REVE GENERAL ! Statement of Intents First time I saw Volapük play was in the late nineties, in Czech Republic. They were an inspiration and an influence for arranging music and also for mixing the sound, because of their unusual line-up, not unsimilar to what we have with Metamorphosis. Mixing acoustic instruments with drums or amps is always difficult and there are many ways how to attempt it. The one of Volapük made sense to me and I listened to their albu, Slang!“ many times. Knowing the music well, I am already hearing in my head how some arrangements would work with the two groups combined. Drums, bass-clarinet and cello vs. two guitars, violin and cello, not to forget that many members play also other instruments. This is such a versatile line-up, that just thinking about the possibilities makes a musicians/composers heart pace faster. I can't wait for it to happen. Martin Alaçam, Metamorphosis The idea to create Rêve Général came to my mind last August 2012 when Métamorphosis played (for the second time) at Gare Aux Oreilles. The Métamorphosis team is really nice to hear and see : they are absolutly four strong musical caracters, but they are also quite funny guys being abble to drink all night long to change the world ! This has probably something to see with their slavic culture. Having already had for my part the pleasure to play with Richard Deutsch (The Music is an art of fight) I am convinced that our musics can complement itself and grow rich marvelously to create a unique universe, in the incredibly rich tones. By reflecting it little, I think that Metamorphosis and Volapük is among the rare European groups to have developed this sparticular style that we call up rock of chamber or contaminated chamber music. Three on four of the musicians of Volapük answered present enthusiastically to the Rêve Général project. 75 % of Volapük thus, for 100 % of Metamorphosis. That is going to be hard to negotiate the distribution of liters of vodka. Never mind ! We are ready to try it ! Guigou Chenevier, Volapük The combination of those two ensembles, both internationally active and both experimenting with the possibilities of their mostly acoustic instruments, can lead to a new, very fruitful collaboration. Already the challenge of combining 2 violins, 2 guitars, 2 cellos, 1 bass clarinet and drums opens a new horizon for compositions not heard yet, and opens the possibility of trying something completely new. Since both ensembles are experimenting with the song-format in their own special ways, a combined force of them will surely lead to something even more interesting than their own works involving artists from france, austria, japan, czech republic and turkey. Christoph Pajer, Metamorphosis Both projects proved to be innovative, for a long period of time, released several albums on well know record-labels, played on important festivals and have a fan base in their home-countries france, austria, czech republic turkey and russia. my proposal for the working style -each involved musician comes up with one track. no limitations – shall it be a fixed score for each instrument or a more free approach. everybody shall have his/her track-idea together before the first rehearsal. if there are any scores they shall be sent before, to make it possible to prepare. no "meet and let's see what happens" kind of thing. space for improvisations but in a predefined context. My very personal note is that the music of volapük was the soundtrack to some important moments in my life. Love the idea to work together on a piece of music! A new style of String Quartet using acoustic and electric instruments and soundprocessing, blending influences from contemporary music, punkrock, pop and ethnic music in a so far unheared manner. They recorded their first album "Contaminated Chamber Music",which was released in 1999 by the Czech label Rachot/Behemot, which was a host for a lot of artists from the very vital Czech music-scene, such as Iva Bittova or Dunaj. After releasing their first album, the quartet toured for several years all over Europe, from Belgrad to Paris, from St.Petersburg to Marseille. Then, the band found a new label (Leo-Records, a host for artists like Sun Ra, Anthony Braxton, Pago Libre, etc…). Metamorphis played notably at the Knitting Factory in New York (USA), at the Club Dom in Moscow (Russia), at the Ring Ring Festival in Belgrade (Serbia and Montenegro), at the Festival Alternativa in Prague (CZ), at Les Nuits Europeennes in Strasbourg (F), at the Festival des Musiques Innovatrices in Saint Etienne (F), Empty Bottle in Chicago (USA), the Worm in Rotterdam (NL) etc... Their second cd "Dip" (released 2002, LEO Records), Metamorphosis released their third album LUFF, already with their new cello player Jan Kavan. again in cooperation with Leo Records. Leo announced the album as « contemporary-pop-punkethno-composers quartet from Austria, Czech Rep. and Turkey ». Since then Metamorphosis played many concerts and tours in Russia, France, Czech republic and Austria was featured at the Austrian and Czech National Radio and got the Sagittarius trophy (CZ) for the best live performance in 2009. Right now Metamorphosis is working on its fourth album, which shall be released in 2013. December 2012 works will be exhibited in the Russian Museum in St.Petersburg (a collaborative work with the Russian glass artist Masha Koshkenkova). Metamorphosis is living today between Vienna and St Petersburg. "Their Music can be localized somewhere between the Penguin Cafe Orchestra and the Kronos Quartet, inspired by the modern classic of Bela Bartok as well as by repetetive minimalsim …" (Der Standard) "Metamorphosis are executing a successfulcross-polination between the traditional and the experimental with considerable verve" (The Wire). To listen to Metamorphosis : http://metamorphosis.bandcamp.com Volapük Volapük toured everywhere in the world for17 years (1993 to 2010) : Poland, Italy, Czech Repubic, Argentine, Holland, Ouzbékistan, Canada, New Zeland, etc… In France like everywhere else, Volapük played in the most innovative festivals (Victoriaville, Banlieues Bleues, Vandœuvre-les-Nancy, Macao, Isole Che Parlano in Sardinia, Burgos in Spain, etc…). Volapük played on the most diverse and strange stages, from squats to sheep folds in the highest mountains of Provence. Volapük has been mentionned to «Les Victoires de la Musique» for the music of the choreography by Maguy Marin, "Aujourd'hui Peut-Être".In 2007, Volapük changed radically its way to do music. From totally written stuff, they started a totally new adventure, experimenting a totally improved set. Impossible perspectives like in a Cornelis Escher painting. Volapük found a new way to improvise in a band, in a collective process. Volapük's basic idea is to let always everything open and possible. Since 2010, Volapük was asleeped. With Rêve Général this is the end of the night, and we can dream awaked again !
