Overall, the magazine ranks Union 15th among regional universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997 and has ranked among the top 20 regional universities in the South for five consecutive years. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” Princeton Review Princeton Review ranks Union among the top schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 623 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. Chronicle of Higher Education: Great Colleges to Work For After a survey of 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities, the magazine chose 30 four-year institutions for its honor roll of Great Colleges to Work For. Union not only made that short list, but was also among only three schools to be recognized in 11 separate rating categories. America’s 100 Best College Buys An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is among a select group of institutions that has made the list in each of the years it has been compiled. College Access and Opportunity Guide Union is listed among 284 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. 4 university information Colleges of Distinction Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Templeton Foundation Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.” History Union University traces its roots to three antebellum Tennessee schools-West Tennessee College and its predecessor, Jackson Male Academy, both located at Jackson, and of Union University, located at Murfreesboro. Union is currently the oldest school affiliated with Southern Baptist life. West Tennessee College originated in the mid-1840s when supporters of the Academy secured a charter for a college and received an endowment from the state to come from the sale of public lands. West Tennessee College continued until 1874, when at a time of depressed economic conditions, the trustees offered the College’s buildings, grounds, and endowment to Tennessee Baptists in the hopes of attracting a southwestern regional university planned by the state’s Baptist leaders. Southwestern Baptist University, the immediate predecessor of the present Union University, originated because of a desire by Tennessee Baptists for greater unification. In 1907, Dr. T. T. Eaton, a trustee at Southwestern from its beginning, bequeathed his 6,000 volume library to the college. He was a former professor at Union University at Murfreesboro, where his father, Dr. Joseph H. Eaton, had been president. Shortly thereafter the name of Southwestern Baptist University was changed to Union University to honor the Eatons and others from Union at Murfreesboro. Because of an aging and landlocked campus, Union University moved in 1975 from near downtown Jackson to a new campus north of the city along Highway 45 Bypass. During the administrations of President Robert Craig (1967-85) and President Hyran Barefoot (1987-1996), enrollment increased from less than 1,000 students to more than 2,000; the multi-purpose Penick Academic Complex was enlarged several times; many additional housing units were erected; and the Blasingame Academic Complex (1986) and the Hyran E. Barefoot Student Union Building (1994) were completed. When David S. Dockery was elected as the fifteenth president of Union University in December 1995, he introduced a compelling vision to build on a great tradition while taking Union to the next level of regional and national prominence in Christian higher education. The progress that has been made during this time has been remarkable: fall enrollment increased from 1,972 (in 1996) to 4,205 (in 2011). During that time, Union also received 17 of the largest gifts in its history. Union started an extension program in the Memphis suburb of Germantown in 1997. Enrollment on the Germantown campus is now nearly 900 students. Classes began at an extension campus in the Nashville suburb of Hendersonville in 2008, with a campus building schedule for completion in 2012. In the past decade, more than $120 million in improvements to the Jackson campus have been completed, including 19 residence halls, the Miller Tower, Jennings Hall, Hammons Hall, Fesmire indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, Smith Soccer Complex, White Hall, Providence Hall and the Carl Grant Events Center. In addition, plans are underway for a new library building at a cost of at least $18 million. Undergraduate majors have been added in political science, physics, theology, digital media studies, church history, ethics, sports management, sports medicine, engineering. There are new graduate programs in education (M.U.Ed., M.Ed., Ed.S., and Ed.D.), nursing (MSN with tracks in education, administration, nurse practitioner, and nurse anesthesia), intercultural studies (MAIS), social work (MSW), and pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Doctor of Ministry (D.Min) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) programs. Union has achieved national recognitions, including a Top Tier ranking from U.S.News & World Report each year since 1997. At the start of 2011-12, that publication named Union one of 46 national “Universities to Watch” and one of only 56 schools “where the faculty has an unusual commitment to undergraduate teaching.” Accreditation Union University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, education specialist, and doctoral degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia, 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Union University. Normal inquiries about the institution, such as admission requirements, financial aid, educational programs, etc., should be addressed directly to the institution and not to the Commission’s office. Union University Volleyball Media Guide | www.uuathletics.com | www.facebook.com/UUAthletics | www.twitter.com/UUAthletics UNION UNIVERSITY letter from the president “Dear Friends of Union University Athletics Thank you so much for your support of Union University athletics. A commitment to excellence is one of our four core values across the University best demonstrated in our numerous quality academic programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. For 16 straight years, Union has been listed as a Top Tier University in the South by U. S. News and World Report. One of the fastest growing private institutions in the entire South, Union University continues to make strides in all aspects of our work, and athletics is no exception. Following numerous successful years in the TranSouth Conference and in the NAIA, the Union Athletic Department this year will begin anew in the Gulf South Conference. The Gulf South is one of the strongest conferences in Division II of the NCAA. Your encouragement for our coaches and athletic department leaders during this time of transition will be greatly appreciated. We thanks your for your support for the distinctive mission of Union University.” Cordially, Union University Volleyball Media Guide | www.uuathletics.com | www.facebook.com/UUAthletics | www.twitter.com/UUAthletics 5 UNION UNIVERSITY Director of athletics Tommy Sadler began working at Union in 1985, but started his time as the Director of Athletics in 2009. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics. Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his eighth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president. Tommy Sadler Director of Athletics “Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson. 1050 Union University Drive Jackson, TN 38305 Phone: 731-661-5218 Email: tsadler@uu.edu 6 Union University Volleyball Media Guide | www.uuathletics.com | www.facebook.com/UUAthletics | www.twitter.com/UUAthletics UNION UNIVERSITY athletic staff directory Union Athletics • 1050 Union University Drive • Jackson, TN 38305 • (p) 731-661-5130 • (f) 731-661-5182 www.uuathletics.com • www.facebook.com/UUAthletics • www.twitter.com/UUAthletics Online Staff Directory: www.uuathletics.com/staff ADMINISTRATION David S. Mooberry has assembled the largest roster in program history with 13 players, five of which are returning. Seven newcomers, all of which are freshman, will be called on to contribute to the program early in their careers. “A lot of changes are coming this season with Union moving to NCAA, the Gulf South Conference, new head and assistant coaches, and more than half of our team being players new to the program,” Moobery said. “I am excited about the team’s energy and excitement. I am looking forward to seeing what hard work and passion can do, as well as reaching for some great goals off the court.” Union’s volleyball squad is a young squad with just two upperclassmen, one senior and one junior. However, several of the younger players have already proven their worth as three of the five returners started last season. Included in that list was the TranSouth Conference Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference player, Savannah Hughes. The lone senior is four-year player Lauren Sprouse. Sprouse has been a solid player on the back row as a defensive specialist and libero. She has one of the best serves on the team with 21 aces, led Union with 360 digs and was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete. Jamie Humphries is the only junior on the team. She is a conference scholar athlete who has contributed in each season during her career, mostly as a quality defensive player. Three sophomores dot the roster for Union including Lydia Wright, Abbey Wainwright and Hughes. All three played significant time last season as freshmen. Hughes led the team with 328 kills, while Wright led with 49 aces and was third with 326 digs. Wainwright played in just 91 sets due to injury but still managed 189 kills. The largest class on the roster by far is the freshman class. The seven newcomers to the Union program include Kristen Cook, Micaela Bailey, Morgan Morfe, Mallory Baker, Elise Suefert, Linsey Mirtsching and Erin Hennesy. The young but talented players will work to be major factors in Union’s success as it navigates through the early years of NCAA competition. The GSC is a charter Division II member and enters its 43rd year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to talk about athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so bitterly contested in a collegial manner. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Dating back to 1997, the league has found neutral sites paying sizeable guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games (now 10) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals. Add to that the newly branded of “GSC DigiNet” video platform and the broadbanding of most of its championships and you can see why the GSC is a Conference paving the way into the 21st century. The GSC takes pride in their 46 National Team Championships in 13 sports and more than 100 regional titles, especially because there is no sacrifice on the academic side, where GSC studentathletes regularly earn Academic All-America. Three GSC teams advanced to NCAA Title contests in 2011-12, led by Valdosta State which claimed the league’s first-ever Softball Crown. Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State were the charter GSC members. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the GSC to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the addition of Southeast Louisiana (SELA) and Nichols State increased the membership to eight. The league opened an office in Hammond, LA, changed its name to the Gulf South Conference and began championships in nine men’s sports. Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) joined in 1972 and two years later, NELA left for Division I with SELA and Nicholls State following in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the CEOs admitted Valdosta State, followed by West Georgia (1983). In 1991, Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members. An aggressive expansion under the guidance of new Commissioner Nate Salant resulted in 10 new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State moved to Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season, decreasing the membership to 17. The Conference decreased to 15 teams in 2006-07 when Central Arkansas reclassified to Division I and Lincoln Memorial moved to the South Atlantic Conference, then 14 after Montevallo departed to the Peach Belt Conference. The GSC dropped divisional play after the 2010-11 season when its six Arkansas members broke away, dropping the membership to eight. The Conference did not wait long to implement an aggressive expansion plan, sponsoring the Division II applications of Union University (TN) and Shorter University (GA), which were accepted into the NCAA reclassifying process in July of 2011, and will enter as GSC provisional members in the 2012-13 season. The GSC took another step in bolstering its membership this summer, backing the Division II application of Lee University (TN) which was accepted by the NCAA in July of 2012. The league also bolstered its football membership when it agreed to add Florida Tech as a football-only member beginning in 2013. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough brought the GSC office to Birmingham. Current Commissioner, Nate Salant began his tenure in October, 1992.
