Dear Friends:
Welcome to the Saugus River Watershed Council’s 10th Annual River Night
dinner and auction! Your presence at tonight’s event will help us continue our
efforts to protect and restore natural resources, educate young people about the
environment, increase public access, and provide natural history programs for the
general public.
Proceeds from this evening will enable us to continue our many river
protection and restoration projects. Your support will also help us educate hundreds
of elementary and middle school students about their role in protecting the natural
resources of the watershed.
We have put together a unique evening celebrating the Saugus River
watershed. The many businesses and individuals acknowledged in this program
book have provided generous sponsorships and donated outstanding items to help
make this auction a success. We sincerely appreciate their contributions and urge
you to support their businesses.
This evening would not have been possible without the tremendous efforts of
the Saugus River Watershed Council's Board Members, staff, and many volunteers
who helped organize this event and ensure its success.
Lastly, thanks to all of you for joining us tonight to help celebrate our past
successes and future efforts to restore the natural resources of the Saugus River
watershed. Your ongoing support really makes a difference!
With sincere thanks,
Joan

Executive Director

The mission of the Friends of Lake Quannapowitt, FOLQ, is to promote public awareness and provide
long-term protection and enhancement of Lake Quannapowitt and its surrounding public lands.
FOLQ was founded in 1991 by a group of like-minded citizens who recognized how important Lake
Quannapowitt was to Wakefield. They sought to mobilize the growing public sentiment that it needed to
be protected for future generations.
Notable achievements:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Expanded public access to Comverse Professional Park pathways
Created Gertrude Spaulding Park at the head of the lake
On-going water testing since 1992, measuring among other things, salt and fertilizer runoff
Renovated Colonel Connelly Park
Removal of approximately 20 trash-bags of litter per year by sponsoring semiannual lake
cleanup events
Sponsored the Wakefield Goose Control Committee
FOLQ is a member driven organization. Hailing from Wakefield and beyond, our members express their
support in a variety of ways. Some volunteer at FOLQ's events and ongoing activities-like water testing
and lake cleanups-while others choose to commit their financial support. Whichever way you choose,
Lake Quannapowitt needs allies. It needs you!

About the
Saugus River Watershed Council
The Saugus River Watershed Council is a non-profit organization
founded in 1991 to protect and restore the natural resources of
the Saugus River watershed. Each year, we work with hundreds
of volunteers to restore natural resources, provide quality
environmental education programs, and expand public access
opportunities throughout the watershed.
This year, hundreds of middle school students will participate in
the Saugus River Watershed Council’s free environmental education
programs operated in partnership with New England Discovery.
Through field exploration, classroom projects, and hands-on
science, students will learn about the relationship between climate
change and local environmental conditions, and their role in
protecting the natural resources of the watershed.
During 2012, we will continue to protect and restore the rivers,
lakes, wetlands and wildlife of the watershed. Our priorities
include improving water quality, restoring historic fisheries such
as rainbow smelt, educating youths, and expanding public access
to the natural resources of the watershed.
The Saugus River watershed stretches from
Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield to the Lynn
Harbor/ Saugus River estuary, encompassing
all or part of the following eleven communities
-- Saugus, Wakefield, Lynn, Revere, Lynnfield,
Malden, Melrose, Reading, Everett, Peabody
and Stoneham.
