As graduation project, I developed a 3D physics-based space shooter game, using Virtools as development environment. During the course of my study, I contributed to game-related projects for Philips, Microsoft, One Big Game, and the Rabobank, amongst others. In these project, I took upon myself many different roles. I was also committed to a 6-month internship with Xform, a small game studio in the Netherlands which developed several commercial titles. Game design and programming were favored, but I also filled the roles of level designer, researcher and concept artist. This resulted in the development of a broad array of valuable skills. Always taking an interest in online gaming, I have been an elected Council Member of EVE Online’s Council of Stellar Management for one year, which is the maximum amount of terms an individual can serve on the council. This council consists of CCP’s official player representatives, and are flown to Iceland several times to work closely with the lead developers to discern player concerns and provide solutions. Several of the solutions I proposed have even made it in game. During this time, the media company Submarine took an interest in EVE Online for the documentary they were making, “Another Perfect World”. They approached me, and accompanied me to Iceland. Later on, I assisted Submarine with the development of their documentary, providing them with valuable footage and advice on EVE Online and Lineage. “Another Perfect World” has recently been aired in the UK and the Netherlands, with other countries to follow. HISTORY Of course, the decision to apply for a Game Design study did not come out of nowhere. Starting with PC gaming at age 3, and creating paper-based games since age 5, I have always had a passion for gaming in general and the creative drive to make my own. As soon as level editors became a feature in games, I had an interest in creating my own maps and scenarios. Later on this expanded to using modding and official editing tools to add new content to existing games. Games I frequently created maps and mods for include Warcraft II, Starcraft, Freespace 2, the Baldur’s Gate series, and Morrowind. As you may notice, this includes games from the RTS, Simulation and RPG genres. Meanwhile I continued playing many different games across all genres, and I was an early player of Ultima Online, which can be considered the first successful MMORPG. However, over time the developers of the game made what I considered bad design decisions, and changed the ruleset for the worse. Not content, I decided to start up a freeserver, and program my own ruleset. This was rather successful, and the freeserver was well-populated for several years. ABOUT EVA JOBSE PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDE Having worked with a top company like CCP on behalf of the players of EVE Online helped me understand both the needs of the corporate people and the desires of the players of a game. From the unique perspective of a game designer, I found that I could have a positive impact, which is reflected by the changes implemented in game. I understand how critical the position of game designer is, as communication with all other departments in the company, and even with the players, is essential to design and develop a top title. One other thing I stand for is quality. Often, students have this stereotypical image of delivering half-finished work or not prioritizing well. During my internship, I was trained in development processes, and iterative development. Clear communication and prioritization is essential, and the routines I adopted during my stay with Xform have remained with me in later projects. If you are looking for a driven, highly motivated, and passionate game designer with a broad array of skills and high standards of professionalism, consider my application. Thank you for your interest! Eva Jobse, M.A. eva@evajobse.net
