Animal movements – 3 males to Groote Schuur Estate – Khumba, Enya and Hermon. There are now 5 males animals at Groote Schuur. All are good to fair quagga examples, no stripy animals are included in the group. REPORT FROM BERNARD •

Articles – Craig did a lenghthy interview with Farmers Weekly, and Bernard provided photos for Keri Harvey of Farmers Weekly – this article should be out soon Adrian Burton Frontiers in Ecology and Environment has contacted me to use photo further (I will forward email received today) Animals – Freddy at SMA injured his foot and had to receive veterinary attention – looks like treatment was successful – (update from Mick Dalton) Wedderwil needs to move males off asap as they have too many and some foals have been killed by the young stallions. We need to discuss where to move them as not zebra like, more quagga like. Alternate sites – we have been contacted by Henry Brink of Glen Frank, next to Pampoenvlei as a possible site for Quagga, no tourism, only personal use. Have not inspected site at all. Sales – Leon de Kock of Plett Game Park is keen to buy more animals again. Website -­‐ Studbook – this has been published online Updates of movies and audio to QP website – decision needed, quote below. o R 427 ) TEXT: list the PDFs as downloads o R 4,270 ) VIDEO: Convert the video formats, upload onto YouTube, and embed the YouTube video into the quaggaproject.org website. This means that the actual video will be hosted by YouTube (free of charge) while people will be able to watch the video on quaggaproject.org without leaving the website (please note: Videos not secure, can be downloaded) o R 2,562 ) AUDIO: Set up an MP3 player, convert 11 audio files to MP3, and make the audio files available within quaggaproject.org (please note: MP3s not secure, can be downloaded) Completed African Horse Sickness census – all equids and their position have to be registered for the Western Cape Veterinary Services data base. Bernard still working on register and studbook updates Health issues (refer to below photos) • The first animal at Boland Landbou has a funny ear and eye -­‐ 3 months ago I • thought it was from fighting (blood on ear and face at that visit) but it • seems to have healed unsightly. Could also be sarcoid virus (makes skin • growths on animals and is contagious). Hamish will most probably want to • dart and examine, which I agree is the way to go. • The second animal was bitten after we introduced 3 new males to Groote • Schuur. • Hamish was consulted and Jackie Pretorius kept an eye on the animal and it recovered without any intervention. 11

I FINALLY got the old notice board updated and a new one erected, thanks to some assistance at no cost from Triggerfish (makers of the Kumba Movie) I have a painting contractor repainting and restoring the actual “house” that the poster is hung in so this will also assist all that want to know more about the quagga, school kids etc Old board New board (painting of structure will commence this week) 13

KUMBA THE MOVIE The Quagga Project had enormous exposure with the release of the South African produced and filmed animated movie, Khumba. Anthony Silverton, the producer, was inspired by the QPA and Reinhold which resulted in the script. I was a t the premier and noted in the acknowledgements at the end of the movie one for Reinhold. The following are some of the many press releases that went out; 15

his exterior. Only when he comprehends that his difference is a good thing, can he look beyond himself and find the
courage to help the rest of the animals in the Karoo.
When researching Khumba, Silverston met with Professor Reinhold Rau, the founder of the Quagga Project
Association. Rau started the investigation that ultimately proved the Quagga is simply a subspecies of zebra that
looks dissimilar rather than being an entirely separate species.
“It is exciting to be associated with the Khumba story,” says Lardner. “The Quagga Project’s awareness will no doubt
now grow as youngsters and school learners are afforded the opportunity to visit the ‘live’ Khumba in one of our
locations on the slopes of Table Mountain.”

KAAPSTAD. – Op Tafelberg wandel ’n rolprentster.
Wel, nie eintlik nie.
Op 25 Oktober begin die animasieprent Khumba in Afrikaans en Engels in Suid-Afrika draai. Dit is ook die
eerste 3D-animasieprent wat in Afrikaans uitgereik word.
’n Jong kwaggavul van Tafelberg is nou na dié hoofkarakter van die prent genoem. En nes Khumba het dié
Khumba ook net die helfte van sy strepe.
Khumba is deel van ’n projek van die Kwagga Projek-vereniging wat poog om die kwaggaspesie “terug te
bring”.
So wat presies is die verskil tussen ’n kwagga en ’n sebra nou weer?
Volgens ’n veearts van die Tygerberg-dierehospitaal kan ’n kwagga beskryf word as ’n subspesie van die
sebra. Hulle het ook strepe, maar slegs op die voorlyf. “ ’n Kwagga is basiese dieselfde ding as ’n sebra. Die
oorspronklike kwagga is egter baie jare gelede uitgewis,” het hy verduidelik.
’n Veearts van die Panorama-dierehospitaal het dit beaam en bygevoeg: “ ’n Kwagga se patrone is anders as
dié van ’n sebra. Die gewone patroon van ’n sebra is slegs aan die voorkant van ’n kwagga. ’n Kwagga se
boude is heeltemal eenvormig bruin.”
Ironies genoeg is Tafelberg ook die plek waar die regisseur van die fliek, Anthony Silverston, die eerste keer
met dié dier kennis gemaak het.

A young quagga foal is the star of a new South African animation film entitled Khumba.

The coming-of-age story was released by Triggerfish Animation Studios and tells the tale of a journey of selfacceptance.
Khumba will soon take up residence in the SANParks reserve on the slopes of Table Mountain says Craig
Lardner from the Quagga Project Association.
“The Quagga Project’s awareness will grow as youngsters and students are afforded the opportunity to visit
Khumba,” says Lardner.

Ironically, this is where director Anthony Silverston first learned of the fascinating animal. He remembers reading
about the quagga as a child and being fascinated by the fact that an extinct animal could come back to life. He
later recognized the potential for this extraordinary creature to be a strong visual metaphor for anyone struggling
with identity.
“If we continue to see our differences as something negative, at what point will we really be okay with ourselves?”
he asks.
Khumba will be released in South Africa by Indigenous Film Distribution on 25 October.
