OUR VISION The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children of all ages and walks of life joined together by a shared passion: to strengthen the foundation of community. With a commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility, the Y ensures that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive. Anchored in more than 10,000 neighborhoods around the country, the Y has the long-standing relationships and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. Though the world may be unpredictable, one thing remains certain—the Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, secure and connected children, families and communities. When my health was failing last year, I received a scholarship from the Y, and I took up yoga. My lung function has improved from 47% to 63%; I no longer take insulin or cholesterol medications. My transplant doctors are amazed and say it’s “impossible” for my numbers to increase, considering I’m almost 10 years post-transplant. Thanks to the YMCA, I feel great!” ~ Victoria Reed “When I went for my annual check-up I was told that I had a slightly elevated blood pressure. That prompted me to join the YMCA and sign up for Group Power. The classes are perfect: early in the morning, rigorous with great music. It's wonderful to work out with old friends and make new ones. Since starting last winter, my blood pressure has come back down and I even have some new moves for my Elvis act (yes, I have an outfit!). Love the YMCA!” ~ Rafi Baeza “Michael Kunn began swimming lessons with his Life Skills class in 2004 at the age of twelve. He is now an advanced swimmer and a strong member of the Oceanside High School Special Olympics Swim Team. This year at the state level Special Olympics swim meet, Michael earned a silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle. Michael has always loved the water and enjoys everything from swimming laps to playing water games during free time. “I feel I’m a better person for having known you,” Michael’s swimming instructor told him. “You’re always here with a smile and a hug.” ~ Michael Kunn, Oceanside Life Skills “The partnership between the Pen Bay YMCA childcare and the Rockport Public Library is wonderful. It has vitally increased the library’s ability to connect to more children. By reading to the children at the Y, we have shared quality reading time and great books with kids we might not reach otherwise: just one more way that the Y connects the community.” ~ Liza Walsh, Children's Librarian at Rockport Library “What a nice recognition of my husband's service to be offered the military membership. Having a membership at the Y makes it possible for me, my husband and our two daughters to participate in activities we love, without maxing out our budget. It is nice to be able to combine all of our activities in one facility so we can still have time together as a family instead of planning logistics to get from one spot to the next. We are always happy to refer friends to the Y and think the area is extremely fortunate to have this organization as part of the community.” ~ Patricia Tempio-Wilson “Since the first grade, the Y served as my daily after-school location. Here I learned to play basketball and made a lot of friends. I went on to win two state championships with Camden Hills Regional High School. The Y is where many of my teammates and I developed our skills. I am now playing basketball for Bowdoin College and just completed a summer finance internship at the Y. So the Y continues to have a huge impact on my life.” ~ Keegan Pieri Dear YMCA Members, Program Participants, Donors, Volunteers and Staff, It is with great pleasure that I can report, the Penobscot Bay YMCA is healthy and positioned well to continue our work meeting the youth development, healthy living and social needs of our community. Last year was another great year for the Y and with your support we continued to make a positive difference to those we served. Here are some highlights from 2012: Accomplishments In the past year, the Penobscot Bay YMCA: • Awarded financial assistance to every individual or family in need which included 2,701 of our neighbors, a value of over $200,000 in services. • Supported the Y’s charitable purpose by providing over $450,000 in free and subsidized services to the community. Funds to support this work were raised via endowment income, UMCC support, the Boat Auction, the Summer Raffle, the Camp Appeal and the Annual Support Campaign. • Generated a modest operating surplus which we invested back into the Y in the form of facility repairs, upgrades and staff development. • Provided services for nearly 5,000 members. In addition, we registered over 20,000 individuals in programs, and opened a new childcare center at the Midcoast Recreation Center to meet the quality childcare demand in our community. • Helped provide nearly 3,000 meals to children and families during the summer, through partnerships with RSU 13, the USDA and JTG Foundation. 2012 Strategic Plan Your Y is working to meet a number of challenges in our community. We are: • Continuing to meet the evolving health needs of individuals of all ages in our service area, through high quality programs, facilities and collaborations ◊ 17% increase in senior wellness programs ◊ Provided over 2,000 free swim and wellness classes • Remaining financially viable in challenging times by raising revenues and controlling costs ◊ Added three new families to the Heritage Society ◊ Reduced the number of special events from four to three ◊ Reduced organizational debt by $30,000 • Responding to the service needs in Southern Knox County by establishing a physical and/or a programmatic presence in that area ◊ Conducted New Service Analysis and determined that expansion to Thomaston Green was not feasible at the current time ◊ Expanded Childcare Offsite Program to Midcoast Recreation Center (MRC) Finally, as mentioned last year, due to premature product failure, we are now replacing the metal roof on our 116 Union Street Facility. With the roof manufacturer, general contractor and architects all out of business this expense will be borne by the Y. Thus, while we continue to have a lot to do, we enter this new phase with confidence and excitement. Many, many thanks for all of your support and encouragement. Sincerely, Jim Bowditch, YMCA Board President 14 NO ONE TURNED AWAY WORKING FOR A GREATER PURPOSE 3 CONFIDENT KIDS TODAY AND CONTRIBUTING AND ENGAGING ADULTS TOMORROW. Fiscal year ending December 2012 Other 4% NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN. We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around the nation are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaging adults tomorrow. 2012 HIGHLIGHTS: • • Our happy campers made new friends, laughed and had an experience that will last their lifetime. To meet the needs of our families, we were delighted to grow to over 90 campers per week. Through program and staff development, we expanded our opportunities in sports, hiking, swimming, and archery all while integrating our four character values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. The Y helps youth learn about being active and developing healthy lifestyles which they will carry with them throughout their lives. Whether it was youth gaining the confidence that comes from learning to swim, or the building positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, the Y is about building the whole person from the inside out. Over 825 youth participated in swim team, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, North Atlantic Gymnastics and Dance programs. ◊ Girl’s North Atlantic Gymnastics Academy’s competitive team finished 3rd overall in the 2012 State Competition in level 3. ◊ The Y’s Sailfish Swim Team took 3rd place in the State YMCA Swim Meet. • Children in our Child Care Programs were provided a safe place to learn skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through Y values. ◊ Working with our community partner, 5210 Let’s Go!, we have increased physical activity and learned about healthy eating by implementing the 5210 message (5 or more fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks, more water and low fat milk a day). ◊ 5210 Let’s Go! awarded a grant to our Kids Club Afterschool Program allowing our youth to enjoy new outdoor activities such as snow shoeing. Because of the quality care and reputation of this program, we are proud to be serving three times as many families in our community. • 4 THE Y NURTURES POTENTIAL Programs Membership Government Grants Contributions & Special Events Other $1,246,616 $1,063,807 $359,583 $381,000 $140,532 39% 33% 11% 13% 4% 35% 32% 10% 18% 5% TOTAL REVENUE $3,191,538 100% 100% P Contributions 13% M Gov. Screaming down Sugarloaf was nothing to me. I became a pool swimmer at age 59 because of serious knee issues. I could no longer do heavy weight training, and I couldn’t run at all. I was petrified when I finally joined Masters Swimming. I wished I’d been a high-school swimmer with a decent flip turn, but no one cares about my lack of past experience. I have learned so much from my coaches and my fellow swimmers – and I am so glad I embraced this challenge!” ~ Polly Ireland TEACHING RESPONSIBILITY 13 PROVIDING SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS FOR PEOPLE TO BE WELL. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where everyone can work toward that balance by challenging themselves to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through out many family-centered activities. At the Y, it’s not about the activity as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier. 2012 HIGHLIGHTS: • A part of being healthy is being physically active. To help encourage a healthy lifestyle, the Y held several road races with nearly 500 neighbors and friends participating. Races included the Annual Turkey Trot, Harborview 5K, the Heartwatch Program’s Pumpkin Walk/Run for Healthy Hearts 5K and Hope Triathlon. • By using a variety of safe yoga postures and breathing exercises, over 400 participants in our new Power Yoga Program were physically and mentally engaged. This program at the Y's Lower Lily Pond space uses 90 degree temperatures to relax and warm muscles. • Nia and RIPPED, two new programs, offered the opportunity for participants to get moving, connect and feel successful in their healthy living goals. Every day members dance, jump rope, interval train, lift weights, kick box, and cycle their way to a healthy and happy spirit, mind and body. • Many seniors challenged with balance, range of motion and relaxation have had the opportunity to experience a level of movement though our Arthritis Program that they have not experienced in years. • Hundreds of neighbors and friends forever changed the way they looked at many foods through a series of talks by Nutritionist, John Bagnulo. Participants learned how to become less insulin resistant and how to reduce inflamation with some basic meal or menu ideas. John provided an overview of human physiology and how it is being influenced by various aspects of the Western diet. • Folks from all walks of life experienced guidance, support, extra motivation and inspiration through personal training sessions at our Lily Pond Training Studio. The Y’s personal trainers coached 35 individuals weekly to help them achieve their personal wellness goals. 2634 PROGRAM REGISTRATIONS 12 Health & Fitness Senior Programs Aquatics Sports Camping Childcare Teen Center KCCHC 5,927 701 1,292 2,040 2,717 5,616 623 423 TOTAL 19,339 HELPING OTHERS ACHIEVE PERSONAL GOALS “The Y’s Group Power Class has strengthened my tricky back to the point where it is now pain free. MADE UP OF FRIENDS, SPONSORS AND BUSINESSES WHO SUPPORTED OUR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS. GIVING BACK AND PROVIDING SUPPORT TO OUR NEIGHBORS We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. That’s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join in or advocate in the name of stronger communities. 2012 HIGHLIGHTS: • Twenty local individuals volunteered to serve on our Board of Directors and gave countless hours of their time, talent and treasure through fundraising events, committees and campaigns. • The core of our existence is through the generosity of those who give to our Annual Support Campaign. With the support of over 360 donors, we were able to provide more than $200,000 in financial assistance for over 2600 children and families in our community. • Provided social and educational opportunities for our active older adult community, such as: a trip to the Boothbay Botanical Gardens, Thanksgiving potluck and a holiday treat exchange party. In addition, we had several Lunch and Learn offerings providing discussion on topics such as group travel, relaxation breathing and mindful meditation. • We are an ally and advocate for our communities. Last year, through our strong partnerships and collaborations with over 165 local businesses, corporations and foundations we were able to expand our impact on issues such as childhood obesity, education and the overall health and well-being of our community. • The Y’s mission is to keep membership and programming accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial capacity. A new initiative called Membership for All (MFA) is a household income-based pricing structure which helps keep the Y anchored firmly in its commitment to social responsibility. • Nearly 3000 free healthy lunches were provided to low income youth and families living in the City of Rockland with thanks to RSU 13, the USDA and the John T. Gorman Foundation. The Knox County Community Health Coalition (KCCHC) A Penobscot Bay YMCA Partner.... “Parents have enough to worry about these days trying to make ends meet. The last thing they need to worry about is their kids. That’s where I come in: I drive the kids from Hope and Lincolnville to the after-school programs at the Y -- to a safe environment where they can learn and have fun.” ~ Tom Turner 6 • Collaborated with Pen Bay Healthcare to provide free tobacco cessation classes for all Knox County residents. • KCCHC received: ◊ A grant from the ME Office of Substance Abuse (OSA) to increasing enrollment by 25% in the Midcoast Public Health District of physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses, dentists, medical assistance in the State’s Prescription Monitoring Program – to decrease abuse of prescription medicines. ◊ One-year grant totaling $16,750 to provide colon cancer education throughout the Midcoast Public Health District. ◊ Three-year grant totaling $45,000 from ME OSA to provide 12-2-1 (12 Hours 2 Change 1 life) a science-based program for adolescents that are using/abusing alcohol and/or marijuana, and misusing prescription drugs; and to provide marijuana use prevention education. • Expanded efforts by providing substance abuse prevention education, including “Kick Butts Day!” to the Teen Center staff and students.
