BOOTS
By Heidi Hahn
n the night of the 2013 Puttin’ on the Max it was
announced that a little cat was fighting for her life
in an emergency clinic. She had just received a
blood transfusion, and major surgery. No other details were
given. This cat was a young, beautiful, very shy, and obviously
pregnant teenager that was befriended by a Denver couple
who named her “Boots.” This story, unfortunately, is a
common one. A cute kitten or puppy is adopted until it
becomes time that he or she is no longer a free gift.
Vaccinations and spay, or neuter, can be an impossible
expense for many families. Abandonment in the alley
frequently follows, which is a major reason why the
MaxFund set up its public low-cost Wellness Clinic.
It took a lot of love, effort, money donated by you
MaxFunders, expert veterinary care from both MaxFund
Wellness Center and Access Emergency Service, and time
donated by staff and volunteers, but Boots’ story has a
happy ending. She has found a forever home.
In Boots’ case, everything went okay (despite no vaccinations)
until delivery time. She got out one live kitten before her
young body let her down; she couldn’t generate enough
power in her exhausted uterus to expel the others. When
they found her twenty-four hours later with the leg of one
dead kitten extending out of her, while she was vainly
straining away, the couple brought Boots and her one kitten
to the MaxFund Wellness Center and relinquished her.
A Caesarian delivered one more kitten; we also performed
an ovariohysterectomy (a spay – but a very complicated
one because of the infection that followed the death and
decomposition of the middle kitten). At first it seemed that
Boots’ problems were solved, but she had absorbed too
much infection and it went into her bloodstream. Her kittens
died from her toxic milk and now she is also facing death.
Boots was taken to Access Veterinary Emergency. Their
surgery and twenty-four hour medical care have pulled her
through, although it took months of rehabilitation at
MaxFund Wellness Center and in foster care before Boots
was ready for adoption. Foster care was particularly
valuable in her case because of her extreme shyness.
Once again MaxFund volunteers fill a critical need.

DO YOU KNOW MOE?
By Ilene Johnson
Moe is a sweet young Chihuahua who is only 10 months
old. He has an adorable smile.
FROM THE WORLD OF GUS
Spring has sprung.
The grass has riz.
I bet I know
Where Gypsy is.
Gypsy loves to dig the dirt.
Soil, not gossip, is her thing.
Flinging dirt with all four feet
Is, simply, everything!
We love the Spring
Because it’s warm,
And because it makes
The birds and bees to swarm.
Myself, I just love the grass,
Romping, rolling, wonderful feel;
Bursting out all over the place,
Grass must have God’s holy seal!
Pardon my little lapse into rhyme. They say that Spring
is when a young man’s fancy turns to love, or to baseball.
Wouldn’t it be natural for a silly young dog’s fancy to
turn to “dog-eral?”
PAW PRINTS | May 2014
He is an extraordinarily friendly boy who loves people.
There is also no doubt that he gets along very well with
other dogs. One of the volunteers who have fallen in
love with him said that Moe loves to go on walks with
other dogs, and has a wonderful time in play groups
with other small dogs.
As an added bonus…Moe also adores kids, and would
love to meet yours. All in all, he is a very sociable little guy.
Moe is very quiet in his kennel. He does have a very
cute habit that we have seen: he likes to growl at his toys
and attack them. It really is fun to watch. Of course,
we’re sure he has a lot of other cute habits that you will
discover when you take him home.
This sweet youngster is patiently waiting for his forever
home. Please come visit him at MaxFund.

A CAT’S UNIVERSE
by Snoopy & Gizmo
Hello Again
Well I heard Big D (Snoopy’s dad) talking about something called “genealogy.” He told someone that
working on it is his hobby. Evidentially some 2-leggers are interested in who they are related to and
where their families came from so they do this genealogy thing. As Big D is always on the computer I
figure he gets his information from there, but I don’t understand the fascination with knowing about
people who are not here. I asked Snoopy if he knew about it, since he travels with Mom and Big D. He
said that when they travel they sometimes go to visit people they have found to be relatives; seems
strange to me. Snoopy and I do not know who our parents are or if we have any brothers or sisters. We
are just happy that we have a nice warm home with 2-leggers who love and take care of us. My big
question is “what is a hobby and should I get one?”
Oh Bother! We had to hold Snoopy’s paw for 4 days while Mom went to get a new knee. She must have
really had to go quite a distance to be gone so long. Snoopy is just a mess when he does not get to go
with her. He comes up here, whines and lies all over our 2 leggers and steals all the love time from the
rest of us. I did not know 2 leggers could get stuff like that but if she needs another one I and going to
suggest she just go to a lot closer store, get one off the shelf, and come straight home!
Guess that’s all for now.

IF I WERE YOUR DOG...

If I were your dog…
I’d sleep more deeply,
I’d rest more soundly,
I’d feel that safe.
If I were your dog…
I’d lick you good morning,
I’d lick you good evening,
I’d lick your whole dang face!
If I were your dog…
I’d walk around proudly,
I’d bark less loudly,
I’d be that confident.
If I were your dog…
I’d never leave your side,
I’d take you out for rides,
I’d be a source of pride.
If I were your dog…
I’d be truly happy,
I’d be over the moon,
I’d be that grateful.
Hey, wait a minute – I’m all those things and more!

ABOUT GIZMO....
By Ilene Johnson
izmo is a year old Chihuahua mix. This
handsome boy is currently in foster care, and
is looking for his forever home.
Gizmo’s foster mom provided a very glowing report.
She stated that Gizmo loves walks, hikes, and most of
all, being with his human companions. Gizmo is a
quiet boy, but does get excited when he sees his people
coming home, and when he knows he is going out for
a walk. He dances around in circles and makes a singing
bark, which his foster family finds absolutely adorable.
Gizmo is able to take very long, strenuous hikes in
the mountains. His idea of heaven is running
through tall grass and wading in streams.
He can be a little shy at first, but warms up quickly,
and is quite a cuddly little boy. His foster mom also
reported that he loves to lie in the crook of your arm
while you are reading a book or relaxing, and that
Gizmo lies on her husband’s chest with his head
under her husband’s neck.
Gizmo also enjoys sitting on a dining room chair while his
human companions visit or have dinner. He is very polite,
and is fascinated by, and loves to watch what is going on.
He is also quite the ladies’ man – he loves his female
foster sisters, and cuddles with them, as well as
cleans and grooms their faces. He also gets along
with his foster brother. And, as if he does not sound
perfect enough already, he also gets along with cats.
Gizmo’s ideal home would be one with active adults,
and older, dog-savvy children. He currently lives
with a 12 year old boy. Although he loves other dogs,
he would be perfectly content being the only pet.
AND TOFU....
By Ilene Johnson
ofu is a gorgeous 6 year
old German
shepherd mix. “Tofu”
may seem like an
inappropriate name
for a dog, seeing that
they are hardly vegetarians, but tofu is
silky and smooth, so is in fact a really appropriate
name, since Tofu has a sleek, silky, soft black coat.
Tofu is a very sweet girl who was adopted from
MaxFund when she was a puppy and has been
returned to us for through no fault of her own. She
loves to go for walks. She is good on a leash, and on
a recent walk, I noticed how alert she is to her
surroundings, observing people, other dogs, and
watching the world go by.
Tofu would do best with an active family, as she is
not a couch potato. She does love to run and play.
She is good with other dogs, and would have to meet
any potential new family’s dogs. A new home with
cats may not be advisable, as we’re not sure how she
is around them. As well, a home with small children
may not best for Tofu, because she would love to lick
them in the face, and may well knock them over!
Tofu has been known to jump a 4 foot tall chain link
fence with the grace of an Olympic athlete, so needs
a home with a tall fence.
She is a lovely girl who is waiting for a loving, active
home. Please come to meet her.
Please contact his
foster mom at
beanharvey5@hotmail.com
or (303) 526-8129, so
that you can meet the
amazing Gizmo.

PET VISITATION FOR THE AGED
AND CHRONICALLY ILL
By William A. Suro, VMD
he MaxFund has had a long and very successful history in this heartwarming activity.
Everyone knows how much emotional, and
medical, value has been proven from the effect of
animal contact. In one case in our program an aged
patient in an “old folks” home had outlived all her
friends and family. She gradually withdrew from
human contact to the extent that attendants had not
witnessed any conversation with anyone in over a
year. At our first visit to that institution, one particular dog seemed to seek her out, didn’t want to leave
her bedside, and continued to whimper and “talk” to
her despite not getting any encouragement that he
could see from the patient. This behavior by the dog
continued in following visits and gradually the
woman began to hang her hand down to pet the dog
and be licked. Long story short: after talking to the
dog for a few visits, the woman began to talk again
with the attendants, and gradually came back in contact not only with the dog, but the people in her life.
Pet visitation programs require someone who feels
real dedication to the project. It takes time to qualify
the dogs (and a few cats), organize the volunteers,
find places (retirement homes, long term rehabilitation centers, etc.) that wish to cooperate with us, and
generally make it happen. When the leader of our
past program withdrew from the MaxFund Pet
Therapy Program, the program disintegrated.
We would like very much to find someone else to
volunteer to take over this program. If you could do
this, or know someone who would, we would appreciate your getting in touch with us. This enterprise
won’t make the MaxFund rich or famous but is one
of the many things that we can do to make God’s
world a more warm and loving place. We will change
the name from “Pet Therapy” to “Pet Visitation” to
remove the confusion from “therapy for pets” to
“therapy by pets.”

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PLANT
Courtesy of American Humane Society
hether in the garden or in your home,
plants provide us with immense beauty.
Unfortunately, many of those plants are
also poisonous to pets. Plants which are not toxic to
people, like the hibiscus and the Easter lily family,
may cause renal failure in cats and excessive fluid
loss in dogs. A morsel of mistletoe can cause digestive upset as well as irregular heartbeats and possibly
cardiac shock in pets. Common houseplants, like the
philodendron and Dieffenbachia (dumb cane), contain
oxalate crystals that can cause your pet’s mouth and
throat to swell, making him unable to eat.
Because pets chew on almost anything, you’ll want to
remove or secure plants that are especially dangerous
to your pet. Learn the types and names or plants that
you have in your yard in case of an accident.
If your pet does chew on a plant, immediately
remove the plant from their mouth and rinse their
mouth out gently with water. Identify the plant your
pet ate and call your veterinarian. Watch for excessive or
foamy salivation and changes in the skin around the
mouth, eyes, or paws.

CATS BEING CATS
Cats are at their best when simply being themselves
By Franny Syufy; About.com
Although this article attempts to give cats human-like attributes, as we humans are prone to do, please read it
with a grain of salt. We all know that cats are at their very best when they are being themselves: wonderful,
furry individuals, mysterious, elusive, and ever-changing.
Cats reason and scheme.
everal years ago, we had two cats rescued from the local shelter, named Tiger and Figero. One evening,
Hubby (heretofore to be known as "Asa") and Tiger were enjoying a little after-dinner reparteé; as they
watched television, Tiger was curled up on Hub's lap, blissfully enjoying a little ear-scratching. Figero
watched this scene sulkily for a few moments, her turned-back ears and lashing tail signalling her annoyance.
Finally, she visibly relaxed and gave a provocative little cry, a sort of “chirrup”. Tiger’s ears perked (he was
always game for a little play), and Figero (the hussy),winked and “chirirupped” again. In a flash, Tiger was off
Hub's lap, racing to the bait. They nearly collided mid-path, as Figuero raced past him toward the prize, the lap.
In those days, Asa and I had not yet learned to respect our cats' dignity, and our raucous laughter laid back
the ears of a very embarrassed Tiger, as he washed in an effort to compose himself. Figuero just smiled and
purred, as she enjoyed the comfort of the lap.
A few conclusions are apparent from this small vignette:
1. Figuero expressed emotion: Jealousy.
2. Figuero demonstrated reasoning: She knew the lap would hold only *one* cat.
3. Figuero schemed to trick Tiger off Asa’s lap, and successfully carried it through.
4. Tiger was extremely embarrassed by the entire episode.
5. Tiger learned from this lesson: The next time Figero pulled this trick he ignored her.
Cats understand reading.
If you doubt my words, just try to spread out and enjoy your morning paper, with a cat in the house. You know
exactly what will happen, don't you? Yep, His Honor will awaken, stretch, yawn, and casually stroll to you, hop
from floor to lap to table in a wink and gracefully arrange himself exactly in the center of the article you are
reading. Heaven help you if you try to dislodge him from his position. What cats understand about reading, is
that it is an engrossing occupation that their humans assume, which takes attention away from them. They view
your reading as a challenge to assert their primary place in your attention.
Cats are jealous of human competition.
Our oldest cat, Bubba, was found by my son as a kitten several years ago, playing with the river-rats at the bridge-head
nearby. Asa emphatically told my son and I, "You have three days to find him a home. We don't need another cat."
A couple of days later, Asa was to be seen walking around with the kitten wrapped around his neck, purr-singing
to beat the band. "Friendly little guy, isn't he?" he grinned. The cat now weighs close to 14 pounds, but still
asserts his place, wrapped around Asa's neck.
The bond between those two is incredibly strong. Bubba sees me as an unwelcome competitor for Asa's attentions. He lies wedged against Hubby's side in the evening, watching TV, and growls at me if I try to move him to
get some attention of my own. Same story in the bedroom. Guess who sleeps in the middle?
The only time Bubba views me with less than disdain is when Asa is at work during the week. Then, on occasion, he will sidle
up to me and run his full body length along my leg, marking me as 'his person'. He will sing his particular purr and allow me
to stroke him and scratch his ears. If I am particularly lucky, he will chirrup, get that look, and with no further warning, catapult
himself to my chest, where I am expected to catch him and boost him to my shoulders so he can wrap himself around my
neck. But when Asa is around, he gives me that "who are you?" look and cuddles up to his best human buddy.

In memory of Baney. My friend, I think of you every
day and try to remember the lessons you taught me.
That the sun is life affirming and its warmth should
be enjoyed in abundance. Relax, everything I need
will come to me if I just patiently hang on the sofa
(or bed, or blanket, newspaper, plastic bag, whatever’s
handy, really). Kindly greet those I love – it makes us
all feel good and everyone likes to feel good. Snuggling
is the best thing ever. One can never get enough
snuggle time! Love with all my heart – as painful as it
can be, it is always worth it. These lessons I remember
daily but they are but a drop in the wide ocean of my
fond memories of you. No one will ever replace you in
my heart, no matter how fond I grow. You were always
my best friend, from the very beginning when we fell
in love thru a chain-link fence, until the very end
when cancer claimed your sweet self. Baney, you will
be forever a part of me, representing all that was ever
good in my life. I love you so much! RIP, sweet cheeks
