The site served as an agricultural settlement until the outbreak of the War of Independence, during which it withstood heavy bombing by the Egyptian army. It spans 50 dunam (~12.5 acres) and is home to some130 different species of birds, mammals and reptiles from Israel and around the world. The park was established with the support of the Pratt Foundation, and commemorates the soldiers of the ANZAC (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps), who fought in the battle of Be’er-Sheva in 1917, during WWI. The dramatic statue of an Australian soldier on his horse situated in the park, and brought over from Australia, represents the valiant ANZAC soldier. Built on a mountain top north of Be’er-Sheva, from the height of the monument, one has a panoramic view of the city of Be’er-Sheva, the Hebron mountains and Mount Negev.
