It is a global movement, where every Friday, artists anonymously and randomly “drop” pieces of art on the street, in flower boxes, in shopping carts, on store shelves, for any person to find, and keep. Or share. There’s no pretense. It’s just for fun, just to make people smile, and perhaps encourage others to join the movement themselves. Keep your eyes opened. You never know where you’ll find some art for your very own! More information may be found at Facebook.com/ FreeArtFridayClarkston Coming to Clarkston/Independence Township this August! That children who play sports are more able to deal with disappointment, are more comfortable with their bodies and are less likely to engage in destructive activities, like drug use? That one of the benefits of playing sports is the development of motor skills, as well as connecting between the mind and the body? That the average soccer player runs approximately 7 miles per game? That playing organized sports can help improve academic standings? That playing soccer improves flexibility, cardiovascular capability and body composition? Oakland County is taking a proactive approach to enabling its citizens to be more aware of emergency situations that may impact individuals and businesses in Oakland County, by implementing the Oakland County Emergency Notification System (OakAlert). OakAlert is an emergency notification system enabling and empowering interested parties to be aware of extreme incidents in Oakland County. To sign up for the notification system, go to: https://mioakl.my.gov-i.com/signup Independence Township Department of Public Works 6050 Flemings Lake Rd. Native Shrubs for Backyard Biodiversity Native Shrubs as Part of Our Landscape Heritage A shrub is a woody plant that branches at the base and is typically less than 25 feet in height. Native shrubs, by definition, are plants that existed in the Great Lakes region prior to the arrival of European settlers. They contribute to the rich and productive relationships among plants, animals, insects and microorganisms in natural ecosystems such as woodlands, prairies, and wetlands. Ecological Benefits To Keep Our Kids and Our Seniors Safe, and Our Waterways Clean dispose of unused, unneeded or expired medications. Native shrubs contribute to the natural environment in important ways: • NATURAL VIGOR: When properly planted, native shrubs adapt well to the variable weather conditions of Southeast Michigan. • RESISTANCE TO PESTS AND DISEASES: Once established, native shrubs are often resistant to pests and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides. • HABITAT FOR BIRDS, INSECTS, AND OTHER BENEFICIAL WILDLIFE: Native plant communities provide food, shelter, and hiding places for birds, butterflies, insects, and other beneficial wildlife. • WATER QUALITY ENHANCEMENT THROUGH SOIL STABILIZATION: Some native shrubs colonize disturbed habitats, holding soil in place and protecting soil from excessive drying. Shrubs absorb nutrients which might otherwise run off into waterways and provide suitable conditions for other plants— including the next generation of trees. Citizens can drop off medications at the Independence Township Oakland County Sheriff’s Substation off of Citation Drive in Clarkston. Monday–Friday, 7:30am–4:30pm. • REDUCTION IN FERTILIZER USE: When soils are enriched with compost or other types of organic matter, additional fertilizer may not be needed. Rather than guessing, test your soil for nutrients. For Michigan State University soil testing, telephone Oakland County MSU Extension at 248-858-0895. 21 locations throughout Oakland County.
