PRICELESS WINTER EDITION FOURTEEN FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2016 Onesie Time! Top: Wonderful day, onesie suits - way to go! Pic - Chris Hocking. Left: Spring boarding in the Park - yahoo! Pic - Elle @ Top Shots. • Lotte and the kids - happy little Snow Clubbers! Pic - Jiri @ Top FROM THE CEO The Crash Reel E very Monday morning the leadership team at RMB meet to go over the last week and drill down on how the mountain ‘performed,’ visitation trends, events and issues that may have arisen. Of the bank of statistics and figures reviewed, some of the more interesting relate to that of Ski Patrol call outs and mountain incidents. Thankfully, most, in fact, the majority of incidents are not serious, but rather relate to a bump, a tweak, a sprain, or the patient is ‘tired’ or ‘lost’ and just needs a little help. The Falls Creek Ski Patrol team are an amazing asset to the resort and like many such services are taken for granted until needed. When they are ‘needed’ the highly experienced team come into their own. All the training they do and the constant learning applied on the job has to be seen to be believed. It never stops. I frequently drop in to the Ski Patrol ‘Alex Warrender Memorial Ski Patrol’ base at the top of Monkey Bar and am always amazed at the active learning being undertaken. There is always something, or someone on the floor being attended to (simulated), or equipment being re-packed, or the volunteers being quizzed by the senior patrollers about what equipment is where in the Patrol ‘stashes’ spread right across the mountain, resort maps are constantly being scoured over, there’s the buzz of ‘two-way’ traffic and chatter about what is happening on the hill… it is constant. So too is the drying of gloves, buffs and jackets around the log fire! The gratitude and thanks we constantly receive from ‘happy customers’ who have experienced their professionalism and tremendous service hits my email inbox regularly. Then there are the requests for details on how to donate to the team as a ‘thank-you.’ This is extremely gratifying and greatly appreciated by the crew as these funds go directly towards equipment purchases and training. The team are on the hill before most people are out of bed, compiling weather reports, snow depth assessments, reviewing the status of runs pre-opening, then sweeping the resort at close. Many are members of other volunteer agencies and also attend call outs ‘out of hours.’ What’s more, they do this in Our Ski Patrol are a vital group and perform a fantastic role. Pic - Elle @ Top Shots. any and all weather conditions, snow, sleet, powder, rain, hail or shine, visibility or zero visibility… so next time you see the guys on the hill, be thankful you don’t need them, but be appreciative that if you do, you’re in the best hands on any mountain in Australia! Congratulations to all the team who passed their exams in Thredbo last week. Keep up the great work. Of course a wrap for the Ski Patrol crew wouldn’t be complete with a huge thanks to the Doctors at the Falls Creek Medical Centre too, who close the loop on the more serious or challenging circumstances. Thanks Doc’s! Now, put on some sun block, slap on a helmet, some sunnies or goggles and get out there and enjoy the spring skiing! • Stuart Smythe, CEO Falls Creek Resort Management Be part of the team! If you hadn’t noticed, our Park Crew have bulked up the past week with all of the digging they have done. Come Friday night, and we were ‘blessed’ with some delightful Spring snow (or glue) coupled with some hefty winds overnight, meaning the poor Park guys were faced with about 40cm+ of fresh wet powder to dig out of all of the berm before we could even think about course setting. Luckily with the stamina of our crew, and the luck of having snow and not rain (like originally reported), the Bandwagon Banked Slalom was back on. The wind died down and the fog cleared to actually be not a bad day in the end. The course came up great and presented to be heaps of fun for the competitors! We had 51 competitors in the end, amongst them our favourite Falls Creek 2010 Vancouver Olympian Mr Scotty James. (Another favourite Olympian, Britt Cox was winning bumps comps in NSW). The times were tight… with the local legends even giving our Olympian legend a run for his money (although he still came out on top!). The course was more challenging than last year’s, sticking to the more traditional Banked Slalom course made of handmade features and natural terrain, rather than anything groomer-built. A big shout out to everyone who came out and got involved on the day - especially our resident legends Toby and Chris for filming and our friend Scott Robbins for taking some epic shots! Results from the day were as follows: Male Open Ski 1st - Tom Costa 2nd - Heath Matheson 3rd - Bumsti Rachiller Male Open Snowboard 1st - Scotty James 2nd - Jeremy Burns 3rd - Keiran McLaughlin Female Open Snowboard 1st - Danii Forde 2nd - Billie Oram 3rd - Charlotte Rookes Grom Male Ski 1st - Jed Stanton 2nd - Mitch Cook 3rd - Tom Breen Snow Holiday Hours Everyday 1:00pm - 4:00pm Closed Mondays. Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK Winter 2016 Edition FOURTEEN DISABLED WINTERSPORT AUSTRALIA The Royal Talbot Camp L ast weekend Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre joined DWA at Falls Creek as part of their recreation program. Over the years, this has proven to be a great camp with great people and last weekend was no different with seven wonderful people from Royal Talbot joining us. Royal Talbot specialises in the rehabilitation of people that have suffered Spinal Cord Injuries. This rehabilitation is designed to help these people regain as much independence as possible, and to help them learn how to live day to day life with their injuries. The next step, once people have gotten back to their homes and have adjusted to their new way to life, is finding some adaptive sporting activities that they would like to do and can enjoy being involved in. This is where DWA comes in. Lots of these people are very surprised to find that they may still be able to ski after sustaining such a life changing injury, and much to their delight, there is plenty that people with disabilities can do on snow! On this Talbot camp we had four return skiers and three newbies. It’s good to get a mix in abilities and have new and experienced skiers on the camps. It’s also a great social occasion as people come from all over Victoria and NSW to enjoy sit skiing and share their experiences. Glen Clarke came down from Kempsey in NSW. It is about a 12 hr drive for him to get down to Falls Creek and because has done it two years in a row now we think he must reckon it’s worth it! Glen is one of the most positive and easy going blokes that we’ve come across at DWA - always smiling and happy to try anything. Skiing in a Bi Ski he was doing laps of Wombats un-assisted by the end of the weekend - much to the delight of the guides that he was skiing with. Our reward is always the satisfaction of seeing the people that we’re skiing with progress so well. Glen’s two guides, Ross and Robbo, did a great job this weekend. One of the highlights of the weekend was our final lap down Wombats Ramble on the Sunday. All of the skiers grouped up at the top of the Drovers Dream lift for a photo. Then had one last group lap down to the bottom of the hill, it was awesome seeing everyone skiing along together and getting competitive with their skiing too. We’re already looking forward to the next Talbot camp and can’t wait to see who comes up next year. Looking forward this weekend we have the Spina Bifida Foundation camp. This is another organisation that we at DWA have been collaborating with for a long time and they will be bringing up eight of their members for the annual ski camp. This one is the second last camp for the year - it’s all coming to an end too quickly! Hooray for spring skiing and hero snow. • Tom Ridley The Royal Talbot group and guides - all lined up for the last run down Wombats. Pic - Karen Kleinitz. With Much to Enjoy L ocal residents are fortunate to live in this fascinating environment - surrounded by hills and the everchanging bush. We are also able to experience the coming and going of the four seasons. Summer for the fantastic host of outdoor pursuits (too many to list here); autumn for the onset of the cool and surrounded by exotic colours; winter we love for its influx of wonderful visitors and our opportunity to enjoy the wonders of the high plains under a mantle of snow; and then spring. Looking around there is a plethora of fabulous colour in the blossoms adorning the trees and the wattle!!! How good is it - and no wonder it was chosen as our national colour (with green, representing the Golden Wattle). One option to appreciate the area is to get out on a pair of skinny skis and explore. Falls Creek Nordic Hire at Windy Corner can help with this. Then we have the folk who prefer to stay in the resort - whether they be die-hard downhillers or simply valued first-time visitors, there is still plenty to do to produce that holiday in the snow you dreamed of. And the potential for fresh falls will make it all that little bit better. Spring skiing is a good time. On the back of your handy ‘less than’ pocket sized trail map is a list of the extra activities that will make your holiday much, much more than just skiing or boarding - no matter how good it is! (And everyone should have the Trail Map in their pocket). Once you have decided to take advantage of one or more of the activities, you may make a booking by phoning the toll free number, 1800 204 424, or by speaking with any of the staff in either of the Falls Creek Sport shops - one in the QT complex at the base of Falls Express chairlift, and the other in the Village Bowl, beside the Eagle Chairlift. Snowmobile Tours The opportunity to ride you own snowmobile does not come along that often. 20% Off tours during spring is a certain way to get you out on the slopes of Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains out towards Mt McKay. Now that the snow is here get out and enjoy an exciting snowmobile tour as part of your holiday. You can either ride your own machine (you must have a valid, current drivers licence) or you can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on the back with a competent guide. The snow, the scenery, the fresh air - you definitely ain’t gonna get in Collins Street. • The Snowmobile team delight in showing visitors the scenes of the high plains. Do it! Pic Elle @ Top Shots. Back Country Tours When the snow gets deep, and the slopes are steep, that’s the time to call Steve Lee and take advantage of one of his ripper back country tours. As you will know, Steve represented Australia at the Olympics three times. He also competed in World Cup, winning the Super G in Japan. Steve, with his talented side-kick, Bond, aaah Steve Bond, will take you skiing in places you thought no-one should go - like the south face of Mt McKay - and it’s all here in Falls Creek. • A new concept for 2016! “Share Plate Heaven” (TripAdvisor 2016) • Bar & Restaurant • Bruschetta ,garlic bread, Arancini balls, Croquette, crumbed Anchovy, stuffed Olives, Pork Ribs, sous vide Sirloin, house-made Gnocchi, Lamb Rack, half Chicken in Vodka Dill sauce, plenty of sides and desserts of the day! Australian winters are unpredictable and often go as quickly as they come. Winters Down Under don’t seem to conform to the months that our calendars prescribe for them, but hey…if we still have snow in September then we can’t be complaining. As we put our feet up and look back over the crazy month that was August, it’s tempting to stash away our big jackets and summer wax our skis. Races like the Kangaroo Hoppet morph from a season-long goal to photo album on title on Facebook and we can’t help but to embrace the new arrival of spring for all that it offers us. However this year with good snow-cover throughout the first week of September it appears we have to press pause on our pack-up, for our winter is far A fresh new project in the village bowl real food fuelling the mind & body dishing up breakfast lunch & dinner all day every day our diverse menu delivers a treat for the senses healthy snacks - specialty coffee organic & caffeine free tea regional craft beer & cider on tap gourmet produce store stocking the essentials see us on facebook or phone 03 5758 3222 Located in The Village Bowl below Altitude Apartments. Cross-country spring skiing in Australia is something that is often not appreciated enough. Around September, when the snow hardens with a crust, skiing out of the Nordic Bowl and into surrounding National Park can offer some of the best adventures of the season. The best part is (if the conditions are right) that you are not confined to a trail and don’t need to worry about grooming as the crust provides a hard enough surface to skate on. It is a time of year where you can pack some lunch, enjoy the sunshine and head out for hours of exploring. The national team seized the spring skiing opportunities on their 2015 spring camp with snow conditions better than July and early August. The team headed out on daily long skis around the Pretty Valley trails, Spion Kopje and Bogong areas and this year we encourage you to do the same. Some tips include, heading out early to get the firmest crust, skiing in a group so that (if you head off trails) you can navigate a little better and of course be inquisitive! Asking about where to head out is the most ideal way to ensure you’re skiing on the best part of the mountain. Different times of the year mean that different areas are better than others so make sure you’re on the ball and enjoying the best of what Falls Creek has to offer. Phil Bellingham, leading at the pack in the Hoppet, will head overseas to race World Championships and U23 Championships this summer. Pic - Ken Bell. Enquire about where to ski and pick up a trail map in Windy Corner Ski Hire. As we delve further into September, minimal snow may mean you need to pack some hiking boots but the snow sticks around far longer than you think. Get rid of those ‘spring means poor snow’ ideas and get out there in the spring sunshine… you won’t regret it. • Save The Date The Annual National Team Cocktail Night is fast approaching on the 7th of October. Following the end of a successful race season the team turns their attention to the Northern Hemisphere winter and their respective competitions. This year AUSXC will be sending teams to the World Championships in Lahti, Finland and World Junior/U23 Championships Utah, USA. It is a jam-packed race calendar for these athletes and many are working hard as we speak to raise funds to get themselves over there. As skiing is not a heavily funded sport, the team relies on fundraising to subsidise costs associated with accommodation, airfares, wax support, uniforms and much more. By attending the cocktail night you can help out these hardworking athletes. Ticketing information will be available on the AUSXC website and if you are willing to donate any auction items for the loud or silent auction please email stella.ajani@gmail.com. Following the upcoming FIS races in New Zealand for Kat Paul, this will mark the end of the Australian race season for these two successful athletes. ACOs are employees trained as firstresponders to provide lifesaving emergency care. They help make a difference by working alongside paramedics and assisting paramedics treat and transport sick and injured people. Mount Beauty ACO Team Leader Jen Boote became an ACO three years ago and said ACOs played an important role in supporting Ambulance Victoria’s response in rural and regional Victoria. “I’d always wanted to be a nurse and was looking to work locally when someone told me there were these people called ‘ACOs’ who assisted paramedics in the work they do,” Ms Boote recalled. “It’s ended up being so much better than I even thought it would be at the time. My favourite part is being there to reassure people and holding their hand in their time of need.” “I think there’s an intrinsic part of all of us who care about people, and this role gives you the opportunity to represent the community, help where you can and back up paramedics in the role that they do” she added. Ms Boote, who is a mother and a photographer, said the role of an ACO was flexible to support her work and life balance. “ACOs are members of our community, have a genuine community spirit, and an interest in patient care. ACOs may be employed, selfemployed, not working or semi-retired,” Ms Boote said. “While paramedics make up the bulk of Ambulance Victoria’s personnel, there are many ways that you can get involved and perhaps even explore a new career. Being at the foothills of the mountains, there’s a lot more diversity to our work than some other country towns. We have snow and bush tracks so there’s skiers, cyclists and motorbikes, or we might be assisting people who are unwell or injured at home” Jen continued. “We need community members to put their hands up to be an ACO now.
