falls on Thursday, the 27th. I hope all of you have a
wonderful day with family and friends. We have a lot
to be thankful for in America. Say a special prayer for
our military guys and gals all over the world standing
a post for us.
To be sure, the day after Thanksgiving is “Black
Friday”. I know I’ll be in my man cave watching football, but watch out for the Grissom girls at Walmart
and Target.
This year is also an election year and I hope you all
take the opportunity to exercise the privilege of voting.
It’s not a right - it’s a privilege. Let’s hope we can keep
it that way. So please go to the polls November 4th.

The Inaugural “Battle of the Best” is just around
the corner. I know the Chamber will once again score
a “touchdown.” Things are shaping up for this to be a
real event for the fall on the Emerald Coast. The date
is November 1st at the Okaloosa County Fairgrounds.
The gates open at 7:00 am and will go into the night

with all manner of games, food and music. We’re still
accepting entries for the Heroes vs. Villains 5K, teams
for the Field Day Sports Competitions, and players for
the FIRST-EVER Disc Golf Tournament at the FWB
Golf Club. So call the Chamber if you’d like to enter.
Teams consist of 10 to 14 members, but 4 of the team
members have to be female. There’s also a 18 hole
Frisbee Disc Golf tournament across the street at the
FWN Golf Club. Later the Kings of Hollywood will
take the stage for tributes to Poison, Motley Crue and
Guns ‘n Roses. Melissa Matern from the Boardwalk
(Saltwater Restaurants’) will provide plenty of good
food and all the cold beverages you could ask for.

Ah, the fun filled life of an elected official!
On Thursday, November 6, 2014

all of our local elected officials from the
Greater Fort Walton Beach Area. And

If you have not had the pleasure to
serve your community in an elected capacity, might I recommend that you add this to your list right now. What an amazingly
different perspective you have of your own town and the people
in it. I had the pleasure of running for City of Destin Mayor in
2002 and served as City of Destin City Councilmember from
2004-2008. One term was enough—I can cross it off my list.
It is amazing how one minute you want to simply serve
your community and the next you are branded a politician with
some ulterior motive. The role of a locally elected municipal
leader is not one for the faint of heart—or for those who are
constantly looking for positive reinforcement. It is a thankless
job that for most is strictly volunteer, requires long hours of
studying EVERYTHING needed to run a city! Building codes,
noise ordinances, businesses hours, sign heights—trust me on
this—EVERYTHING. And no one is ever pleased with your
decisions.
And this is if you win the election—have you had the occasion to stand on the side of the road and wave to passing cars
lately? That’s another fun one.
But on the other hand, it is the most valuable lesson you
might ever experience. So do me a favor―the next time you see
someone who is devoting their time to serve YOUR community,
please thank them for their efforts.
And if you want to do that all at once to as many elected officials as we can gather, please join us on Thursday, November 6
at Fudpuckers on the Island.

Young Entrepreneurs Academy Accepting Applications for Next Session
“The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is one of the best opportunities to watch
young entrepreneurs from our local high schools develop and create a business from the
ground up. Add in our local mentors from the business community, and you get to see what
makes a successful community.” says YEA instructor Barbara Britt, retired teacher from
Okaloosa County school system (37 years) and now a certified John C. Maxwell Motivational
Speaker/Business Trainer/Professional Coach.
The Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, working with the Costa Leadership
Institute of Northwest Florida State College, is pleased to offer our second annual Young
Entrepreneurs Academy to Okaloosa County high school students, with the sponsorship of the
Doolittle Institute.
This unique program in entrepreneurial education will be offered to all Okaloosa County
High school students in grades 9 through 12. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!),
in its 2nd year in the Okaloosa County Schools and its 10th year nationwide, is an intensive
five-month program that teaches high school students how to start and run their own REAL
businesses and or nonprofit organization. Students are guided through each step of starting an
enterprise, from brainstorming the idea to pitching their business plan to investors. Classroom
learning is anchored by real-world applications, such as submitting DBAs to the County
Clerk’s Office, opening bank accounts, filing tax returns, and earning real profits at a trade
show.
“After last year’s very successful rollout of the program we are even more excited this
year because of the involvement with the Costa Leadership Institute of Northwest Florida
State College: “We are pleased to be participating in the YEA program this year and to offer
the youth of our community this educational opportunity. Entrepreneurship is a valuable tool
for students to learn and instill creativity and individualism,” stated Julie Cotton, Director,
Professional and Continuing Education at Northwest Florida State College. “The course is
offered in a learning environment that will cultivate their ideas and help them achieve success.
Also, this is a great opportunity for the community to support these students and we are happy
to be a part of that endeavor.”
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is accepting student nominations for the Class of 2015
until November 7, 2014. There is no cost to apply, yet a tuition fee of $295 is applicable for
all accepted students. Scholarships are available.
“Most of the students who have participated in past academies have not had an idea for
a business or social plan before coming to the class—they just knew that they wanted to do
‘something’. The academy might also be very beneficial for a music or art student who has
career goals to market their talents down the road.’ Last year’s businesses created included:
pencil case invention (now trademarked!); videography; jewelry, car detailing; infant car
safety; beach concierge; cupcakes; tutorial services; and theatre training.
YEA! is sponsored by the Doolittle Institute, and by the Greater Fort Walton Beach
Chamber of Commerce and the Costa Leadership Institute of Northwest Florida State College,
with additional support from the Okaloosa County School District and the Destin Area
Chamber of Commerce.
Classes will be held on the Northwest Florida State College Niceville campus every
Monday from 4:30 to 7:30pm, beginning January, 2015 and ending in May 2015. Students

the Emerald Coast” for Sixth Consecutive Year

Company/Service Firm” on the Emerald Coast for the
sixth year in a row by Emerald Coast magazine readers.
In addition, the company was also recognized as “Best

Each year, readers of Emerald Coast magazine cast
votes for their favorite Northwest Florida businesses for
the “Best of the Emerald Coast” awards. The results of
this year’s voting were recently published in the magazine’s October/November issue.

The Best of the Emerald Coast competition asks
community members to name the businesses they feel

display at an event held on Saturday, October 25 at Grand
Boulevard, located at 185 Grand Boulevard in Miramar
Beach, Fla. The public is invited for an evening of food,
fun, fashion and entertainment, with proceeds from ticket
sales benefitting the Junior League of the Emerald Coast.

He decided to plan, organize, promote, and execute
a non-motorized poker run along the sound behind his
neighborhood. He sought help from his parents, grandparents and the Parish Point Kayak club and then got to
work seeking sponsors, participants, and extra donations
from those who could not participate. His goal, besides
getting a passing grade, was to be able to donate $250 to
Horizons. He exceeded his goal, and showed up on the
presentation day with a check for $525.
“I am floored by this young man’s efforts” said Mike
Anderson, Mayor of Fort Walton Beach. “It’s bright and
compassionate youth like Kyle who continue to inspire
me and remind me why Fort Walton Beach was named as
one of the happiest places to live.”
Anderson was on hand for the check presentation,
along with Horizons Board member and local attorney
Lisa Jo Spencer, and members of Kyle’s family.
Horizons is an affiliated chapter of The Arc, a nonprofit organization that provides programs and services
for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities
in Okaloosa, Walton and South Santa Rosa Counties.

Children in Crisis raised over $40,000 to provide homes
to local foster children. The funds will be used to help
feed, clothe and care for the at-risk children at the CIC
Children’s Home.
The tournament was held at Kelly Plantation and
golfers from all around the panhandle came to enjoy the
awesome event. The day began with a barbeque lunch
followed by the Florida Scramble shot-gun start. There
was also a pre-registration party the night before hosted by
Tommy Bahama Tropical Cafe and the Tommy Bahama
Sandestin Retail Store donated a shirt valued at $135 to
each golfer. The tournament culminated with over 140

Tax Collector’s Office
saved county motorists
over $258,000 when they
removed the motor vehicle registration’s 2-year
renewal option earlier this
year.
On April 4, 2014,
Governor Rick Scott signed a bill that would lower the
cost of most vehicle registrations by up to $25.00 per
year. While this was great news, it would not go into
effect until September 1st. This prompted Okaloosa
County Tax Collector Ben Anderson to be the first Tax
Collector to remove the biennial (2-year Renewal) option
from vehicle renewals through August in an effort to
prevent motorists from electing the 2nd year option at the
higher rate. During those months over 11,500 registrations, which historically would have been renewed for 2
years, were saved the extra expense for the second year
registration.
Anderson says, “In Okaloosa County last year, 23,400
vehicles had biennial registrations. With the new, lower
rate, there is a tangible savings, so we have reinstated the
2-year renewal option. Now I am encouraging all motorists to take advantage of the biennial option. If owners
choose to register their vehicle(s) for two years they will
certainly save time and money.” Anderson says, “It is our
responsibility to be good stewards with resources and
information. This is just another example of your Tax
Collector’s Office working hard to save you money.”

D’Andrea’s culinary journey began as an Italian kid in
the Bronx, NY where he says “to us food was love.” The
journey has taken him to places like Piemonte, Italy and
the aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln with stops all
across the USA including five years at Gaylord Opryland
Resort and Convention Center. He says “one of his greatest honors” is receiving three James Beard invitations to
cook at the townhouse in New York City.

enthusiasm, excitement, and culinary experience to all
Wind Creek Hospitality guests.

Most recently she worked as Director of Sales for Visit
Cheyenne in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Shantelle has worked
in nearly every aspect of the industry as a Hotel Sales
Manager, CVB Director of Sales, Meeting Planner,
Technology Consultant, Facilitator and Speaker.
In January 2012, she was awarded the distinguished, industry-recognized CMP (Certified Meeting
Professional) through the Convention Industry Council.
And in February 2013, she received the Award of
Dedication for Outstanding Service from the Professional

It Pays To Be A Chamber Member !!!
To assist area Chamber members with the growing cost of insurance, the Fort
Walton Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has joined 6 other Northwest Florida
Chambers in offering a Workers’ Compensation program to eligible Chamber
members. By partnering with these other Chambers, our local Chamber offers
the buying power of a larger organization and a quality Workers’ Compensation
insurance program.
Workers’ Compensation rates and benefits are determined by the State and are
the same with all WC carriers. The premiums are based on job classification and
estimated payroll. This Chamber program is provided by McMahon & Hadder
Insurance through OptaComp.
The premiums and claims for this Chamber program will be combined to
determine qualification for dividend, which is a return of premiums. Dividends are
declared based on the overall profit of the participating members and will be paid
as a percentage of the individual member’s audited premium. This dividend can
be as much as 24.8% of the individual participating member’s annual WC premium.
There are also certain credits and individual rating experience modifications ratings
that may apply.
This year’s dividends for the participating Fort Walton Beach Chamber of
Commerce businesses total $15,454.
