1 01/Year III/2012 Published by PR Department, PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk. • Director: Kevin Monteiro • Editor-inChief: R.Artsanti Alif. • Contributors: Utut Adianto, Chinta Saparini, Rendy Rivianto, Merry Damayanti, Defina R.Tobing Foreword I still remember when Utut Adianto meet me at the office eleven years ago. He initiated a big and qualified chess tournament. Utut is a genius; I do not doubt his confidence. In collaboration with PB Percasi, the chess tournament given the name JAPFA Chess Classic in Bali in 2000 was proved to be successful. It has become JAPFA’s stepping stone to begin its commitment in chess. In the same year JAPFA Chess Club , chess club for JAPFA employees, was inaugurated. As a corporate, since 2000 until today, JAPFA have sponsored numbers of important chess match in our country. The JAPFA Chess Festival (JCF) held on 24 to 28 October 2011 was the sixth time. Presenting eleven game categories, JCF 2011 involves 600 chess players from 24 provinces in the country. From year to year, JCF is the largest chess tournament in Indonesia. The special thing about JCF 2011 was the JAPFA International Women Tournament. In this tournament, three women grand masters from Europe: GMW Sopiko Guramishvili (Georgia), GMW Jana Krivec (Slovenia) and GMW Burtasova Anna (Russia) has compete against three Indonesia’s best female chess players: MIW Sihite Chelsie Monica, MFW Dewi AA Citra, and MFW Medina Warda Aulia. Although the tournaments were won by Sopiko, Medina can be proud because her criterion has advances. She is now entitled as MIW (Women International Master). The newsletter in this issue will be a Main Report of JAPFA Chess Festival 2011. In addition, we present JAPFA4Kids Kaleidoscope in 2011. Photos and reports delivered the message that JAPFA4Kids program has experienced positive developments both in the number of participants and the variety of activities. Nutrition Campaign still remains the main activity, while JAPFA4Kids Awards is one of the tools to measure the success.. Cooperation with various organizations outside JAPFA also enlightens and enlivened the work. JAPFA4Kids has recently established cooperation with the Books for Asia from The Asia Foundation. Together we distribute excellent educational books for children to depths of the country. Articles of collaboration can also be found inside. Through the year of 2011, JAPFA4Kids have visited many villages in Indonesian. We met with thousands of children. We learn from them, and we also work for them. We realize that we still have a lot of work to do. However, our determination for this new year is still the same, which is to accompany the children to prepare themselves to face the challenge in the future. Happy New Year 2012! Menpora then motivates by saying; “We do want to draw experience as much as possible from the guest participants with higher ratings,” with his typical smile. In Andi’s opinion, today there are a lot of new seeds of Indonesian chess player growing among the nation. At first chess was mostly played by adults, but now there are a lot of young people who like it. Andi was pleased to see the JCF 2011, “I was just entering the room, and I saw small children 5 playing chess. Two more years, if this spirit can be maintained; I am sure we will be able to dominate the Asian chess. To make that hope comes true, Andi wants JAPFA Chess Festival to be held regularly. “I request for tournaments such The JAPFA Chess festival to be done routinely, because it has its own appeal for youth. We hope that similar competitions can coach chess players systematically to create a new Grand Master, “he said. Menpora’s statement was in line with eleven categories of the game. From the youngest under the age of 10 years old to the veteran of over 55 years old; from the man or woman professionals, until an amateur without national master title in the category between companies. Some interesting things were found in the JCF 2011. The youngest JCF 2011 participant was Afit Suradiraja. He was the son of Indonesia’s first GM, Herman Suradiradja. Afit is 8 years old, and he stated that he has learn to play chess since 3 years Ign. Herry Wibowo, JAPFA Director, witnessed the game match between WGM Krivec and WFM Dewi JAPFA expectations which was conveyed by Director of JAPFA, Ign. Herry Wibowo at the opening of JCF 2011,“We hope, through JAPFA Chess Festivals, chess would remain a popular sport in our community, which will stimulate new potentials, which later will be able to bring Indonesia’s name as the international chess athlete producer in the world” Ir. Eka Putra Wirya, Chairman of the JCF 2011 Committee also stated the same hope, “JAPFA Chess Festival was initiated by PB Percasi and PT. Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk as a part of an effort to develop and cultivate Chess as a sport in Indonesia which is expected to bring a superior generation of chess, who is smart, strong, with a sportive soul, friendly, and mutual respect”. In its implementation, JCF 2011 has 6 old. Afit was playing in the Junior category (U- 10). While the oldest participant in the JCF 2011 is Jesse Torre, 72 years old. He is the eldest brother of GM Eugene Torre, Filipino chess players. Jesse has lived in Indonesia for last four years. In the JCF 2011, he played in the Open Tournament category. Both Afit and Jesse, was not crowned with victory. Even so, both said that they were happy to join the prestigious event such as JCF 2011. A special moment was brought by GM Susanto Megaranto in the Open Category and Nyimas Shieta Prima (9) in Junior Female Age 10 Category. Why it isn’t so. Both managed to figure perfect 7 points in the seventh round of JCF. We can be sure that they are the first champion (See: The Winners JCF 2011). JAPFA WOMEN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT The special thing about the eleven categories of JCF 2011 is JAPFA Women International Tournament (WIT). This is the second JAPFA WIT after it was held for the first time in 2008 and raised Irene Kharisma Sukandar as the first woman chess player in Indonesia with the title Grand Master. This phenomenon is an initial progressive step of Indonesian woman chess player. Since then, Indonesian women chess players’ passions has increased. This is the reason why JAPFA WIT was held again. JAPFA WIT 2011 is a dual battle among the Indonesia’s three best female chess players - called the dream girls – with three of Europe’s chess players. Currently the rank of dream girls in Indonesia is just below Irene Kharisma Sukandar. They are: Women International Master (MIW) Chelsie Sihite Monica (15), Woman Fide Master (MFW) Dewi AA Citra (17), and MFW Medina Warda Aulia (14). The tournament system set for JAPFA WIT 2011 is a double round Robbin system or ten rounds of chess game where player move the white pieces once and black piece once and face the same opponents. After the exciting matches, Sopiko Guramishvili won JAPFA WIT 2011 by earning 6,5 point. She earned her last point in winning against the MIW Chelsie Monica Sihite. Although won by the guests chess players. JAPFA WIT 2011 created sweet memories for Medina Warda Aulia. After earning 5 points, Medina has now earned the title of Women International Master (MIW). Kristianus Liem, Head of Coaching Achievement of Percasi admitted that he was surprised by the Medina’s achievement, “... it is the result of her consistent game throughout the championship, “ he said proudly. Another member of the Dream Girls, MNW Chelsie Monica Sihite earned 4, 5 points and MFW Dewi AA Citra earned 2.5 points. Although the dream of beating the three European women chess players did not come true, but the Vice Chairman of PB Percasi, GM Utut Adianto stated that what has been done by the three Indonesian women’s chess players was already their best extent . At the closing ceremony of JCF 2011, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, General Chairman of PB Percasi also similarly said. “Although they did not come out as the champion, but they could meet the game of the woman grand master,” he said. ACHIEVING IN SEA GAMES XXVI After winning the JCF 2011, the chess players depart for Palembang to join SEA Games XXVI. MIW Chelsie Monica Sihite earned a silver medal and MFW Medina Warda Aulia earned a bronze medal. Both competing in the category of Woman Rapid Chess. While GMW Irene Kharisma Sukandar, who won the JC 2008, achieved to earn a bronze medal. JAPFA CHESS CLUB JAPFA Chess Club (JCC) was established in October 2000. It was made to accommodate and build excitement for chess among employees; well as a recreation for JAPFA employees in various parts of the country. At that time, even until now, there are rarely companies involved in chess as sport. GM Adianto who became chairman of the JCC when it was then recruited friends who are senior chess players such as: the late GM Edhi Handoko, MI Salor Sitanggang, MN Fahmi Jauhari and MN Novian Siregar. They were invited to join and help the JCC. Until now, JCC has a good chess coaching system for JAPFA employees. This system helps the club members to be able to play the chess with more strategies. Since 2001, the club held chess training activities for employees exclusively from the big city like Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya and Makassar down to the small towns such as Takisung in Central Borneo, Bati-Bati in South Borneo, Gisting in the valley of Tanggamus-Lampung, the cool Bedugul in Bali and Banyuwangi in Central Java. Meanwhile, the activities ‘Training from employees to employees’ are capable to contribute and educate employee’s friends and family. In the National Championships XXXV in Palembang in 2002, the club should be proud. One of JAPFA employee, namely Pepen Wahyudin of PT Multibreeder Adirama Indonesia (MBAI), a subsidiary of JAPFA in Purwakarta, successfully obtained a National Master title. The proud of success was brought by GM Susanto Megaranto who achieved to win a gold medal in the category of Men Standard Chess. This was the only gold earned by the Indonesian Chess Team. MF Hamdani Rudin who ranked third in Open Championship JCF 2011, won a silver medal in Quick Chess category. The achievements of the Chess players in JCF 2011 certainly also make JAPFA proud. Earlier, before the departure for SEA Games XXVI, MFW Medina Warda Aulia claimed that she had not known which games category will she be playing for, as an athlete, her job is to practice and practice to achieve. JAPFA, with its commitment for chess, helps Indonesian chess players by providing tournaments for them to practice, test their tactics and strategies. JAPFA Chess Festival is one of them. In the future, Artsanti Alif says, “JAPFA’s Commitment on Chess has been proven for more than one decade since 2000. And JAPFA will continue to support in future”. •J• GM Susanto Megaran to win the gold medal in SEA Games XXVI In the same year, the club recruited two young chess players: Susanto Megaranto and Tirta Chandra Purnama. At the age of 17 years old, Susanto became Indonesian youngest Grandmaster after earning grandmaster norm in Calvia Chess Olympiad, Spain in 2004. While Tirta earned International Master title in 2008 at 22 years old in the first ASEAN Masters Chess Circuit, Tarakan, East Borneo. With support from JAPFA, in 2005 both has the opportunity for tour of Europe for two months and participated in some international matches. Susanto and Tirta now become the JAPFA Chess Club top chess players and Indonesian mainstay chess players •J• 7 JAPFA WOMEN INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT PLAYERS PROFILE JAPFA Woman International Tournament (WIT) is one of the main categories in the JAPFA Chess Festival 2011. This was done to support the Nutrition campaign. J APFA4Kids is one of PT Japfa Comfeed (JAPFA) Indonesia Tbk program of social concern for the Indonesian children, in the form of nutrition campaign with the theme: “Indonesian Children Care for Nutrition” Nutrition Campaign was held at the schools around JAPFA’s business unit. Since the first time held on August 2008, Nutrition Campaign was held routinely every month. In each campaign, it involves schools reaching not less than one thousand students at once. Some of them were selected and trained to be Dokter Kecil. All the way to December 2011, the Nutrition Campaign had reached 181 public elementary schools in 43 districts / cities located in 16 provinces in Indonesia. It involves 37,987 pupils and 2812 teachers. There are three aim of Nutrition Campaign: increase the children’s, in Elementary School (SD), understanding that nutritious animal products are not “luxury food”; increased the insight knowledge about the importance of consuming animal products for their health and intelligence to face the challenges of globalization; and improved the understanding of schools management in order to run the school in more orderly, 12 planned, organized and programmed manner so as to improve the students’ learning quality and the school environment. To fulfill the third aim, JAPFA designed a specific training called 5S for Headmaster, teachers and other staff in the school. 5S is actually the structure guideline and maintenance in all working areas of JAPFA throughout Indonesia. The aim is to support the work to achieve the optimal results. 5S stands for: SEIRI / Sorting, Seiton / Organizing, Seiso / Cleaning, Seiketsu / Establishing, and Shitsuke / Habituating. Nutrition campaign was conducted for 2 days in a row. First day: 5S and Dokter Kecil Training. Second day: JAPFA4Kids Cultural Festival, which includes free basic medical check-up, JAPFA4Kids nutritional package distribution, and traditional art performance by each school. JAPFA4Kids nutrition package consists of 3 pillow milk, 2 packs of ready to eat sausage, boiled egg, two picture story books, and a school writing equipment. POSITIVE RESPONSE AND COOPERATION From year to year the pacticipants of the Nutrition campaign, both the number of schools and students, showed a twofold increase (See: Graph). This phenomenon grows with the positive response from the participants, people, also government where the Nutrition Campaign was held. Last September for example, Regent of Purwakarta, H. Dedi Mulyadi, attended JAPFA4Kids Awards awarding event in Cibatu, Purwakarta. This is the second time he attended after his first attendance in JAPFA4Kids Awards last year which is also in Purwakarta. As usual, Dedi gave his characteristic welcome speech that make the children become more enthusiastic to participate on the Nutrition Campaign. This year JAPFA4Kids establish new partnerships with several parties. They are Department of Health and Local Health Center in Dokter Kecil training; Sinar Harapan and the Independent Journalists Alliance in journalism training and competitions; and Books for Asia from The Asia Foundation for the distribution of English books for Nutrition Campaign schools participant. In the internal scope of JAPFA, the involvement of local business unit are no longer limited to the survey to see which school will be helped, or prepare and assist the implementation of the nutrition campaign. Regional units are also welcome to initiate ideas in their region along with the JAPFA4Kids Program. In Sukabumi for example, Region II Broiler Unit PT Ciomas Adisatwa, under Achmad Dawami, contributed lunch each time the nutrition package is distributed in Sukabumi for five months. They also build a bathroom in SDN Batukarut, Sukaraja, Sukabumi. Initiatives like that were important in establishing communication and relationship with the community around the local unit area. Because JAPFA4Kids become one of the tools in the JAPFA’s local unit area to begin with. DOKTER KECIL Dokter Kecil Training is a new part of JAPFA4Kids program which was held since January 2011. Those who were chosen to attend the training are the students that are doing well in school, in good health, neatly dressed, in healthy behaviors, good character, and are helpful. Dokter Kecil was expected to be able to participate in the implementation of maintaining and improving health of self, friends, family, and environment, and also participates in the School Health Unit (UKS). They were also asked to help the implementation of 5S program in schools. The first Dokter Kecil training was held in SDN 3 Cikande, Cikande, Serang, Banten. The participants were 13 students and 3 Teachers of UKS. They represents the three participating schools of JAPFA4Kids Nutritional Campaign in January 2011, namely: SDN Pabuaran, SDN 2 Cikande, and SDN 3 Cikande. Along 2011 JAPFA4Kids has trained 700 Dokter Kecil. During the training, JAPFA4Kids collaborated with the Health Department and the Local health center. They give four training programs namely: Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBs), Nutrition, First Aid(P3K), and Dokter Kecil with Character, while the last was specially designed by JAPFA. The goal for the Dokter Kecil training is not only educates children about health, but also good character. To show their sincerity, after the training, the Dokter Kecil pledges the “Dokter Kecil Vow”. JURNALIS CILIK Journalistic training was another one of the new program of JAPFA4Kids. It was initiated with daily newspaper Sinar Harapan and collaborated with Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI). This program was named “Jurnalis Cilik JAPFA4Kids”. It was held for five months from January to May 2011. The participants was more than 1000 students from 74 school based in four areas of JAPFA4Kids. JAPFA4Kids Jurnalis Cilik activities includes journalism training and competitions. Each school forms a team to make a newspaper to represent their school. Each team consists of five children. The paper then named Koran Cilik JAPFA4Kids. The theme of the paper is “Local Uniqueness” from each area. The journalism contest prize valued at IDR127, 5 million was held in two level. The first level takes place at the region level. In which the winners were invited to Jakarta to participate in the national level competition. Besides earning the prize, the winners are also invited to visit the tourism sights in Jakarta. JAPFA4KIDS AWARDS 2011 JAPFA4Kids School and Student Awards Competitions is an annual activity held for the nutrition campaign participants from the past year. This is also a place to evaluate whether the nutrition campaign already has reached the target. This means whether the improvement of child’s nutrition as well as the clean and orderly school environ- ment, can improve the child’s performance. In fact, same as the previous year, JAPFA4Kids Awards this year brings the potential of the regional kids. The result of the competition shows that if the opportunity were given, the children are capable to achieve. JAPFA then try to facilitate it. This year is the second year of JAPFA4Kids Awards. Total prize worth IDR 350 million are up for the children. The participants were 12 000 children from 58 elementary schools. The categories of the competition held vary more than it was before. In the Student Competitions, competition was divided into three categories namely; drawing competition for grade 1-3, writing and bulletin board for grade 3-5. As for School Competition it remains in the form of competition between schools in the implementation of 5S. Overall, the event of JAPFA4Kids Awards 2011 lasted for five months, starting on first of May and ends in late September. Interestingly, JAPFA4Kids Awards awarding event were held coincide with Nutrition Campaign Culture Festival in Sukabumi. The event was so splendor because thousands of children from various regions in Indonesia were able to meet each other. HOPE Nutrition Campaign 2011 begins in January at Banten and ends in December at the same province; to be exact in Cisoka district, Tangerang. Even so, it is not the last. Nutrition Campaign schedules for 2012 were full already. The entire JAPFA4Kids team is ready to go back to the region and meet the children’s cheerful faces. With commitment and sincere intention to give the best, the team is optimist to face the challenges •J• 13 JAPFA4kids PROGRAM Xing Ying with the children who participates in JAPFA4Kids Kampar, Riau. NUTRITION CAMPAIGN IN SUKABUMI, KAMPAR, AND TANGERANG There are lunches served in the second JAPFA4Kids nutritional package distribution in Sukabumi district, West Java. This is one of the supports from JAPFA regional business units for JAPFA4Kids Program. C orporate citizenship is the concept. It is a full awareness derived from a whole understanding about the role and responsibilities of business in social life. Not only social concern, corporate citizenship suggests the companies to involve in raising other citizens’ awareness and receive more information as well play an active role in efforts of enlightening various communities in the country. In realities, PT Japfa Comfeed Tbk, through the Program JAPFA4Kids, has been campaigning about nutrition. The selected theme: “Indonesian Children Cares for Nutrition”. The campaign is held for two consecutive days at one location. The goal is to give an understanding about the 14 One of the Dokter Kecil read poetry in Culture Festival in Kampar, in the presence of Imam Wahyudi, Head of Region III PT Ciomas Adisatwa. importance of consuming nutritious foods, mainly from the product animal. This activity targets public elementary school students around the JAPFA regional business unit area. JAPFA4KIDS AND JAPFA REGIONAL UNIT JAPFA4Kids program is not simply a social concern. It helps the JAPFA regional business unit to establish communication with community around the location. On the implementation of the Nutrition Campaign, the regional unit would survey the schools around the business area to determine the location, establish cooperation with authorities, as well as prepare and assist the implementation of the activities on the due date. After the campaign, for the next five months, the regional unit would distribute nutrition package to the children participated on the Nutrition Campaign. It’s content is about the same, but without the books and writing tools, which is 3 pillow milk, 2 packaged ready to eat sausage, and 1 boiled eggs. From friendship and team work like this, it is hoped that a better communication with the nearby community, and also local government can be tied closer. lift each other. Of course the ones with the smaller body have difficulties for that. This scene invites laughter. The children loves it, love having lunch from JAPFA and the additional nutritional package from from JAPFA4Kids. Shortly, the JAPFA regional units’ involvement and support also determines whether or not the aims of JAPFA4Kids program are completely accomplished. In various program JAPFA4Kids working areas, the regional units’ role in Nutrition Campaign activities from day to day looks more real. Here are the Nutrition campaign activities flash in October, November, and December 2011 in public elementary school that are in one of JAPFA operation unit area, PT Ciomas Adisatwa. LOVING NUTRITION IN SUKABUMI The Nutrition campaign held in Sukabumi regency, West Java province on October 27 to 28 was lively. Ucup, one of the teachers from SDN 2 Purwasari were happy with the Nutrition campaign. Especially, as he participated in the 5S Training, “Actually we already have our own working program. Hundreds students of SDN 001, 002, and 003 Lubuk Sakat gathers together. That day was the last day of JAPFA4Kids Nutrition Campaign, and they are participating in the free medical check-up and receive the nutrition package. JAPFA4Kids Campaign in Kampar was actually involves 5 public elementary school. Because of technical constraints, two schools, namely SDN 004 and SDN 005, didn’t get to participate in Culture Festival. Free health check-up and nutrition package distribution were distributed in the two schools on 29 November. While at the same time, 64 other students attended the Dokter Kecil training and 72 teachers participates in the 5S training. Just like in other places, Iryanti, trainer from JAPFA, delivers 5S material in a clear and pleasant manner. Many teachers were impressed. Usri, the Headmaster of SDN 0055 praised, “This is a good training. Here, we know which ones are good and which ones are not by seeing it in pictures. We came to know the comparison.” While Yeni Ariza, the Headmaster of SDN 001, recognizes that 5S material will be very useful for work, she’s optimist, “Joining JAPFA4Kids Awards 2012 and come to Jakarta”. Imam Wahyudi, Head of Region III PT Ciomas Adisatwa hopes, “5S Training from JAPFA will support the learning and teaching activities, so that the educational activity could be more fun”. The Nutrition Campaign in Kampar also receives support from the local people. We can see it from the presence of Yusriandi, Regional Head of Lubuk Sakat village, during activity. He admits that this was the first time such activity was held in Lubuk Sakat. In his speech Yusriandi thanked JAPFA4Kids for Helping Teachers to teach 15 about the importance of nutrition for kids. Other support for the Nutrition Campaign in Kampar also comes from the the participation a foreign volunteer. She is Xing Ying Tan, young women aged 17 years old from Singapore. Instead of spending her time off visiting tourist attractions, Xing, as she was called, involved in the Nutrition campaign instead. She came one day before the event to participate in surveying the field, help prepare the event, and in the Culture Festival by teaching the song Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star to the children. The teachers who participate in the 5S Training in Sukabumi took a picture together. 16 adds our knowledge. Incidentally, it’s just the right time, while we are re-arranging our school.” SDN Campaka III is still cleaning up. It was just in 2008 that their school stands on the area of 4000 m2. When the Nutrition campaign was held, other corner of the school still appears busy with construction of additional classrooms. One pick-up car was going back and forth to deliver the new furniture. In 2010, SDN Campaka III received RSSN status (Pioneer National Standards School) and receives music equipment and computers from the Korean government. Meanwhile, Erri Kristianto, Head of Jabotabek Area PT Ciomas Adisatwa, said that JAPFA4Kids Nutrition Campaign was one of JAPFA’s contributions for the public. As many as 80% of employees Cisoka Farm is local resident. No wonder why Cisoka Farm is active in establishing good relationship with local people. Sinung Triatmanto Nur, head of Cisoka Farm, tells how every harvest time of chicken (once in two months) they share 700 of them to the four neighborhood around the farm. Cisoka Farm also allows farmers to take some of the chicken’s dirt for fertilizer. On the third day, a free medical check-up and Culture festival was held for SDN Campaka III students. They attended and gave appreciation to those who performed. The Nutrition Campaign in Cisoka, Tangerang was a sweet closing for the year activity. Adding optimism to organized next Nutrition Campaigns activities in 2012 •J• TAN XING YING, JAPFA4Kids Volunteer “If there are opportunities, I want to do it again” T he song Twinkle-twinkle little star was heard in the yard of SDN 003 Lubuk Sakat, Perhentian Raja district, Kampar regency, Riau. Although stammered, dozens of children try to sing it enthusiastically. Tan Xing Ying (17), JAPFA4Kids volunteer from Singapore, taught the song to the children in JAPFA4Kids Nutrition Campaign Culture Festival on 30 November. The atmosphere was actually uncomfortable. The air was so hot. The sun was blazing. But Xing, so she called, trying to overcome the uncomfortable weather by continuing to spread smiles and laughter to the children. “Hot, very hoooooot,” said Xing many times as she brushed her bangs away from her face after the ceremony. Her hair was tied in a ponytail, while some of her short hair comes out naturally. She sat on a plastic chair under a tent. Carrying a pink backpack and drinking mineral water. Finally she can rest for a while. Previously she was drawn to and fro. Not only the children, but the teachers also wanted to take a picture with her; Xing could not reject. They were happy that Xing had come. This is Xing’s first visit to Pekanbaru. Although her father works in Jakarta, Xing admits she rarely comes to Indonesia. Coincidentally now was school holiday, the she become a volunteer for JAPFA4Kids to spend her holiday. Xing did not speak Indonesia at all, she was conversing in English. At first she was concerned that it would be a problem. But she finds it on the SERVE. One of the activities of Tan Xing Ying as a JAPFA4Kids volunteers. contrary. “In Pekanbaru I just realize that the experience I want and my assistance doesn’t not constrained with language,” she said. During her three days there Xing was busy. She arrives on 28 November, a day before JAPFA4Kids Nutrition campaign. Xing helps preparing for the event; the venue, training materials, Dokter Kecil Certificate, transporting things, and packing up after the ceremony. When asked, Xing said she likes all the assigned tasks. “But what I like the most is being able to interact with children. Perhaps we did not understand what was spoken to each other, but their openness and friendliness was clearly visible “ she lit up. At the end of the Culture Festival, Xing gave a short speech in English, translated by the committee. Xing says she’s happy to have come to Pekanbaru. She thanks for given the opportunity. As a memento, Xing gives a present to the three participating schools in the Nutrition campaign. Social activities are not something new to Xing Ying. She stated, in Singapore there are Community Involvement Program. This activity is mandatory for students. Xing had joined this program several times. She, for example, had helped the elderly at home, taught the students who have difficulty to learn the lesson, collecting food and donations for those in need. Experience in social activities makes it easy for her to be a JAPFA4Kids volunteer. Though, of course, the language was one of her challenges there. Xing admitted, JAPFA4Kids Program was very good for the schools.“Creating activities that aim to educate the children about nutrition of course have a greater impact than just by donating food. If you look at the committee busy setting up the event, I think this Nutrition Campaign needs more volunteers. If there are opportunities, I want to do it again,” she said with a grin. Xing Ying went to school in Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore. At her spare time, she likes to read books or play squash. The sport is similar to tennis and is played indoor •J• With the children participants of the Nutrition Campaign in Kampar. 17 COLLABORATION KOLABORASI JAPFA4Kids and BOOKS FOR ASIA COLLABORATE FOR INDONESIAN CHILDREN JAPFA4Kids had collaborated with other organization a lot. Now with Books for Asia, one of program from The Asia Foundation. P resentation about the JAPFA4Kids program by R. Artsanti Alif, Head of JAPFA Public Relations, about six months ago attracts Sintadewi Aryasatyani’s attention, Books for Asia Program Officer. Sinta sees that the participating schools of JAPFA4Kids match the criteria of the schools to receive book from Books for Asia. Which is: not an international standard school, doesn’t use English as an instruction language, and a public school. They agreed to work together. BOOKS FOR ASIA Books for Asia is one of programs from The Asia Foundation, a nongovernmental and nonprofit organizations working to build a peaceful, prosperous, fair and open Asia-Pacific region. Books for Asia believe that qualified books have a power to change life. So they collaborate with big publisher such as McGraw Hill, John Wiley & Sons, Houghton Mifflin Harcout, Lynne Rienner, W. W. Norton & Company, Abrams, and Islans Press. All books were written in English. Since the first time in 1954 until now, Books for Asia have donate more than 45 million of books that spread to thousand biggest institution in 18 countries in Asia. In 2010 alone, Books for Asia have sent 1 Murid-murid SDN Campakamulya, Cianjur, Jawa Barat memamerkan buku-buku dari Books for Asia. 18 million books worth of US 43 million dollars to those countries. In Indonesia, every year it provides more than 20 thousand books to be distributed to 12 provinces in Java, Sumatera, Sulawesi, and Borneo. JAPFA4Kids and Books for Asia collaboration may extend the range of books distribution. This is because JAPFA4Kids program which has begun in 2008 until now have reached 16 provinces in country. In that case both can complete each other; especially as the number of participating schools of JAPFA4Kids from year to year showed an increase. The larger area of books distribution, the more children are helped to see the diversity of ideas, ideas, and opportunities for the better future. Reading is an early step for that. COLLABORATION At the beginning of the collaboration, Books for Asia donate 1770 books consisting of 52 titles. To match the recipient of the book, JAPFA4Kids only selects the illustrated children’s book and English language textbooks and posters that support English lessons. Considering the availability number of the books, for now JAPFA4Kids determine the criteria only achieving school is to receive the books. Achieving schools here refer to the winning schools of JAPFA4Kids Awards in 2010 and 2011, and the winning schools of Jurnalis Cilik JAPFA 4Kids 2011. There are 35 achieving schools chosen. Each receives the books packed in one jumbo carton. Some receives 52 books, some only 47 books. Why? The difference of this numbers cannot be avoid, because there are several series of the books that cannot be separated. GIVING BOOKS Wednesday, October 26th 2011 was a historic day that the collaboration was established. That day Artsanti and Sinta visited two JAPFA4Kids schools in Cianjur, West Java to give the donated books. While the 33 other schools receiving books, is sent by mail delivery services. Both lucky schools who receive a visit was SDN Kidang Buana, Jl. Sacadilaga, Ciharashas village, Jamali village, and SDN Campakamulya, Nambo village. Each receives 52 books. What an excited surprise. JAPFA4Kids come without notice. Artsanti said, “This is done on purpose. So there will not be troublesome. The intention was only to gather and deliver the books. Simply.”. Also together with the group from JAPFA was Cooperation between JAPFA4Kids and Books for Asia makes the distribution of books wider. We can see the students of Jimbung Elementary School enjoy reading, at Kalikotes Sub-district, Klaten they give their energy and sincere heart for the children. The burden of carrying heavy cardboard full of books were instantly gone when they saw the teachers’ and children’s expression as the cardboard was opened. “Well, I’ve never seen a book as great as this is!” said one of the teachers. The books that were chosen was just not any kind book. Printed on apparent quality paper. The letters was well printed, the illustrations uses sunny and bright color. Among all the books there is one large-sized. Bound with iron ring, much like desk top calendar. The size is 69cm x 51cm with 3cm thick. Very striking. That book was packed in a single separate cardboard. How do you read it? The easiest is to set it up on a desk or lap while seated. One hand holds Rudiawan S, together with Cianjur Education Service, Ujang, Sinta, and it, while the other hand Thia Gaffiana at Kiang Buana Elementary School, Cianjur District, West Java. turns the page. The Rudiawan Setiadarma, Head of West Java children were amazed. This is their first time Region II PT Ciomas, two PIC: Ujang seeing such immeasurably big book. Kusnaedi, Technical Services & Sales PT As soon as they got the idea that the Surya Tani Pemuka, Djoko Winarno, Deputy books are for them, the children then race Head Region of PT Ciomas, and Thia to grab it. They want to take it, wants to Gaffiana from PT So Good Food. touch it, wants to know what’s inside it. The motivation to give was reflected After going through the book, they are still from both of the PIC as they carry the box hesitant putting it back. Some of the of books from the car up to the principal’s children are seen to hold the book tightly office. While they are used to giving a in front of their chest. They were afraid that commands to a number of staff, this time the books are going to be taken away. “Madam, can I bring this book home? I have siblings at home. I want to show this to him.” Artsanti then tried to calm them , “You all can take turns in reading this book, later this book will stored in the school library. You can read it again anyway, but if you want to borrow and take the book home you should ask the teachers or the librarian first”. Anisa, one of the students from Kidang Buana elementary school, look attracted to the books in front of her. She flipped through the book while looking at the pictures there. She then realized, the book does not use Bahasa Indonesia. Anisa then asked Artsanti bravely, “Ma’am, how can I read this book? I do not understand.” Realizing the language constraints; the teachers answered Anisa’s concern. They will find a special English teacher for Children so that they will be able to read English books on their own. Like tit for tat, Books for Asia are also planning to hold English workshop for school’s teachers receiving the books donation. This plan was a relief. Completing and adding value on this new beginning of collaboration in books distribution. Although it is only a first step, it doesn’t close the possibility that JAPFA4Kids and Books for Asia will be treading another steps together. All this collaboration was arranged to be continuous; so that the books will really become a positive force for Indonesian children that are living in various areas, to be brave and change life to build a better Indonesia•J• 19 PHOTO GALLERY o n q p 1.
