Whether you are processing pudding, skin cream, intravenous emulsions or one of thousands of other products, we have the equipment to improve your product. The APV Homogenizer Division is ready to meet the challenges facing us in this exciting, technologically advanced world and we look forward to serving you. Homogenization and Applications • Reduced to basics, homogenization is the process of emulsifying one liquid into another or uniformly dispersing solid particles throughout a liquid. This is accomplished by pumping the product under pressure through a small, adjustable gap causing turbulence, cavitation and intense mixing. APV homogenizers have revolutionized countless processes, facilitating the development of new products and enhancing many others. • Product stability, uniformity, consistency, viscosity, absorbency, shelf life, reaction time, and improved flavor and color are some of the benefits that have been achieved through homogenization. APV homogenizers are designed and manufactured for research, pilot plant and production applications. Models are available with operating pressures up to 21,750 psi (1,500 bar) and capacities up to 14,000 gph (52,900 1ph). In the emerging field of biotechnology, cell disruption is a major application for high pressure homogenization. Many cells contain valuable intracellular products, such as enzymes and proteins. High pressure homogenization ruptures the cell wall, allowing the intracellular products to be harvested. The APV Homogenizer Division offers a wide variety of valves designed for different applications. Our specialists will custom engineer a homogenizer, utilizing the optimum design and materials for your specific application. Plug Valve is normally used as a single-stage valve and as the first stage of a two-stage assembly for flow rates up to 2,500 gph (9,500 1ph). For most products a single stage homogenizing valve assembly is recommended. However, when lower homogenizing pressures are used, a two-stage valve configuration can provide some advantages (i.e., lower viscosity and higher heat stability). TC Valve has tungsten carbide inserts and is most effective when used for processing highly abrasive products. In a two-stage design the second stage establishes controlled backpressure, concentrating the energy in the first homogenizing zone and also minimizes the possibility of clumping/coalescence. The following represents the range of valve options available. Piloted Valve is typically used as a single-stage valve for flow rates greater than 2,500 gph (9,500 1ph). CD Valve assembly, made of ceramic material, is designed for high pressure cell disruption. SEO Valve is constructed of ceramic and is ideal for applications requiring pressures from 10,000 up to 21,750 psi (700 to 1,500 bar). This result is extremely efficient, low pressure homogenization of dairy products. Ball or poppet valves may be selected depending on your application. Designs meet both domestic and international sanitary specifications. Three-Part Valve Housing The unique design of this APV valve housing is an example of engineering superiority. This design allows pressure segregation from suction and discharge manifolds , reducing the possibility of breaking or cracking a valve housing block. Ball or poppet valves can be specified depending on the application. This valve housing is typically used for applications requiring over 10,000 psi (700 bar). Poppet Valve Cylinder (TPS) is for low-viscosity, moderately abrasive products such as vegetable oils, ice cream mix, silicone and sulfur. Ball Valve Cylinder (TBS) is for high viscosity or abrasive products such as peanut butter, evaporated milk, wax emulsions, lubricants and pigments. EMI Poppet Valve Cylinder (TPS) Series 80 Cylinder is machined from a stainless steel forging. Pistons reciprocate in field replaceable wear liners and utilize single-ring packing. This design is most commonly supplied with the Micro-Gap®. Double Packed Cylinder is engineered for better control of fugitive emissions (compounds that are pathogenic, toxic, radioactive, flammable, etc.). It also is efficient in situations where valuable plunger coolants need to be collected, recirculated or disposed of. Aseptic Homogenization APV offers a line of aseptic homogenizers for use in processing applications where sterile conditions must be met. They are designed for sterilization with steam or hot water with temperatures up to 140° Celsius (284° Fahrenheit).
