Elk Grove Village will host the seventh annual Alexian

race, a children’s Big Wheel race, and the Village Trustees’

alone, contre la montre, or against the watch. For our Time Trial, the distance is 7.3 km or 4.5 miles.
Starting times are at equal intervals, usually one or two minutes apart. Based on previous races, the
highest ranked cyclist competes last, giving him the advantage of knowing what time is needed to win.
In time trials, drafting is not permitted if more than one person is on the course. Drafting occurs
by riding closely behind another rider, which creates a slipstream or air pocket. At a time trial race,
spectators will see cyclists wearing lightweight clothing and helmets, and using aerodynamic bicycles
and other specialized equipment.
Chicago Blackhawks - Stage II Road Race - For this portion of the race, all riders will begin the
race simultaneously. The length of road races can vary from a couple kilometers to upwards of 200
kilometers. For our Road Race, the distance is 160 km/99 miles and 10 laps. This race will begin at the

and follow the same route. Riders are permitted to draft and even touch other cyclists’ bikes. Teams form

take over and pass their competitors.
For the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove, a circuit race is used for the regular stage. A circuit is a
race held on a course that riders continually lap. The circuit race is shorter in duration than the Stage
II Road Race, but time is countered with higher rates of speed and intensity during these races. This
year’s circuit race will be 115 km or 72 miles and will feature a brand new course. The circuit race will
run along Elk Grove Boulevard, Tonne Road, Reverend Morrison Boulevard/J.F. Kennedy Boulevard,
Brantwood Avenue, and Penrith Avenue.

Friday night, following the AXA Equitable Pro Men’s Time Trial, 7th Heaven will
take to the stage. 7th Heaven is arguably Chicago’s hardest-working rock bands,
playing over 250 days a year! Their energic showmanship wows audiences and has
earned them a huge fan base for both their classic pop/rock covers and originals.
Rod Tuffcurls & The Bench Press will kick off the Saturday night Block Party
following the Chicago Blackhawks Pro Men’s Road Race. Calling themselves a “sodium rich” cover band that plays
fun songs to which everyone can dance to and sing along with, Rod Tuffcurls plays music from a wildly eclectic mix
of songs, from the Beatles and Madonna to Les Miserables. Harmonic, zany, and
pure musical fun are good ways to characterize this youthful Chicago pop/rock

In addition to great music and entertainment from 7th Heaven and Rod Tuffcurls,
there will be food and beverages available at reasonable prices. A Budweiser beer

Ridge Avenue.

Carswell Avenue, Clearmont Drive, Maple Lane, Love Street, Laurel Street, Ridge Avenue, Charing Cross, Delphia Avenue,
Bianco Drive, Crest Avenue and Verde Lane will be closed for 30 minutes per hour, 10 minutes at a time, to allow the racers to
complete the Stage II Road Race (see page 4).
Sunday, August 5 – Beginning at 7:00 a.m., we will close Elk Grove Boulevard (from Rev. Morrison Boulevard to Tonne
Road) and Maple Lane (from Victoria Lane to Love Street) for the morning criterium races. In the afternoon, the Pro Men’s
and Women’s teams will ride a Circuit course that will follow the Time Trial course with the addition of a looped section
which will require the closures of Rev. Morrison Boulevard, J.F. Kennedy Boulevard, Penrith Avenue, and Brantwood
Avenue. Closures will begin at 12:45 p.m. and continue until approximately 6:30 p.m.
During the three days of racing, residents will notice many changes regarding how parking is enforced in the
area near the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove race course. We ask that all residents located on and near the
course be patient and courteous during this time. Beginning the day of the race, all vehicles must be removed
from Elk Grove Boulevard and Tonne Road. If your vehicles are not moved off the roadway, they will be towed.
Those with driveway access, who do not move their vehicles prior to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, or 7:00 a.m. on Saturday
and Sunday, will not have access to their vehicles until after the races finish. Once the course is closed off, there
will be absolutely no vehicular traffic along the designated race course. On street parking restrictions on adjacent
streets to the race routes will be waived during the duration of the weekend. Should you need special assistance,
please contact the Police Department at (847) 357-4108. Parking is also available at Queen of the Rosary.

VILLAGE TRUSTEES’ - YARD SIGN CHALLENGE
The Elk Grove Village Trustees are once again sponsoring a yard sign challenge
for the 2012 Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove. Residents along the Chicago
Blackhawks Pro-Men’s Road Race route are encouraged to design and create
welcome signs to cheer on the riders. If you do not live along the route, you
can place your sign along the ComEd right-of-way on Tonne Road. Please
put your name, address and apartment number (if applicable) on your sign
in order for each sign to be appropriately judged. On Saturday, August 4, the
Village Trustees will ride along the Road Race route and select the top six (6)
“Welcome to the Tour of Elk Grove” bike race signs.
The yard sign challenge offers a great opportunity for residents of Elk Grove
Village to showcase their community spirit, play an active role in supporting the Village, and cheer on the cyclists.
Participants displayed many creative signs last year and this year looks to be even better. For the safety of the riders,
Elk Grove Village will not allow any signs to hang over the street.
Signs must be placed in a yard or on a driveway by 12:00 p.m. There are no size or material stipulations. For more

Mayor’s Charity Time Trial
On Friday, August 3, at 3:30 p.m., amateur riders can take off from the same start ramp
and race the same course as the pros just a short while before the actual pros race. This is
your chance to compare your time against the world’s top cyclists on a 4.5 mile time trial
course. The professional Men’s and Women’s Time Trial starts at 4:30 p.m., immediately
following the Charity Time Trial.

to miles.
1 km = 0.62 miles
10 km = 6.21 miles
30 km = 18.64 miles
60 km = 37.28 miles
80 km = 49.71 miles

BE A SMART SPECTATOR
Professional cyclists can reach speeds upwards of 40 miles per hour. Please keep an eye on young children as this event moves
much quicker than the average parade. The fastest riders will be escorted by a pace car which will alert spectators that the
riders are coming. Support vehicles will follow their team with back up bikes and equipment for the riders. In cycling, it is

race course. Spectators should not sit on the curb to view a cycling race. Cyclists ride very close to the curb, when in packs,
and make very sharp turns. Stand back on corners to allow the cyclists adequate room to make safe turns. Spectators at cycling
events are much louder than the cyclists themselves. The Village encourages families to cheer on the riders and have a good
time. However, safety for both the cyclists and the spectators is paramount.
