customer Experience is Mercedes me, which offers comprehensive personal- 11 ized access to the world of Mercedes-Benz (www.mercedes.me). Mercedes me is also the name of a new chain of stores Mercedes-Benz has opened in inner-city locations. A total of five Mercedes me stores have opened around the world since 2014. A large number of temporary formats, such as pop-up stores at special events, have also been created to offer additional touchpoints, and more than 1,800 sales employees have received training in the new job profiles for the retail sector. In addition, the “She’s Mercedes” initiative was launched in 2015 so that Mercedes-Benz can focus even more strongly on the needs and wishes of women. It aims to also make Mercedes-Benz the most attractive luxury automobile brand for women as well by 2020 and to substantially increase the share of women customers. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz expanded its industry-typical vehicle configurator. Instead of model series, engines, equipment, and colors, customers now select their individual lifestyles – from the way they furnish their homes to their preferences with regard to traveling, music, and sports. In line with the selected lifestyle, the configurator then recommends a variety of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, including their equipment. CO2 emissions: Our new engines and extremely fuel-efficient model variants enabled us to substantially reduce the average CO2 emissions of the cars we sold in the European Union in 2015 – from 129 g/km to 123 g/km. This means we have achieved our 2016 target of 125 g/km ahead of schedule. That achievement was made possible in large part by our new compact-class models, the new and significantly more economical C-Class models, and our efficient plug-in hybrid drive systems.
