I
t was probably one of the busiest days racing MPR has
had yet when last Saturday we had 12 runners on 5
tracks around the country, and this Bank Holiday
weekend looks set to be equally as action packed.
There were some great performances last weekend with
Tatlisu coming 3/16 and Rita’s Boy 2/8, with Fattsota
putting in an 8 length career best taking his owners to the
winners enclosure.
Hail the Hero takes his chance
in the 2,000 Guineas.
We weren't planning on running Hail the Hero in
the 2,000 Guineas following his below par run in the Craven,
but a secretarial error and a wide open Guineas has persuaded
us to let him take his chance. The reward for finishing in the
places was just too great, too great to ignore, he will be ridden
by Danny Tudhope and has a good draw in the middle of the
track in stall 9. This will be David O’Meara's first classic runner
and Middleham Park Racing's third runner with Lilys Angel
finishing 6th and Toormore finishing 7th in recent Guineas.

2yo’s Hit the Ground Running!
It has been a great start to the season this year as MPR’s 2
yo’s got off to a flying start with Great Page throwing down
the gauntlet in style and raising the bar for all. As we move
into May and the weather warms up we should be seeing a
lot of 2 yo action as the early sorts get going.
Recent Winners
Shalabina 18th April Nottingham
Shalabina won nicely at Nottingham to
collect our first £10,000 Yearling Bonus of 2015
and the best part of £3,000 prize money with a
nail biting finish over the 10 furlong trip. Given
a strong ride from David Nolan Shalabina idled
in front but got the verdict in a photo finish.
We will most likely see her run next at the York
May meeting and David Nolan thinks she will

Great Page 20th April Windsor
We are almost certainly biased but we believe
this filly, in winning the Fillies’ auction Plus 10
race at Windsor just about put up the
performance of the season so far by a 2yo debutante. She slightly missed the break but was soon
on the heels of the leading fillies, coming around the slight bend Sean
angled her out and asked her to quicken, and my goodness did she. She
put the race to bed in a matter of strides and pulled clear from the rest of
the pack. She seemed to know her job very well and is a very intelligent
filly. Attheraces’ Matt Chapman was very impressed, labelling her as a
Royal Ascot filly with all the team at Richard Hannon’s being of a similar
opinion. We hope they are all right.

Fattsota recorded a career best when making all at Ripon in the
£25,000 handicap over 12 furlongs. Danny got Fattsota to the lead
early in a race which looked beforehand to be lacking obvious horses
to take on Fattsota for the lead. Danny filled Fattsota up around the
bend and then put his rivals to the sword to stay clear of the field to
win by 8 lengths. The handicapper has now put Fattsota’s rating up to
103 so we will possibly head to the Chester May meeting next.

Under The Radar
This week we are under the radar with Monsea. He was unlucky last time out in
getting hampered whilst making his challenge up the hill at Beverley but looks
like he is ready to strike off his current mark next.
Just Junior
Junior was on target to race at Cheltenham however Nicky advised us that Junior's leg has filled up with fluid again whilst
trying to get him fit for the race. The vets report identified that his tendon injury would only get worse if we continued with
him so we have decided that now is the time to retire him. Abi who looks after all the horses at Glebe Farm has offered to get
Junior back sound again and look after him in his retirement. She adored him when he was at Glebe Farm a couple of
summer's ago and will keep him in a yard nearby and keep us up to date with what Junior is up to. Abi told us:
I am overwhelmed that I have been able to take Junior on as
my own horse, it is a dream come true for me, I can't believe
it's actually happening and I am full of excitement. He has
always been my favourite Middleham Park horse ever since I
experienced the Grand National with him, then whilst looking
after him one summer on his break I fell completely in love
with him. My plans for Junior so far are to let him recover and
have a break then to take him hunting this coming season
and let him enjoy himself a little.

Crafty Choice…….The Voice
A horse is a horse, of course, of course, and no one can talk to a horse, of course, unless, of course, the horse, of
course, is the famous Crafty Choice! (thank you for the quote Mr Ed!)
This week as well as chatting to people we thought we would see if any of our MPR four legged stars fancied a chat so
off we went to the Hannon’s to catch up with the lovely Crafty Choice.
Hello Middleham Park Racing!! My name is Crafty Choice and I am a
racehorse in training with Richard Hannon in Wiltshire. I am looked
after by my human 'mum' Fran, who is my number one fan and loves
me to bits!!! She also looked after my horse 'mum' Song of Passion
from whom she says I inherited my good looks, toughness and genuine
nature. Fran says I even suck my bottom lip like she used to!!!! Fran
used to call me Babypash as a yearling as I reminded her of Passion but
now says Crafty suits me much better after the way I sneaked up on

Having a ‘Crafty’ chill out!
Tom Hark on the line at Newmarket!!! My normal day starts
with my head lad Barty giving me my breakfast before I get my
stable mucked out and bedded up so I am nice and clean and
comfy for the day ahead. My usual rider is Parmar who is
another of my fan club. We get on really well. I do look forward
to my exercise and Fran says since I have won races I prance up
and down the yard rather than walk. Parmar will brush or
wash me down after exercise depending on the weather and
when the warm spring comes around we start going for a pick
of grass afterwards. I do love grass. I have some hay when I get
back to my stable to munch on through the day. At lunchtime
after we have all had our exercise, we have our lunch and then
have the afternoon nice and quiet to chill out and relax. Later in
the afternoon I have my stable tidied up and my hay and water
replenished and have a good brush tip to toe before I get my
supper. I do love my food!! Racing days I must admit are my
favourite days. I have my breakfast and wait for Fran to come
and get me ready to travel. She puts on my travel sheet and
boots and off to the lorry we go. We arrive at the races in

Plenty of time for me to relax after travelling before my race. If the weather is warm enough Fran will give me a lovely
shampoo and shower then she spruces me up and puts my quarter marks in and we leave for the pre parade ring half an
hour before my race. Now I have won quite a few times I get quite excited once my saddle is on and I see the jockeys come
into the paddock. I can't get out there quick enough!!! I do like to prance around the ring and look good for all my owners,

which Fran says I do but she is biased!!! I do love coming back to the winners
enclosure to all the attention and photos. After Fran takes me for a nice shower
afterwards and a good walk and drink to cool down. When I get home I will have a nice
warm bran mash waiting for me. The day after is my chilling day when Fran takes me for a
lead out and a long pick of grass. I do love grass!! ) At the end of last season we went on a
road trip to Paris. Fran was excited but it was another day at the races for me. Always exciting!! We travelled on the horse box through the tunnel apparently. I must admit to not
looking past my haynet and made the most of having the horse box all to myself!! I wasn't
to impressed with the French stable doors though as you
can't see out!! Fran says I'm nosey. France was fun and I came 4th
against the big boys!!! I look forward to getting to the racecourse this
year and seeing all my
'Crafty Crew'!!

Jamie Brownlow QIPCO Racemaker
A love of the sport and enthusiasm for sharing your knowledge with others
to enhance their race day experience are just a few of the prerequisites for
being a Racemaker. So we had a chat with MPR owner Jamie Brownlow who
is familiar to many and highly passionate about the sport to tell us about his
experience at Sandown last weekend.
25th April 2015 was the most fantastic day and I will never forget it, helping
out as a Racemaker for the jump finale at Sandown Park and AP McCoy’s last
day as a jump jockey. Race enthusiasts had come from many different parts of
the country, and also of course from Ireland. It was great to see young
children, boys and girls, the next generation watching the horses and racing at
Sandown. Watching the other jockeys riding against AP McCoy such as Richard
Johnson, Aiden Coleman, Leighton Aspell etc. was a fantastic opportunity and
a very positive one for the sport. I was there as a Qipco Racemaker. What is a
Racemaker? I hear you ask.
Well a Racemaker welcomes people entering the racetrack
and helps them with racing related questions and queries
such as how to put a bet on, explaining the importance and
colours of the silks or general questions of racing. Our role
is also to help give people a great racing experience, help
them to enjoy racing and to encourage them to come
again. A few people from MPR have done this in previous
years such as Dave Arthur and Klaudia Stokoe as well as a
few other people I know such as

Sell out crowd at Sandown
Billy Blakeman (Betracingnation), and Adam Webb (Ontheotherhoof) and now myself which is a great
experience. Back to the day, around the parade ring it was 4 deep and more, at some places, the stands
all around were packed to capacity. It was an amazing experience to see AP McCoy getting his 20th
champion title and the trophy that he will keep for good. There was a huge round of applause for the
champ and "THREE CHEERS FOR AP" rung out around the ring. Absolutely fantastic and a great atmosphere all day around the racetrack
with a sell out crowd of 18,000. I was very fortunate to witness a legend in the racing game being able to watch and see the great man
himself and some very good racing to top it off. I am also very proud to say to my friends "I was there". It was also great to meet up with
the Bishop Wulstan owners at Sandown and also have a catch up talking to Paul O'Brien and Harry
Whittington about the Bishop. Looks like the Bish will have a big holiday since he’s been on the go for a while.
I will be attending this weekend at Newmarket for 2000 and 1000 Guineas
meeting. Which Hail The Hero will be running in the 2000 Guineas. I'm
looking forward to that very much. If you are attending come and say
"Hello". I will be around and about the track in my blue jacket.
I would highly recommend being a Racemaker, all you have to do
is register on the QIPCO champion series website as a
volunteer Racemaker you can then also keep in touch and up to
date with their blogs, forthcoming events, competitions etc. For
race enthusiasts it’s a fantastic way to promote the sport to
people and encourage more to get involved.

This colt was bought at the Tattersalls Craven Sale by Nick Bradley in April 2015 and is to be trained by Richard
Fahey who has trained Middleham Park Racing plenty of winners over the last five years.
We have done well at the breeze ups in recent years with purchases such as Elusive Epona, Arcano Gold,
Henrytheaeroplane, Ventura Quest, Peter Mac, Edgar Balthazar and Fugleman all winning as 2yos.
Extensive study of previous breeze ups indicate that the breeze ups offer good value for money when compared to
the Yearling sales. Year on year the breeze ups produce Group horses and a lot of those horses produce impressive
breezes both visually and on the clock. Over two thirds of the good horses to come out of the sale record times in
the top 25% of the cohort, which suggests that the times of the breezes are as good an indicator as any with
regards which horses to buy from the sale.
This colt recorded a very good breeze, travelling off the rail, he has a very fast action and clearly takes after his dad
in that has plenty of pace and precocity. On the clock he recorded the 10th fastest time of the cohort. Of the
horses which were quicker than this colt, they fetched the following price tags £100,000, £200,000, £300,000,
£65,000, £160,000, £58,000, £85,000, £150,000, £57,000, and £350,000 so we felt that this colt offered tremendous value for a horse who has already shown that he can gallop.
Physically this colt has plenty of size and won't be just the type who will be best at 2. Like his dad he hasn't got the
best pair of front legs but we felt at the price we paid for him he was a good value but for a horse we know can
gallop.
His sire is freshman stallion Dream Ahead who stands at Ballylinch Stud in Ireland. We weren't able to secure any
of his progeny at Middleham Park Racing at the yearling sales but are pleased to add this colt to the ranks. The
mare has produced a Listed winner in the form of Caledonian Spring from just two runners so she knows how to
produce quick racehorses.
We would imagine this colt will debut over 6 furlongs towards the end of May given a clear run and will be the
type who we will aim to get to Royal Ascot.

Talking Ownership
This week we catch up with Keith Denham
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your family and pets.
It’s a pleasure to live in a little village called Hipperholme, which is near Halifax, with Daphne my wife of 46 years. I
retired 18 years ago from my Structural Steel business that I started in 1973 and love every single day of retirement.
I am the proud father of two sons, the eldest Mark now runs the family business and Tony who will be known to
most of you from the stable visits and parade rings. I have 2 grandchildren Tom and James (who both love racing), 2
step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. An older brother, sister and 2 lovely daughters in law complete
the immediate family. We spend too much time out of the country to have pets now but previously had a lassie
collie called Pepper and a cat called Whisky.
Where is your favourite holiday destination?

I am a strong believer in visiting as many countries and seeing as many incredible sights as possible in my lifetime
and the long retirement has let me achieve it. My favourite would include China, Thailand, The Antarctic, any part of the USA but in particular
Las Vegas and Florida. The places we visit most are Ventura Country Club in Florida and Balaia Golf Village in the Algarve.
Apart from racing what other hobbies do you have?
Love all sport and have in my time played Rugby Union, Soccer, Golf, Snooker, Pool and Darts, mostly confined to watching now but that’s still
fun. I enjoy concerts and musical theatre in particular Les Miserables which I have seen 12 times in three different countries it`s not easy to
understand in Russian. My favourite night out is a good restaurant, I love all food and drink to which my waistline attests.
Where did your interest in racing originate and when did you first become an owner with MPR?
In 1988 I joined what I believed to be one of the first syndicates available to the general public called The
British Racing and Thoroughbred Associations with horses trained by Toby Balding. Directors in the club
included Henry Kelly and Clement Freud (anyone remember them). Our best day out was the1989 Grand
National day, when Toby had 3 winners at 28/1,10/1 and 4/1. I joined MPR in 2011, my first purchase being
Our Boy Jack.
Why did you decide on becoming an owner?
I like to get involved with the sports that interest me and as no one seemed keen to employ a 17 stone
jockey, even though I had considerable experience as a youngster on Blackpool beach ( I think the donkeys
name was Bella) coupled with the fact that I know nothing about training, being an owner seemed the best
way forward.

Which horses do you own shares in at MPR?
I have to confess to having a large portfolio of shares with MPR, the most notable ones being Toormore,
G Force, Penitent, Kool Kompany, Sandiva, Crafty Choice, Ventura Mist, Open Eagle, Lexington Times,
Count Montecristo and Mad Moose. It was impossible to get MAD with MOOSE even when he had one of
his hamlet moments.
What has been one your favourite racing moments?
Favourite moments have been many, unfortunately I missed the two which would have topped the list
being the Group 1 wins of Toormore and G Force. Magic moments I did see include Kool Kompany winning
the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin in France, Sandiva winning a listed race at Naas, Penitent at Doncaster in his
first run for MPR winning a listed race and the achievements of Ventura Mist.

What are your favourite films & TV shows?
Favourite films would be 12 Angry Men, Where Eagles Dare, Taken and anything with a clever plot
or involving a court case. On TV I enjoy quiz shows, talent shows and all the classic comedy shows
like Only Fools and Horses, Rising Damp, Dads Army, Yes Prime Minister etc.
What would you say to prospective owners about becoming an owner ?
You gotta be in it to win it, have a go at whatever level you feel comfortable with. MPR have given
me the opportunity to be an owner in Dubai, Hong Kong, Turkey, France, Ireland and all the top
courses in the UK.
