The most people we’ve ever had at any 2nd Saturday reception. A record number of volunteers in the first quarter of tbis year. The ever popular jazz and poetry concert, inspired by the Animal House art. Record entries in the Animal House show. World class art in the current WASH members show. More to come. Where the Wild Things Are, Magnum Opus, Bold Ex, the Photography and Fabric shows. Gallery 3 enjoyed a beautiful face lift (Thanks David Hanlon, who paid for it, and Ed Cheney and the Facilities Committee, who did the work.) And we are solvent. Because our members stepped up and bought bricks (Thanks, Skip Lee) (and Dorothy Steed for Ars Gratia!), donated freely, and put money in the hat. May 6th is the Big Day of Giving in Sacramento, when all non-profits in the region will be participating and competing for matching funds. Please be open to our appeals on this special day. There is an atmosphere of excitement and gratitude at SFAC, fostered by our programs and workshops but primarily because our members and volunteers are in charge. You set the positive tone and encourage your Board and staff to set the high standard for our community art outreach. Stay tuned, the rest of the year will be fantastic. Sacramento Fine Arts Journal page 3 SFAC Photo Club Report At its March meeting, the Club hosted a presentation by Bill Miller, noted area bird photographer and recent juror for the SFAC’s Annual “Animal House” Exhibit. Bill’s topic focused on how judges score photographs in competitions. Bill’s tips were invaluable, not only in seeing photography the way a critic does, but also insights on how to hone your own skills in the photographic medium. As a reminder, the Photo Club has penciled in the following dates for our annual shows for both photography only and mixed media in conjunction with the SFAC: In the Style of the Masters: July Hallway Show: July and August Visions 2014: October 28 through November 15 Monthly Program Information For our April 24th meeting, the group will take lessons learned from the Bill Turner presentation, and use them to critique photo project(s) Photo Club members are working on. So, bring your shots in and get some constructive feed-back! It won’t hurt, I promise you! Our May meeting will focus on a special “Beta” presentation by Photo Club member Larry Klink on composition & lighting. More later. Check our Facebook page for more information. 2014 Monthly Program Schedule Reminder Monthly meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of every month, beginning at 7 pm. There is no meeting in December. SFAC Member Photo Exhibits Art League Of Lincoln Images from Club members Lucille van Ommering, Janel Berchielli, Craig Johnson, and Jeanne Snyder were exhibited in the League’s first photo exhibit in their wonderful and remodeled gallery in downtown Lincoln. Lodi Community Art Center 2014 Annual Spring Event at the Woodbridge Wineries by Robert Mondavi Several of our members were showcased in the historic winery on Woodbridge Road for the LCAC’s 54th annual fundraiser in April. Of the six awards for photography, SFAC members captured three of them. Our very own Barbara Maurizi garnered second place, while Michael Corlew and Lucille van Ommering each received an Honorable Mention. Over 180 artists in every medium had at least one, if not several pieces in this incredible show which is one of the largest in California. Crocker Art Auction Craig Johnson’s photograph “Tower Bridge” was accepted for the Crocker Art Auction. It will be displayed in Crocker Art Museum from May 22 until the auction on June 7. He also has another photograph, “Jelly”, in the Big Names Small Art auction at Crocker on May 22. PHOTO CLUB MEMBERSHIP FEES ARE PAST DUE! Don’t forget that annual membership renewal was due in January. The SFAC is not able to pro-rate your membership. So in order to gain the most benefit of full membership, it’s to your advantage to renew or sign up sooner rather than later. You can find an application within this newsletter. Remember, our ability to survive depends on your generous contributions. Please renew now! page 4 Northern California Arts, Inc. Members’ Newsletter May/June 2014 President’s Message Hi NCA! Happy Springtime! Where has this year gone? Seems like we were just planning the NCA Gala and now almost a 1/3 of 2014 is over! Are you inspired by the wonderful weather? Spring is beautiful and it promises so much to come. It's easy to look anywhere and be inspired to sketch and paint. I hope you are painting. The NCA membership show is right around the corner and soon followed by NCA-sponsored BoldEx International show. You'll want to get ready for both of these annual shows. Both prospectuses are on the SFAC/ NCA website and ready to print. Thank you to all the new members who attended the New Member Tea on Sunday, April 6th, and shared their art with all in attendance. A big Thank you to Joan McMurrary for hosting at her home and it was a very beautiful day and a nice time was had by all the artists who attended. Just a reminder that NCA has a Master Painter program with 4 levels to achieve the final step of Master Painter. Our members have been hard at work to earn the Master Painter status and we have acknowledged those working towards this goal at our monthly meetings. Keep up the good work! Each step earns the artist a certificate for that level. We invite you to read how to start your journey to Master Painter on the SFAC/NCA website where each level is explained in detail. The challenge is there for you to attain. Don't forget the next meeting on May 14. Our guest will be Professor Catherine Turril, Art Department Chairman who will be discussing the history of CSUS and NCA. Thought for the day: "Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine." Anthony J. D'Angelo Keep painting and be inspired! Sally Welcome New Members Welcome to NCA!! We are so pleased that you decided to join one of the oldest art clubs in California, celebrating 75 years of art and artists. Welcome to: Peggy Colombo, Orangevale; John Cartwright, Carmichael; Marie Ellen Crocket, Sacramento; Sandy Lindblad, Grass Valley; Kip Bridges, Sacramento; Patricia Rivard, Sacramento; Dennis Wilson, Sacramento; Fran Salvatore-Pope, Citrus Heights; Emilie Righetti, Auburn. How Can You Help Your NCA? It's Spring and the time of year when new growth is blooming everywhere we look. It's time to do something new and for you to think about NCA and where you can help us to grow. Shabby Chic by Judy Knott We invite you to join our NCA Board; currently we need a Secretary Chairman. The Board meets one week prior to the NCA general membership meeting and we discuss and decide all of the activities that NCA will be involved in the future and we plan the activities to present at the following meeting. Please help us. We need more members to become involved and help us to continue with great ideas and new energy. We need your help. Please contact any Board member at the next meeting or come to the Board meeting, first Wed. of May, at SFAC at 7 p.m. Hope to see you there! Artists’ News Judy Knott’s painting Shabby Chic won first place in oils in the 54th annual Lodi Spring show. Myra Steward’s painting Matchmaker won first place in mixed media. Barbara Leach has three paintings in the Show, and Katie Fleming has two paintings accepted. Art Sense from Gretchen If you express your art in only one medium you might consider trying a different one, such as acrylic or collage. Or you might try paper making. It will open entirely new possibilities and new visions of art to you. When I started to make paper it became my favorite, with unlimited ways of expressing myself. Give something new a try and enjoy its creative inspiration. Gretchen Programs May 14 USC Professor, Catherine Turrill will speak on the history of the SFAC. Catherine Turrill is a Professor of Art History at CSUS. A specialist in Italian Renaissance art, she was the creator and first coordinator of the CSU Summer Arts course The Art History of Florence (2009). Her current research is on Plautilla Nelli, a Dominican nun who was a well-known painter in Florence in the second half of the sixteenth century. June 11 Bob Miller will demonstrate A Bend in the River which pictures the Sacramento River near Orland. He has exhibited widely in Northern California in galleries and art fairs including the California State Fair. Bob painted a mural of Sacramento pioneers on the promenade connecting Old Sacramento to the K Street Mall. His whimsical drawings of Wind-in-the-Willows characters are a permanent part of the River Walk on the east side of the Sacramento River. Bob has served on the boards of the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento Discovery Museum, and was a founding member and president of the Art Directors and Artists Club of Sacramento. Workshop Opportunity David Lobenberg is offering a mixed media workshop, CA Vibe Portraiture, May 24 - 26 from 9:30 - 4:30. The cost is $450. Contact Pam Rhodes for further information. Artist Standing Congratulations to Carol Barnes, Sally Durante, Maliheh Bartolomeo, and John Reed on their achievements. Odd Months, Days 1:30 P.M. Even Months: Evenings 7 P.M. From Our President Patty Larsen — ON MY MIND . . . Every two months when the WASH newsletter deadline rolls around I go into panic mode. What am I going to write about this month? Does it really matter since I never know whether anyone reads this thing? Do you? Anyway, this month I’m just going to list what’s on my mind. . .here goes. I am so grateful and proud of our WASH Board members. They are the real reason our association is doing so well: 108 members already this year; a terrific member show; outstanding and interesting artist presenters/demonstrators for our monthly meetings; and two great workshops nearly full or with waiting lists. The Board is not a group to rest on its laurels, however. We recently dedicated a full afternoon to brainstorming plans for making WASH even better. While we’re still going through that process, I can assure you that good results are on the horizon. One of our biggest concerns is how to share the fun of being both an artist and a fully participating WASH member. If we want to do more, then we need more worker bees. One decision we have made is to shift our Scholarship focus from sponsoring an annual High School Watercolor Show to providing an actual scholarship to a promising art student. Four members have volunteered for the committee to develop criteria and means to make this happen. The members are Barbara Killeen, Joyce Wilson, Phyllis Barrette, and Jo Kopp. We will continue to hold our monthly raffles as that will continue to be a major source of funding for the annual award. A second decision made recently by the Board is to raise our annual membership fee from $20 to $25, beginning with 2015 membership renewals. Our Constitution and Bylaws state that an increase must be approved by the membership, so we will vote on the increase at our May meeting. The fee has not been increased for years, maybe not since 1978. Obviously if we want to maintain our current level of activity or do more, additional resources are needed. In all of our conversations we have had about how to make WASH even better, Board members’ focus has been on what our members want, need, dislike, etc. In other words, we want to hear from you. We are exploring various ways of doing this — more about that later. For now, talk to us, send us an email, give us a call. Our names, phone numbers, and email addresses are listed in this newsletter. And, finally but certainly not least, thank you so much for all you do to make WASH an exciting place to belong. —Patty Larsen Welcome New Members! NOT IN THE MOOD? Some artists feel they have to be “in the mood” to paint. However, if you were making your living from your art, waiting until you were in the mood could be very expensive! Actually, forcing yourself to paint regardless of how you feel can be very rewarding. Some of the best work I’ve done was when I was trying to meet a deadline when I would rather have been reading or watching TV! Does that blank sheet of watercolor paper scare you? Make a light pencil mark or drop some paint on the paper and go from there. Life doesn’t give us a whole lot of “in the mood” times, and you’ll find your mood changing drastically once you get started. Painting each day, or for several days each week, will give you such a flood of inspiration that you might find yourself working so hard and long that your shoes grow to your feet like Michelangelo's! Well, maybe not. But grab that brush and go for it! —Ann Bissett-Clark Barbara Leach had three paintings in the Lodi spring show at the winery in April. Linda Abbott Trapp, Brad Brooks, John Cartwright, Janet Groza, Michael Mitchell. Claudia Peterson, Barbara Taylor, Yu Yin Teng, Yevgenia Watts, and Carolyn Woodhouse. Introduce yourself to these new members and any visitors to our meetings. Sometimes it’s a little daunting to be a first-timer and not know anyone!! Let’s talk volunteering! Non-profit organizations such as WASH have no paid officers, so everything is done by those who give unstintingly of their talents and abilities. Unfortunately, many members have no desire to help in any capacity, and that could be the cause of our beloved group being unable to continue. There are artists all over the world who would be more than happy to volunteer if they had an organization like ours to help us progress. Please offer your talents and abilities to further our organization’s great gift to all of you. You won’t be sorry! 2014 Demo Artists May 12 1:30 pm JUAN PENA Plein air Techniques June 9 7:00 pm PATRICIA OSBORNE Watercolor drama using the white of your paper No meetings in July and August Sept. 8 1:30 pm DIANE PARGAMENT Oct. 13 7:00 pm HOWARD LUKE LUCAS An approach to plein air watercolor. Paintings of the Month March: Teresa Steinbach-Garcia April: Info not available due to deadline of newsletter BE SURE TO BRING A PAINTING FOR PAINTING OF THE MONTH! Juan Pena May 12, 2014 Juan Pena began plein air watercolor painting in 1959, while studying with California renowned watercolorist, Vernon Nye, in the Napa Valley wine country where “our California weather and light are conducive to painting outdoors.” His favorite subjects include landscapes, trees, rocks, rivers, seascapes, and people. He paints from life, on location for the most part, and from his imagination. His paintings have been published in instructional books and art magazines and are in an exhibition touring the United States. Juan currently lives in the Sierra foothills of California with his wife Kay and has a studio in downtown Auburn. Patricia Osborne June 9, 2014 Patricia is a national award-winning artist who has received wide acclaim for her watercolor and mixed media work in both abstract and impressionistic form. She brings excitement to simple landscapes, flower subjects, as well as many others. She demonstrates a wonderful balance between spontaneity and structure. Her work can be seen in many art books, including “ArtisticTouch 4,” featuring 120 of the best artists in the U.S. She is also an active member of the American Watercolor Society as well as several others and has been teaching at Mendocino Art Center for 18 years. "AwashWithColor 2014" Thank you Teresa, Tim, Patty (and husband), Ann, David, Carla, Sue, Maura, Joyce, Rose, Ralph, Margaret, Phyllis, Charlotte, Mary and Sandi: Thank you to each of you who helped with hanging "Awash With Color 2014" and for helping man (woman) the stations for receiving on March 21 and 22. It was delightful to have the opportunity to work with old friends but especially to become more acquainted with new faces. The pleasures of volunteering and working together on a big project such as this show bring the fulfillment of a job well done. The WASH membership show, which ran from April 1 -19, was a tribute to the many talented and accomplished artists of our club. It was a beautiful show, with 122 water media pieces using a wide range of aqueous treatments and surfaces, some with traditional approaches and some obviously stretching to find a new way to portray a subject. It was judged by Jeannie Vodden. Best of Show went to Robert Bowden for “Maria’s Kitchen.” Awards of Excellence went to Tony Rogone for “Koi” and Teresa Steinbach-Garcia for “Spanish Gentleman.” Awards of Merit went to Yuko Carson, “Lunch at Park,” Cathy Hackett, GO WITH THE FLOW WASH 2014 OPEN SHOW CALL FOR ARTISTS — SEPTEMBER 2-27 Receiving Friday August 22, 2-5pm and Saturday August 23, 11am-3pm ARTIST RECEPTION AND AWARDS PRESENTATION Second Saturday, September 13, 5:30-8:30pm ENTRY FEES—$25 per entry or $40 for 3 entries JUROR: CHRIS MESSER Any questions, contact Show Chair Rebecca Jaggars at 916-369-2031 or email jaggers6@yahoo.com “Misty Flowers,” Patty Larsen, “Bryce Horizon,” and Yevgenia Watts, “Curiouser and Curiouser.” The Donald and Dorothy Steed Award went to Mary Gernat Taylor for “Just Around the Bend.” Honorable Mentions went to Linda Abbott Trapp, Phyllis Eymann, Karen Keys, Barbara Killeen, David Peterson, Timothy Sloan, Yu Yin Teng and Kandi Thompson.
