FRIDAY 7th MARCH
Lecture (1)
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) in
Jewish law
A most updated theme of global business administration
focuses on the social responsibility of large corporations. The
era of traditional capitalism by which owners and managers
are exclusively committed to maximizing business profits is
gradually replaced by a more social trend that that expects
corporations to consider broader interests. Surprisingly,
perhaps, ancient Jewish business law sources take into
account such considerations much earlier than the modern
CSR approach.

Piecing the Puzzle Together;
The Miracle of Purim
Why is G-d’s name not mentioned in the Scroll of Esther? Why
would a Jewish holyday have a Persian name? Why does the
name commemorate the tragedy rather than the salvation?
When is a G-dly intervention defined as a miracle and when
do we call it nature? In this class we will analyze the Purim
story as it appears under the Chasidic microscope and we will
draw lessons relevant to contemporary life.

Rabbi Israel Meir Lau
Rabbi Israel Meir Lau was born to a renowned
rabbinical family in Poland in 1937. He
tragically lost his parents during the
Holocaust and, as the youngest survivor of the
Buchenwald concentration camp, immigrated
to Israel at the tender age of eight.
He acquired his religious education at Yeshivas “Kol
Torah” in Jerusalem, “Knesset Hizkiya” in Zichron Ya’akov and “Ponevezh
Yeshiva” in Bnei Brak. He was ordained a rabbi in 1960 and served in many
positions since, including the rabbi of the “Or Torah” synagogue, “Tiferet
Zvi” synagogue, and rabbi of Northern Tel Aviv. He was later elected as the
Chief Rabbi of Netanya, where he established the yeshiva “Ohel Moshe”,
named after his father. In 1983 Rabbi Lau was elected as a member of the
Rabbinical Council of Israel, where he was the youngest of its members.
In 1988 he was elected to serve as Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv – Yafo, a role he
continued in 2005.
In 1993 Rabbi Lau was appointed Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel, serving
in this tenure for ten years.
During the years, Rabbi Lau continued teaching religious studies in high
schools, building his reputation as propagator of Judaism to Jews of all
walks of life. Rabbi Israel Meir Lau wrote six books. His best-seller “Do Not
Raise Your Hand Against the Boy”, released on the 60th anniversary of
Buchenwald’s liberation, is a memoir of his experiences in the Holocaust,
his education in Israel and the effect of his childhood memories on his path
as a rabbi and leader. During the same year (2005), Rabbi Lau received the
prestigious Israel Prize for lifetime contributions.
Rabbi Lau will be addressing us throughout the retreat - see pages 12, 13,
and 20 for more information.

Nachmanides, all outstanding scholars and physicists in their
times? Join this interesting lecture and analysis of Modern

Lecture (2)
Ethics of Competition Over Licensing in
Jewish Law
Competition is usually treated from the angle of sellers i.e., the
supply side. Although less distinct, competition prevails on the
demand side as well. Jewish law sets ethical boundaries on
competition among buyers, which are at least partially based
on an economic rational. These boundaries were frequently
excercised in cases where two or more parties contested over
a given franchise or license, especially in the brewery industry
in Eastern Europe. Economic concepts and principles relating
to such situations will be highlighted.

About Stresa, Italy
With its first recorded mention in documents dating
back to 988, Stresa is a town situated in the western
side of Lake Maggiore, and a highly-acclaimed tourist
destination. Once a favorite destination for Europe’s rich
and famous, beautiful villas and acclaimed hotels were
built for their enjoyment. Today, those establishments
echo the Stresa of times bygone.
With its lovely gardens and well-kept paths, the palm
trees surrounding many of Stresa’s estates contrast
beautifully with the evergreen forests covering the
mountains behind.
The province consists of three islands: Isola dei Pesactori,
Isola Madre, and the famous Isola Bella, so named for
Isabella, the wife of the Count Carlo Borromeo, who built
palaces and gardens in her honour.
Stresa features the Funivia – a cable car ride that takes
visitors up to the Gardens, and then further, to the
summit of Monterone. The awesome ride takes one up
nearly 1500 meters, and offers breathtaking views of
Lake Maggiore and its surroundings.
26
The beauty all around, the perfect climate, and the
unique character of the town all make Stresa an ideal
location for a luxurious getaway.
