quality Adult Learning, Music and Youth Services into one organisation that enables children, young people and
adults of all ages to realise their ambitions and reach their full potential.
Whether you want to get creative and learn a new skill, gain qualifications for employment, or improve your skills to
meet demands in work, Community Learning MK can help you.

to provide an excellent learning environment where we can support you to succeed and progress.

Learner successes
Congratulations to this year’s
Adult Learner Award winners!
We will be celebrating their
achievements at a fun family
event at the Rivers Centre in
July. Tutors and staff look
forward to sharing stories like
Carmen’s.
Carmen Mercas completed
ESOL and Business
Administration courses with us and is now a student on
a Health and Social Care degree programme. Carmen
says:
“After 7 years as a full-time mother I started an ESOL
course at CLMK. At the beginning of my education
journey I told myself I was too old for studying but this
great experience as a CLMK learner made me more
aware of my own value and encouraged my ambition.”
Responding to feedback
We value your feedback and use it to make
improvements where we can.
Thanks to your comments over the past year, we have:
• Fully enclosed rooms 1, 2, 3 and 4 at Rivers to lessen
noise
• Improved the student lounge area at Rivers to
include an independent study area

learners
Introduced a special offer for learners who enrol on
more than four personal development courses over
the year
Exhibitions
Are you signing up for a creative course? Would you like
to display your work?
In addition to our annual July exhibition, we are
planning further opportunities for learners to show
their work at Rivers and other venues.
For details of all exhibition opportunities and
accompanying demonstrations and mini-workshops,
please contact jane.sharp@milton-keynes.gov.uk

Neighbourhood
Employment
Programme
Milton Keynes Council and Milton Keynes College are
working together with Job Centre Plus and a range of
voluntary and community organisations to provide locally
based job clubs to help unemployed young people and
adults into work.
The job clubs are based in community centres, libraries
and Parish offices in the heart of priority estates so that as
many people as possible can get help.
We really value opportunities to talk to you directly
about your experience as one of our learners. As well as
visiting classes, we hold learner forums and focus
groups so that we can hear what you have to say.
Would you be able to take part in one of our Adult
Learner Forum meetings? Informal meetings are held
once or twice a year and refreshments are provided.
email: communitylearning.MK@miltonkeynes.gov.uk
Job clubs offer help with careers advice, job search, CV
writing, completing applications and basic computer
training. Advisors can help you find other training as well,
whether you are actively seeking work or considering
your options for the future.
An up-to-date list of job clubs, opening times and contact
details is on the Council website at:
www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/clmk
Interviews and
skills checks
We want all learners to get the best from their course and
if you are applying for a qualification course we will
arrange a telephone or face-to-face interview to make
sure you understand what previous experience and
commitment the course requires.
English, ESOL and Maths learners will also have a
skills check to make sure that you start your course at
the right level.
Interviews and skills checks will take place at the Rivers
Centre during August and the first week of September.
To book an English, ESOL or Maths Skills Check, call
01908 556703.

Interviews and
skills checks
We want all learners to get the best from their course
and if you are applying for a qualification course we will
arrange a telephone or face-to-face interview to make
sure you understand what previous experience and
commitment the course requires.
English, ESOL and Maths learners will have a skills
check to make sure that you start your course at the
right level.
Interviews and skills checks will take place at the Rivers
Centre during August and the first week of September.

are now ready to complete your enrolment.

Complete and sign the form overleaf and:
• post it with cheque payable to Milton Keynes Council to: Rivers
Centre, Trent Road, Bletchley MK3 7BB
• or bring it to us at Rivers Centre.
• Please see p1 for details of our opening hours
or

Please note that phone lines can be busy at peak times. Why not
book early and claim your early bird booking discount?
If you apply for a reduced fee or free place you will need to tell
us the reason and sign a declaration to confirm your eligibility.
Terms and conditions of booking
• The minimum age to join a course is 16. 16-18 year-olds in full
time education may need signed authorisation from their school
or college if they join a qualification course.
• Payment is needed at enrolment to secure your place.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
We may, regretfully, have to cancel courses if we do not receive enough
enrolments, or close them if there is a high level of non-attendance or
withdrawal. In these circumstances you will be informed as soon as
possible by text where possible through PageOne and a refund will be
made by crediting your credit/debit card or by cheque. It is not possible
for us to make refunds in cash.
Note: Fees paid by chip and pin can only be refunded if you present the
original payment card at the Rivers reception.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol on courses which do
not attract quite enough learners to be fully viable, CLMK reserves the
right to adjust the course length. For example a course may be delivered
more intensively and end a week early. Under these circumstances no
refunds or partial refunds will be possible.
• Payment in instalments can be arranged where course fees are
£200 or more. You may pay 50% on enrolment and the remainder
in two equal instalments by an agreed date.
• 24+ Advanced Learning Loans and Bursary funds may be
available to support the cost of studying Level 3 and 4 Certificate
and Diploma courses.
• Learners who do not meet the residency requirements for Skills
Funding Agency subsidy may enrol on courses at full cost. The
charge will be double the standard fee plus any awarding body
registration and certification fees.
• To comply with statutory requirements Community Learning MK
may need to collect additional information from you during and
after your course.
• Please inform Community Learning MK of any change to your
contact details or benefit status.
• Fees for certain courses are based on an average enrolment of 4 8 learners.
• Examination fees are included in the course fee except where
otherwise stated in the course description.
• Course fees do not include materials, equipment, book or crèche
costs, except where otherwise stated.
• It is inadvisable to buy materials for your course until you are
certain it is running.
• It may occasionally be necessary for reasons beyond the control
of Community Learning MK to change the content, timing, venue
or tutor of a programme.
• A place on a course may not be transferred to another person
without informing Community Learning MK and ensuring that
eligibility to join has been checked and all enrolment details
amended.
• We are unable to accept responsibility for any damage to or loss
of student property. Any valuable items should be covered by
your own insurance policy.
• Cars and cycles are parked at the owner’s risk.
• If your course involves physical activity you should be medically
fit or have your doctor’s approval.
• Smoking is not permitted at any of our venues.
• Community Learning MK expects all learners and staff to play an
active part in promoting mutual respect and challenging any
form of discrimination or abuse. Community Learning MK
reserves the right to exclude any learner who does not uphold
this policy.
• Community Learning MK strongly recommends that learners
only undertake one GCSE per academic year due to the amount
of work required.
Session cancellation due to extreme weather
Wherever possible we will offer replacement or extended sessions to
make up for sessions cancelled due to extreme weather, tutor illness or
other unforeseen reason. In the unusual event that this is not possible, we
will recompense learners by issuing a pro-rata credit or learning voucher
against a future course.
Cancellation or transfer by the learner
If you need to withdraw from a course and inform us in writing at least 10
working days before the course is due to start, you will be eligible for a
refund of all fees minus a £30 administration charge. If you withdraw from
a course at any other time, you will not be eligible for a refund. However,
in exceptional circumstances and at our discretion, we may be able to
offer some credit against a future course.
Requests to transfer courses may also incur a £30 administration charge
unless recommended by your tutor or a member of CLMK staff because a
course at a different level will better meet your learning needs.

Functional Skills in English and Maths
Functional Skills qualifications are important because they offer practical problem solving skills alongside subject knowledge.
They can help you to succeed at work, in your community and as a parent. They can also help prepare you for a GCSE.
GCSEs in English, Maths and Science
GCSEs are sometimes needed to gain entry to higher education or for a specific work role, for example teaching.
Please note that GCSEs carry a heavy work load and you will be advised to enrol on only one course each year.
If you are interested in joining any of our English, Maths or Science courses, please contact us on 01908 556703 to book a skills
check. We will talk to you about your options and advise you which course best meets your needs.

Continuing your language learning?
Do you know your place on the Languages Ladder?
If you already hold any Languages Ladder certificates, make sure your new tutor knows which skills you have passed at which
levels.
Which level is best for me?
First Steps/Absolute Beginners/All Day:
For learners who have not learned any of the language before
Next Steps
For learners who have completed a First Steps/one day Absolute Beginners course or equivalent in the recent past
Improvers
For learners who have completed 40-60 hours in the recent past
Intermediate
For learners who have completed 120 hours in the recent past
Advanced
For learners who have reached A Level standard and want to improve their listening and speaking skills
GCSE
For learners who have completed 120 hours in the recent past and want an externally assessed qualification
Measure your progress on the Languages Ladder
How do you climb the Languages Ladder?
1 What is the Languages Ladder?
The Languages Ladder is a scheme which rewards your language learning achievements and helps you chart your progress.
2 How does it work?
The Languages Ladder gives you the opportunity to focus on the language skills you need - - listening, speaking, reading and
writing – and helps you to identify more easily which class you should join. You can start at Grade 1 in any skill and work your
way up!
3 Do I have to do the assessment?
No, it is entirely optional, although most learners decide they would like to have their progress recognised. Feedback from
learners indicates that the step-by-step approach helps them build confidence and makes learning easier.
4 When and where do these assessments take place?
Most assessments take place in the classroom and are very informal. This kind of assessment is part of the course and it is
unlikely that you will notice it happening! You might, for example, be asked to do an exercise as a group or with a partner and
the teacher will take the opportunity to listen in to what is going on.
5 How do I find out more about the Languages Ladder?
Your tutor should be able to give you more information or you can talk to our languages advisor on 01908 556705

Cancellation and Refund Policy
We may, regretfully, have to cancel courses if we do
not receive enough enrolments, or close them if
there is a high level of non-attendance or
withdrawal. In these circumstances you will be
informed as soon as possible and a refund will be
made by crediting your credit/debit card or by
cheques. It is not possible for us to make refunds in
cash. Payments made by chip and pin can only be
refunded in person and with the card used.
However, to avoid disappointing learners who enrol
on courses which do not attract quite enough
learners to be fully viable, we reserve the right to
adjust the course length. For example a course may
be delivered more intensively and end a week early.
Under these circumstances no refunds or partial
refunds will be possible.
32
Session cancellation due to extreme weather
Wherever possible we will offer replacement or
extended sessions to make up for sessions cancelled
due to extreme weather, tutor illness or other
unforeseen reason. In the unusual event that this is
not possible, we will recompense learners by issuing
a pro-rata credit or learning voucher against a future
course.
Cancellation or transfer by the learner
If you need to withdraw from a course and inform us
in writing at least 10 working days before the course
is due to start, you will be eligible for a refund of all
fees minus a £30 administration charge. If you
withdraw from a course at any other time, you will
not be eligible for a refund. However, in exceptional
circumstances and at our discretion, we may be able
to offer some credit against a future course.
Requests to transfer courses may also incur a £30
administration charge unless recommended by your
tutor or a member of staff because a course at a
different level will better meet your learning needs.

course you are also entitled to apply for help with

of getting to your course by public transport and up
to £30 for the cost of books and course materials
and equipment. Please keep tickets and receipts and
ask us for a learning support form, which your tutor
will sign.

Frequently asked questions
Q Can I get help with enrolment?
A Yes. A member of staff can assist you with the enrolment process.
Q I have problems with my eyes, particularly when the writing is so small. Will you be able to help me?
A We can produce handouts and examination papers in bigger print, on coloured paper, on a memory stick or as
email attachments. If you are using a PC on your course we can adapt it for you.
Q I wear a hearing aid and sometimes it is very hard to hear things in noisy places. Do you have any
facilities to help with this problem?
A We can provide a portable hearing loop.
Q I can’t sit for two hours because I have a bad back. Do you provide any firm chairs for your classes?
A If sitting for a long time is uncomfortable due to a back condition or arthritis for example, it is possible for us to
provide a special adjustable chair.
Q My sister has learning difficulties and would need someone to assist her in class because of her ability
to understand information and instructions. Do you have any staff to help with this?
A If you have a learning difficulty and/or a physical disability we can arrange a 1:1 in class and/or out of class
support assistant.
Q I may require extra time to take the examination. Is this possible?
A We can make special arrangements in examinations and assessments for you (please note that evidence of
your disability will be required by the awarding bodies; please provide this as soon as possible).

The council’s popular Youth Service is now part of
Community Learning MK. We hope that this will help to
highlight the links between youth work and the delivery
of information, advice and guidance and the learning
opportunities which can enhance young people’s life
chances.
Youth workers will continue to develop projects and
programmes in partnership with voluntary organisations
in those areas of Milton Keynes where particular needs
arise, e.g. through population growth or lack of access to
other facilities and support.
We will actively encourage young people who need
additional support to get involved in bespoke

engaged in education, employment or training to help
them have full and active adult lives.
An important part of our work is to ensure that young
people are involved in the design, delivery and
governance of youth programmes. We support the Youth
Cabinet, a group of young people elected by their peers
to identify and speak up about issues which are
important to young people, such as transport, bullying
and young people’s mental health.
