GNOCC POKER RUN

On Sunday, May 30, the Greater New Orleans Corvette Club held its annual Poker Run and it was great! Pete Rachel, Malcolm Graff, John Pinero, and Alton
Rivero were among the organizers of this truly fun day.
We started out at Lafreniere Park and got our cards at the gazebo by the Carousel. The day was sunny and dry as we left the park to start out on this happy
adventure. We encountered some rain as we headed to the Causeway, but half-way through our ride over Lake Ponchartrain, the sun came back out and we
travelled to Bush. We went to a most entertaining and historical museum there called the
Iron Museum. Inside this quaint museum we saw such old items as iron beds, porcelain
kitchen tables, two old time wringer washing machines, vintage typewriters, an old singer
sewing machine, a cast iron base with a tabletop, old dolls, antique furniture, and many
tools and other antique memorabilia. It was a very nice experience, and held so many old
items that many of us remember from our grandparents’ era. Barbara Graff told us a
scary story about the time that her little arm got caught in the wringer in her
grandmother’s wringer washing machine, too! There was also an extensive whiskey
decanter collection and the iron beds were covered in antique colorful chenille
bedspreads. It was a delightful museum!
Outside the Museum was little log cabin with older furniture and artifacts on the inside.
It reminded many of us of Elvis’ tiny two room home in Tupelo, Mississippi. There was a
vintage kitchen table and corner china cabinet with old dishes and utensils, and a small
bedroom complete with iron bed and chenille spread, and antique dolls and toys in the room. Above the kitchen and bedroom were loft beds sitting on the
rafters. Outside the log cabin were old washing machines with washboards and even an authentic outhouse or “privy.” The sun was shining brightly and we
had a wonderful time going back into the pioneer times of history.
Following the tour of this lovely area, we headed to Abita Springs to view another quaint museum. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with us on
this leg of the adventure. The rain was pouring down and many of us got soaked as we went to draw another card. But, luck came back to us as we journeyed
to Madisonville. The sun came out again and we saw beautiful, huge mansions around the Madisonville Maritime Museum. This was another museum with
great historical interest, especially now that our beloved southern region is suffering another tragedy. “They” say that Hurricane Katrina was the worst natural
disaster of our time and now, the B P oil blunder is the worst man-made disaster of the time. Our coastline, wetlands, wildlife, delicious seafood, and tourist
industry are in just as much peril as our region was in after Hurricane Katrina wickedly devastated so much of our area and peace of mind. The Maritime
Museum had some nice things to see, and there was a replica of the Camellia Riverboat which housed a nice theatre to view a film on the history of
Madisonville and the way that many Northshore residents travelled to New Orleans and to West End to have a good time. It was nostalgic and informative,
too. There was also another short film in the front of the museum about the tragedy of the B P oil spill and its long-term devastating effects.
Following this museum tour, we went to a wonderful restaurant called Orlando’s. Larry Orlando was so gracious to open his dining place on a Sunday, just
for us. He visited with us as we dined and told us about the many delicious dining delights he cooked for us. The food portions were huge and delicious! It
was well worth the ride to Madisonville to dine at his great restaurant. I want to especially thank Alton and Kim Rivero for planning our dining experience at
Orlando’s. We will have to go back there for another fun adventure really soon.
After we had our wonderful meals, the awards were given out to the holders of the top hands in the Poker Run. Congratulations to all who had winning cards
and to everyone else who still had some good hands.
As I said earlier, the planning of the Poker Run was very well orchestrated and thought out. Being a high school teacher, who just came out of assisting in the
arduous planning of the Academic Awards Banquet and Graduation Ceremony for my school, I have the utmost respect for those who plan a detailed event
and have it come off perfectly! Congratulations go out to Pete Rachel, Malcolm Graff, John Pinero and Alton Rivero for all their help that made this trip so
entertaining and successful. You did a great job!!
We look forward to another fun adventure next year. What a glorious way to start a happy “Corvette Summer.” See you next year!

PRESIDENT VIEWS
I guess summer is really here now but the warm temperatures does not stop our Corvettes
from rolling. We have been to a few cruise nights and car shows this past month. Back to
the Beach gave us a little bit of everything, sunny skies, warm temperatures, and a cool
rainy evening. It was great to see so many of our members take part and support the
Lake Pontchartrain Foundation to save our lake. Once again we were honored with the
Club Participation Award. There are still lots of events coming up, so be sure to check
your e-mails and the website.

Our ExtraVETTEganza all Corvette Car Show will be here in a flash. Please register your
car and help promote the show by selling at least one Sponsor Award. You can go the
GNOCC website and print all forms needed. Also check out the valve cover car rules, I
am sure everyone will want to enter their very special & unique racer. Each year this part
of the show seems to grow with enthusiasm. Don’t forget, we have a wish list for our
Charity, Metro Center for Women and Children on our website. All donations may be
brought to the show.
Happy 4th of July to everyone. Remember our General Membership Meeting has been moved to Friday July 9th,
Rotolo’s to Saturday July 10th, and the Bass Pro Shop is Sunday July 11th. Man what a weekend !!! It just doesn’t get
any better than this!!!

• The original Greater New Orleans Corvette Club was formed in 1980, but the Greater
New Orleans Corvette Club that we all know and have grown to love was formed in 1988.
• The first President of the current Greater New Orleans Corvette Club was Ronnie
Martin and the vice president was Mike Poupart.
• “A Child's Wish” was the original charity that the club sponsored.
• ExtraVetteGanza was first started 1992 and was held at Ormound Plantation
• The GNOCC club logo was designed by Eddie Ledet.
• There were originally 12 founding members of the club.
• Brunnings Restaurant in West End was the location of the very first meeting.

It's significant to note that a

GNOCC AT BACK TO THE BEACH

Just as I was backing out of the driveway at 6:45 in the morning, my cell phone rang and as I answered it all I could
hear was barking from Malcolm, and he was not in his usual jovial mood. Seems like the perfect plan had gone astray
and things were not going to work out as promised. All of the GNOCC cars were supposed to line up separately and
then be escorted in by the Police to a spot around the cul de sac.
Now, Malcolm was being told that this would not happen and
the GNOCC cars would line up with the other cars and
hopefully some of us could park together. There were five lines
of cars and all our members were scattered all throughout them.
Some cars were even further back than the staging lines. I found
Malcolm in the line up, and as I suspected, he was not very
happy at being misled. We finally resigned to the fact that we
were not going in as a group and just decided that we would
make the best of the situation and just have fun.
Finally, the line I was in was escorted to the entrance. As I
handed in my registration I was directed to a special Corvette
parking area, and much to my surprise, there was Malcolm
directing all the members of GNOCC to park together along the
lake front. Someone had reserved that spot for us and somehow
the word did not filter back to Malcolm. We had approximately
30 cars there and that lineup along the lake was just beautiful. Everyone jumped out and started detailing cars. Before
you knew it we were all done, sitting in the shade under a shelter and assorted tents, admiring our cars and the crowd.
Soon the band cranked up and we had live music, great food, and our Corvette friends. Life just doesn’t get much
better than that.
One of the special privileges of owning a Corvette is to watch the people look at and admire the cars. All of us can
remember when we had that gleam in our eyes and a promise made to ourselves that one day we would be in that
Corvette line-up. Many questions were asked and, as usual, the members were eager to answer and show their cars.
Some time in the early evening a thunder shower rolled through and we huddled under the tents or shelter and kept
right on having a good time.
The good news is that many of our members won individual awards and GNOCC won the club participation award.
Before you knew it the day was over, but the memories of a good time with our Corvette friends linger.

WORLD WAR II ADVENTURE

On Saturday, June 10, Felix Famularo and Mary Berkowitz, the President of the Crescent City
Corvette Club, planned an awesome adventure that could not be described without using such
words as fun, educational, historical, thought-provoking, and patriotic. It truly made you feel
proud to be an American, and to have the utmost respect for our military personnel throughout
the history of our great country. It also made you feel a sense of pride for our men and women
who are giving their time, and unfortunately, their lives to fight in this dreadful Middle East
War.
The day started out with a group of us meeting at the Basin Street Station Visitor Information
Center. This was a really nice “museum” with maps of the city of New Orleans, a tribute to the
great Jazz and Blues singers, such as Jellyroll Morton, Fats Domino, Louis Armstrong, and
many others who shaped our musical history and culture. There was a large mural of Canal
Street with the original Basin Street Station located next to the Saenger Theatre, and a great
little gift shop, too. The gift shop held many books about New Orleans and even some about the
Voodoo culture, hauntings, and ghosts of the area, and surrounding plantations. One special
book that I bought was called, “New Orleans, a City of Desire.” It was a pictorial love story to
the architecture, and beautiful sights that the Crescent City abounds in.
Following our tour and shopping experience, we headed over to Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s
Restaurant and had some delicious fare, such as Juicy Lucy burgers, quesadillas, seafood and
many other tasty fares. The restaurant was decorated with surfboards and had a beautiful view
of Tchoupitoulas Street and the buildings and balconies. Many of the locals and tourists thought
that the view at Lucy’s was even more beautiful, with our fantastic, colorful Corvettes lining the street in front of Lucy’s and the surrounding
areas. Many people stood along the side of the streets to take pictures of our “babies.”
After a great dining experience at Lucy’s, we made a mini parade heading to the World War II Museum complex. The Museum is really well
organized, and holds several floors of memorabilia, authentic uniforms, rifles, guns, movies, and pictures of the events that led up to and were
taking place during World War II. The main entrance was breathtaking with a huge bomber, and propeller planes “hanging” from the high
ceiling. There were tanks, a Higgins boat, and other war equipment displayed in a great manner.
As you visited each floor of the museum, you could feel the heroism, pride, and bravery that our military men and ladies had throughout that
dreadful time in our country’s history. There were also many tributes to the countless civilians who took care of the war efforts here in the
U. S., ( and to Rosie the Riveter) who built so many planes, tanks, and supplies needed by our heroes fighting the war. I cannot say enough
about how well this museum displays the historical items, pictures, posters, and war equipment. I especially enjoyed one of the movies about
the building of the Higgins boats right here is our region. Harry Connick, Jr. narrated the short film, as only he could, with his sweet
“Naturally Nawlins” accent!
Following our tour of the fabulous museum, and our shopping experience at the gift shop, we crossed the street to enter the second phase of
the museum experience and visited another complex which housed the John Besh Stage Door Canteen Dinner Theatre and viewed a heartstopping 3-D IMAX movie, narrated by Tom Hanks, in the Solomon Victory Theatre. The movie was incredible, with the 3-D effects and
props that dropped and were suspended from the ceiling to further authenticate the pictures and movie presentations. There was snow, rain,
and rumbling seats to let us feel the tanks, planes, and bombs blasting in the film. It was a somber reflection, thoughtful, honest, and an often
a sentimental depiction of the war that took us “Beyond All Boundaries.” There were not many dry eyes when the film showed the atrocities
perpetrated by the evil Hilter, Hirohito, and Mussolini. The saying, “If you do not learn from history, you are destined to repeat it”, could not
be more meaningful at this crucial time in our nation’s history.
After the movie, we headed to the Stage Door Canteen to partake in delicious, gourmet meals under the culinary direction of John Besh. For
our first course, we had a choice of crabmeat pot pie, (which was beyond delicious!), chilled cucumber soup with lobster, or heirloom tomato
salad with mozzarella. The second course had selections of roast pork, pan seared grouper, slow cooked beef ribs, or trout amandine, not
almondine, which was topped with lump crabmeat and brown butter. It was fantastic!! For dessert, we could choose from chocolate cake
with coffee buttercream inserts, strawberry shortcake, or honey lavender Bavarian citrus soup. Most of us got the chocolate cake or
strawberry shortcake. Everything was delicious and presented in an elegant manner.
After our dining experience, we were treated to a 20 piece band and 3 singers who played and sang such traditional Big Band hits as
Sentimental Journey, Take the “A” Train, Begin the Beguine, It’s Been a Long, Long, Time, Woodchopper’s Ball, Stardust, Tuxedo Junction,
A String of Pearls, Sing, Sing, Sing (with a phenomenal drum solo), and ended with As Time Goes By, and I’ll Be Seeing You. It was called
a Tribute to the Big Bands of the WW II Era, and the musicians were skilled and talented and played the works of Woody Herman, Artie
Shaw, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Gene Krupa to perfection.
The entire day was delightful, fun, educational, and well organized. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Felix and Mary all their planning!

Greek Pasta Salad
8 oz Angel Hair pasta (cooked)
1 bunch Green Onions (chopped)
1 small jar Green stuffed olives (drained)
1 large can Black Olives (pitted & drained)
1 small jar Pimentos (chopped)
½ C Olive Oil
3 Tbs Mayo
2 Tbs Lemon Juice
2 Tbs Greek Seasoning
Mix Oil, Mayo, Lemon Juice and Greek Seasoning. Toss pasta, green onion, pimentos and
olives with dressing and chill.

EDITOR'S MUSINGS
You guys made a really interesting newsletter this month! It was great to see so many people submit things this
month. You really outdid yourselves.
Kathy Culbertson did a superb job on the Poker Run and World War II articles. Kathy, you are always such a pleasure
to work with.
Jim Richoux wrote the wonderful article on the Back to the Beach show that kept me in suspense. The article started
out with the show being a disaster and it sounded like it was a horrible, but than he cleared up the details and
everything worked out! Thanks for such a great article!
A special thanks goes to Roger Williams for supplying us with a few historical facts about the club. I apologize for
taking so long to put this in the newsletter.
Susan Himes provided us with a delicious recipe for a Greek Pasta Salad that looks so easy that even I might be
capable of making it!
As always, keep the articles, recipes and tidbits coming! I look forward to receiving some wonderful submissions for
future newsletters.
