You can say things like "I can't wait to get out of here" or "only three more years" or "only two more years" or "only one more year," but no one really believes they're going to ever be a senior until it's really happened to them. At least I didn't, not really, but sometime between the beginning of this year and now, it's began to sink in. I don't know what the exact point in time or cause of the realization was. Maybe it was getting my schedule and seeing that I was going to be saying goodbye to my basement locker of three years and moving into the top floor, walking in on the first day of school and strutting into all the senior classes I'd heard people go on about for three years, sitting at what I knew would be my last football game in high school, or holding my first college acceptance letter. Whatever the cause, it's a completely bittersweet feeling. Bitter, because, of course, I'm going to miss not only high school and seeing my friends almost every single day and having a large group of teachers always available who make it their responsibility to help every individual student learn, but also living at home and being as much of a kid as I'll ever be again. There's a very balancing amount of sweetness to the feeling too. I'm about to move on and begin my own life and forge my own path in the world. Knowing that next year at this time I'll be somewhere new, starting something of a new life, doing new things is exciting on a whole new level. It's making me feel the effects of 'senioritis' more strongly than ever. Part of me has already moved on and left high school behind in the dust. Sometimes it's hard to put any real effort in knowing I'm so close to the end. However, as a senior, teetering awkwardly on the edge of school kid and adult like all seniors are, part of me has grown up enough to finally see the reasons behind trying hard in school. The obvious reasons, like maintaining a grade point average to keep my acceptance to colleges and scholarships. And also more meaningful reasons, like the fact that it's so important to put your full effort into everything you do, whether it seems world-changing or entirely insignificant, because in the end I think it's the small things that really make up the sum of your life and, looking back, they aren't always so small, anyway. I am scared, excited, and proud to say that I am part of the St. Clairsville class of 2013. Volume 3 Issue 4 Page 2 Battle at the Creek By: Brooke Robinson The St. Clairsville Lady Devil’s basketball team opened up its season with a close battle against Indian Creek on Thursday, November 29th. Coming off of a not-so-good season last year, they started the game off strongly. According to Senior, Emily Delguzzo, “Our main goal of the game was to not only focus on boxing out (rebounding) and executing defense, but to focus in general.” Creek won with a score of 54-40. “It’s always hard to lose, especially one of your first games. The team worked really hard but our shots weren’t falling for us. We’re focusing on the next game now,” stated Moulder. The Lady Devil’s current record is 2-2. Keep it up Ladies! With six-foot tall Bree Berryman from Indian Creek, the Lady Devils knew they had a big challenge. “With our defense we played a 2-3 zone, and we were supposed to make her work for the ball, push on her, and make her make the mistake.” explained senior Emily DelGuzzo Senior, Ashleigh Moulder said, “Our goal was to shut her down, which we did at times. We were told to have someone in front and behind her, so she couldn’t get the ball. When we did that, it worked really well.” The Lady Devils continued to fight and the scores were often very close but unfortunately, at the end of the game, Indian The ladies and coaches preparing to start the Indian Creek vs. St. C game Strike!!! Junior Josh Yeager Wrestling By: Brandon Meier The St.Clairsville wrestling team will have their first tournament on Friday January 14th and Saturday Jaunary 15th. The wrestlers are as follows: Matt Carnes, Charlie Hall, Colton Stephens, Alex Timko, Logan Delong, Logan Thompson, Jonathan Bartolo, Cole Skags, Michael Furbee, Dalton Nolte, Seth Benge, Justin Callarick, and Cory Ernest. With coach as Joel Sanson, they were ready to succeed last Friday, December 15th. “Pain is temporary, but pride is forever,” Matt Carnes explained, speaking of the reasoning behind doing wrestling. Freshman Matt Carnes Page 3 One Step Forward, One Step Backwards By: Zach Oliver There were high expectations for the St. Clairsville Boys Red Devil Basketball Team this year, after going to the final four last year. They started their season with back to back games, Friday the 14th against Edison at home and Saturday the 15th against Africentric Early College. They would show no mercy, as they beat the Edison Wild Cats with a score of 79-20. They would live up to their expectations from last year Friday night. Saturday they met their challenge, playing a new opponent-they haven't played before Africentric at home. They put up a good fight but lost 61-58 Africentric barely squeezing out a win. The boys have many games left to live up to last year or go even farther. They might even go as far as state finals, which is just one step past last year. The holiday season has closed, no more shopping, buying, gift giving, etc. November and December are always filled with hustle, bustle; yelling, shouting. It can truly be a great hassle especially when society is looking for that “perfect” gift. All year people work to save up money; put it away for a special vacation or a new car, but along comes Christmas and wipes out the pocket book. Hundreds of dollars go down the drain to supply gifts to friends and family, so why on earth is it a season in which people would want to start any sort of romance? Well, senior Leandra Reed now has the privilege to be able to say that she has experienced that excitement. The Saturday before Thanksgiving, Leandra left the valley and flew to New York City. Upon arrival, Leandra traveled to an indoor soccer field where she practiced the music and marching for the parade, and later was fitted for the red and white marching band uniforms. She spent her time practicing, meeting new people, and exploring the city of New York. I wanted to learn more about Leandra’s incredible experience, so I caught up with her to ask her a few questions. RDD: How exciting was it to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Volume 3 Issue 4 Page 8 A One-way Track By: Frankie Berardi At the end of December and going into the New Year, the American people are beginning to see the foundations for the much talked about fiscal cliff. This cliff is surprisingly nothing that has to do with an overwhelming amount of government spending; in fact, it is much the opposite. Cloaked from the masses of citizens, the true nature of this threat is a cut to the deficit, but it is hardly as glorified as some may assume. Often the goal in a recession is to pay down the national debt, but all reduction comes with a price, and the greatest fear of making the attempt to bring down the deficit is to be stuck with a much deeper fiscal hole while middle income families suffer even more. average tax bill is estimated to raise 412 dollars, for the majority or sixty percent of families in the middle, 2,125, and for the top twenty percent 14, 173. The last number referencing the top twenty is an average including those at the base and the far top of the margin; specifically people with extreme amounts of wealth will pay over 120,000. These cuts, will of course, accumulate a collective tax on all American families. For households in the lower twenty percent, the Courtesy of healthreformexplained.com With these taxes, the pre-existing recession is assumed to get even worse. People will be fearful to spend their money or what is left of it, more citizens will become impoverished, and less and less Americans will be able to comfortably support themselves. The Gross Domestic Product is believed to drop to eighteen percent while spending increases at twenty-four percent. Page 9 The Angry Beaver: The Thoughts, the Views, and the Opinions of One Angry Mammal By: Addy Beaver Ever since the Newtown shootings that happened this past Friday, it's left me to wonder; were tragedies like this always relevant and I've just been more subjective to them as I grew older? Was this just a norm that I haven't noticed due to my young ignorant bliss? Then I realized that it wasn't. I've tried to trace this seemingly continuous stream of violence and tragedy, and the farthest back I've come is Waco, in 1993. So, assuming I'm not forgetting anything prior to Waco, this is an epidemic that has been ongoing for twenty years. When looking at this succession of chaotic violence, there are at least two common factors in each of these situations; Mental illness and guns. And obviously, since the "tighter gun controls" aren't seemingly effective, maybe it's time we took a look at the mental health prospect of it. I do believe gun controls could be tighter, in a sense. There's one particular loophole- which is more like a great big pit of stupidity- that I don't see eye-to-eye with. That being, the instance of purchasing fire arms at a gun show does not require a back ground check. First off, let me say that that is how Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold purchased their guns they used during Columbine. Secondly, what's the difference between that and buying guns on the street? Ones legal and ones not, yet they both produce the same outcomes. Also, the guns that were used in the shooting in Newtown were legally purchased and registered by the offenders mother. There was nothing illegal about those guns until the gunmen used them to kill the twenty children and six teachers that day. So, where's the issue with gun control there? Now, lets take a look at the other common denominator here; Mental illness. Klebold and Harris from Columbine both had mental health issues, Klebold being a manic depressive and Harris being a socio-psychopath. Brenda Anne Spencer, who shot little kids on a school playground across the street from her home showed serious signs of mental illness. The Sect from Waco were ultimately brainwashed into violence. Adam Lanza, from the Newtown shootings had obvious mental health issues, as did Seung-Hui Cho, the student from Virginia Tech who massacred thirty-two people, making it the statistically worst school shooting in American history. See the commonalities? It's prevalent that gun control is not the issue-to some extent. Yes, the loophole about the gun shows should be tighter. But in a lot of these cases, the guns were registered and purchased in a legal manner. So, maybe its time we take a look at the mental health side of the case and not blame the NRA. When it's all said and done, guns don't kill people-the people holding the guns do. Volume 3 Issue 4 Page 10 We all love to sit down with friends or family, a big bowl of popcorn, and watch old movies. Sometimes, the best movies are the movies that are old, but everyone has seen them. For example, everyone has seen the good old Christmas movies. Such as Home Alone, which just happens to be one of my favorites also. Another Christmas movie would be Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. This movie could be considered, in my opinion, a classic. All images are courtesy of Google Images. Another movie that is fairly old, but still popular is Christmas Vacation. Of course everyone loves the Griswold family. Frosty the Snowman is also another old, classic Christmas favorite. A Year Without A Santa Clause is another favorite, old Christmas movie. All of the movies I have listed, most people have seen and know how much they contribute to the Christmas spirit. If you haven’t seen any of these movies, I strongly urge you to watch them as soon as you can. Page 11 Worst Fashion Trends Ever! Jackson The James Bond movie series which began in 1962 is undoubtedly one of the best movie series of all time as not many series last more than half of a century. The series, created by Ian Fleming, focuses on a British MI6 Agent, 007 aka James Bond. There have been many actors playing the role of Bond throughout the years including Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently, Daniel Craig. I haven’t been a fan of Daniel Craig’s first two Bond movies, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, and I was skeptical of his third especially when I learned that Adele was doing the song and Heineken was sponsoring which meant he would no longer be drinking martinis, shaken not stirred. movies yet. Judi Dench returned as M for her final Bond movie and Q is now a younger man who is more familiar with the new technology rather than Aston Martins that are all decked out with gadgets. The best part was that we learn of Bond’s mysterious childhood at a manor called Skyfall. In the beginning, Bond is shot by a fellow agent while on a mission to recover the hard drive that contained the indentities of undercover agents imbedded in terrorists groups worldwide. Bond was believed to have been killed but of course, he was not. The villain in the film is an old agent of MI6 and his objective is to make M pay for what she did to him. The cast consisted of teenagers, making it more realistic and very relatable. When talking about the Singers, you’re talking about a two day dance clinic and days upon days of practice. In fact, by the end of the season, the St. C Singers will each individually have over 400 hours of practice in total. “I believe that if they want it bad enough, they can accomplish anything they want,” said Mrs. Myser. At the end of the season, the St. C Singers will be traveling to Disney to be recognized for their hard work and to have some fun, of course. This year the Singers gained a big crew of mostly freshman and a few rookies from each grade level. They also gained Mrs. Myser- the new St. C Singers director. “I always said that it would be a dream of mine to be a part of Singers in some way. An opportunity arose for me at the time and I guess I was in the right place.” said Mrs. Myser. When asked about the students, Mrs. Myser stated, “They have been very welcoming and enthusiastic. I am excited to see how their hard work will pay off.” The singers are working towards four competitions this year. They also have a parent preview on December 21st and are going to perform at the spring variety show. St. C Singers Director, Mrs. Myser Riddle Me This, St. C By: James Davenport When I interviewed Mr. Sleutz about the past quiz team match, he informed me that “It was a complete and utter shut out, and that the students preformed phenomenally.” They won three out of three matches bringing home another victory for St. Clairsville. He also wanted to inform us that they did, in fact, go to Wendy’s and that they bought: “one large vanilla frosty, three small vanilla frosties, and a small black coffee, and the total came to around $5.95.” The St. Clairsville Quiz Team has had a great start to a hopefully successful season. Volume 3 Issue 4 Page 16 by: Kyah Grady The Dragons’ World There are many different and unseen worlds in the universe. Some are similar to ours, and some are completely different. The world I will be telling you about is vast and magnificent. Many strange and unique creatures inhabit the planet, but the most magnificent of these creatures is the dragon. These beings are ancient and much more intelligent than any person could hope to be. They are as ancient as the planet they live on. As the planet was born, made of molten lava and rock, the dragons were simultaneously created. They burst out from the core of the planet, shooting from it like explosions of fire. They chose to name their planet Adalinda, which means “noble serpent.” The dragons have a noble and rich history, which I will soon tell you about. To be continued in February…. Page 17 Far Cry 3 By: Brandon Meier Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, P.C. Genre: Action, Adventure, FPS Adventure! Action! Mayonnaise (be advised: is not an instrument). Far Cry 3 is a tropical adventure that takes you in the role of Jason Brody. When you go to an island to celebrate your brother getting his pilot license, you realize that the island isn’t as friendly as you thought. You and your friends get taken by pirates into slavery. As if that is not bad enough, you brother gets shot by a lunatic named Vaas. You then escape and meet a man who will essentially make you stronger, and able to get your friends back. This game is full of adventure and action. The island is beautiful to explore and gives it a sort of vibe. Made by the same people that gave you Assassins Creed 3, you expect it to be good. While exploring the island you can hunt, and collect plants (for medicinal use of course). Many gamers have already stopped reading. If you decided to stay and read the review, you made the right choice. My thoughts when I saw an early preview for this game were, “This looks just like all the other games,” and, “All these vehicles and special weapons are directly stolen from other games!” However, when I first played it, my mind was blown. The campaign is based mostly around David Mason, the son of Alex Mason, and his team. However, early in the game, David visits Frank Woods (from the first game), who allows the player to enter flashbacks to play as him and Alex. If that wasn’t enough for you, move on to multiplayer! Here you have complete customization of 5 custom weapon classes, with the new added feature of removing your weapons to only hold a combat knife. Then after you finish annihilating people online, you can, either alone or with friends/complete strangers, to fight of hordes of the undead in the long awaited installation of the Zombies game mode. Currently there are only 3 maps you can play on, but there are more than just the survival game mode. The newly added Grief mode places 2 teams in the same map. Both teams must survive while deciding if they should help or kill each other. You can also join friends in Tranzit, which starts you in a bus station with the bus, which will take you around to every map (plus some others) one-by-one, with many secrets in each area. Televisions are no exception. After years of using a Panasonic 19-inch CRT television vintage 2003, many failed attempts to read microscopic text and much letterboxing demonstrated that my trusty tube was simply not cut out for use as my primary TV nearly a decade after its production. As a replacement, I’ve decided to purchase a 32-inch widescreen Sony Bravia and I am quite pleased with the quality. From the excellently contrasting rich colors to the crisp 1366x768 pixel resolution and it’s lightweight design, it certainly does live up to the Sony name of quality. With that said, let it not be said that it is without problems, the most noticeable of which is the poor sound quality. The bass is terribly muffled and sounds distinctively separate from higher pitched sounds. The color white also displays more intensely than other colors, leading to a rather bright picture. 32-inch widescreen Sony Bravia Page 19 Mrs. Marilyn Wagner Mr. Greg Bizzarri, Richland Twp Trustee & Family Wesbanco A. This man is Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on his birthday, which is a federal holiday. King was a leader of a civil rights movement, in which to protest against racial discrimination. Aside from this, he was also a Baptist minister. In 1963, King led the March on Washington, where King delivered his articulate "I Have a Dream” speech. On October 14, 1964, King acquired the Nobel Peace Prize, for being nonviolent. Though he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, he gained the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. On Martin Luther King Jr. day, remember what this great man did. The Late Martin Luther King Jr. Page 23 Inspirational By: Mickenzi Hughes It’s a new year which means new goals and resolutions. Around this time of the year, people start to think of new ways to improve their lives, to be better people, and to accomplish new things in their lives. In order to get inspired to make our own resolutions, we usually ask around to see what other people want to accomplish before the year is over. This year, we decided to make it a game between Freshman Chris Clark and Junior Cody Jackson. I interviewed both students and to make it interesting, I compared their answers. RDD: What is your new year’s resolution? Why? Chris: To procrastinate less because I am always doing work last minute. Cody: I don’t really have one. RDD: Did you complete your goal for last year’s resolution? Chris: Nope. Cody: No. RDD: What is your opinion on people who don’t stick to their resolutions or goals? Chris: I don’t blame them, some resolutions are difficult to accomplish. Cody: They are cowardly. RDD: What is the hardest resolution you have ever made and did you complete it? Chris: To play less videogames. I sorta completed it by not playing videogames for several months. Cody: To beat my brother in the Debbie Green 5K. Yes, I completed it. RDD: What is your favorite resolution? Chris: The ones that don’t involve me giving up videogames. Cody: I don’t have one. It’s a non-issue, so fighting it is Dear Garry, pointless. How can I boost my spirits when things are tough? Dear Garry, Dear Get Happy, Is mint really the best flavor of candy cane? Dear Candy Cane Novice, No. Mint is bad and you should feel bad. Just remember that there’s always someone else out there who is an even bigger loser than yourself. That’s how I get through the day. Dear Penelope, I have no idea what to do for my new years resolution. Losing weight is unrealistic. Diets suck. I just have no idea. Dear New Year, New You, Well, first off, you're in high school. So you shouldn't be worrying about diets or losing weight. Secondly, I always make realistic resolutions, that way I'm not dissapointed when I don't reach my goals. Example; Fold my laundry. Do my dishes. Drink Liquids. And, just for giggles, I throw one in that may seem unrealisitc, but if given the oppertunity, I'd so jump on it. This years being, kiss Adam Levines face and become his wife. Totally realistic. Dear Penelope, Some people are being really ignorant about the shootings in Newton. It's offensive and disgusting. How do I tell them to stop? Dear CareBear, Whenever something happens like this, there's always going to be people who are just.. not very nice about it, for lack of more appropriate terms. These people are usually the ones who don't realize how horrific these events are, and if they do, they're heartless creatures. Tell them to grow a heart and quit being a grinch.
