A Bohemian Evening in
Carmel-by-the-Sea
Yuan to be Amazed? Saturday, October 22

Guests: 20
Dress: Bohemian chic
Price: $250
Monday, November 7
Time: 6:00
Guests: 26
Dress: Cocktail
Price: $400
The homes and interiors crafted by brothers Henry and Charles Sumner Greene
are among the masterpieces of the arts and crafts style. Charles Sumner
Greene’s Studio, which he built in Carmel-by-the-Sea in the early 1920s, has been
called “one of the most beautiful rooms in America,” by the American Institute
of Architects. Noted architect and author Ted Wells will greet you with a cocktail
and a roaring fire to warm you up, while a jazz pianist will play standards from
the 20s and 30s to chill you down. The five-course dinner, using only locallysourced foods, will be a culinary journey evoking the history and tradition of the
Bohemian art colony of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Mysterious symbols carved in the
doors and massive redwood beams abound in this unique building. Throughout
the evening, you’ll be celebrating Greene's belief that the true essence (and for
our dinner, the true flavor) of symbols must be experienced to be understood.
SC Yuan was among the most celebrated artists associated with the Monterey

Peninsula. Born in Hangchou, China, he settled here after World War II and
his paintings won him numerous awards and solo exhibitions. Yuan is a
particular favorite of the evening’s hosts and they have several of his stunning
Impressionist paintings on display in their beautiful Pebble Beach home.
After this feast for the eyes, you’ll move into the dining room to celebrate the
culinary artistry of Chef Wendy Brodie, famous for her creative style with food,
presentation and table decor. Your delectable feast will include pairings with a
generous selection of California and French wines carefully chosen from your
hosts’ extensive cellar.

What’s more fun than being in the kitchen with a master chef? Well…eating, of
course! Your hostess, a contemporary art collector, invites you to her splendid
Pebble Beach home to watch Chef Brandon Miller of Mundaka Restaurant in
Carmel prepare the fabulous tastes of Spain. You’ll have a unique opportunity
to learn the techniques and secrets that Brandon uses to keep Mundaka packed
with happy diners every night. Naturally, wine will be flowing as magic is created
in the kitchen. The enchanting sounds of live guitar will serenade you as we savor
our Iberian feast by candlelight. Your hostess’ cellar is known for its superb wines
and she is personally selecting exceptional pairings for this evening.
OK, we know you love Armin Hansen—the San Francisco-born painter whose
depictions of the sea and its rugged fishermen epitomize Monterey Bay in the
early twentieth century. Now imagine a beautiful hilltop estate in the Santa Lucia
Preserve with absolutely heavenly views of the valley below. In addition to your
delectable culinary menu will be an offering of Armin Hansen paintings never
before displayed in public. As you take in the landscape and savor the tastes of a
fabulous dinner, your gracious hosts will provide a noted expert to expound on
the life and accomplishments of this extraordinary artist.
