About Curaçao Offer your clients a destination unlike any other destination in the Caribbean! European Charm combined with Caribbean Flair! Curaçao is a truly unique island in the Southern Caribbean, located off the coast of Venezuela between its sister islands Aruba and Bonaire, below the Hurricane belt. The blend of Caribbean flavor and European charm makes this island a real gem among the other Caribbean islands. The main town of Willemstad with its European architecture and fascinating history is one of the most truly interesting and beautiful towns in the Caribbean. Designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Willemstad waterfront with its brightly painted buildings, is a pastel postcard of old Amsterdam. The town also houses the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere, lovingly cared for by a more than 350 year old local Jewish community. The beautiful reef along the south coast of the island, accessible by boat or by one of the forty small and unique beaches, allows for excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Above the water, the rugged charm of the natural environment provides the perfect scene for off-road adventures. The climate is warm and sunny year round, even the water temperature does not drop below 77ºF (25ºC). Whether you are looking for a fun ‘beach’-destination or a destination that radiates culture and class, Curaçao offers it all! Climate Temperature All year long the average midday temperature in Curacao is approximately 86° F (30° C). There is little variance in the seasons because of the island's proximity to the equator. December usually feels a bit cooler (low 80's F / 27° C), with the hottest month being September. This is mostly because the ever cooling trade winds tend to die down in hurricane season. Rainfall Curacao is a relatively dry island. Traditionally most rainfall was limited to the rainy season from November through February, but due to the changes in the global climate the rainy season is no longer restricted to those months. The good news is that when it rains on Curacao, this is mostly between 3.00 am and 6.00 am. Also during the day, rain showers usually do not last longer then 20 minutes. Hurricanes While the official hurricane season in the Caribbean is between June 1st and November 30th, it does not affect Curacao like the other Caribbean islands. Due to its location in the South of the Caribbean the island is safely located below the hurricane belt. 3 Perseusweg # 5 Curacao, Dutch Caribbean Tel.: +5999 737-5434 mice@explorecuracao.com WHAT MAKES CURAÇAO A DIFFERENT DESTINATION THAN THE REST OF THE CARIBBEAN? • • • • • Unique Historical City Center: The development of the city center of Willemstad started when the Dutch settled on the island in 1634 by building a fortress on the east bank of the harbor. ‘Fort Amsterdam’ as it was called is still the official residence of the governor and home to the government. On the peninsula around it, affectionately called ‘The Point’ (later ‘Punda’), the first homes and shops were established. The trade quay or ‘Handelskade’ is still the calling card of the island with its pastel colored buildings that resemble the famous canal houses in Amsterdam. ‘Willemstad’ surely deserves its listing on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the same list that boasts the Taj Mahal, pyramids in Egypt and the Great Wall of China, clearly setting it apart from anything you’ll encounter in the rest of the Caribbean! Over 50 different nationalities living peacefully side by side Most of the time travelers learn about themselves by learning about different cultures, but sometimes hosting destinations learn about themselves through the feedback of visiting travelers. The way in which everyone lives peacefully together on this small rock comes natural to the local inhabitants, so natural even that it often amazes them that visitors find this amazing. The different ethnic groups live not only next to each other, but with each other, and the level of tolerance is very high. The tolerance does not only apply to the way in which the different cultures interact, but also shows in the acceptance of homosexuality; making Curaçao one of the few gay-friendly destinations in the area. Approximately 40 different beaches: Curacao is home to over 40 beaches and so-called 'boka's that are scattered mostly along the South Coast of the island. You will notice, after having visited a few of these beaches, the diverse atmospheres, geological origin and the way in which they are used by the local population. Some of our treasured beaches are still used by fishermen, who will often arrive early in the day, their wooden dinghies full of fresh fish, that is cleaned and sold right there on the beach. If you want to feel spoiled, visit one of our white sandy beaches with all the facilities; comfortable beach beds, outdoor massages, excellent beach bars and exciting water sport activities. Apart from the hotel front beaches, that are usually not open to the general public, we have selected several beaches that are all unique in their own right! Healthy Colorful Reef, ideal for Snorkeling and Scuba Diving Over 80 dive sites, most of them accessible from the shore, are scattered along the coast line of Curaçao. The healthy reef suffers little impact from the weather, as this is stabile year round, with a much lower chance of hurricane damage than any of the other Caribbean islands. Being a coral island with only limited rainfall prevents an excess in organic material in the water that can cloud visibility or stimulate algae growth. Visibility is therefore usually no less than 60 feet (appr. 20 meters). Add to these ideal circumstances the presence of thousands of colorful, harmless tropical fish and marvel at the wonders of nature! Large variety of excellent restaurants; from great casual to exclusive fine-dining You would be hard pressed to find an island in the Caribbean with as many high quality dining options as there are on Curaçao. With its natural harbor and trade tradition almost any ingredient or food type is available, with as a short selection of the options; Swiss-Caribbean, Sea Food, Italian, Argentinean Steak, Pizza, French-Belgian, super deluxe to barefoot on the beach, waterfront dining to historical settings. Any taste, any setting and any price! In short – Curaçao is such a diverse destination it will appeal to any traveler: from the fun-in-the-sun incentive group, to the sophisticated group profile that is keen on experiencing all the aspects to a different culture! 4 Perseusweg # 5 Curacao, Dutch Caribbean Tel.: +5999 737-5434 mice@explorecuracao.com 2.
