Katherine Delmar Burke School Annual Report 2011
Katherine Delmar Burke School Annual Report 2011 Burke’s Message from the President of the Board of Trustees Burke’s mission is to educate, encourage and empower girls. Our school combines academic excellence with an appreciation for childhood so that students thrive as learners, develop a strong sense of self, contribute to community, and fulfill their potential, now and throughout life. The past year was one of progress and change at Burke’s. After a three-year tenure as Head of School, Kim Wargo left Burke’s in June to become the headmistress of the Hockaday School in Dallas. Since July 1, our school has been under the excellent stewardship of Interim Head of School Lila Lohr. With decades of school leadership experience, Lila’s wisdom and broad knowledge of independent schools have helped enable Burke’s to move forward on all fronts. Perhaps the most important work of the Board of Trustees over the past year has been the comprehensive national search for our next Head of School, which culminated on November 15 with the appointment of Michele Williams. Michele will be taking the helm on July 1, 2012 coming to us from the Stevenson School in Pebble Beach, California, where she has been Head of the upper school since 1998. The unanimous choice of the search committee and the full Board of Trustees, Michele stood out to all Burke’s constituents – trustees, faculty, staff, parents and students alike – for her keen intelligence, strong and inclusive leadership style, visionary thinking, warm and approachable personality, and clear alignment with Burke’s mission and values. I would like to especially thank Ravin Agrawal and Louisa Consagra for cochairing the search committee and to say how excited we are to have Michele Williams as the eighth Head of the Katherine Delmar Burke School. 1 We continue to make great progress toward our longterm financial and strategic goals while working to enhance the day-to-day operations of our school. Among the highlights of 2011, we achieved 99% parent participation, 100% trustee participation and 94% faculty and staff participation in the annual fund, raising a record $951,000 to support the operating budget. In addition, our Parents’ Association contributed $550,000 to student financial assistance and faculty and staff development – and $50,000 to the endowment – from the net proceeds of Family Festival 2010 and Dinner Auction 2011. These strong fundraising results help decrease pressure on escalating tuition and are a tangible reflection of the support of our school community. Our school is in excellent fiscal shape in no small measure due to the leadership of Peter Engel, who served as Treasurer of the Board from 2008 to 2011. Below is a brief summary of our school’s financial well-being. • We completed our fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 with a balanced budget and with total operating revenue of $12 million. Approximately 82% of our revenue came from tuition, with 12% from fundraising, 3% from our endowment draw and 3% from other income. • Total expenses for the year were $12 million with CAIS Update salaries and benefits representing 62% of our expenses in fiscal 2011. Student financial assistance was 9%, facilities operations, maintenance and depreciation totaled 10%, instructional costs were 7% and general and administrative expenses were 4%. Interest costs associated with the bonds issued for our campus renovation and building project (Second Century Project) decreased to 6% in fiscal 2011 as we paid down $5 million of these bonds and restructured the remaining debt in November 2010. The accreditation process is important in the life • Reflecting the prudent oversight of our investment The self-study involved administration, faculty, committee, Burke’s endowment rebounded to $12.2 million as of June 30, 2011. The endowment is critical not only to the long-term health of Burke’s but also as it provides an annual draw that helps fund current operations. Our endowment draw in fiscal 2011 was $360,000. and staff, along with the Board of Trustees and One of the highlights of the past year was the very successful introduction of Burke’s first all-inclusive lunch program for students, faculty and staff, a big step in our student and community wellness initiative. In addition, an important project of the Board of Trustees was its work on revising and updating Burke’s mission statement (see facing page) – kudos to trustee and alumna Dana Goldberg and our lower school librarian Susan Faust for leading that effort! January 29 through February 1, this visiting On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my most sincere thanks to all our parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, grandparents and other friends of Burke’s for their deep commitment and support of our school. will hopefully lead to a renewed six-year accredi- cycle of independent schools. Burke’s received a full six-year accreditation in 2006 from the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). The school just completed an extensive self-study as part of the regular 2012 accreditation process. The resulting 176-page self-study report examines all aspects of school life and concludes with an action plan for the future. Parents’ Association. Coordinated by Susan Faust, the accreditation process will culminate with a site-visit by a five-member committee, assigned to Burke’s by CAIS. On campus from committee is being led by Reveta Bowers, the Head of the Center for Early Education in Los Angeles and a highly respected educator who has participated in 60 school accreditations. The self-study report provides a rich and full picture of the school at this moment in time, and we look forward to the visiting team’s report, which tation by the CAIS Board of Standards. Lila Lohr Interim Head of School December 2011 Arun Sharma President, Board of Trustees 2010-2012 December 2011 3 Our aim is to develop a deep love of learning. This statement from our new admissions viewbook reflects our commitment to being a community of learners. Students, faculty, staff and parents contribute to and are partners in the Burke’s educational process. To enhance student learning, we match our curriculum to the ways that we know girls learn best – and to what brain research tells us. One example is our new math program, Investigations, which builds our girls’ problem-solving and critical thinking skills and provides them opportunities to collaborate, manipulate and “team.” To facilitate parent learning, we offer a robust Speakers Series and our annual Great Girls Deserve Great Schools Symposium. These programs bring authors, educators and thought leaders to campus, such as our 2010 Symposium speaker Dr. JoAnn Deak, who presented advice to parents and educators on how to help children develop into confident, competent adults. learning together 5 Play is an integral part of a child’s school experience. A recent report by the Alliance for Childhood directly links play to children’s ability to master academic content: “Play has to be seen not as an opposite to work but rather as a complement. Curiosity, imagination and creativity are like muscles; if you don’t use them, you lose them.” At Burke’s, we balance the rigor of our curriculum with the firm belief that learning, like childhood, should be a joyous experience. On our fields, courts, play structures, and studios, as well as in our classrooms, our girls have ample opportunity for both structured and unstructured spontaneous play. playing together 7 We foster and support the physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of our community. We are putting this statement into practice in many ways. One way is our new lunch program, which not only fosters individual health and wellness, but also builds on our school’s values of community, inclusivity and sustainability. Another cornerstone of our health and wellness initiative is the adoption of mindfulness. In recent months, with the help of professionals from Mindful Schools, we have conducted mindfulness training with our faculty and staff and in-class sessions with students. The results are already apparent as we see girls across all grade levels incorporating mindfulness in their studies and broader lives. healthy together 9 We nurture and challenge each girl to achieve not only her highest academic potential, but also her creative potential. An example of our strong visual arts program is “Hats off to San Francisco,” a third grade art project. Building on their study of San Francisco, our third graders creatively integrated their lessons into hats that represented the city’s historical landmarks. Made of recycled materials, these fabulous creations were featured in our annual Arts Festival in May. The culmination of our dramatic arts program each school year is the eighth grade musical. Last June, the Class of 2011 performed, choreographed, designed costumes for, staged and managed an outstanding production of Aida, a fabulous accomplishment that reflected each student’s creative interests and abilities. creating together 11 Financial and Fundraising Report Fiscal year ended June 30, 2011 3 % % 3 4 % 8 % 82 % Endowment Draw Other Revenue and Support Parents’ Association Contribution Annual Fund Tuition Re venues 6 9 6% 4% % % 9 4 % 62 % % Depreciation Instructional Interest Expense and Financing Costs Student Financial Assistance Operations and Maintenance General and Administrative Salaries and Benefits e xpenses Summary of Gifts Revenues Expenses Annual Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $951,000 Parents’ Association Contribution* . . . . . . . . . . . . . 500,000 Parents’ Association Gift to Endowment* . . . . . . . . . 50,000 Memorial, Special and Other Giving . . . . . . . . . . . . . 55,000 Tuition . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $9,825,965 Annual Fund . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 951,045 Parents’ Association Contribution . . . . . . . . . . . . . 500,000 Endowment Draw . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 360,000 Other Revenue and Support . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 362,659 Salaries and Benefits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $7,424,215 Student Financial Assistance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1,100,082 Instructional . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 990,889 Depreciation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 682,077 Interest Expense and Financing Costs . . . . . . . . . . . 766,255 General and Administrative . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 536,612 Operations and Maintenance . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 484,428 Total Annual Gifts Second Century Campaign Gifts Other Endowment Gifts Total Gifts *From 2009-2010 Parents’ Association Events $1,556,000 $124,500 $7,200 $1,687,700 Total Revenues and Support $11,999,669 Total Expenses $11,984,558 Board of Trustees | 2011-2012 Officers Trustees Arun Sharma, President Ravin Agrawal, Vice-President Louisa Consagra ’78e, Secretary Evan Marwell, Treasurer Jennifer Caldwell, At-Large Jacqueline Erdman, At-Large Chris Lenzo, At-Large Wells Blaxter Catherine Brown ’80 Travis Brownley Laura Brugger Evie Davis Brooks Doggett Barre Fong Dana Goldberg ’90 Gretchen Hansen Chris Hauswirth Leigh Matthes Leila Minerva-Rivers Arrie Park MacGregor Read Amy Schoew Jeff Spears Paul Wattis Lara Witter Julia Wong ’83 Adam Young Ex-Officio Lila Lohr, Interim Head of School Nina Srejovic, President, Parents’ Association Bella Shen Garnett ’89, President, Alumnae Association From the bottom: Louisa Consagra, Jennifer Caldwell, Jacqueline Erdman, Lila Lohr, Travis Brownley, Paul Wattis, Arun Sharma, Arrie Park, Lara Witter, Chris Lenzo, Catherine Brown, Leigh Matthes, Amy Shoew, Dana Goldberg, Laura Brugger, Gretchen Hansen, Evan Marwell, Leila Minerva-Rivers, MacGregor Read, Adam Young, Evie Davis, Brooks Doggett, Wells Blaxter, Jeff Spears, Ravin Agrawal and Barre Fong Not pictured: Bella Shen Garnett, Chris Hauswirth, Nina Srejovic 13 New Trustee Profiles Wells Blaxter From Pittsburgh, PA, Wells moved to San Francisco in 1997 to begin his legal career as a litigator and in 2008 opened his own litigation boutique.
