Project overview:
With this project on the S10, Asfinag realised the
connecting route of the A7 motorway from Linz
towards the Czech Republic which has been planned
for many years. After this project will be completed
the A7 will turn into the 22 km long S10 highway at
its current end near Unterweiterdorf. The entire
section was divided into several contract sections
and will be built from 2010 to 2015 with a budget of
approx. 720 million euro. The contract for section
4.1 – the bypass near Freistadt – was awarded to
Porr Tunnelbau GmbH in January 2011. This project
is realised in cooperation with Porr Bau GmbH
(Upper Austria) and Porr Bau GmbH’s infrastructure
division.
This project comprises the construction of six bridge
structures, two passages, the construction of an
underpass and a gallery, the construction of two
tunnels using the bored tunnel construction method
as well as earthworks and road construction works
for a 4.5 km long construction section.
Civil engineering:
Due to the multitude of structures of this project, it
was divided into individual sections or groups.
The first group comprised 3 bridges with two
supporting structures each for both lanes. The first
structure, gallery bridge F41, is a bridge
construction consisting of three sections and
separate supporting structures; its total length
amounts to approx. 95 m with spans of up to 37 m.
Its cross-section includes a pre-stressed slab with a
rounded soffit with cantilever slabs. Both supporting
structures were built on a sub-structure in one pour
for each structure, for which approx. 1,400 m3 of
concrete were used. The next two bridges (F37 &
F38) were two, approx. 55 m long, separate
supporting structures consisting of three sections
and spans of up to 22 m. The cross section included
an untensioned slab with double cantilever slabs
using the frame bridge construction method.
The second group consisted of two passages (F30 &
F35) and two bridges (F31 & F32). The passages
were built at first with closed, single-line rectangular
cross-sections, one for an agricultural road and one
for a stream. Parallel wing walls were placed at the
portals to stabilise the slopes. This was followed by
the constrction of the next bridges (F32) which were
realised as two separate skewed frame bridges with
spans ranging from 22 to 32 m. Their cross sections
are plate supporting structures with double
cantilever arms. The supporting structure is
reinforced with untensioned double haunches. The
F31 bridge’s supporting structure consists of 5

sections with a length of 135 m and spans of up to
32 m. Its cross section is a prestressed slab with
double cantilever arms. The supporting structure
was divided in to two concreting sections due to its
length.
The two remaining structures had to be built with
separate construction teams at the same time as the
other structures due to their penalised intermediate
deadlines.
The F34 underpass with a total length of approx. 800
m was built as a tunnel with two lanes using the
open cut tunnelling construction method. Abutments
and three walls were built in advance with block
lengths of 25 m. Afterwards the tunnel’s top slab
was concreted with a tunnel slab carriage in weekly
shifts. The ‘Galerie Brandstätter’ (F40/42) is an open
frame of reinforced concrete with a
horseshoe-shaped cross section and a block length
of 25 m. Abutments and one base element were
concreted in advance, before tunnel slab carriages
added the supports and the vault in two 12.5 m long
blocks. This was followed by the construction of a
cut-off on the vault for noise reduction along the two
lanes. The vault is 60 cm thick and built as a
waterproof concrete tank with a reinforced
construction joint. The gallery is interrupted by the
F41 bridge. The gallery’s vault across the bridge is a
steel construction with panel cladding to avoid any
interruptions of the noise barrier.
The project’s five service buildings, line collectors as
well as watercourse protection facilities at the
tunnels’ portals were an additional and separate
construction group.
