President’s Report
If the 2013-14 Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan season was the season of changes, the 2014-15 season was the season
of challenges.
Early in the season, smoke from northern forest fires impacted cast, crew and patrons. The closure of the University
Bridge made access to the site more difficult. When Festival patrons arrived, they found stiff competition for parking
from patrons of Prairie Lily River Cruises and the newly-opened Kinsmen Park.
The 2014-15 season also saw the departure of long-term staff member Trevor Broughton, who made a significant
contribution to the Festival over his many years of service. We all wish him well in his new position at Tourism
Saskatoon.
Despite these challenges, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan enjoyed another successful, thought-provoking and well
received season. The successes of the 2014-15 season are due to the tireless efforts of a large number of dedicated
individuals, businesses and organizations.
Alan Long, a highly talented and well known member of Saskatoon’s theatre community, has joined Will Brooks and Ed
Mendez in the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan office. Alan’s skills and experience have already proven to be an
extremely valuable addition to a team that continues to grow in capability and enthusiasm.
Festival staff, cast and crew, board members and volunteers all worked tirelessly to create an experience patrons would
enjoy and appreciate. From long term major sponsors like PotashCorp and SaskTel, new sponsors such as Cameco and
Dakota Dunes Casino and organizations like City Hospital/Saskatoon Health Region who offered their nearby parking lot
to every individual who contributed through the Treasure Trove draw or the Patron Donor Campaign, all share in the
credit for the Festival’s success.
This season saw the Festival continue to expand the experience of Shakespeare. Casting a First Nations actor in the role
of Othello brought a new perspective to one of Shakespeare’s best known roles. The fast-paced, uproarious staging of
Much Ado About Nothing by guest director Pamela Haig Bartley was lauded by critics and audiences alike.
In my time on the board, I have been continually impressed by the dedication, capability, and capacity for growth of
those who combine their skills, talents and dedication every year to make the Festival a reality. Thank you to my board
colleagues and the staff, cast, crew, volunteers, sponsors, supporters and patrons for the chance to be involved with
such a superlative group of people.
As my term on the board expires, I look forward to seeing Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan continue to grow and
prosper. To quote Derek Jacoby from the film Dead Again, “I, for one, am very interested to see what's going to happen
next.”

Artistic Producer’s Report
2015 season: Othello – Much Ado About Nothing
As the first season that I had the pleasure of designing from the ground up I am very pleased with the rewards that we
received. We set out to create a season that was highlighted by two very different productions – one which created joy
and laughter and one that brought our community together for strong, constructive conversation about how we relate
to groups of our community that we label as “other.” This was strongly achieved and this season was something that we
are all very proud of.
THE FESTIVAL
Othello
We were fortunate to have the participation of GTNT (formerly SNTC) as a partner on this project which in many ways
laid the foundation for an important journey. Without the support, encouragement, and guidance of Curtis Peeteetuce
and his staff we would not have been able to take even the first steps. As it was we gave our audiences an adaptation of
Shakespeare involving Indigenous culture, corporate culture, modern technology and the Cree language. This was no
small feat and something to be proud of. What I am most proud of though, is the conversation. From day one, this was
our goal; to engage our audiences in a meaningful conversation. I don’t think I have ever been involved in a show that
did this in such a genuine way all summer long. I had my first audience member rush over to me to have an honest
conversation about the show and race in our community two minutes into the intermission of preview. I have yet to
have my last. I thank all of the voices that contributed to this conversation and I thank all of the Indigenous peoples who
supported us and gave their voices to our stage. My hat also goes off to Josh Beaudry and Michael Lawrenchuk who
took the lead with such skill and flair.
Much Ado About Nothing
For the second year in a row we were able to invite a guest director into the festival to offer our audiences something
different. Pam Haig-Bartley did not disappoint. With her incredibly intelligent and lively direction this show soared from
curtain to curtain. Robbie Towns and Jenna-Lee Hyde brought in two stellar performances and nearly brought the tent
down with the laughter of their crowds. We simply could not have asked for more from the team that brought us Much
Ado!
The Festival site came together very well under Production Manager Jen Rathie Wright. As always, the weather is
unpredictable but it cooperated in many ways. We put a lot of challenges Jen’s way this year with requests for
increased safety, a new in-the-round setup, site improvements and much more. Jen took the job on with verve and
really moved things forward. My thanks go to the entire production team including our designers Carla Orosz and
Beverley Kobelsky.
The PotashCorp Community Stage was a wonderful success this season led by Matt Mirlin. Matt is a long time staff
member of the Festival and was extremely intelligent and diligent in his approach to the community stage. There were
many strong performances.
We also had the fortune to engage in a long list of mentorship projects this year through GTNT, the University of
Saskatchewan and through our own programs. This was an incredibly beneficial year for this kind of support.
BUSINESS
Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan is in a very strong place and poised for a very healthy future. While ticket sales were
not what we had hoped due to many factors we were able to finish the year with a zero balance in our General Fund and
increases in both our Capital Fund and Reserve Fund. The ability for the company to be in a position to look forward is
thanks to the great work of staff and supporters.
We reached record numbers in our sponsorship as well as strong showings in our grants/contributions and fundraising.
We had the strong support of our long time sponsors as well as good growth in new sponsors. I think we have one of
the strongest sponsorship teams I have seen and my thanks go to everyone involved.
To add to the strength of our organization we undertook a strategic plan review with our board, staff, and some
stakeholders. Led by Fast Consulting and funded through The Saskatoon Community Foundation this was an extremely
useful step in the process towards a strong future. The document places focus of five strategic areas and give us a good
framework for moving forward.
It was with sadness that we bid farewell to Trevor Broughton our long serving Marketing and Publicity Director. Trevor
has put in great work over the years keeping the company strong and we thank him for all of his work. At the very end
of the fiscal year we were fortunate enough to have Alan Long come on board as our third full time staff member and
we are already enjoying the benefits of such a strong new team member. My immense thanks always go to Ed Mendez
our Operations Manager who is often working quietly in the background but who has already had an immense positive
effect on the organization since coming on board last year.
We were also lucky to have another year of incredible summer staff to make our site a wonderful place to be and we
look forward to having them back next year.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
I can never say it often enough and I am never sure if people really understand the level of truth to the statement – we
have an amazing board. We are fortunate and I am thankful for the skill, dedication, intelligence and foresight of our
board. Quite simply, they are the best board in town. At the AGM, it is always time to say goodbye to a couple of
people who are not able to serve going forward. My thanks go to Bill Quine and Melissa Kujawa. These are two people
that deserve huge thanks for the time they put into this organization. Bill does not tend to be one of the people
standing out front waiving a flag to gain attention for his good work but I assure you he deserves that attention. His
intelligence, skill, patience, and focus on a positive outcome is unmatched. I thank him both personally and on behalf of
the organization for his steady leadership. Those who know Melissa know that she is a cheerleader and a wonderful
team member to have in the room. Her presence will surely be missed.
If there is one thing I have learned with certainty in the short time I have had the pleasure of being here it is that we
have the support of our community in a big way. From private and corporate donors to government funders we receive
strong financial support. Our volunteers are dedicated and incredibly strong. Our staff is vibrant and most of all our
patrons are incredible. With all of this we are ready to take on yet another season with some incredible plans already
cooking.

Treasurer’s Report
2015 was a financially successful season with a number of achievements, while dealing with some challenges. There
were a number of factors that may have affected ticket sales, including the smoke in the atmosphere, the shutdown of
the University Bridge, and the parking limitations due to the expanded use of the new playground.
Overall Financial Position 2014-2015
· Assets of $79,223 in the General Fund due primarily to strong cash position, including a Term Deposit. (This is
lower than last year because we did not receive our 2016 grant from the Sask Arts Board before fiscal year end.)
· Capital Fund of $66,346 (including a $10,000 term deposit) and reserve fund of $24,945 (including a term
deposit of $15,000)
· Tangible Capital Assets of $106,790
· Total assets of $277,304, compared to $350,207 last year. The difference of $82,903 is due primarily to the Sask
Arts Board grant of $85,000 not received prior to yearend.
· Accounts Payable and Government Remittances Payable are slightly less than last year.
Revenue 2014-2015
· Total revenue of $609,958, a decrease of 3.9% from last year
· Total Grants and Contributions of $305,568, an increase of 4.1% ($11,972)
· Production revenue of $206,274, a decrease of 15.9% ($38,981)
· Total Fundraising revenue of $47,516, an increase of 29% ($10,689)
· Concession revenue of $31,266, a decrease of 9.3% ($3,205). Expenses of $19,216 were also down by 24.7%
($6,288). This resulted in an overall contribution of $12,050, compared to $8,967 last year.
· As required in our by-laws, we put $1.25 per ticket in our Capital Fund.
· $1.00 per ticket was put in our Reserve Fund. (See additional note under “Reserve Fund”.)
Expenses 2014-2015
· Total expenses of $595,705, an increase of 2.5% (14,433)
· Production expenses of $391,751, a decrease of 1% ($3,860) due primarily to monitoring of costs and improving
efficiency, while changing to a theatre in the round format and improvements to the site
· Administration costs of $141,129, an increase of 17.2% due primarily to changes in the departmental allocation
of some salary. In addition, the Board undertook facilitated Strategic Planning sessions (with an offsetting grant
for this initiative).
Reserve Fund 2014-2015
· For the second year in a row, there was no money transferred from the Reserve Fund to the General Fund to
cover cash flow and/or shortfalls in the pre-production season
· $1.00 per ticket is put into this fund ($8,507), and for this fiscal year, $4,205 was transferred back to the General
Fund to cover the loss of $4,205 in that fund. The balance in the reserve fund is $29,245, compared to $24,943
last year
Capital Fund 2014-2015
· We had another active year in the Capital Fund with grant and donor revenues targeted at specific projects
including technology upgrades, tent purchases, a new gate, and site improvements. The combined revenue in
this fund was $37,083 and a combined expense of $29,144.
There is always strong competition for grants, sponsorships, and ticket revenues in the arts community. And the wish
list of expenses is always great.
The Board wants to thank our supporters, our patrons, our sponsors, our granting organizations bodies, our volunteers
for all that they do to contribute to the continued success of Shakespeare. And we also want to thank our small, but
dedicated staff who work so hard throughout the year to ensure we meet our targets.

Our volunteers are on the front lines of our festival. They welcome our patrons into our theatre, and
