Transconnect Overview
PSP Products, Inc. has developed a unique generator transfer switch like no other on the
market. Our patented technology greatly reduces install time, goes outside at the meter, and
can be customized to fit your needs.
Some of our features include:
I.
II
Retro fit version fits behind the meter for existing homes and small commercial, up
to 48kW loads.
Comes in three configurations:
•
semi automatic – manual start/stop
•
fully automatic start/stop
IV. Monitors generator power and stops power flow from generator if power falls below
105 Volts or exceeds 135 Volts on either leg, and will not transfer an unbalanced
load.
V. All models automatically transfer back to line power.
VI. Powers customer’s entire service distribution panel.
VII. Models available with plug for portable generator hook up.
VIII.Records power outages and errors.
IX. Test switch to exercise the system, reset button, and diagnostic lights.
X. Redundant controls and safety features to insure reliable and proper operation.
XI. Generator maintenance cycle on auto start versions.
XII. Whole house surge protection available on new meter base and modular versions.
XIII.
Internal electrical interlocks allow only one power source (utility company or generator)
to supply power to main service panel.
XIV.A built-in .2-3 minute time delay allows voltage monitoring of either power source
before the transfer occurs.
XV. Built-in surge protection is available on certain units.

Circuit Interrupter
The PSP Transconnect Interrupter is a relay board designed to disconnect loads from the main electric panel
that would otherwise overload a connected generator. The Interrupter should be used in any fully
automatic application where the connected generator does not have the capacity to carry the entire,
connected load. Loads such as electric hot water heaters, heat pumps, air conditioning systems, water
pumps or any devices that are not important to a homeowner to have in operation during a power outage,
can be safely taken off line. This allows the TransConnect to automatically operate a generator that is not
large enough to carry the entire home on its own.
Installation is simple. The Interrupter is mounted next to the existing electric panel and wires are rerouted to
the relay box from their current location in the electric panel. Short jumper wires are then installed
between each relay and the breaker in the main electric panel that services that circuit.
Some models have room to add additional relays in the field for future upgrades. All units are ARL listed
and approved to meet all safety standards.
Relays:
DPDT
24V DC coil voltage
Contacts are rated to 30 or 50 Amp, 240V continuous ratings
Note: TransConnect or other control device must have Form C contacts with a 2 Amp at 30 Volts maximum rating to operate relays.

Note: AC or Heat Pump interrupt only: This can be done by routing the Thermostat wire through the “Interrupt” connections on the
TransConnect control board. When the generator is engaged, the circuit is broken and the thermostat will be rendered inoperative so the
AC or Heat Pump cannot turn on. This method avoids having to purchase an additional relay panel such as those listed above.
Install time depends on the distance between the TransConnect and the thermostat in the home.
Transconnect Operations
The Transconnect Generator Transfer Switch has built in safety features that prevent generator
back feed into the utility power system. The attached diagrams are intended to explain the
operational flow of electricity in Normal and Emergency conditions.
Normal Operation
When utility power is present, the normal flow of electricity is through the meter as usual. As the
power leaves the meter, it is diverted through a Latching Relay. The Latching Relay is in a closed
position to allow power to flow through from the utility to the panel inside the home. An optional
Service Disconnect Breaker is available if required by local codes. Voltage Sensor # 1on the
Control Board continually monitors the power on the utility side of the meter. The Control Board
will report problems with the Utility voltage but it will not disconnect utility power under this
type of condition. If a total blackout occurs, the Voltage Sensor # 1will respond by beginning
the auto start sequence of an attached stationary generator or it will wait and watch for a
portable generator to be hooked up.
Emergency Operation
Once a blackout condition is confirmed, the Control Board starts the generator or begins to
“watch” for a generator to be connected. Voltage Sensor # 3 is the main control component to
determine when generator power is present and has stabilized. The transfer switch will not
switch to generator power if it does not see 105V to 135V on each leg measured to neutral. The
Control Circuit for the Latching Relay energizes the latch, which locks the relay into an “off” or
open position. Sensor # 4 verifies the position of the Latching Relay. The Control Circuit(s) for
the Generator Relays are then energized to close these normally open relays. Voltage Sensor #
2 confirms power flow through the relays. Power is now supplied to the house without feed back
of power into the utility system. Zero voltage is verified at Voltage Sensor # 1.
When power is restored by the utility, Voltage Sensor # 1 waits a predetermined period of time
to confirm that the power is truly restored and constant. If for any reason the utility power is not
stable (such as 120V on one leg and 95V on the other); the TransConnect unit will not switch back
to utility power. The Generator Relays are disengaged when any utility voltage is restored by
Voltage Sensor # 1 releasing the Independent Control Relays. No Voltage can be present as
confirmed by Voltage Sensor # 2 before the Latching Relay is returned to a closed position.
Closing the Latching Relay reconnects utility power to the house. This is verified by Sensor # 4.
Stationary generators are automatically shut down. Portable generators are left running at an idle
and require manual shutdown.
Switch off breakers in the panel box to shed load to reduce usage below the generator’s rating.
Move the Portable Generator into position near the service entrance. (Not applicable if using a
stationary generator) Plug the generator into the TransConnect Transfer Switch. (Not applicable if
using a stationary generator) Start the Generator. (The TransConnect automatically switches to
generator and then switches back when utility is restored) Shutdown the Generator after
utility power is restored. Return the generator and the panel to normal.
