Did you know?
Helpful Facts About Energy-Saving Products
Choosing the right lamp can help you save energy dollars. Deciding between LED, halogen or compact fluorescent lamps
can make more sense when you understand your options. Below are some facts about lighting that can help you make
the right choice.
Commercial industries, such as stores, schools and businesses, use about 38% of their electricity for lighting. In the
average home, up to 25% of the electric bill is for lighting. Most of this light is produced by inefficient incandescent
lamps. By choosing to use energy-efficient lamps, monthly electric bills can be significantly reduced. In addition, using
more energy-efficient products greatly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants released into
the atmosphere, which is beneficial for our environment.
Higher wattage incandescent lamps are not necessarily
brighter than their energy-efficient counterparts. There are
many energy- efficient lighting options that produce light
output, quality and performance similar to incandescent
lamps. Galux Eco- Halogen lamps are an excellent energyefficient alternative to traditional incandescent lamps
because they use less energy, provide excellent color and
they are dimmable.
Consumers are used to traditional incandescent and
halogen lamps that come in a standard “warm white” color.
Galux CFLs are available in a wide range of Kelvin temperatures including “Warm White” 2700K, “Bright White”
3500K and “Daylight” 6500K. Today’s energy-saving
compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are available in a variety
of color temperatures, shapes and styles providing
consumers with many lighting options to complement their
décor..
Lighting technologies continue to evolve creating more
application options and improving light quality. Galux
provides state of the art LED lighting technology that saves
up to 90% in energy costs compared to similar incandescent lamps. In addition to their energy saving features,
these lamps are fully recyclable and do not contain mercury
or other hazardous materials. Our LED lamps light instantly.
06
While energy-efficient lamps are more expensive to
purchase than standard lamps, over time using more
efficient lighting can save you considerable money. Traditional incandescent lamps burn an enormous amount of
electricity and they don’t last very long.
A standard 60 watt incandescent lamp uses significantly
more energy, typically lasts only 1,000 hours and costs
about $7.00 annually to operate. An equivalent, energyefficient Eco-Halogen, 42 watt, standard lamp will also
last 1,000 hours but only costs around $5.00 to operate.
An even more efficient 13 watt compact fluorescent
lamp (a 60W incandescent equivalent) costs $1.60 to
operate and will last between 6,000 and 10,000 hours.
An 8 watt LED (a 60W incandescent equivalent) will cost
only $.96 to operate and will last over 30,000 hours.
With so many energy-efficient lighting options, you can
choose the best light for your application while saving
time and money.

LED
What Are LEDs
How do LEDs work?
An LED is an light emitting diode. Its light is produced
by an electrical current passing through a semi conductive material, so it does not require a filament like an
incandescent bulb.
LEDs produce light in a very unique way; they produce
light via a process called electro-luminescence, a
rather complex process that starts by turning a semi
conductor material into a conducting material. A
semiconductor with extra electrons is called N-type
(negative) material, since it has extra negativelycharged electrons. In N-type material, free electrons
can move from a negatively-charged area to a
positively charged area.
A semiconductor with extra holes is called P-type
(positive) material since it has extra positively-charged
gaps called holes. When excited with current the
negative electron leaves its atom and the P-type
material’s positive attraction draws the free negative
electron into its hole, and the hole also moves toward
the electron, so on and so forth. As an electron travels
to a hole, it carries energy, but in order to fit into the
hole it must release any extra energy, and when it
does, the extra energy is released in the form of
light. When we maintain a steady flow of electrical
current to the diode, it continues
the process of allowing electrons to flow from the
negative charged material and fall into the positive
charged holes which maintains a steady stream of light
out of the LED.
LEDs have advanced at remarkable rates to enable an
entirely new category of lighting that will bring sense
and simplicity to our everyday lighting. LED lighting is
highly efficient, long lasting, environmentally friendly
and inherently controllable - enabling both new and
traditional applications of light. Already LED based
solutions illuminate famous buildings, bridges, retail
shops, television studios, theatre stages, hotels,
casinos, hospitals, restaurants and celebrity-filled
nightclubs around the world.
Whatʼs so different?
LEDs consume less electric power. An LED bulb utilizes
around 10 watts of energy that is confirmed to be 10
times less energy consuming than an incandescent
bulb, which utilizes
up to 100 watts of electricity. The lengthy hours of
usage and energy-saving functions of LEDs will
definitely support you
to save more when compared with continually buying
other inexpensive light bulbs that have shorter life
span and have no energy-saving functions.
Durability is another feature of LED lighting. They don’t
have glass tubes that may break and trigger injury. They
are made of materials that do not generate toxic
chemicals like that of incandescent and also fluorescent bulbs. Lastly, LED lights generate pure light which
has no flicker and causes no glare.
Sustainability and LED
solutions
Sustainability and respect for the environment are core
values of Galux. With LED based solutions, we take a
major step forward in achieving both aims. When
considering the sustainability of LEDs, the first aspect
that generally springs to mind is low energy use.Apart
from this, there are plenty of other benefits, including
waste reduction, recyclability, efficient use of materials
and resources and the effect on buildings and design
practices.

The Basics of LED Technology
Efficiency and efficacy
Directionality
The “efficacy” of a lighting fixture is usually expressed
as
the amount of light (in lumens) produced by a certain
amount of electricity (in watts). Lighting fixture
“efficiency” is the ratio of the total lumens exiting the
fixture to the total lumens produced by the light
source. Efficiency is also used to discuss the broader
concept of using resources efficiently.
LEDs are directional sources.Traditional light sources
(e.g. the incandescent bulb) emit light in all directions.
In order to collect light and direct it onto the surface
you are trying to illuminate, you must use lenses and
reflectors, which absorb light and reduce the total
output of the fixture.
What to remember:
It is important to note that the efficacy of the LEDs
themselves is always greater than the efficacy of the
LED fixture. This is caused by many factors including
losses as light bounces off reflectors and passes
through lenses. Make sure when specifying a light
fixture that you are looking at the appropriate fixture
data versus the LED source data.
What to remember:
Because an LED source is already emitting the majority
of light in a defined direction, it requires significantly
less beam shaping optics, leading to a more efficient
light fixture. A traditional source may produce more
lumens than an LED source, but it may lose much of its
light when passing through the required optics. It is
important to consider total illuminance, measured in
foot candles or lux, when making comparisons
between light fixtures.
Lifetime
Sustainability
For traditional lighting sources lifetime is reported as
“mean time to failure,” which means the average time
it takes for some percentage of lamps (usually 50%) to
fail completely. With an LED source, light output diminishes over time. Therefore for LED sources, lifetime
typically refers to the useful life of the light output,
which is referred to as lumen maintenance.
LED lighting is often linked to sustainability in the
context of energy. But sustainability is a much larger
concept, with energy efficiency being just one component. Sustainability takes into account environmental
responsibility, including waste reduction, recyclability,
materials and resources, and building and design
practices themselves.
What to remember:
The lifetimes of LED sources and traditional light
sources are defined differently. For white LEDs, lifetime
is referred to as the time after which 70% of the
original light output remains, not when the source has
completely burnt out.
What to remember:
LED lighting supports sustainable design in several
ways: it can reduce energy consumption, it requires
infrequent replacement (leading to less waste), and it
contains no hazardous mercury. Some LED fixtures are
designed to be disassembled more easily for recycling.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps
CFL
A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also called compact fluorescent light, energy-saving light, and compact fluorescent
tube, is a fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent lamp; some types fit into light fixtures formerly used for
incandescent lamps. The lamps use a tube which is curved or folded to fit into the space of an incandescent bulb, and a
compact electronic ballast in the base of the lamp.
Compared to general-service incandescent lamps giving the same amount of visible light, CFLs use one-fifth to one-third
the electric power, and last eight to fifteen times longer. A CFL has a higher purchase price than an incandescent lamp,
but can save over five times its purchase price in electricity costs over the lamp's lifetime.
[1] Like all fluorescent lamps, CFLs contain toxic mercury
[2] which complicates their disposal. In many countries, governments have established recycling schemes for CFLs and
glass generally.
Integral Lamps
Integral lamps combine the tube and ballast in a single unit. These lamps allow consumers to replace incandescent lamps
easily with CFLs. Integrated CFLs work well in many standard incandescent light fixtures, reducing the cost of converting
to fluorescent. 3-way lamp bulbs and dimmable models with standard bases are available.
Non-Integral Lamps
Non-integral CFLs have the ballast permanently installed in the luminaire, and only the lamp bulb is usually changed at
its end of life. Since the ballasts are placed in the light fixture, they are larger and last longer compared to the integrated
ones, and they don't need to be replaced when the bulb reaches its end-of-life. Non-integrated CFL housings can be both
more expensive and sophisticated. They have two types of tubes: a bi-pin tube designed for conventional ballast, and a
quad-pin tube designed for an electronic ballast or a conventional ballast with an external starter. A bi-pin tube contains
an integrated starter, which obviates the need for external heating pins but causes incompatibility with electronic
ballasts.

COLOR TEMPERATURE
Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light that has important applications in lighting, photography,
videography, publishing, manufacturing, astrophysics and other fields. The color temperature of a light
source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that light
source.
The temperature is conventionally stated in units of absolute temperature, known as Kelvin (K).
Higher color temperatures (5000K or more) are called cool colors which appear blue-white. Mid-range color
temperatures (3500K–4100K) look Cool white. Lower color temperatures (2700K–3000K) are called warm
colors and range from red to yellowish-white in tone.

High Intensity Discharge Lamps
Where to use them..
Metal Halide Lamps
High Pressure Sodium Lamps
These lamps creat light when an arc passes through a capsule
holding mercury vapor and other chemical components called
“Metal Halides”.
The additives greatly improve both lumen and color performance. They are widely used in a variety of commercial and
industrial applications where better color rendering is critical.
They can be used indoors and outdoors.
Protected metal halide lamps are also known as “Open Fixture
Rated” lamps.
These types of metal halide lamps have covering over the
quartz arc tube which prevents the outer envelope from
breaking in the rare case that the inner arc tube ruptures.
Pulse start metal halide lamps send an electric pulse to the arc
tube.
This “pulse” allows the lamp to start quicker, maintain lumen
output better, and last longer than probe start metal
halides.Pulse start metal halide lamps must be used in fixtures
designed specifically for pulse start lamps.
Metal halide lamps are ideal for use in retail, industrial, area
lighting, accent lighting, sports lighting, security lighting,
roadway lighting and parking garage applications.
These lamps are named for the sodium vapor
arc that generates their light.
High pressure sodium lamps are one of the
most efficient HID lamps. Their high efficacy
or high ration of lumens per watt creat their
energy -saving capabilities.
High pressure sodium lamps are commonly
used in areas where lamp life and high
efficiency are required and clolor rendering
is not critical.
High pressure sodium lamps provide
efficient lighting solutions for outdoor security, parking garage, parking lot, roadway
lighting and area lighting applications.
Mercury Vapor Lamps
Mercury vapor lamps emit light when a short arc passes
through mercury vapor.
These lamps are designed for applications that require moderate color rendering, such as outdoor security, area lighting,
general flood lighting, barns and parking lots.
