Early Years Resource Pack Contents • Snow Play • An Introduction to Lyngo Theatre • Craft Activity • Other Schools Schools’ Performances • Risk Assessment The Show Snow Play Enchanting children's theatre company Lyngo (makers of Egg & Spoon and What a Wonderful World) return to the Lyric with a delightful new show all about playing in the snow. The Lyric and Lyngo Theatre Company are specifically developing this new piece of performance for our early years audience. Combining themes of Christmas, the seasons and home, this show will have magical interactive elements and lasts for approx 40 minutes. Although still in development, here is a sneak peak at the ideas Lyngo have been working on in the run up to arriving at the Lyric: • As the children enter the Studio they will be given some ‘snow’ (cotton wool wadding) to hold and keep safe. • The simple set of Snow Play is a house and garden. Winter has moved in and covered all the furniture in snow. • Throughout the show the hero (the shows main character) tries to remove Winter from his home, driving him into the audience where the children can use their ‘snow’ to cover him from head to foot. • Presents are also shared, full of ‘snow balls’ which are rolled up socks. Children at the front of the auditorium will be able to throw these at Winter as he freezes the food, decorates the Christmas tree and crashes a very special New Year’s Eve party. • Eventually Winter leaves and turns into Spring, the performance ending with blooming flowers, butterflies and finally an empty stage. Suitable for ages 2 - 7 A LYNGO AND LYRIC HAMMERSMITH PRODUCTION An Introduction to Lyngo Theatre Lyngo is a children’s theatre company that has toured nationally and internationally since 2003, bringing new and innovative theatre from Italy to many different venues and children. All of Lyngo’s work is designed and directed by Marcello Chiarenza, Chiarenza an artist and theatre practitioner from Venice, and all productions have his very distinctive style, based on the principles of ‘object theatre’ – everyday things which are transformed on stage: feathers become flying birds, a napkin becomes a princess, open a book and there’s fire inside. All shows are performed by Patrick Lynch (currently appearing in CBBC’s Razzle Dazzle) who has worked for companies such as Oily Cart and has more than 15 years experience in theatre. He was short-listed for the 2007 Arts Foundation Award for outstanding work in the field of young people's theatre. The music that is used in every show is written by Carlo ‘Cialdo’ Capelli, Capelli an Italian composer who has won many awards for his music for theatre and film and specialises in music for children. Elena Marini is the co-designer - looking after costumes and props. She has worked for the IAUV of Venice University assisting Vera Marzot and in opera for 'La Fenice' assisting Sue Blane. She has also worked in film and television, with institutions like the BBC and Disney. 'Lyngo Theatre knows the score when it comes to producing theatre for the very young' The Stage Craft Activity Following the performance element of Snow Play there will be a chance for the children to make their own festive treat. There will be two Lyric Practitioners on hand throughout the show. Once this has finished they will take the lead on the craft activity, however we would be grateful for teachers, assistants and all adults to get involved and help get crafty. The idea is for the children to make their own Christmas trees to hang at home or to display as a free standing decoration. Each child will be given two pieces of green card, pre cut in the shape of a Christmas tree with slits in the top of one and the bottom of the other, enabling them to slot together and stand up. From the ceiling of the studio sample Christmas trees will be flown down to give the children an idea of what they will be making. Buckets will also be lowered containing lots of options for decorations – paper, foil, stickers, stars, crayons and prit-stick glue. The children will then be able to decorate their trees before putting them together. For older participants there will be holes punched in the ‘branches’ so they can thread through ribbon and tinsel. There will also be an installation of Christmas trees in the foyer and entrance to the studio created by local young people working on a project at the Lyric Hammersmith referred through the Youth Offending Service.
