a bpi guide for identifying polyethylene suitable for recycling
A BPI GUIDE FOR
IDENTIFYING
POLYETHYLENE
SUITABLE FOR
RECYCLING
Reducing UK industry’s ‘carbon
footprint’ and improving its overall
environmental performance has
never been more important.
As the market leader in LDPE
recycling, bpi has a unique
opportunity to offer key
customers the chance to recover
and recycle their plastic waste or
introduce closed loop recycling
schemes.
This factsheet is designed to give
you the information you need to
help understand our capabilities.

Facts
— Bpi is the largest recycler of
LDPE in Europe.
— We reprocess over 70,000
tonnes of plastic waste
every year.
— We have invested £18
million in state of the art
reprocessing equipment
across our sites.
— We have won a number
of awards for our closed
loop initiatives. and 100%
recycled products such
as Plaswood street/garden
furniture, Visqueen building
films and Green Sacks refuse
bags.

Management
Standard (EMS).

OUR CAPABILITIES
We have the facilities and expertise to process the following types of plastic waste:
— industrial
— commercial
— agricultural
— automotive
— domestic
TYPES OF MATERIAL THAT WE CAN HANDLE
Different types of plastic waste are processed by different bpi sites:

clean, redundant stock
or process waste)
Items that we are unable to REprocess
Contamination can mean that we may BE unable to recycle the waste. In general the following
materials cannot be reprocessed so if these materials are present they should be segregated
to avoid contamination of the useful grades. Our experienced bpi.recycled products scrap
purchasing team are always on hand to provide advice.
X
Flame retardant, high
molecular or cross
linked PE.
X
Laminated and barrier
films where nylon is
normally used. These
types of film are very
common in the food industry.
X
Wash grades cannot contain
other polymer types (PP, PVC,
PS etc) – must be PE.
Printed on Revive Uncoated – 100% de-inked post-consumer waste content.

Every tonne of plastic bpi recycles:
—Rescues a valuable
resource from landfill.
—Saves 79,300MJ
LHV of energy.
—Cuts sulphur dioxide and
nitrous oxide emissions by
at least one third
compared to using virgin
material.
—Prevents the release into
the atmosphere OF 1.4
tonnes of CO2.
—Reduces water
usage by 90%. compared to
using virgin material.
—Saves 1.8 tonnes

INTRODUCING
THE UK’S
GREENEST
REFUSE SACK
MADE WITH UK waste
farm plastics
THE GREEN SACK
FROM BPI RECYCLED
PRODUCTS
®
What do we offer?
Nothing less than the strongest and greenest refuse sack on the UK
—
market – The Green Sack®.
— With a carbon footprint at least 35% lower than any other refuse sack
currently available on the UK market, Green Sacks are good for the
environment, good for your customers and good for you!
ULTRA LOW CARBON
FOOTPRINT
—The Green Sack® is available in a comprehensive range of bag on
the roll and flat pack formats including refuse sacks, swing and
pedal bin liners, garden and rubble sacks.
—A range of closure options including, tie tie, draw string and the
innovative tuk lok closure method.
Why Green Sacks are good for the environment?
—65% of the UK’s plastic waste is currently shipped abroad where it is
sorted (often by hand) and recycled into goods, most of which is
shipped back to Europe.*
But
—bpi’s Green Sacks are 100% recycled with a high percentage of
recycled farm films (such as bale wrap and crop cover) that are:
— Sourced only from farms in the UK & Ireland.
— Reprocessed only in UK plants.
— Provides a super strength film.
—
That means each Green Sack has far fewer ‘product miles’ than
any imported product and this, combined with using 33% less
material than standard refuse sacks without any reduction in
quality, gives The Green Sack® the lowest carbon footprint of
any refuse bag on the UK market.**

Why green sacks are THE
environmental choice?
Imported refuse sacks from the Far East could
generate nearly three times the emissions
of CO2 than The Green Sack®. Moreover,
compared to using virgin polythene it is
estimated that each tonne of polythene bpi
recycles:
CO2 Emissions

Green Sack
UK/European 100%
Recycled Sack
— Saves 1.8 tonnes of crude oil.
— Reduces water usage by 90%.
Tear Resistance
— Reduces energy use by two thirds.***
Why Green Sacks are good for
your customers?
—In standard tear resistance tests a 20 micron
Green Sack has equal or better performance
whilst being a third thinner.
— Green Sacks are more resistant to rips and tears because the primary source material
includes tough farm polythene.
AND
— Green Sacks are made without using the amount of additives that reduce the quality of many rival refuse sacks.
