Maintaining adequate levels of each factor is critical for vigorous turf. Soil conditions strongly influence all of these except sunlight. Water and nutrients for overall plant growth, and oxygen for healthy root function are all taken up by plants from the soil. Carbon dioxide which is produced in root respiration accumulates in the soil and must be allowed to escape to the atmosphere. A well-designed aerification program is critical in maintaining proper water and air movement within the soil. Soil management is as important to overall turf conditions as managing the turf itself. Maintaining ideal soil conditions poses a unique set of challenges. First, altered soils (such as high sand content putting greens) often require consistent attention. Second, grass is a perennial crop which makes it difficult to access the soil without a temporary reduction in turf quality. Third, soil in high-traffic areas is prone to compaction which inhibits gas exchange, reduces rooting and restricts drainage. Fortunately, all of these challenges can be addressed through a proper aerification and top dressing program. 1 TITAN Needle ® The Titan Needle tine provides the smallest footprint of any Titan tine while creating an environment for efficient gas exchange and water infiltration. This narrow tine is the ideal selection in turf requiring frequent aerification, especially during the warmer months. Key Advantages: Improve gas exchange, minimize turf damage and downtime and increase surface drainage. Sizes Available Mount: Needle tine head required Length: 5", 6.43" (127mm, 163mm) OD: 3/16", 5/16" (5mm, 8mm) 18 8/24/09 4:38 PM Page 3 Soil Management Solid Tines 18.5 X 8 Spreads:Layout 1 A carefully executed aerification program will control the accumulation of thatch and organic matter in the root zone, improve gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere, improve water dynamics including surface infiltration and internal drainage, and promote deep, dense rooting for a firm, consistent turf. TITAN Slicing ® The Titan Slicing tine provides a unique combination of several characteristics. Titan Slicing offers aggressive soil aeration for increased gas exchange and water infiltration while strictly limiting the risk of turf damage. This tine is also an excellent choice to promote root growth. Sizes Available Mount: 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8" (13mm, 16mm, 19mm, 22mm) Length: 5" - 6 1/2" (127mm - 165mm) Key Advantages: Improve gas exchange, promote root growth, minimize turf damage and downtime and increase surface drainage. At the other extreme, soils with high sand content are dominated by “macro-pores” and are typically plagued by low moisture and nutrient retention. High sand content soils under turf also sustain lower levels of microbial decomposition which can lead to excessive organic matter build-up from dead root tissue which can limit water and air movement. Well designed aerification and topdressing programs can alleviate all of these conditions. Heavy Soils Light Soils “Heavy” or “fine textured” soils have a high clay content with micro-pores and are prone to poor aeration. “Light” or “coarse textured” soils have a high sand content with macro-pores and are well aerated. OD: 1/2", 3/4" (13mm, 19mm) 17 The relative proportions of sand, silt and clay. The key to proper soil aerification is creating an environment ideal for air and water movement. Water and air in soils work hand-in-hand. Proper pore space and size let air and water move freely between plant roots and the environment for vigorous growth. Soils with high clay content are dominated by “micro-pores” and are prone to poor aeration when subjected to compaction forces. Heavy clay soils as a result can restrict the movement of air, water and nutrients through the root zone. Understanding your soil’s composition is paramount to developing a beneficial soil management program. 2 18.5 X 8 Spreads:Layout 1 8/24/09 4:38 PM Page 4 Soil Management Solid Tines Methods of Aerification Core and solid tine aerification are the two most commonly practiced methods of aerification. Each method offers a unique set of benefits when used in a comprehensive aerification program. Determining which method to use is dependant on the aerification objective, and is dependent in part on the stage of the turf plants’ annual growth cycle. Core aerification is recommended for periods of vigorous growth in order to allow for proper recovery. Coring is particularly effective in relieving compaction, improving gas exchange and drainage, managing thatch and controlling organic build-up in the root zone. Solid tine aerification is most effective for increasing gas exchange and drainage. As a result, it is frequently used during periods of high temperature stress. Solid tining can be done all season since it damages turf less. 3 Both core and solid tine aerification can lead to a “cultivation pan” of compacted soil below aerification depth which may restrict drainage and gas exchange. Deep tine aerification is an effective way to penetrate this cultivation pan. Deep tine aerification fractures the soil and creates channels through the root zone allowing oxygen, water and nutrients to penetrate deeper into the soil profile. TITAN Cross ® The unique design of the Titan Cross tine allows it to expose almost double the soil surface area to the environment compared to a similarly sized Solid Round tine. The increased surface area allow for increased gas exchange with minimal disturbance to the turf surface. Cross tines are an excellent choice for mid-season aeration and Titan Cross Max tines features a carbide tip for extended wear. Key Advantages: Improve gas exchange, minimize turf damage and downtime and increase surface drainage. Sizes Available Mount: 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8" (10mm, 13mm, 16mm, 19mm, 22mm) Length: 4 1/2" - 5 1/2" (114mm - 140mm) OD: 3/8", 7/8" (10mm, 22mm) 16 8/24/09 4:39 PM Page 5 Soil Management Solid Tines 18.5 X 8 Spreads:Layout 1 TITAN Solid Round ® The Titan Solid Round tine opens turf allowing efficient gas exchange and water infiltration. The tines are manufactured with a durable alloy steel and heat treated, extending its longevity. Titan Solid Round tines feature a 1/16" flat tip for handling comfort during installation. Sizes Available Mount: 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8" (10mm, 13mm, 16mm, 19mm, 22mm) Key Advantages: Improve gas exchange, minimize turf damage and downtime and increase surface drainage. Regardless of aerification type, most of a tine’s wear occurs at the tip, where the most interaction with the turf occurs. All Titan Tines are made with a special heat-treating process ensuring proper hardness for long life and superior performance. Titan Max tines feature a durable carbide tip that helps your tines last significantly longer. The tips are manufactured with a special tungsten blend and carefully brazed to the tine. Titan Max tines are strongly recommended for use on homogenous soil conditions; the drastically increased hardened tip can fracture from impact with rocks beneath the turf in heterogeneous soil conditions. Core aerification is recommended for actively growing root systems in order to allow for proper recovery.
