Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurti Vasút Zrt. Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurth Railway Corp. YOUR VERSATILE PARTNER gysev hírek MISSION The aim of GYSEV Zrt. is to be a regional transport company in Western Hungary and Eastern Austria that offers passenger-focused and integrated services and develops dynamically. The company considers its main task to strengthen the role of public transport, to offer quality passenger transport services that correspond to the needs of the region, to continuously develop its products and to enable interoperability between the different transport sectors by ensuring complex services. REGIONAL COOPERATION GYSEV has been a member of the Vienna-based transport association VOR (Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region) since 1994. The company involves Sopron in the regular, hourly traffic towards Vienna and has an important regional role in the area of Szombathely. Because of its geographical location, GYSEV is already now a dominant player in the field of regional crossborder railway transport. Along the railway lines of Western-Transdanubia that are operated by GYSEV, one has recently started to establish the intermodal transport system, in line with Hungarian government objectives and together with the regional bus companies “Volán”. By improving the quality of services – especially that of travel conditions and provision of information – we are able to provide a service that is more attractive to the passengers, generates more revenue for the service providers and serves the needs of the passengers – an important factor for the customer – better. The co-ordination of the activities of companies supplying the regions can boost public transportation of the Western-Transdanubian region, facilitates a systematic and competitive satisfaction of traffic needs, a co-operative fulfilment of the traffic demand of bigger settlements and their agglomerations and the use of mutual benefits. GYSEV Zrt. works with the bus companies of the region closely together in order to exploit mutual benefits and to offer public transportation services that have a common image and provide better travel conditions. GYSEV AWARDS Till 2013, GYSEV has been awarded with the title Business Superbrands five times, in recognition of the management’s decisions that keep the company on development path, as well as of its employees who work dedicatedly for the company. 2 www.gysev.hu GYSEV – Velünk élmény az utazás! 3 THE PAST AND THE PRESENT OF GYSEV ZRT. It was Baron Viktor Erlanger who initiated the establishment of the railway company in 1872. The foundation was sanctioned by Act No. XXVII of 1872, that bore the signature of Emperor Franz Joseph. The primary goal of the company was to transport the Hungarian grain abroad, mainly to the Austrian market. GYSEV introduced the so called “zone system” in 1890, which generated a considerable growth in passenger numbers. Thanks to the well-chosen tariffs, the public company’s revenue grew rapidly around the turn of the century and afterwards. The railway, which at that time still lay within the territory of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, lived through the most difficult period of its history after the First World War, when its network was virtually bisected, following the creation of the new state borders. The Treaties of Trianon and St. Germain however, helped to bridge the unexpected gap: uniquely enough, a separate paragraph of law obligated the transportation ministries of both countries to uphold the common operation of the railway. Consequently, Austria endorsed the modification of the concession charter in 1923 and issued its own concession for the lines being on Austrian territory - as private railway. This line-up has not changed ever since: GYSEV Zrt. is still a single company with headquarters in Sopron that maintains two separate undertakings in Austria and Hungary with their respective ownership, economic and accounting systems operating in line with the regulations of the two countries. In both countries, the company is supervised by the Departments of Transportation. Hungary 65,64% Austria 28,23% STRABAG 6,13% Ownership structure of GYSEV Zrt. THE RAILWAY NETWORK OF GYSEV IS DEVELOPING CONSTANTLY In 2001, GYSEV took over the Sopron-Szombathely line; in December 2006, the line section Szombathely-Szentgotthárd. In October 2011, GYSEV became the leading railway undertaking of the region, when the Hungarian state entrusted it with the management of further railway lines: Rajka–Csorna–Porpác– Szombathely, Kőszeg–Szombathely, Szombathely–Zalaszentiván and Körmend–Zalalövő. 4 www.gysev.hu GYSEV – Velünk élmény az utazás! 5 GYSEV PASSENGER TRANSPORT Our aim is to increase the demand for public transport in Western Transdanubia and Eastern Austria by stimulating work and touristic traffic and providing quality passenger transport services that are tailored to the needs of the passengers. Key elements of this goal are continuous product development, an attractive and diverse product range, efficient communication and high-quality transport services. GYSEV acts as a kind of catalyst in the transport of the region, which is accompanied by the creation of interoperability of transport modes with the help of complex services. This strategic base concept is well reflected in the harmonized timetable and tariff structure that are governed by both customer and passenger needs. We aim to operate a common interest and communications network with other transport companies of the region in an intermodal system. The extension of our regional partner network is strongly connected with the exploitation of mutual marketing advantages with touristic service providers and event organizers. This way, GYSEV is able to offer not only regular train services but also group travels, special excursion trains and other kinds of services that are in close connection with the cultural events of the region. We not only serve touristic traffic but also generate it – the Széchenyi Museum Railway in Nagycenk, which is operated by our company, is an attractive tourist destination in itself. Since 2009, several projects have been started with the aim to refurbish and modernize these lines. Until 2011, railway tracks of a length of altogether 110 km had been reconstructed along the line Szombathely–Szentgotthárd and further lines are expected to be renewed, electrified, extended and made safer from 2012 on. Along the refurbished lines, we have established a central traffic control system and a high voltage remote control system and we have built new platforms with high (55 cm) platform edges. A modern and uniform passenger information system is available for passengers at our most important stations. In order to provide appropriate on-board information, our company has developed an own passenger information system (FeDuR). Maintenance and renewal of rolling stock are also continuous aims at our company. A significant milestone in asset modernisation is the purchase of FLIRT electric multiple units that will transport passengers on the lines of GYSEV from the schedule change 2013/2014. 8 www.gysev.hu GYSEV – Velünk élmény az utazás! 9 GYSEV CARGO Zrt. They satisfied smaller transport demands of certain areas and could be built cost-effectively and without special technical requirements. They were first used in the mountains to replace branch lines and connected several secluded places to the traffic of the country. In the 1950’s, the shift of the role of narrow-gauge railways to street transportation in the most places became increasingly apparent. In autumn 1969, GYSEV came up with the idea that together with the rapid demolition of the Hungarian narrow-gauge railways, the most typical means of railway should be preserved for the public and kept in operation. The idea came just at the right time, since the restoration works on the Széchenyi Castle in Nagycenk had started just then and one had had planned a memorial museum in the castle. A transport connection was needed between the railway and the castle and so it was clear that one should build the museum railway in Nagycenk, starting from the station Fertőboz of GYSEV. Construction of the 760 mm wide track began in the summer of 1970. The first section of the planned line network was built on the place of the industrial track of the former sugar factory of Nagycenk, between the stations of Fertőboz and Barátság. The most beautiful part of this section is the bridge with three openings above the river Ikva and the embankment next to it. The second line section was completed in 1972. This branches off from the first section beside Nádtelep and leads with numerous curves through a beautiful area, before finally reaching – after 2400 m – the station of the Széchenyi Castle. The engine shed of the Museum Railway in Fertőboz was completed simultaneously with the new line section. The building can hold up to four locomotives. Since 1973, the Museum Railway has been owned by the Transport Museum. THE MUSEUM RAILWAY TODAY The railway is operated by GYSEV Zrt. between Nagycenk and Fertőboz, with children doing the on-board train service. In spite of the fact that the museum railway is only 3600 m long, it is quite popular among both young and adult “railway fans”. In the park next to the stop “Kastély” (castle) in Nagycenk, in the vicinity of the unique linden alley, a new playground and railway park awaits young and old. The open-air museum presents locomotives and railway cars that had once been used in the different regions of Hungary and visitors can also try out the train swing and the steam hamster wheel. “András”, the steam locomotive and the wagons were built at the beginning of the century; “Kiscenk“, the diesel locomotive, which has been on duty on the 3600 m-long line since 2003, in 1950. 12 www.gysev.hu GYSEV – Velünk élmény az utazás! 13 CATERING Hotel Sopron The hotel of GYSEV Zrt. Moreover, we strive to respond to the needs of society, as well as to those of our immediate and wider environment. Our company pays special attention to environmental protection, waste management, noise reduction, the prevention of accidents and the increasing of the environmental awareness of our employees. Being one of the biggest employers of the region, the GYSEV group has a huge responsibility towards the people and families who live within the catchment area of its operation. The social responsibility program of GYSEV started in January 2011 focuses on two main target groups: on the one hand, on the transmission of the knowledge and experiences of the older generation and on the other hand, on youngsters between 18–25 years, where the aim is to increase traffic awareness and safe traffic behaviour. GYSEV has supported several events, programs and civil organisations in the previous years, whereby it is deservedly appreciated as main supporter in the region. The main emphasis at our company lies on the propagation of traffic safety, the support of local civil organisations as well as local child and youth programs. QUALITY ASSURANCE To support the success of our work and to increase customer and employee satisfaction, we have introduced an Integrated Management System (IMS) regarding quality assurance, traffic safety, occupational safety and environmental protection.
