Business Beat - Madera Chamber of Commerce
The Community Edition Business Beat A quarterly publication of the Madera Chamber of Commerce June 2012 Chamber’s Business Extravganza and Trade Show The 2012 Madera Business Extravaganza and Trade Show was another great success. The event held on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at the Madera District Fairgrounds and was attended by over 1000 people. This year over 65 local businesses and agencies showcased their products and services. The evening concluded with over 125 prizes given away by sponsors, exhibitors, and local businesses. This year judges awarded the show’s Best Booth Award to the office of Dr. Jason Keledjian, D.D.S. The outdoor patio hosted the Food Court and Beverage Bar. Black Bear Diner, Bridge Store Catering, and Fastway Chicken served up their tasteful and delicious menu items. Performing live on stage was The Yard Dogs, always a crowd favorite and brought back each year by popular demand to perform. There are many components to putting on an event such as this. It is with great appreciation that we acknowledge and thank our sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, and other supporters for their involvement in making this event such an EXTRA special success! We would like to extend an invitation to our members to get involved wit h this committee and are very excited about hearing you input and working with you. If interested, please contact Debi Bray at 673-3563. Chairman’s Message – Brian Massetti, Massetti Brothers Appliance As June comes to an end, so does my term as Chairman of the Board. I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve as Chair and want to thank Debi, the Board and the Membership for trusting me with this position. I know the Chamber will continue to move forward in a positive direction under the leadership of Bret Mercer. As usual, Debi, Jennifer and Toni are doing a great job keeping the office running smoothly and taking care of the many events that our chamber is involved in. The last few months have been very busy in the office with the Business Extravaganza and other events but things don’t stop there. In August we will hold our marquee dinner event and honor several people who have given of themselves to ensure that we are living in a town that is the best that it can be. Our Senior Farmer Dinner, normally held in July, is being moved to early March. As unfortunate as it is, even with the great pillars and hardworking people in our community, there is a criminal element that cannot be ignored. The thugs of today are multiplying too fast and the criminal justice system is in many ways flawed. I, as probably some of you reading this, have experienced this firsthand. Although the Madera Police Department is doing the best they can, they cannot be everywhere at once. One way the Chamber is working with the Police department to benefit our members is through the Security Assessment Program. The Chamber’s website has the information you need to get started with this program, you can also contact the office or drop by. Working together, we can support the good work that has been done by our dedicated citizens and continue to improve our Madera way of life and ensure that our children are able to enjoy living in a great community like so many of us have. 2011-12 OFFICERS Brian Massetti, Chairman Massetti Brothers Appliance Bret Mercer, 2nd Vice Chair Quality Machinery Center 2011-12 BOARD MEMBERS Sam Basila Basila Construction, Inc. Message from the President/CEO The Madera Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the community edition of our Business Beat. This new edition is designed to inform the residential community of Madera more about our programs, events, and most of all, who our Chamber members are. We are proud to extend the distribution of the Business Beat to local citizens beyond our membership and hope that over time we will continue to grow our readership. In looking at our program of work and events there are some changes being made. From May – August we are very event driven. I would like to inform our members that one of the changes is to hold our annual Senior Farmer Dinner in early March. Normally held in July, the move is being made to spread out our events and allow for more time to be given to each of our events. Be watching for more information. Our next event will be our Lifetime Achievement Awards and Installation Dinner scheduled for August 22. As our fiscal year comes to a close, I would like to give a standing ovation to our Chairman of the Board, Brian Massetti. Brian has dedicated himself for the last two years in providing leadership to our organization and the Board of Directors. He truly believes in our community and cares about the quality of life for all, not surprising coming from a 3 rd generation (family owned) businessman. Brian is a true proponent for locally owned businesses and all Chamber members. His actions are always supported by his high ethical standards as well as his concern for the well being of Madera’s business community and local citizens. The very reason that there is now a Business Beat Community Edition is all a credit to him. Thank you Brian for a great two years! A special thank you his family and employees of Massetti Brothers Inc., Appliance for their support in his role as our Board Chairman. I am pleased to announce that Bret Mercer of Quality Machinery will be our 2012-12 Chairman of the Board. More to come in our next issue about our new Chairman! Until next time…. Do you feel safe in your home or apartment? Do you avoid going on vacation in fear of someone breaking in? Whether you own your home or rent an apartment keeping family and valuables safe is everyone’s concern. Recent statistics of burglaries state that two thirds were accomplished by accessing entry through an opened window or door. Here is a preventative check list to keep your family and valuables safe. Secure all sliding doors. Put a steel rod in the door channel. Install 2 or 3 screws in the overhead track to reduce the chance of the door being lifted out of the track. Make sure that the locks on your doors and windows are strong and secure. Lock your doors and windows at night and every time you leave the house –even if it’s just for a few minutes. Have a wide-angle door viewer (peephole) installed in your front door so you can see who is at the door. Look into installing a burglar alarm system. Keep bushes and trees near your house well trimmed. Thick, tall shrubbery provides cover for a burglar and lets them work undetected. Use floodlights to brighten and prevent dark areas around your house, garage and yard. A well lit house will discourage burglars. Gate latches, garage doors, and shed doors should be locked at all times. Grills, lawn mowers, and other outdoor valuables should be stored in a locked garage or shed. Bicycles should be stored in a locked garage or shed. Display “Beware” signs. If you have a dog or an alarm system, put up signs that say you do. They deter thieves. Never leave a house key in an obvious place such as mailbox or under a doormat. Be careful with your keys. Put your house and car keys on separate key rings, and don’t put identification tags on keys. Use an engraving pen to write your current driver’s license number on your property. Burglars don’t want marked merchandise. Make a home inventory list, complete with photos or videos. Store this list away from your home. Have a security plan for when you are on vacation. Ask at trusted neighbor to pick up mail, etc. and to watch your home. Have at least two light timers set to turn the lights on and off in logical sequence. Don’t cancel the gardener. Be wary of wrong numbers and teach children what to say to strangers on the phone. Contact your local authorities if your home is robbed. Have your list ready of items taken and any damage done. Finally, organize a Neighborhood Watch program. Neighbors working together make one of the best crime-fighting teams around. The City of Madera has an outstanding program to help develop a network in your area. For more information to start a program in your neighborhood call Neighborhood Outreach Specialists; Sue Saunders at (559) 661-2852 or Christina Herrera at (559) 661-2853. Reduce exposure to the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest, and keep physical activities to a minimum during that time. When working outside, drink plenty of water or juice even if you are not thirsty, and take rest breaks in the shade. 2. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to cover the face and neck, and wear loose-fitting clothing to keep cool and to protect your skin from the sun and mosquitoes. 3. Wear sunglasses that provide 100 percent UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts, which left untreated, can lead to blindness. 4. Liberally apply sunscreen (at least SPF 15) 15 minutes before venturing outdoors and re-apply at least every two hours – sunscreen prevents skin cancer, the No. 1 cancer affecting Californians and prevents premature aging. 5. Never, EVER leave infants, children, frail elderly or pets unattended in a parked car – it can take as little as 10 minutes for the temperature inside a car to rise to levels that can kill. 6. To prevent overheating, use cool compresses, misting, showers and baths – if you or someone experiences a rapid, strong pulse, feels delirious, becomes unconscious or has a body temperature above 102, call 911 immediately. 7. Prevent children from drowning by combining adult supervision at all times and have a safety barrier that surrounds a pool or spa. Drowning is the leading cause of injury deaths for children under five. 8. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes. Some mosquitoes carry West Nile Virus (WNV) which often mimics influenza, with fevers, body aches and eye pain. WNV can cause serious health complications, and in rare cases, death. 9. Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaradin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535 according to label instructions. Mosquitoes usually bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear repellent during those times. 10. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old car tires, rain gutters and pet bowls – mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in standing water.
