Meggitt Avionics Electronic engine display system (EEDS)
Meggitt Avionics Flight deck avionics › Displays Electronic engine display system (EEDS) Key features • High resolution AMLCD • Wide or narrow viewing angle – fully anti-aliased • NVIS compatible • Two displays replace twelve or more instruments • Modular construction, lower parts counts and fewer • LRUs • Short 3ATI display provides choice of panel install location • EMD mounting by bolt installation or standard 3ATI panel clamp Meggitt Avionics’ electronic engine display system (EEDS) is a developed, military standard, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) product, comprising two high technology units from our newest product development programmes – the engine monitoring display (EMD) and data acquisition unit (DAU). The system has been specifically designed to replace aged inservice engine stacks with a small, modern, flexible and cost-effective solutions. Ideal for military and civil, fixed and rotary wing applications, EEDS features high quality engine monitoring displays, with reversionary capability, preferred by pilots for easy-to-read highly intuitive design. The EEDS records engine exceedence data from previous flights, which can be displayed by the EMDs or downloaded onto a PC. This enables organisational maintenance engineers to make informed condition based maintenance decisions, leading to leaner and more cost effective support. Meggitt Avionics Our capabilities: Flight deck avionics | Data acquisition systems | Electro-mechanical aircraft instruments | Stored energy © Meggitt Avionics | September 2011 • DAU options for foot or tray mounting • Compact and lightweight system • Low power consumption • All solid state design requiring only 28 VDC • Passively cooled, low power, low temperature design • Software configurable • Requiring only 5.5” (139.7 mm) behind the panel, the 3ATI instrument can be installed in the most restrictive cockpit • The glass used in the EMD is high resolution (RGB Stripe), giving superior contrast and luminance • The unit incorporates a frontloaded bezel assembly, enabling inter-changeability for multiple applications Flight deck avionics › Displays Electronic engine display system (EEDS) Meggitt Avionics recommends installing two EMDs per cockpit, one above the other, as shown. Installing the EMDs in this vertical configuration allows for the most logical presentation of parameters, with left and right systems being instinctively apparent, providing flight crews with enhanced readability without the need for complex training. Before After • Exceptional sunlight readability • High reliability for fewer unscheduled removals • Extensive IBIT eases maintenance and reduces NFFs • Reduced repair time compared to electromechanical instruments • Exceedence monitoring enables cost effective, condition based maintenance • Dual redundancy with immunity to single point failures Data acquisition unit • In a typical twin-engine aircraft, between eight and 12 indicators are used per cockpit to display engine data. For a fleet of 30 twincockpit trainers, up to 720 engine instruments are installed, plus spares. The same fleet of 30 trainers fitted with EEDS, consisting of two EMDs per cockpit and one full redundancy DAU, gives a comparative LRU count of only 150 versus 720 The EMD presents engine, fuel and other aircraft data received via the DAU. The display format can be tailored to suit specific requirements such as dials, linear scales, text or other symbols – mimicking the layout of the instruments being replaced. With dynamic use of color and flexible symbols, the EMD delivers a vastly improved instinctive pilot interface. Analog sensor interface complexities are addressed by the DAU’s modular design, which includes I/O boards that can be configured for each application. • Meggitt Avionics' lightest EMD weighs a mere 2.5 lb (1 kg) and is some 30 per cent below its rivals. • It is night vision goggle (NVG) compatible EED can be fully integrated without changing the aircraft’s existing engine and fuel sensors. The DAU boasts a dual redundant design to ensure continuous availability of engine data should any single point fail. Even with such extensive functionality and redundancy, the DAU is an impressively small unit that can be comfortably accommodated in most avionics bays.
