And this is what happened last meeting
JILLIAN VOLUNTEERS HER MARINE EDUCATION SKILLS
Sapphire Marine Discovery Centre Education and Events Coordinator and Sapphire
Coast Rotaractor, Jillian
Browning, recently spent
seven months in Lombok,
Bali, as part of the
Australian Volunteers for
International
Development Program,
which covers areas such
as health, agriculture, communications and marine
education. Jillian was the guest speaker at a recent
Pambula Rotary meeting, and talked of the battle in
Indonesia for “sustainable seas”.
After being trained for three weeks in Yogyakarta in the
Bahasa language, Jillian flew to Lombok. It took her a
while to get used to simple basic accommodation, the
wet season
heat, the
language
problems,
and the
challenges
of problem
solving
which
confronted
her each day as she tried to develop a boat
suitable to run an education program.
Her work found her in classrooms where teachers have no resources. Jillian worked on some
science experiments with the children. She was part of a coral water transplantation program,
where broken coral is attached underwater to structures to promote regrowth in an Oyster Farm
area. She also co-ordinated a Marine Educators‟ Conference held recently in Bali.
She found the lack of any rubbish disposal confronting, particularly on the beaches and
surrounding waters. Plastic water bottles and aqua cups were a particular problem. Turtle
hatchlings had to negotiate the rubbish strewn beaches to reach the water, often resulting in
death. However Jillian was encouraged to hear that two fifteen year old girls have successfully
lobbied the Bali authorities to ban plastic bags, which is a huge first step in the long process of
education.
Jillian is a fine example of a young professional adult in our local community making a difference.

Thought l had best ‘fess up’ and explain the serious info getting in to the Bully.
Most newspapers and TV news programs have their own “European correspondent” or
“Our chief political officer” and even our “Court reporter”, so our club has Rosie who is our
“Publicity Officer‟.
Articles in the paper, what happened at the meetings and numerous photos are all down
to the hand of Rosie.
Media magnates Rupert Murdoch, Kerry Stokes, and James Packer have all offered large
sums of cash to sway her to the „dark side‟ but our Rosie is staying true to her heart.
Rosie thanks as it makes my job heaps easier..

So here is the latest info for you all.
