LFA EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW
CM01 Building Resilient Lawyers and Leaders
Law is different from many other professions
in specific ways that make it a challenging
environment for both lawyers and leaders
of law firms. These challenges, along with
certain lawyer personality traits, rapid
ongoing change in the profession, and high
stress and burnout have made resilience a
necessary skill set for long-term success and
well-being in the law. Research in this area
shows that higher levels of resilience lead
to less depression and anxiety, lower levels
of attrition and burnout, and increased
persistence, engagement and performance
– all valuable outcomes for both lawyers and
law firm leaders.
Learning Objectives:
We will identify the key components
of resilience and discuss how you can
incorporate specific resilience skills in your
own lives and firms.
During this program, you will learn to:

Understand why lawyers tend to be less
resilient than the general population
•
Build a culture of resilience at your firm,
which can lead to bottom line payoffs
•
Identify the core myths and facts about
resilience, along with the key building
blocks of growing resilience

Practice and apply at least three
research-based skills proven to increase
your own resilience and that of the
lawyers and personnel at your firm
•
Use at least four on-the-go resilience
skills when you’re short on time

Paula Davis-Laack,
JD, MAPP, is a former
practicing lawyer,
an internationallypublished writer,
speaker, media
contributor, and a stress and resilience
expert who has taught burnout prevention
and resilience workshops for thousands of
professionals around the world. Her articles
on stress, burnout prevention, resilience, and
thriving at work are prominently featured on
her blogs in The Huffington Post, Forbes, Fast
Company and Psychology Today. She also
writes a regular column called “On Balance”
for Wisconsin Lawyer magazine. Her latest
e-book is titled, Addicted to Busy: Your
Blueprint for Burnout Prevention. Her expertise
has been featured in a variety of media
outlets, including the Lawyerist, Law360.com,
various ABA webinars, and the Women’s Law
Journal.
She is the Founder and CEO of the Stress &
Resilience Institute, a training and consulting
firm devoted to helping companies and busy
professionals build their resilience to stress.
She is also a partner in Lawyer Strong, LLC,
which provides resilience training to law firms.

(Presentation and Panel Discussion)
It’s a buyers’ market for legal services in 2016
and law firms must utilize every tool available
to maintain and grow their client base,
resist incursions from competitors, improve
efficiency, and sustain margins. Legal Project
Management (LPM) can be a highly effective
tool to further all of these goals – if it is
deployed in the right way.
Firms that become adept in LPM learn to
craft fees and manage matters in ways that
deliver increased client satisfaction and lock
in client business. Internally, as firms practice
the discipline of LPM, they gain new insights
on matter costing and budgeting, make
better staffing choices, and improve overall
efficiency – making the work they do more
profitable.

Eric A. Seeger
Eric A. Seeger is a
Principal of Altman
Weil, Inc. He works
with law firms in
the areas of strategy
formulation and
execution, practice group planning and
training, merger search, and organizational
issues including administrative audits and
succession planning. Seeger directs Altman
Weil’s market research department. He
conducts client surveys and client interviews
for law firms and market research projects for
legal industry vendors. He is the co-author of
Altman Weil’s highly regarded annual industry
survey, Law Firms in Transition.
His prior experience includes positions as
Chief Operating Officer of a regional law
firm and Director of Strategic Planning and
Practice Group Management at an AmLaw
200 law firm. He has published more than
20 articles in legal industry publications,
including ABA Law Practice, Of Counsel,
Law Firm Partnership & Benefits Report and
Pennsylvania Lawyer. He has presented at a
host of law firm retreats, in-house programs,
national and regional conferences and board
rooms.
All education sessions at this conference,
except for Idea Exchanges, count for
the additional application requirements
for Functional Specialists and CLM
Recertification.
The LFA Retreat

Eligibility Requirements: Registration is
limited to only the principal administrator of a
law firm with 100 or more attorneys. Members
who are retiring and have identified their
successor, may bring that person to the Retreat
and should indicate it when registering.
ALA Regular and Associate Members may
register for the Large Firm Administrators
Retreat at the member rates noted.
Nonmember registration is restricted to
individuals who are not currently members
of ALA, but who do meet the eligibility
requirements for ALA membership. Learn more

CANCELATION POLICY
All cancelations must be made in writing and
submitted via email to registration@alanet.org.
Cancelations received on or before July 1,
2016 are subject to a $125 fee. No refunds
will be provided for cancelations received July
2, 2016 or after.
SUBSTITUTIONS
Substitution from the registrant’s
organization is permitted for a $125
administrative fee. The substitute’s
registration fee will be adjusted if a
nonmember replaces an ALA member.

access to the fitness and workout facility,
