The water
realm
Amidst the Brenta Dolomites, the Adamello Massif, the
Presanella Massif, the Ortles-Cevedale Group, and the
Maddalene Range, the Val di Sole (“Valley of the Sun”)
lies with its 50 summits over 3,000 meters high, its glaciers and ruddy promontories. Val di Sole is truly a green
oasis in the northwest of Trentino, between Lake Garda
and South Tyrol. More than a third of the valley is under
nature protection: The Stelvio National Park in the north,
and the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park in the south. A real
pearl of the Alps, with countless options for hiking and
sports activities for every taste: From sports disciplines
requiring a high level of physical fitness, all the way to
adrenaline-charged activities like rafting, hydrospeed, canyoning, mountain climbing, etc.
But that’s not everything! Val di Sole also features a welldistributed network of hotels, B&B, vacation apartments,
camping sites and Alpine huts. Thus, every individual taste
and style of vacationing is satisfied. You can be sure of a
really pleasant holiday, where every day is a new day of
discovery.

Water is another predominant element in Val di Sole,
cascading throughout the entire valley. The primary place of
interest is the valley floor, where the famous river “Fiume
Noce” travels along its length, a paradise for water sports
lovers. The Noce is continually met by the small torrents
and streams which fall from the great heights on either
side, their pure waters merging with that of the greater
river. In the higher elevations sit the wonderful mountain
lakes, such as Rotondo Lake, Corvo Lake, The Marmot Lake
and many others that all owe their existence to the glacier
movements thousands of years ago.
The year-long snow and ice deposits on the highest
mountain peaks are crucial for the flow of water, for life in
general and for the sustainability of the natural environment.
In the Noce River and the smaller streams such as The
Vermigliana, The Meledrio, and The Rabbies, as well as in
the numerous lakes, one can fish several trout species such
as the brook and rainbow trout. Fishing licenses are required
in order to fish as well as a permit for foreign visitors,
(information can be obtained from the tourist offices in the
valley), and the ticket that can be purchased from various
authorized points in the valley. The water that flows from
Val di Sole is particularly well known for its therapeutic
properties. From the peaks of the Ortles–Cevedale mountain
chain, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, spring the
waters which are used by the historic Thermal spas in Peio
and Rabbi.

An abundance of
fresh water!
The alpine lakes
Val di Sole has a rich and unique abundance of water, with a
multitude of lakes and springs that embellish this spectacular
landscape. There are in fact almost 100 lakes, a great
number indeed when you consider that there are 297 lakes in
the whole Trentino region. The total surface area of the lakes
in Val di Sole are equal to less than a single square kilometer,
(78.4 hectares). Together, all of the lakes in Trentino occupy
35 square kilometers. Most of the lakes are small enclosures of
water, but they are of course always fascinating. A large number
of the lakes are found among the Ortles – Cevedale mountain
chain, between the Peio and Rabbi
valleys in the Stelvio National Park.
The titanic glacial forces, present
both at high altitudes and in the
lower part of the valleys, have left
these lustrous blue pearls for us to
enjoy. In many cases there are little
strings of lakes, such as at the foot
of the Monticelli mountain chain and
at Strìno (Tonàle), Montózzo (higher
part of Val del Monte, Pèio), Corvo
Lake and Sternài (Val di Rabbi).
The lakes represent one of the most important features of Val
di Sole, the most important being:
Presena Lakes (2.180m): reachable from the Tonale Pass with
the Paradiso cabin-lift.
Val Strino and Montozzo Lakes (2.600-2.800m): scene of the
Great War.
From Barco Lake (1.904m) in a forested enclosure to Venezia
Lake (2.050m) with a view of the Presanella.
Fazzon Lake (1.300m): a panoramic point reachable by car.
Pian Palù Lake (1.830m): an artificial lake above Peio Fonti.
Careser Lakes (2.460m): an interesting route
to this lake in the Stelvio National Park.
Sternai Lakes (2.480m): the glacial lakes
near the Dorigoni mountain hut.
Corvo Lake (2.460m): home of the rare and
sought after rainbow trout.
Rotondo Lake (2.424m): of volcanic origin,
amongst the deepest in Trentino.
Malghetto Lakes of Mezzana (2.039m): from
Marilleva 1400 towards the Croz del Mezdì.
(rock)
Cima Vesa Lakes (2.200m): in the Maddalene
mountain group.

What is a biolake?
A biolake is much more than just a swimming pool: it is
a natural and eco-sustainable swimming area where
aquatic plants purify the water instead of chemicals such
as chlorine. The principle method of purifying the water
stems from an entirely natural biological method where
plants and micro-organisms break down the nutrients in
the water without the use of chemicals.
The biolake in Monclassico
The Monclassico biolake is made up of a swimming lake,
(of around 500 m2 with a maximum depth of 3 meters),
and an aquatic zone dedicated to aquatic plants, (oxygenating plants, shade plants, primrose, equisetum, phragmites,
water lilies and many more) and microorganisms that help to purify the
water.
THE RESULT? You can have fun
in a swimming pool that does not
damage the environment and at
the same time enjoy swimming in
fresh water, pleasant to the skin
and that does not cause any allergies, with the average temperature
being around 26-27°C.

Immerse yourself in the
traditions of the mountain
Among the 14 municipalities and 50 villages in the valley, you can still find genuine traditions and tastes for a
made to measure holiday.
A holiday in Val di Sole is more
than just a jump into the spectacular natural environment of the
Alps. Life is not only found in
the forests and mountains but
also down in the heart of the
valleys or in the small sunny villages clinging to the tops of the
valleys. Reserved but honest and
sincere people, that due to their
frugal and essential past has led
them to maintain a deep sense of
attachment for their territory, a
radical sense of self-government
and a determined sense of responsibility that places the needs of
the community first. Together with
a strong history of volunteering in
both a social and cultural sense,
these values reflect the spirit of
the valley, prevalent also in the
tourism sector, which contribCaldes
utes to a holiday that is tailor made for all.
Immersing yourself into the daily life of the small towns
and villages will do wonders for your spirit and soul as you
rediscover simplicity, spontaneity, and a direct contact with
the people of the valley that unfortunately has become very
rare in the big cities.

The fountains
There are around 250 fountains in Val di Sole, that can
be found throughout every village and town in the area.
Before water was available in each dwelling, fountains
were extremely important and prevalent in all villages.
They were also used as washing areas where
everyone could gather to wash their laundry.
The fountains therefore had an important social role in the community, becoming a meeting place where people could discuss the latest
news or just meet to have a chat while doing
the washing. This characteristic is now part of
the past, but fountains still represent a simple yet typical urban and architectural element
that allows communities to express themselves
in an ornamental and artistic manner. They remain beautiful timepieces that not only satisfy
the eye but quench our thirst on hot summer days, taking us back to our youth. To use
the words of the famous German writer, Johann
Wolfgang Goethe (“The Sorrows of Young Werther”)
“He who is a stranger to these sensations has
never really enjoyed cool repose at the side of
a fountain after the fatigue of a weary summer
day.”

Towards the Larcher al Cevedale mountain hut
Val di Sole encompasses an enormous area under nature protection, affording you a marvelous opportunity to renew your
strength and refresh your spirit. In both the Stelvio National Park (which includes the two side valleys of Peio and
Rabbi) and the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park (which extends from Dimaro towards Folgarida-Madonna di Campiglio),
guided excursions are conducted almost daily from June till September, including nighttime strolls, guided tours of
the Venetian sawmill, to the Alpine dairies (where you can watch milk and cheese being produced), botanical study trails,
mountain climbing, and glacier crossings. More information, phone: 0463.901280.
The Stelvio
National Park
The Adamello-Brenta
Nature Park
…is the largest natural protection area in the Alpine
Region, and completely encompasses the Ortles-Cevedale
Massif. The part that belongs to Trentino extends
across the Peio Valley and Rabbi Valley – here
you’ll find a rural populace composed mostly
of farmers living in little villages with a typical architecture nestled on the mountainsides.
The unspoilt natural wilderness is rich in different kinds of trees, flowers,
minerals, and fauna including
elks, mountain goats, hares, the
marmot, ermines, eagles, and that
most-majestic predatory bird of the
Val di Peio
Alps, the lammergeyer (Gypaetus
barbatus).
The Adamello-Brenta Nature Park is the largest natural protection area in the province of Trentino, and is generally
recognized as being the last Alpine refuge
of the Brown Bear (Ursus arctos). Besides
its more than 80 lakes and the Adamello
Glacier (one of Europe’s largest), it was the
first in Europe to receive the prized Park
Certificate. The park is rich in flora and
fauna, while the legendary stone towers in
the Empire of the Dolomites are a unique
attraction.

The alpine world
Val di Sole is an unparalled location for hiking and high-altitude Alpine tours in the midst of an exciting landscape of enormous natural
beauty. The elevation varies from 700 meters above sea-level in the valley to 3,700 meters at the highest summits. The three most important mountain groups which surround the valley are the Ortles-Cevedale Group in the north, the Adamello-Brenta Group in the west,
and the Brenta Dolomites in the southwest. All of the hiking trails are kept in the best condition and feature red-white symbols and
corresponding trail numbers in black. But choosing from among the many interesting paths in Val di Sole can be difficult! The enormous
Alpine region surrounding the valley offers innumerable alternatives both for experts and less-ambitious hikers. You’ll find not only tours
with different levels of difficulty and rockface-climbing opportunities, panoramic trails amongst majestic mountain tops and giant glaciers, but also exciting trekking tours on simple and yet fascinating nature study paths. The alpine guides of “Val di Sole” Italian School
of Alpinism and Ski Alpinism (phone: 0463.901151, www.guidealpinevaldisole.it) offer a wide program of nature study tours through
the parks, high-altitude tours, mountain-climbing expeditions, free-climbing, climbing, and classes for climbing and Alpine climbing.
You’ll find information brochures, in english, with details on the great number of hiking trails in the tourist information offices.

Rafting on the Fiume Noce
Rafting: adventure and nature
What is rafting?
An extreme form of sport, or something extremely funfilled for young and old, alike? The answer is simple:
Rafting is an exciting whitewater ride on board of an inflatable raft designed especially for this type of sport.
Rafting is one of the most popular sports enjoyed in
the Val di Sole, and can honestly be called one of the
most entertaining and enjoyable sport activities available
here – provided that all safety precautions are strictly
observed. Rafting is a sport for everyone, requiring no
preparatory classes or special abilities. You can start right
away by boarding a raft waiting for you on the shores
of the torrential Fiume Noce – after all of the necessary
safety measures have already been taken, of course. The
inflatable rafts are built to withstand all of the water’s
topsy-turvy motions, and feature reinforced, independently-inflated walls. A crew usually consists of four to six
people, plus the leader. Before casting off, you’ll be given
theoretical instruction on all important technical details.
If possible, several rafts travel together, with a short distance between them. The crew must follow the precise
orders of the “captain” to shift their weight as needed.
During this exciting and thrilling ride, the captain leads
the crew down this magnificent riverine landscape of the
Val di Sole. Trips can be booked both for groups and individual travelers who can form a crew together with other
participants.

Peddle in complete freedom
35 kilometers of bicycle path
Train + Bike = Dolomiti Express
When?
At the latest, from the 28th of June to the 6th of September.
How does it work?
Rent your bike for a whole day or for 5 hours of your choice
and enjoy the many cycling paths and trails of the valley,
as well as taking advantage of the train specially modified
to carry 40 bikes on the Mostizzolo - Mezzana and return
run. You can also return your bike at a different point from
where you hired it and return to your lodging using the
Trentino Trasporti train or bus available in Val di Sole.
Tickets are available for an entire day, for 5 hours of your
choice between 8.30am and 7.30pm, as well as a “family”
ticket.
The World Championship was not
an arrival, but a departure point.
Val di Sole is not bringing to a close
its focus on mountain-biking after successfully hosting the World
Championships last June. With
the organization of the Worlds
in 2008, Val di Sole made an
important return to the international sporting arena, confirming and re-launching itself
as a world championship valley. Thus proving that Val di
Sole is the perfect location
to host international events, and at
the same time it is also an important tourist
destination for active holidays, particularly for mountainbiking. The exciting disciplines of cross country, downhill,
four cross and trial were the launching pad for our exclusive
intermodal network that includes a combination of traincabin-lift service, which enables us to offer a rich selection
of mountain-bike excursions. By next summer the long and
enjoyable cycle path, which meanders through the entire
valley, will finally be completed. In particular, the section
between Mestriago and Piano di Commezzadura, which is located between the river “Fiume Noce” and the railway, will
be constructed.
Train + Bike
Four Cross- World Championships June 2008
The Val di Sole cycling track mainly runs along the course
of the river “Fiume Noce”, following the track of former
country roads, by-roads and river bank lanes.
It begins in Mostizzolo at an elevation of 595 meters
above sea-level and ends in Val di Peio, at Cogolo at an
altitude of 1160 meters. In other words, it’s a bicycle path
for big and small alike. Cyclists of every persuasion can
enjoy the beauty of the ever-changing scenery. The bicycle
path allows you to view numerous beautiful cultural and
geographic features of Val di Sole while you set the pace
yourself.
Mountain biking routes
Val di Sole offers various possibilities of mountain biking routes, ranging from the easy ones, to the moderately
difficult, to end with those recommended for experienced
mountain-bikers only. A MOUNTAIN BIKE booklet including
20 detailed routes, in english, is available at all Information
Offices throughout the valley. Some of these courses were laid
out in the last years for the prestigious Transalp, the most
important international mountain bike race on the calendar
with thousands of participants. The
town of Dimaro in the heart of Val di
Sole, has particular importance as it
is the meeting point of four different
routes from Germany to Garda Lake.

“Adamello Bike Arena” means 500 km of mountain
bike tracks between Alta Valle Camonica and Alta
Val di Sole, surrounded by the Stelvio National Park,
the Adamello Brenta Natural Park and the Adamello

and muletracks built during WWI form 18 circular
routes of different levels, ranging from 700 to 2600
mt of height. A detailed map with descriptions,
vertical drops, distances in kilometres and colours
indicating the level (blue, red or black) will help the
bikers choose the right track (at the Information

reducing our impact on the environment. Using the train
more often reduces the number of vehicles on the roads,
which is great for our surroundings. The Trento – Malé Marilleva train is celebrating its 100th anniversary, being
inaugurated as one of the first ever European electric train
lines in the year 1909, in an era of great social change that
helped push Trentino into the modern age.

iron and bicarbonates), and the Nuova Fonte
(with a medium level of carbon dioxide). The
new Thermal Center has a wide assortment
of therapeutic thermal-water treatments
effective in dealing with the following disorders and conditions: respiratory diseases,
impairments of the locomotive system (legs

Spa in Rabbi
Well known
from ancient
times for its therapeutic
effects, this thermal
spring became the favourite
of the Imperial Austrian Court.
The Rabbi water was called, “natural elixir”,
due to the force of the gas contained within.
The high concentration of carbon dioxide allows the water to support numerous natural
elements, all of which possess beneficial effects. During the water treatment the gassy
components help cure the digestive tract,
while its use in bathing therapies is very efficient in the treatment of rheumatic and circulation disorders.
The experimental studies carried out on the
waters properties have shown notable benefits
in the treatment of varicose veins.
Among the various treatments offered, there
is also one for the prevention and cure of
cellulite. The ferruginous component, present
in the form of ferrous ions, makes this water
ideal for the treatment of anemia and lymphatism. The presence of bicarbonate allows
for the useful treatments of cronic pharygitis, laryngitis, sinusitism and bronchitis. In
the “Centro Benessere” there is a modern regenerative bath, as well as an area dedicated
to the Kneipp therapy and mud, peat, and
herbal therapy.

The thermal springs in Peio and Rabbi in the Stelvio National Park combine the healing powers of mineral water with the magic of a pristine Alpine landscape.
A tasteful vacation
Solandrian cuisine centers on simple but by no means unimaginative dishes, many of which are based on secret recipes dating
back to grandmother’s era. They are characterized by their Alpine
origins, and make use of dairy products still carrying the aroma of
hay, the fragrance of fresh grass, and the smell of pristine mountain
air. Solandrian cuisine includes many game dishes, often garnished
with forest berries and health-giving herbs. You really ought to
try such dishes as Strangolapreti (“Priest Chokers”), gnocchi di
comede (wild mountain spinach dumplings), capellazzi or monchi (delicious pasta dishes), potato pancakes, and many different
kinds of soup. And when it comes to dessert, why not try some
torta di fregoloti (a kind of crumble-topping cake), carrot cake,
or that all-time favorite: strudel. Traditional Solandrian cuisine is
available in numerous restaurants and hotels in the valley.

Dining with casolet
“Listed Slow Food product”

The Casolet is a traditional cheese that is uniqe to Val di Sole,
where once it was widely produced. It is a typical mountain cheese
made from raw ingredients and whole milk. Once it was produced
only in Autumn, when the cows had been brought down from the
upper pastures and local fodder was scarce. It was regarded as a
high quality cheese for the home kitchen, and was generally eaten
in the Winter period. The name of the cheese has its origins in Latin. It comes from the word “caseolus” which means small cheese,
and in fact the traditional form of the casolet is a small 7-12 cm
per 10-22 cm, and this measurement is still used today. You can
buy casolèt from the two major cheese factories in the valley or
from small specialist shops.
