Recent trends have indicated that current SGLI beneficiary information is inconsistent with vRED distribution desires on the part of the deceased member. Part of the reason stems from a disconnect between vRED and SGLI which require separate actions by the member. This issue needs to be fixed by each member to ensure their benefits may be distributed in the desired manner. Movie Night for Dorm Residents: 1st Tuesday of the Month Afternoon Family Films: A member's vRED allows them to designate distribution of unpaid pay and allowances and the death gratuity. SGLI distribution is a separate action under the auspices of the Department of Veterans Affairs. As such, all SGLI actions require paper products and are currently handled through the MPF Customer Service Unit. All members who have updated their vRED need to double check their SGLI to ensure it is updated as well. Again, members are confusing these transactions as one. If anyone needs to update their SGLI, please stop by the MPS at Bldg 210, Rm 157 for update as soon as possible. 2nd Saturday of the Month Read More on Pages 13-14 Continued from Page 7 • • • • • • • questions about the Elite Fitness Program, contact the Eglin Fitness Center. Polar Bear Swim Book Club —————————————— DISCUSSIONS THIS MONTH Berlin to the Gulf of Mexico: POW 5518 Remembers by James Crook December 7 • 11 a.m. • Eglin Base Library The Eglin Base Library will kick off its new monthly book club on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Dec. 7. The book selection is “Berlin to the Gulf of Mexico” by local area World War II veteran, James Crooke. The memoir by this Army Air Forces aviator chronicles his trials of being shot down over wartime Germany and his time spent as a prisoner of war. Interspersed between the chapters of these hardships are Mr. Crooke’s easier reminisces of growing up in the small town charm of Pensacola and the American South in the 1930’s. This is a must-read for all local history and WWII buffs. In honor of Mr. Crooke and the day of remembrance, the Library will display a selection of current materials that were purchased and part of the Library collection at that time. Hamlet's BlackBerry by William Powers January 19 & 26 • 11:30 a.m. • Eglin Base Library There have been many positive aspects to our technological advances over the past 10-15 years. The ability to communicate across the world makes it feel as if you are communicating with them in the next room. Along with the excitement that these breakthroughs bring, there can also be some downsides. The downsides often include interpersonal relationships and time with family. The book, "Hamlet’s BlackBerry: A Practical Philosophy for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age", takes a look at how we can strike a balance between being connected to the world and then choosing times to unplug, and being very deliberate about the interruptions we allow. Please join us in discussing these topics and bring your ideas of how to negotiate this complex issue. Feel free to bring your lunch. To register or find out more about the book discussions, call the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 850-882-9060. To reserve a book, visit the Eglin Base Library. 14 Ready for a genuinely "chilling" experience?
