enjoyed a day filled with farm safety information.
Everything from archery, to hearing safety, to
safety around large/small farm animals, to ATV
safety. A mock ATV rescue kicked off the day’s activities.

Dear Parents, Students, and District Stakeholders,
I am writing this newsletter article on the first full fall day of 2014. The summer is officially over and the 2014-2015
school year is in full swing. While the warm days of summer are behind us until the summer of 2015, the fall weather is usually
quite pleasant. I plan to enjoy the mild days and cool evenings before the bitter cold of winter arrives, and I hope you do as well.
The school year is off to a great start, and I am confident the positive momentum we have been able to build to this point will
continue.
I want to take the opportunity to address an issue that recently presented itself. In 2001, the federal government implemented the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Essentially, this federal legislation began the process of holding schools accountable for making sure every student in every public school in the United States met minimum academic standards. On the
surface, this legislation appeared to be exactly what public school districts in the US should strive to attain. Why wouldn’t every
school work to make sure every student meets minimum academic standards? To be very honest, the staff and students at Pender Public Schools works very hard day in and day out to help students maximize their abilities and meet or exceed the minimum
academic standards.
While this legislation was passed in 2001, public education in the US was given 12 years to achieve this goal. A timeline
was established and the bar for the minimum percentage of students required to meet the minimum academic standards slowly
raised. At the time, this legislation seemed harmless mostly because 12 years is a long time. The 2013-2014 school year in 2001
seemed centuries away.
As we all know, time has slowly ticked away, and the 2013-2014 school year is now in our rear view mirror. In other
words, the federal expectation for Pender Public Schools was for all students in grade 3-8 and 11 to meet minimum academic
standards in both reading and math. Unfortunately, Pender did not hit that target. Pender also missed a target during 20122013 school year at one grade level in the content area of reading. During the 12-13 school year, 89% of students in 11th grade
were required to meet minimum standards, but Pender fell short of that mark as well. This has placed the district in the undesirable category of “Not Met” with respect to federal government expectations for student performance. Furthermore, the High School is in an even more undesirable category of “Needs Improvement” because the expectation was not met for two consecu-­‐
tive school years.
Please don’t panic, and please keep reading. Almost every school in Nebraska is in the same or a very similar situation. That is the case because the expectation of 100% of students being at or above the minimum academic standards is not reasonable. Common sense tells us that we will always have students at various levels with respect to knowledge, learning, and academic achievement. I would love to say it is fully possible for every student in every public school in the country to meet the
minimum academic standards, but that is simply not possible. I am a tremendously optimistic person by nature, but even my
optimism isn’t enough to overcome the realism of this impossible expectation.

District patrons may or may not hear much about Pender or other schools throughout the State of Nebraska when the
“State of the Schools Report” is publicly released in late October. The State of the Schools Report is an annual report of various
school data including the prior year’s accountability assessments commonly referred to as NeSA assessments. Regardless of whether or not negative information will be shared about PPS, I want Pender’s district patrons to know that we have a high quality school that provides students with a high quality education. The education we provide for our students allows them to be
very successful adults capable doing anything they desire. It is unfortunate that good schools like Pender might have a negative
light shined on them due to the unrealistic expectations of the federal government. Pender will continue to do everything possible to maximize the potential of each and every student in the district. We do a wonderful job of educating our students, and I
am confident in the education and opportunities that are available and provided to our students.
I think it is also important to mention that Nebraska is one of very few states required to meet the federal expectations
set forth in NCLB. This is the case because most states in the US have applied for and received a waiver. The waiver requires
states to comply with other federal requirements, most notably, the Common Core State Standards and the assessments associated with those standards. The Nebraska Department of Education has not applied for a waiver for various reasons which means
public schools in Nebraska are still held accountable to meet the expectations of NCLB. The schools in the states that have applied for and received a waiver do not have to meet the NCLB expectations. I do not know how the Nebraska Department of
Education plans to proceed, but until a waiver is received or a change in federal policy happens, all public schools in Nebraska will
be held accountable to meet the expectations set forth in NCLB.
The good news is that PPS is NOT in jeopardy of losing the ability to educate district students. Furthermore, PPS will
continue to provide a wonderful education for every student in the district. School personnel plan to use the NCLB expectations
and the label of “Not Met” as motivation to help make PPS an even better school district. We are not naïve enough to think that
improvement is not possible, and we work very hard to improve the education provided to our students all of the time. That
being said, I am very proud to be part of this wonderful school district. It is full of amazing students, wonderful teachers and staff
members, positive and supportive parents, and district patrons that are simply good people. I think we should all share that
pride because PPS really is a darn good school!

Pendragon Students, Parents, and Community Members,
I hope the changing of seasons finds all of you well and enjoying the beautiful fall weather. Fall Activities are in full swing and Winter Activities will be right around the corner. I hope to continue seeing
many of you supporting our kids in all the activities we have going on!
Our MAP testing process has finished up with success this last month. With MAP we can assess students progress up to 3 times a year. At Pender Jr-Sr High we assess Math, Science, Language, and Reading.
It is a progressive test that helps to determine a student’s grade level ability based on a variety of ques-­‐
tions that progress as you move through the testing module.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up soon on Wednesday, October 22 from 3:00-9:00 p.m. I
hope this new time frame gives you and your child the opportunity to come in and visit with the teachers.
So many good things come from face to face interactions between teachers and parents that it will only
improve the educational experience of your child. Take the time to come in and discuss grades, behaviors,
and MAP scores with their teachers. As always, feel free to contact your child’s teachers any time you have a question.
Along with my day-to-day activities here in the building I too have been doing things to make myself
a more effective administrator. I continue to take grad classes, this semester in School Law and School
Community Relations. I have also been able to go to a few conferences that deal with classroom management strategies, MAP testing, and School Improvement. I will continue to look for ways for my staff and me
to better ourselves in the roles that we serve here in the district.
I encourage you all to call or email with questions if you have them. Please continue to introduce
yourselves at the school functions or out in the community. It has been a wonderful start to the school
year and I look forward to working with all of you as this year progresses.

Hello Pendragon Families!
Well its official ~ Happy Fall! The weather is cooling off and our hectic summer schedules are slowing a bit
(hopefully). Things are however in full swing here in the elementary school! The students have just completed
Aims Web testing, MAP testing, and Guided Reading benchmarking. We are off to a WONDERFUL start!
Homecoming is right around the corner! In the elementary we plan to celebrate and participate each and every
day! Monday is twin/look-alike day. Tuesday is super hero/Disney character day. Wednesday is favorite sports
player/cheerleader day. Thursday is traitor day (dress like an opponent). Friday, as always, is spirit day! Dress in
red and white and help cheer the Pendragons on to victory! Student council will have awards for the “best dressed” and there will be a Principal’s Spirit Award each day! Look for fun Homecoming 2014 pictures to appear on our Facebook/Twitter pages each day! GO BIG RED!
The Pender Public Schools PTO is off and running! The start-up committee met in late September. The first order
of business was developing a mission statement for the organization. The mission statement is: The Pender Public
Schools PTO is organized for the purpose of supporting the education of children in the Pender Public Schools by
fostering relationships among the school, parents and teachers. A founding board of directors was established as
well as a date for the first official meeting. Please make plans to attend the first official Pender Public Schools PTO
meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the lunchroom. It is exciting to see such a motivated,
enthusiastic group of parents ready to make a difference in the education of our children!
With the end of the first quarter of school rapidly approaching, your thoughts may be turning to your child’s report card. Remember that Pender Elementary has moved to a Standards-Based Grading & Reporting (SBGR) system.
The primary goal of SBGR is to better communicate specifically and clearly what each student knows and is able to
do according to state/district content standards. SBGR removes extraneous factors (group work, effort, attitude,
attendance) and solely focuses on proficiency. We will continue to provide parents with information regarding
SBGR. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
If you haven’t already, call the office and sign up the Elementary eNews electronic weekly newsletter. It is full of
information from each teacher as well as weekly reminders and afterschool program schedules. We also continue
to seek donations for our Backpack Food Program. We are currently packing 40 bags of food each week to send
home with our students. If you would like additional information about how you can help, please contact the
school office. Look for more information in this newsletter regarding National School Lunch Week Oct. 13-17th.
As you can tell, we have a lot of exciting things happening at Pender Elementary School! If you ever have any

Register for a barcode!
Before you attend a college fair or EPP, visit NebraskaCollegeFairs.org to register for a barcode. Take the barcode to the
event and college reps will scan it to retrieve your demographic information.
Attend a Financial Aid Program and you may win a $500 scholarship!
If you’re a high school junior or senior – and if you attend an EducationQuest Financial Aid Program (FAP) before February 1,
2015 - you’ll earn a chance to win one of three $500 scholarships! The Financial Aid Program is scheduled for Wednesday,
October 29 in the Distance Learning Lab at the High School.
Seniors…have you visited your top colleges?
If you haven’t done so already, visit your top colleges soon to narrow your choices. Application deadlines will start hitting later
this fall. Follow these tips for a successful visit:
Contact the admissions office at least two weeks in advance to schedule your visit. Make appointments with an admissions
representative, financial aid counselor, and a faculty member in the area of study that interests you.
Check out the college website before your visit. Most college sites have a section for prospective students. You might even be
able to schedule your campus visit online.
Visit while school is in session. You won’t get the true flavor during breaks or finals week.
Ask LOTS of questions.
Winning the scholarship game
Follow these tips to increase your chances of earning scholarships:
Don’t pay for scholarship searches! Use free search sites including ScholarshipQuest at EducationQuest.org where you’ll find over 2,000 state and local awards. Scholarship resources are also available through your school counselor’s office and at Edu-­
cationQuest offices in Kearney, Lincoln and Omaha.
Focus on college-based and local scholarships. You’re more likely to earn them over large national awards.
Continually update your activities, honors and volunteer or paid jobs using the Activities Resume at EducationQuest.org.
Earn the best possible ACT/SAT scores by taking the exams in the spring of your junior year and again in the fall of your senior
year.
Use quality references such as a teacher, coach or counselor. Encourage them to write specific examples of your leadership
skills. Give them advance notice and a specific deadline.
Pay close attention to grammar and spelling. Ask at least two people to proofread your application.
On Friday, September 19th the fifth grade class attended the
Missouri River Outdoor Expo, hosted by Ponca State Park (a
school day invitational). Area 5th graders were invited to experience this prelude to the weekend, which offers over 45 interactive outdoor activities for kids! There were approximately
30 schools that attended with over 1000 students. The Pender
fifth grade class was engaged in activities that involved turkeys,
trapping, animal calls, and turtles. The combined total attendance for Friday and Saturday was over 50,000 people; making
this the largest outdoor expo in the Midwest. Thank you to Rod
Heise and Janet Trimble for coming along to help make this day
a success.
The National Mentoring Partnership is joining the Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge to expand the reach and presence of this successful campaign
to connect youth with caring adult mentors. MENTOR’s recent report, The Mentoring Effect, found through a nationally representative survey of
young adults ages 18-21 that mentoring is linked to improved academic,
social and economic prospects. As just one example, at-risk young adults
surveyed who had a mentor while they were growing up were 55% more
likely to be enrolled in college than those who did not have a mentor.
These benefits to youth ultimately strengthen our communities and our
nation.
The report also found that one in three young people will grow up without
having a mentor.
By connecting young people with caring adults we provide them with a powerful asset to achieve success in all aspects of their lives,” said David Shapiro, CEO of MENTOR. “Coaches are mentors both on and off the field and they are uniquely positioned to motivate fans to become mentors. We’re grateful for the commitment of those involved and the energy brought by the Big 12 support and new coaches joining the challenge.”
“Students in elementary, middle and high school represent our next generation of college students, athletes and leaders, and mentoring prepares them for excellence, effort and achievement on campus,” said Bob Bowlsby, Big 12 Conference Commissioner. “The Coaches’ Mentoring
Challenge is an opportunity for our teams and their fans to support youth through mentoring and strengthen our connection to the communities
our universities call home.”
The Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge is an annual campaign to connect more youth to mentors that began as a friendly challenge to fans by
Coach Tom Osborne at the University of Nebraska and Coach Bill Snyder at Kansas State in 2008. Within six years, coaches from Big 12 and
Big Ten schools in Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota joined the challenge and rallied nearly 9,000 new volunteers in 2013.
Each coach teams up with one of MENTOR’s affiliate Mentoring Partnerships or another nonprofit partner that provides a way for fans to sign up
to become a mentor and matches them to a local mentoring program. For additional information on how to become a mentor for the Pender
