Asama-yama in 1783. Onsen manju is originated in Ikaho. The manju later spread all over Japan. Ikaho Stone Stairway MAP/C-3 Ikaho Onsen has a history of 450 years and is well known for the Ikaho Stone Stairway. Along the Stone Stairway stand shops offering local specialities. On the top of the stairway, lies Ikaho-jinja shrine. Kusatsu International Ski Resort Tenguyama Play Zone MAP/A-3 Enjoy skiing in winter, and sports such as grass carts and miniature golf from spring to autumn. Sainokawara Park MAP/A-3 Jagged rocks lie down and hot springs gushes out from all over the place. “Sainokawara Open-air Bath” in the park is 500m2, the largest in Kusatsu. Scenic spot, Agatsuma Gorge MAP/B-3 This is a famous place for fresh green and autumn leaves. A promenade and an observation plat form are built. Yubatake MAP/B-3 Yubatake is located in the center of the area and a symbol of Kusatsu Onsen where 4,000 liters of hot water gushes out every minute. Shibukawa Heso Festival (July or August) MAP/C-3 This festival is called heso (belly button) because Shibukawa is said to be located in the center of Japan. Join the dance on the spot. Mizusawa Kannon MAP/C-4 It is one of the Bando Sanjusankasho (33 Buddhist temples in Eastern Japan sacred to Goddess Kannon). Kajika Bridge Red leaves Illumination (Late October to Early November) MAP/C-3 Enjoy the vermilion lacquered bridge which you will reach after you climb up the Ikaho stone stairway as well as the mystical scenery with the autumn leaves. Netsu no Yu MAP/A-3 Enjoy Yumomi and dance show. There are 4 large open-air bathes along the river. Ichinokurasawa at Mt.Tanigawadake MAP/B-2 One of the famous onsen in Gunma locates along the Shimagawa River, carrying old onsen atmosphere. This drinkable hot water is good for your skin and stomach. MAP/C-1 This is an overwhelming craggy place located on the east side of Mt.Tanigawadake, one of the Japan's best 100 mountains. Snow patches remain even in summer. Shirokubo no Ochako MAP/C-3 A traditional local event guessing the taste and smell of tea. Rafting MAP/C-1 Go down the Tonegawa River with a large rubber boat and enjoy beautiful scenery along the river. Norn Minakami Flower Garden MAP/C-2 Narcissus, tulips and cherry blossoms bloom. It opens from late April to middle May. Minakami Onsen MAP/C-3 This is a festival to parade beating “Torioi Daikos (drums)” whose diameter is more than 1 meter. Held on Jannary 14 every year. Nakanojo Biennale A big art event held every two years. Works of artist across the world are exhibited in various spots including closed. MAP/C-2 Located in the uppermost stream of the Tonegawa River with a beautiful open landscape of the valley and mountains. Takumi-no-sato MAP/C-2 About 30 workshops stand in this area. Enjoy painting Japanese masks, making pottery, bamboo works and soba-noodle making. Sarugakyo Onsen MAP/C-2 Located by Lake Akayako facing the Tanigawa Mountain Range. 6 Torioi Festival Hoshi Onsen MAP/C-2 Hoshi-no-yu where the source gushes out at visitor's feet is famous and historic. The whole building is designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. House of Tomizawa MAP/C-2 Tomizawa family was famous for sericulture in late Edo period. This house holds a one-of-a-kind classic structure. Lake Okushimako MAP/B-2 This is a bright cobalt green lake. The contrast with autumn leaves of the mountains is marvelous. 7 Spring in Gunma Gunma Flower Park MAP/D-4 A wide spectrum of flowers blooming beautifully all year. Yase River MAP/E-5 150 cherry blossom trees grow along the Yase River. This is the perfect time for taking a stroll along Sakura Promenade, which is a nature trail. Best season : late March to early April Cherry Blossom Festival at Obata Castle Town : Warrior Procession MAP/C-5 The Cherry Blossom Festival at Obata Castle Town features a noble band of warriors paraiding through the cherry tree-lined streets and around the old Samurai residences. When: first Sunday of April Kanna Carp Streamer Festival MAP/C-6 Over 800 carp streamers hung from Mt. Tsutsuji over the Kanna River to pray for children’s growth and health. The festival is held from late April to early May. Tennouzakura MAP/D-2 This huge cherry blossom tree is said to be more than 300 years old. Early May is the best time. Illumination is offered. Akagi Nanmen Senbonzakura Akima Plum Grove MAP/C-4 There are 35,000 plum trees and it turns red and white in the early spring. It is good for taking a walk. Best season: March MAP/D-4 This is one of the Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites. The 1,000 cherry trees extend for 1.3 km. Best season : early April to middle April 8 9 Fuji no Saku Oka Spring in Gunma Tsutsujigaoka Park MAP/F-5 MAP/D-5 This spot is famous for Japanese wisteria. There are 250m high wisteria trellis and a sample garden with 45 kinds of Japanese wisterias. Enjoy various shapes and colors wisterias. Best season : late April to middle May This is the world’s most famous azalea park. The best season is from late April to early May. Iwai Cherry blossom-Tree-Lined Path MAP/C-3 About 300,000 daffodils and one-kilometer of cherry blossom trees are by its side. Hanamomo Peach Blossom MAP/E-3 This flower goes into full bloom at places such as Godo Station and Obatake district, Sayado. Its peak season is from early April to late April. Misato Shibazakura Park MAP/C-4 Numata Park Cherry Blossom Festival MAP/D-2 Red, pink and white carpet phlox are planted in a spiral pattern over the hillside. This park is designed to resemble a pink hagoromo – a legendary robe of feathers belonging to an angel. Best season: early April to early May 210 cherry trees glow in the park and are illuminated in the evening during the blossoming season. Koinobori no Sato Festival MAP/F-5 Enjoy the Festival (in which its record for the number of koinobori (carp banners) hoisted was recognized) while also viewing cherry blossoms. · Koinobori :late March to early May · Cherry blossoms:late March to early April 10 11 Tambara Lavender Park MAP/D-2 About 2 hours from Tokyo. The scenery of 50,000 lavenders are magnificent. Summerin Gunma Isesaki Fireworks Festival MAP/D-4 This festival takes place along the Hirose River, which flows through the center of the city. When : September Denen Yume Hanabi Tamamura Fireworks Festival MAP/D-5 The fireworks are shot up on rice fields. This is the earliest firework in Gunma. When : middle July Isobeyana MAP/C-5 This sweetfish restaurant opens only in the summer. There is also a free footbath nearby. Open: late June to middle December Oze Iwakura Lily Garden MAP/E-1 A vast lily garden using ski slopes. The best time to see is middle July to late August. Hachimanzuka Sunflower Maze MAP/C-4 This sunflower maze is located near the ancient burial mound called Hachimanzuka Kofun. Best season: middle to late August 12 13 Sunflower Field at Lake Nyuko MAP/C-5 During the summer, this lakeside turns yellow. Best season : early August Oze National Park Summerin Gunma MAP/E-4 MAP/E-1 The Japan's biggest wetlands in highlands is truly a paradise on the earth. Visitors can enjoy flowers from season to season and autumn leaves. Lake Harunako MAP/C-4 Enjoy everything from fishing to trekking. In summer a fireworks display takes place over the lake. Roughly 3,000 fireworks light up the night sky. Ota Yoshizawa Yuri no Sato MAP/E-4 150 petals of 50 kinds of lilies bloom. During this time, there will be sales of potted plants. You can also try some lily tempura. Best season : early June to middle June Fujido Cave MAP/B-6 This is 2.2 km. It was explored by a Buddhist monk roughly 400 years ago. He gave stones in the cave homes associated with. 14 15 Konaka Otaki Falls MAP/E-3 The view from Kesakakebashi, a thrilling suspended bridge with stairs, is spectacular. Autumnin Gunma Shiga Kusatsu Kogen Route MAP/A-2 , A-3 , B-3 Leaves of trees near the top of Mt. Kusatsu-Shiranesan change the color to red and yellow in early September. Showanomori Sansou MAP/D-3 There are golf courses reflecting the image of Augusta, an honorable golf course of the world, and accommodations. Manza Highway MAP/A-3 This highway offers spectacular autumn leaves. Ebisuko Festival MAP/E-4 This festival is held annually at Nishinomiya-jinja Shrine. It gets crowded with people who come to for a prosperous business. On the first night of the festival, the festivities go on all night. When : November 19 and 20 Fukiware-no-taki Falls MAP/D-2 This is called Niagara of the East with 7 meters in height and 30 meters in width. Beauty of the gorge and autumn leaves seen from a promenade and a viewing stand is overwhelming. 16 17 Autumnin Gunma Sakurayama Park Hanadaka Flower Hill Lookout MAP/C-5 A beautiful garden planted with field mustard, cosmos and other seasonal flowers with a panoramic view of the mountains of the Kanto Plain. MAP/D-6 There are 7,000 Fuyuzakura trees and autumn leaves. The Fuyuzakura is designated as a national place of scenic beauty and a natural treasure. Best season : middle November to middle December Nagame Entertainment Theater MAP/E-4 This wooden, two-story building was built in 1937. During the fall, the Kanto Kiku (Chrysanthemum) Display is held at Nagame Park. Mountain Hike Enjoy hiking the mountains in Gunma. The photo is Mt. Iwabitsu-yama. (MAP/B-3) Mt. Akagi-yama MAP/D-3 It is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan. Along the outer rim of the crater, near Lake Akagi Onuma, you can enjoy hiking or trekking. 18 19 Winter in Gunma Kitakaruizawa Fire Festival MAP/A-4 Approximately 4,000 candles are placed all over the snowfield, which creates a fantastic world with drum playing and fireworks. Winter Sports Gunma is surrounded by mountains, blessed with snow. Swans (Gabanuma Pond) MAP/F-5 Swans flock into the area near Gabanuma Pond in Ora Town. The best season is between late January and early February. Hachiojiyama Park MAP/E-4 In the winter, the Christmas light illumination is appealing. when : middle November to early January 20 21 Joshu Yakiman Festival MAP/D-5 Okushi Manju (buns on large skewers)- which are made inside Isesaki-jinja Shrine by grilling four buns 55 cm in diameter on a single skewer over a charcoal fire- are distributed to the crowd to give them good fortune. When : January 11 Winter in Gunma Yukake Festival MAP/B-3 Held in the morning of the midwinter every year in Kawarayu Onsen. There is filled with vapor and hot air. Haruna-jinja Shrine MAP/A-4 Fun event held in February every year! MAP/C-4 This magnificent shrine is one of the most well-known spiritual spots in the Kanto region. The amazing honden (main sanctuary) blends in to the boulders surrounding it. The shrine’s harmony with its natural surroundings is one of its main charms. Haruna Shrine is even more alluring under a veil of snow. 22 Asama Kogen Snowballing Tournament Snowfield on Mt. Akagi-yama MAP/D-3 In this vast natural environment which is close to Tokyo you can enjoy ice fishing for Japanese smelt or walking in snowshoes. 23 Nukisaki-jinja Shrine History·Culture MAP/C-5 This Shrine was said to be established in 530. The main sanctuary holds a unique design of being located at the bottom of the approach. It has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Rinkokaku MAP/D-4 This is a guest palace built in the Meiji period where the Meiji Emperor and the imperial family stayed. The wooden buildings and the Japanese garden convey the Japanese spirit to people today. Myogi-jinja Shrine MAP/B-5 It is located on Mt. Hakuunzan, the main peak of Mt. Myogisan and has a history of 1500 years. The magnificent main shrine is beautifully built and engraved. The Three Stelae of Kozuke (Kozuke Sanpi) MAP/C-5, D-5 These three ancient stone monuments have been nominated in Japan for UNESCO Memory of the World listing. They are one of Japan’s most precious treasures for learning about our ancestors’ lives. Akagi-jinja Shrine Kashozan Mirokuji Temple MAP/D-2 The Japan's biggest mask of a long-nosed goblin or Tengu with 6.7 meters in face length and 2.7 meters in nose height is held in the temple. 24 Aputo no Michi MAP/B-4 The former railroad tracks crossing the Usui Pass have been made into a nature trail. Enjoy natural surroundings such as “Meganebashi” (Spectacles Bridge)”, which is an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and Lake Usuiko. MAP/D-3 This shrine has the legend of two beautiful princesses- Fuchinahime and Akagihime. It is said that women’s wishes (such as fulfillment in love and marriage fortune) will come true. 25 Kimono Fitting History·Culture This activity is organized by the Kiryu Orihime Club. It is held on the first Saturday of each month. You should take a walk in Kimono around the streets of Kiryu. Fee : 3,000 yen Tomioka Silk Mill (World Heritage Site) MAP/C-5 Takayama-sha Sericulture School (World Heritage Site) MAP/D-5 This facility was a government-run model spinning mill and was established by the Meiji government in 1872. It achieved the mass production of high-quality raw silk and made significant contributions to the spread of silk all around the world. It was an educational institution for silk cultivation founded by Chogoro Takayama. He established seion-iku, a method of carefully regulating ventilation, temperature and humidity. Students from all over Japan studied at this institution. Tajima Yahei Sericulture Farm (World Heritage Site) MAP/E-5 This is the old residence and farmhouse of Yahei Tajima who perfected the modern sericulture thechnique called “Seiryo-iku”, which focuses on ventilation. This is the first warmhouse for Seiryo-iku and the main characteristic of this two-story house is the “Yagura”, window for ventilation on the roof. MAP/E-4 Kiryuori Arafune Cold Storage (World Heritage Site) Kiryuori, the form of Kiryu textile, has a history of 1300 years. It is the best silk fabric in Japan, and has been designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan. MAP/B-5 Arafune Cold Storage is the remains of Japan’s largest facility for storing silkworm eggs. It makes use of cold air which passes through the space between large rocks. It made a significant contribution to the advancement of the silk industry, as it allowed silkworm eclosion to be carried out multiple times per year. Kiryu Shinmachi Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings MAP/E-4 Textile factories and old shops with sawtooth roofing line the streets were built over 400 years ago. Kiryu Yagibushi Festival MAP/E-4 The city bustles with the excitement of Kiryu Gion Festival and Yagibushi Odori, a traditional dance. When : First Friday, Saturday and Sunday in August 26 Kokeshi MAP/D-4 Kokeshi is handcrafted dolls. Try and paint your own Kokeshi. Daruma Doll Painting MAP/C-5 Take a look at Daruma dolls being made at workshops or try painting the beard and brows on to those faces. 27 Foods Joshu Ota Yakisoba (Ota) Takasaki Pasta (Takasaki) Ota city is called the town of yakisoba as there are many yakisoba restaurants. Try and taste the wide variety of yakisoba. The City of Pork Dishes (Maebashi) Maebashi City produces the best pork meat in Japan. Tasty pork dishes such as Sauce Katsudon are a local specialty. Okkirikomi This local dish is made by stewing extra-thick udon noodles in a broth with plenty of vegetables. Kokufu Chinese cabbage (Takasaki) It is a local specialty of Takasaki City. This cabbage tastes very sweet. Takasaki City has many pasta restaurants. Enjoy the taste of locally grown ingredients. Sukiyaki, the best hospitality dish Gunma has to offer. Sukiyaki warms your body up. Western Gunma has ingredients that are perfect for making Sukiyaki. Shimonita Leeks Shimonita leeks are a local specialty of Shimonita Town. Can only be eaten during the fall and winter. Tonkatsu It features a crisp batter coating and juicy meat. Ueno Village Mushrooms (Ueno) The mushrooms are grown by using sawdust from broad-leaf trees. Shimonita Konnyaku In Shimonita Town, konnyaku potatoes all over Japan are collected and processed. Tonkatsu It features a crisp batter coating and juicy meat. Local Sake/Beer Koshihikari grown in Kawaba, "Yukihotaka" "Yukihotaka" rice grown in Kawaba received the gold prize for eight consencutive years at "International Contest on Rice Taste Evaluation." Sake breweries and wineries storing local sake and beers produced with natural water are dotted in this area. Enjoy brewery tours and try tasting. Yakimanju Yakimanju is Gunma’s specialty snack made by putting sweet and savory miso sauce on wheat balls and grilling then. 28 29 Shinto Village Grape Land (Shinto) Fruit Picking MAP/C-4 Between August and September, the orchards of 30 resort farms are available, where you can pick your own grapes. Enjoy seasonal fruit picking. Yoshioka Town Ogura Grape Land (Yoshioka) Fruit picking (Minakami,Kawaba) Enjoy seasonal fruit picking in each season. MAP/C-4 Usually open from about early August to middle October. The types of grapes that grow here will vary depending on the time of year. Sakurayama Tourist Mandarin Orange Orchard (Fujioka) MAP/D-6 Four farms are located here. 4,500 mandarin orange trees have been planted on a 2.5 ha orchard. Enjoy picking mandarin oranges between November to December. Apple (Numata) Numata produces various apples rich in suger and tops the yield of apples in Kanto. Best season : late August to late November Fruit Picking Excursion (Shibukawa) Haruna Fruit Road (Takasaki) MAP/C-4 Many local fruit stalls stand along this road. You can enjoy picking fruit such as Japanese nashi pears.
