HE bustling metropolis of Brisbane was the perfect place to start our Australian adventure – as the state capital of Queensland, it has loads of exciting things to see and do. To gather our bearings we had pre-booked a city tour which uncovered all the main sights and attractions, from lush green parks and historical buildings to great nightlife, amazing restaurants and bustling markets. This was an ideal introduction to Brisbane’s city life and our friendly guide helped us with tips for eating out too. During our stay we paid a visit to Australia Zoo, home to Australia’s crocodiles, snakes and of course – koalas! This was an amazing FLIGHT PATH: A hot-air balloon is the best way to see the dawn; a koala Pictures: Tourism Australia experience and a great day out, which I would highly recommend. Next we travelled up the coast to Cairns, where we would get the chance to experience diving and snorkelling on the magnificent Great Barrier Reef. I was really looking forward to this part of the trip and couldn’t wait to get out into the turquoise water. With vast stretches of pristine beaches, unspoiled tropical rainforest and clear blue sea it really was just like paradise. Setting off early on board a catamaran for a full day’s exploration, we were given an introductory diving course with an experienced instructor and a team of professionals on hand. Once we had completed our safety checks, Travel facts 1.Prem ier Travel can offer a 12-night Queensland holiday from £1,599pp including return international flights from London to Brisbane, internal flights from Brisbane to Cairns , return transfers and hotel accommodation throughout . 2.This offer is based on two adults sharing and is valid for travel during May 2016 (many alternative dates and accommodation also availab le). Diving down into the Great Barrier Reef was absolutely incredible. I was amazed by the colours which glow underwater, with schools of tropical fish swimming past the vibrant corals which line the sea bed. I spotted sea cucumbers, clown fish and even a stingray a few metres away – it was even better than it looks on TV! The following day we set our alarms just before 3am and drove a short distance to a hot air balloon launch site, as one of the top attractions in Cairns is watching the sunrise from the air. Next it was off to Port Douglas, a trendy resort town just over 40 miles north of Cairns. Known for its beautiful beaches and reputation for adventure, it is perfect for adrenalin junkies. During our stay we experienced the excitement of white water rafting (ideal for thrill-seekers), enjoyed a scenic train journey to Kuranda to visit an Aboriginal tribe, and spent a few days soaking up the sun at the famous Four Mile Beach, which is fringed with white sand and exotic palm trees. This combination of adventure and relaxation was a brilliant way to see the best of Port Douglas, and a great addition to any Queensland itinerary. Our final stop was a few nights in Tangalooma, a resort and former whaling station on the west side of Moreton Island National Park (just 75 minutes by Catamaran from Brisbane). With crystal clear lakes and lagoons with pristine beaches to explore, we had great fun trying ‘sand tobogganing’ on the famous sand dunes and taking in the stunning scenery all around, while learning more about the dolphins who live at the resort. The Tangalooma Marine Education & Conservation Centre works to protect the animals in residence here and, every evening at sunset, a pod of local bottlenose dolphins swim up to the beach to be fed by the guests. I was lucky enough to have a go at feeding the dolphins myself by hand –without doubt one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had, and a brilliant end to our amazing trip.
