Vol. 31, Issue 5 Photo by Francis Angelone Photo by Greg Murray Introducing Walkabout Tremont Join us Friday, May 13 for the transformed ArtWalk Started in 1993, the Tremont ArtWalk quickly put Tremont on the map, becoming a tradition the second Friday of every month. There’s still a vibrant art scene in Tremont, but now that art also includes chef-driven restaurants, creatively-curated boutiques, live music and more. That’s why the ArtWalk is being transformed into “Walkabout Tremont,” a weekend-long showcase of food, fashion and art the second weekend of every month. Walkabout Tremont kicks off Friday, May 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. by greatly expanding the scope of the original ArtWalk with extended hours at galleries and shops, pop-up tents featuring art and artists from within and outside Tremont, street entertainment, live music, restaurant and bar specials, open churches and neighborhood audio tours. “Walkabout Tremont is a re-imagination of the Tremont ArtWalk—a continuation of the artistic spirit and innovation fostered for 23 years,” says Lynn Murray, president of the Tremont West Development Corporation Board of Directors. “The essence of Walkabout Tremont is a new emphasis on all that is creative in our community: gallery art, performance art, fashion, food, specialty retail and services, as well as our churches and local history.” A core group of about 20 volunteers, including artists, business owners and Tremont residents, has been meeting for the past six months to give this monthly event a facelift that more closely reflects the creative neighborhood Tremont has become. 2406 Professor Avenue Cleveland, Ohio 44113 Address Service Requested Non Profit Org. US Postage Paid Cleveland, Ohio Permit # 1591 A Weekend-Long Event May 2016 With more than 30 bed & breakfast and Airbnb locations in the neighborhood, and plenty of things to see and do all the way to Sunday—brunch, shopping, churches, live music, the Tremont Flea starting in June and much more— Walkabout Tremont encourages visitors to amble right through the weekend. “The tagline—feed your creative side—sums up what Walkabout Tremont is all about. There’s so much creative inspiration in Tremont just waiting to be discovered,” said artist and resident Jill LeMieux. “All people have the child artist in them. Tremont is a great place to connect with that early love of creativity; and the second Friday and weekend of each month promises to be an ideal time to do just that.” Visit WalkaboutTremont.com for more specifics, an event map, neighborhood tours and gallery/store/ restaurant hours. She began working with us as an intern when she was earning her Bachelor’s Degree at Cleveland State University. Since then, she has also earned a Masters in Educational Technology. Qualetha started in our property management department assisting with our 2406 portfolio as well as the Cleveland Housing Network units managed by Tremont West. Since then, she has been our Office Manager, our go-to-gal when it comes to all of our office needs. Qualetha has an entrepreneurial spirit and plans to continue to build her business after she leaves Tremont West. Best Wishes, Qualetha! Welcome, Matt Moss, Housing and Economic Development Director! On April 1st, I began my role as Tremont’s new Housing and Economic Development Director. I am very grateful for the opportunity to work in Tremont, and excited to apply my experience and skills for the betterment of the neighborhood. Since moving to Cleveland in 2008, I feel I have had a front row seat to the latest renaissance this city is currently experiencing. At the center of it all is Tremont, and I am excited to work in and for a neighborhood that draws in so many visitors while maintaining a vibrant community for steadfast residents and new arrivals. After attending Case Western Reserve University, I obtained my master’s degree in Urban Planning from Cleveland State. Since then, I have worked for the City in its Department of Economic Development, assisting businesses both new and old to establish themselves and grow in their city. I have been involved in Cleveland’s startup community as well, and I hope to bring my understanding of the challenges of starting and running business to help those who call Tremont home. Please feel free to say hello if you see me around the neighborhood, and I hope to stop into every business soon! Tremont Community AIR Mural Project Update On April 13th, Tremont Community AIR Mural Project had its last public session at the Literary Cafe. We had fun as always making art with our neighbors. We had a packed house with some of our now tile-decoratingaddicted regulars, as well as several folks who were happy to finally find the opportunity to make it to a session and participate, just under the wire. Our tile count now lies at 799, all created by our Tremont and Duck Island neighbors and friends. Great job folks!!! Work on mural now continues in Angelica Pozo’s studio with two core groups of community members and artists. First group, the Illustrators have been beautifully depicting Historic Tremont images on tile in black and white. We will have over 50 images on the wall when all is said and done. The other core group, Art Crew helps out with all other aspects of the mural, including but not Photo by Randy Norfus limited to creating border tiles, and creating the broken tile mosaic for the top, as well as actual installation, which is planned to start early in June with a dedication set for June 21st. Stay tuned for more details on that. Follow our progress on the group Facebook page. Many finished tile results are posted there so take a peak: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TremontAIR/ Your Monthly Update from the GVV Bridge Project Team ODOT Shares Updated Plans for Sideyard Park & Area Adjacent to Towpath Trail: ODOT and the Cleveland Metroparks recently visited several Tremont block clubs to discuss updated plans for the “Sideyard” park and hillside adjacent to the Towpath Trail, near Sokolowski’s University Inn. The biggest change is to the area formerly known as “Blueberry Hill” which is bound by Sokolowski Way, Abbey Avenue and the Towpath Trail. While ODOT and the Metroparks work on a maintenance agreement for the area, the parks expressed some concerns over maintainability of the old plan and that the use of blueberries could attract unwanted animals to the area. The area has instead been revised to include native and non-invasive tree and shrub species which will provide a colorful and texture-filled pallet for the area. On the west slope, some landscaping is likely to be installed this year, but the bulk of plantings are not anticipated to be complete until 2017, as the area will still be used to host equipment. The final piece of the Towpath is a protective canopy under the Norfolk Southern rail bridge which will be complete in 2017. The Towpath cannot open to the public until this is complete. Work at Abbey Avenue: Soon, Tremonters should expect short-term closures of Abbey Avenue under I-90 as crews erect shoring towers and repair pavement. A 10day closure of Abbey is expected in June as crews erect steel overhead. The detour is easy, simply use the NEW West 14th connection to travel under the new bridges and connect with Fairfield and West 11th Street. Additional Work in Other Tremont Areas: There is still some work to be done adjacent to I-90 between Fairfield and Starkweather Avenues. Fencing is being replaced and crews will plant trees and shrubs in the area separating the homes from I-90. Crews will also cover graffiti and complete painting of the overpasses including the bridge columns and varied flags. Finally, Starkweather and Kenilworth will be paved between West 14th Street and Scranton Avenue. Work is weather dependent and will be scheduled with other paving activities. Remember: Getting to Tremont is still easy using the new Abbey loop ramp. However, the W 14th Street entrance ramp to I-90 east is closed until the second bridge is complete in late 2016. Please keep in mind this is an active construction zone and stay safely away. For more info on the project, visit www.Innerbelt.org. In This Photo: The “Sideyard” park includes reconfigured plantings, contoured landscaping and an open lawn space. The area formerly known as “Blueberry Hill” (adjacent to Sokolowski Way, Abbey Avenue and the Towpath Trail) will now house a variety of native, non-invasive trees and shrubs. In the 1850’s, the neighborhood was home to Cleveland University in an area known as University Heights. Though the school has closed and the area has been renamed, many local businesses still pay homage to this foundation. This is also the case with Ake’demik. A lifestyle store opening early May at 2360 West 11th Street. Cory and Cole Berger hope their store complements the array of clothing stores and boutiques already in Tremont. Ake’demik stands out in comparison in that store items focus on men’s grooming and fashion. Shoppers can find anything from clothing, leather bags, and jewelry to mustache wax, beard oils, and razors. Almost all of the brands carried are domestic including Hudson Made New York and Beard Brand. The store is not the first Berger family business to set roots in Cleveland. Cory and Cole’s family started Grover Musical Products circa 1922. Grover has been a manufacturer and distributor for stringed instruments ever since. As customers walk in, they will notice the rustic/ industrial theme of the walls and, counters, and tables. All of which were made in-house or locally. One of the wall murals depicts the state of Ohio with the phrase “Made in USA”. A mantra that represents the items handpicked for Ake’demik. Before becoming a Tremont resident, Cory was part of an LA based clothing company. “That was a great learning experience that gave me the bug to do my own thing, “said Cory. His “own thing” includes selecting the type of brands the store will carry. “Our pieces are unique, have meaning, and won’t be found in Sax or Nordstrom,” he continued. Cole, who just moved back from Chicago, has been the key to locking in vendors. “He’s been tenacious, “said Cory. The two do extended research on vendors before proposing partnerships. Most surprising to the brothers has been the overwhelming response from vendors. One watch brand out of Switzerland has allowed Ake’demik to be the only US distributor. Although this may sound like an expensive item, everything in the store is meant to fit a young professional’s budget. “We want our items to be durable and quality, “said Cory. Additional items in stock include hats, T-shirts, and even a brand of wooden sunglasses. Perhaps even more exciting is a line of bikes by Urban Commuters out of San Francisco. The shop will carry 8 bikes: Two men’s, two kid’s, and two unisex. Cory and Cole plan to change store options often. “We want customers to come in every three months and see something new and different, “said Cory. Ake’demik is opening early May, but is also planning a grand opening celebration in July. Store hours are currently projected to Wednesday through Sunday with hours that adjust depending on other Tremont activities like the Farmers’ Markets and Walkabouts. The Berger brothers look forward to a new beginning in a new spring season. Paying homage to the roots of Tremont while also filling a neighborhood need will be the continuing mission of Ake’demik. Auburn-Lincoln Park Block Club members gathered at Pilgrim Church Social Hall on April 18, Sara Thomas from the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center presented an overview of “Cleveland Big Wheel Relay.” The event is planned for June 25 from 2:00 – 5:00pm on W. 11th Street between Kenilworth and Starkweather. Street closing/access plans were discussed. All residents are welcome to attend this free event. John McDonnell provided an update on Merchant Street Provisions and Eatery located at W. 11th Street and Kenilworth. When it opens in June it will be a market that will offer retail items and a sit-down space for “grab and go” options, imported goods, wine, beer, bread, cheese, produce and other items. Jocelyn Clemings of ODOT shared updates on the landscaping refinements of the west slope area and Side Yard Park adjacent to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. ODOT is in negotiations for a long-term lease with the Cleveland Metroparks who have agreed to maintain the new park areas created by the new Inner Belt design. The entire project will be done in June 2017. Cameras and lighting will be included in the park areas. A safety update was provided by Sgt. Frank Woyma. He asked members to report crime or quality of life issues. He asked citizens to report suspicious activity from now through the Republican National Committee (RNC) convention as professional protestors will be arriving in the City and plan to disrupt activities. Members were reminded to check the Safety Page of Tremont West’s web site or the Auburn Block Club Facebook page at www.Facebook. com/auburnblock club to keep updated on safety concerns and to “turn lights on”, “put your junk in you trunk”, “don’t keep a quarter in your cup” to discourage would-be criminals. All Block Club members are invited to attend the block club’s Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon cheering party on the tree lawn of the Lincoln Park Bathhouse on Sunday, May 15 from 7:00am – 9:00am. Sherman DeLozier and folks from the South Side will be joining us for the party! Scott Rosenstein explained the TWDC election process and invited everyone to the Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 19. Lynn McLaughlin Murray explained the staggered terms of Board members. Announcements included: 1205 Starkweather (AKA Theater Bldg./American Legion Post) A Good Neighbor “Cooperation Agreement” was drafted and forwarded to the property owner. There has been no response from the property owner. Lynn McLaughlin Murray indicated that no new action has been taken with the rezoning request at City Hall. And, members are encouraged to participate in RiverSweep Clean-up on May 7 from 9:00 am to noon and the Tremont Farmers’ Market that returns to Lincoln Park on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 7:00pm. The following candidates presented themselves for the Tremont West Board of Directors’ Election: Kate Cardin (running for Board reelection), Ann Marie Riley (running for Board President), Vic Selig (running for the Board), Lynn McLaughlin Murray (running for Board re-election), and Richard Sosenko (running for Board reelection). Lynn Murray McLaughlin reported that TWDC will own the residential structure next to the former Our Lady of Mercy. Future use of this structure will be determined and all possibilities will be brought back to the Block Club for input. She also stated that “Walkabout Tremont” will debut on Friday, May 13. Scott Rosenstein reviewed the retirement of Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman and appointment of Kerry McCormack. The new Councilman will stand for re-election in November 2017. His contact information is 216664-2691 or kmccormack@clevelandcitycouncil.org. He will visit the Block Club this summer when Council is on its summer schedule. Upcoming events are always listed in the “Inside Tremont” monthly publication and on the TWDC website at www.tremontwest.org. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 16 at 6:30 pm, at Pilgrim Church hall. Central Tremont Central Tremont neighbors met on Monday, April 4th at The Spotted Owl. We started the meeting off with a discussion with Robert Hartshorn about the Walkabout Tremont, the revamped Tremont ArtWalk that will be beginning on Friday, May 13th. Walkabout Tremont will showcase all of the diverse cultural and retail amenities in the neighborhood. It will take place the second Friday of every month, but will span the entire weekend. Some ideas in the works are having pop-up galleries for emerging artists, music, and decorative lighting along commercial streets. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Robert Hartshorn at robert_hartshorn@yahoo.com. Mark Pratt, Tremont West’s new Safety Coordinator and Property Manager joined us to introduce himself. He and his family have lived in the neighborhood for 5 years. Mark invited members to join the Tremont Safety Committee at its next meeting on Monday, May 9th. The committee meets the second Monday of every month at 6:30pm at Tremont West. Members spoke with Mark regarding a variety of safety issues, including a potentially abandoned car that has been spotted in the block club, the status of Paul Duda’s campaign for neighborhood security cameras, and the usefulness of footage from private cameras that may have helped with the reduction of car vandalisms by bb guns that have been taking place throughout the west side. Mark pointed out that those interested in purchasing home security cameras would do well to consider investing the extra $100 for HD cameras that can capture license plates and other details that standard cameras cannot. Block club members also suggested a positive PR campaign to counteract some of the negative newspaper coverage regarding crime in the neighborhood. The 2016 RiverSweep will take place on Saturday, May 7th this year. RiverSweep is Ohio’s largest “done-in-a-day” cleanup. In the past, Central Tremont has worked as a block club with students from the ICAN school to focus on areas within the block club that need attention. Members voted to work as a block club again this year. Members also discussed featuring local businesses or residents in future issues of Inside Tremont who help to beautify the neighborhood on a regular basis outside of organized cleanup events. Members also discussed the poor quality of postal service deliveries within the neighborhood, and the need to unify and raise this concern with USPS, as those who have acted individually have not gotten a response. Before adjourning, members talked about creating a memorial dedicated to resident Marc Dorsey, who recently passed away. Two ideas proposed included a plaque on the fence surrounding the electrical station at College and Professor, or plaques for the bike racks in the area. Marc was instrumental in getting both projects completed during his time as the Central Tremont Chair. We will make a decision on this at May’s meeting. Join us for our next meeting on Monday, May 2nd at 6:30pm at a TBD location. For more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs Lynne Nowel (lnowel@hotmail.com) or Julie Goulis (jgoulis@gmail.com). Or call Community Organizer Lindsay Smetana at 216.575.0920 x 102. You can also learn more by visiting our Facebook page at www.facebook. com/CentralTremont. We hope to see you in May! Duck Island The Duck Island Block Club met at St. Wendelin’s Parish rectory on Tuesday, April, 5, 2016 and was called to order at 6:30pm by Co-Chair Tyree Thompson. Absent were Co-Chair Cami Ross, Co-Secretary, Alicia Hudson, and TWDC’s Scott Rosenstein. Special Guest, Mr. Kerry McCormack, newly appointed Ward 3 Councilman introduced himself to the block club and expressed his vision for the neighborhood and its importance to Cleveland’s future development. This introduction led to a discussion regarding safety concerns and some new safety issues that were brought to the club’s attention by Amy Thompson. Officer Horvath with the City of Cleveland’s Community Services Unit reviewed policies and procedures regarding break-ins and other behavior affecting quality of life. Both Tremont West Board member, LerVal Elva, and Tremont West Executive Director, Cory Riordan were our guests as well. Ms. Elva represented the Governance Committee and was there to address anyone seeking to serve as a candidate for the TWDC Board of Directors. Mr. Riordan addressed updates that affect Duck Island and the neighborhood in general. Our final guest was Chad Kertesz of the Osbourne Capital Group. The group is essentially proposing a change of use of the Industrial Fasteners Building on Columbus Avenue. This was Mr. Kertesz’s initial presentation. DIBC is expected to familiarize itself with the plan and bring back any questions and comments affecting the neighborhood. Old Business review included a reminder of the ongoing Ceramic Tile Mural project; a reminder of the Cleveland Marathon and TWDC’s Annual Meeting & Dinner on Thursday, May 19th. Lastly, Brian Hannon presented an initiative suggesting that a resolution be put in place to keep the historic right of way view of the west-side market clock from our Abbey Avenue view. He has expressed his concern over development that may lead to blocked views and congestion. Brian is seeking a resolution and Inside Tremont DIBC support asked for his petition. Attached to our agenda were a host of upcoming events and projects affecting our neighborhood included the annual RiverSweep clean-up which is to take place Saturday, May 7. The very productive meeting adjourned approximately 8pm. Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 3, 2016. We encourage our DIBC membership to bring ideas and issues, as well as requests for speakers and guests to our Co-Chairs. For more information about block club meetings and activities please contact our Co-Chairs: Tyree Thompson- tyreet10@aol.com and Cami Ross- bluehorsey@hotmail.com. As always, Scott Rosenstein at TWDC, 216-575-0920 ext 106-scottrosenstein@tremontwest.org is available for questions and comments too. Please “like” us on Facebook – and please join us at our next business meeting, Tuesday, May 3rd, 6:30pm at the St. Wendelin Parish rectory. Clark Scranton Neighborhood Association For current information please www.clarkscranton.weebly.com. visit our website: Lincoln Heights The Lincoln Heights Block Club held its April meeting on Monday, April 11th at the Cleveland APL. While many representatives from the City of Cleveland were invited and committed to attend to update us on infrastructure plans initially discussed at our November meeting, Commissioner Rob Mavec from Traffic Engineering was in attendance to discuss traffic issues in our service area. He explained how new structures are now in place to grade for priority resurfacing and the ways in which the protocol for the increase and distribution of funds for these projects have changed and were removed from councilmatic charge. There was a brief discussion regarding the future bike lanes along Scranton road. No plans have been finalized to date; the changes would likely occur during a resurfacing project in the future. Dedicated lanes may be an option south of Branch Ave. to Clark Ave., but most of Scranton Rd. would retain its parking or center turn lanes. Many questions brought to Commissioner Mavec would have best been answered by the Mayor’s Office of Capital Projects whom was not in attendance. We may be able to anticipate at least a center stripe on Barber once the weather has broken to help with traffic flow in the wrong lane on that road since the halfpave done after the Water Department’s contractors performed some work last summer. Our Membership is very thankful to the detail and professionalism of Commissioner Mavec and his willingness to listen to our issues. Road conditions left by Dominion contractors on West 18th Place have not yet been remediated. Representatives from the Rite Aid Marathon gave us an overview on the route changes this year. They asked that we call their office to advise if there are special needs for certain areas along the route, and encouraged us to come out and cheer on the runners. The marathon will be on May 15th and will affect our area mostly between 7 and 9am. Mailings will be sent out to all residents well in advance, and “no parking” signs along the route should be up the Monday evening prior to the event. ODOT advised that the spring clean-up done each year in anticipation of the marathon is finished. We were advised that once the project is completed this fall, responsibility for maintenance of specific areas will revert back to the City. Membership was given a preliminary review of the site plans for the Scranton Townhomes presented by Gusty Molnar, for a 10-unit townhome project. It was suggested by the leadership that he reach out to residents in that area that may not regularly attend our meetings to inform them of the plans as well. This project is anticipated for an Action Item Vote in the upcoming months. We heard updates from Josh Rosen and Dick Grey on their development projects. A big thank you is due to Sharon Harvey and the APL who lent us the space for this month’s meeting! Their trap-neuter-release program has significantly lowered the feral cat population and number of stray kittens brought into the APL recently. There is a possibility that the lot to the East of the existing parking lot may eventually be used to address issues with limited parking, but they have no plans for the hill south of the building at this time. They are also hoping to provide expanded lowcost veterinarian services in the future. On the other side of Willey, Josh Rosen explained that he has been working to get the Willey/ Columbus hill cleaned up, located just west of the block club service area. A City crew came out briefly the week before our meeting but it doesn’t appear much clean-up occurred. Sargent Frank Woyma from the 2nd District attended our meeting and updated us on the dumping detail done recently, upcoming “quality of life” details, and the recent bomb scare at West 14th. He advised us to be aware of any suspicious activity, especially traffic in-and-out of empty buildings that seems unusual, as the RNC nears and to report any suspicious activity to the police. The new Safety Coordinator for TWDC introduced himself to our group. Mark Pratt moved here five years ago from Virginia and is a former State Trooper. He stated that 34 individuals who have sprayed graffiti in our neighborhood among other have been identified, with 24 charged and more yet to be charged. Of those convicted, a crew will be formed to perform abatement on the West side. Please report any graffiti sighting to Mark to catalogue these for the crew. Be sure to join us at our May meeting on May 9, 2016 at 6:00pm, at the Pilgrim Church (2nd Floor Chapel). We have confirmation that new Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack has committed to attend. Keep an eye out for postcards and flyers with more details about May’s agenda. Please be sure to visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/ LHBlockClub/. We look forward to seeing you in May! Mentor Castle Clark/ Holmden Buhrer Rowley On the first Wednesday of April, the HBR-MCC Block Club heard from special guests, discussed safety concerns, finalized proposed changes to the block club By-laws (voting May 4), and nominated block club officers (voting May 4). It was a busy meeting. Our own block club member, Richard Sosenko, spoke about the role and responsibilities of the Tremont West Economic Development Committee. Rich explained the committee mainly focuses on city code compliance and land use variances. Particularly in the case of variances, the Economic Development Committee gives great consideration to the support or lack of support of the impacted block club. As residents, variances and similar land-use decisions have a real impact on how our blocks are developed. Rich encouraged resident participation in all Tremont West committees, including Economic Development. The block club heard about Tremont’s resident theater company, convergence-continuum, and on their “Play Your Part” capitol campaign to buy their own building. Special Guests, Jim Smith & Lucy Bredeson-Smith gave an overview of the cutting-edge work of the experimental theater, which has been operating on Scranton Ave. for 15 years. The Tremont troupe is trying to raise $200,000 to buy the building and renovate the third floor for theater use. The Liminis, convergence-continuum’s building, will go up for sale at the end of 2016. For more information on the Play Your Part campaign, visit convergence-continuum.org or call 216.687.0074. The block club discussed safety concerns, including a reminder to keep our eyes open for a car license-plate-switching scheme discovered on our blocks, and we discussed a recent police raid on W. 19th Street. HBR-MCC held its second review of our block club By-laws. Some changes were rejected and some revised to be put up for a full vote at our May 4 block club meeting. Lastly, we nominated a slate of block club officers to be elected at our May 4 meeting (don’t miss it!). May’s meeting will be Wednesday, May 4 at 6:30pm at Zion Church (2716 West 14th St, park in rear). If you have questions or would like more information on the block club and its activities, please contact Co-Chairs, Joel Reynolds (joelreynolds121@gmail.com), Beverly Wurm (beverlywurm@ yahoo.com), or Secretary Rich Weiss (dickieweiss@gmail.com), or contact Lindsay at Tremont West (216.575.0920 x 102 or LindsaySmetana@tremontwest.org). Information is also available at our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/HBR-MCC. Metro North Our first business meeting of 2016 was held on Tuesday, March 22nd. We discussed RTA proposed service cuts in Tremont (we were encouraged to sign petitions/write letters/e-mails encouraging RTA to maintain service and to attend a Public Meeting at Tremont Pointe Community Room in early April. We also recapped our block club involvement with the Tremont Community Artist in Residence ceramic tile mural project and shared more public opportunities for tile-making for the mural project (many thanks to Metro North members, Angela and Maria Guy, who have attended a number of public sessions and created many beautiful tiles for the project). We also were encouraged to participate in the annual RiverSweep clean-up – to take place in Tremont/Duck Island and other city neighborhoods on Saturday, May 7th, 9am – 12 Noon. The Tremont West Annual Meeting & Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, May 19th – and LerVal Elva a representative of the Tremont West Governance Committee spoke to us encouraging prospective Board candidates to serve a term on the Tremont West Board of Directors. On the agenda for our late April meeting: Safety and CourtWatch updates with our special guest, Mark Pratt, Tremont Safety Coordinator. At the April meeting were are scheduled to meet with a number of candidates seeking election to the Tremont West Board of Directors, who will be seeking our support and our vote at the May Annual Meeting (see above). Also on the schedule for late April was a Public Meeting for the Scranton/ Carter Road Reconstruction (Fairfield to Columbus Road). That meeting was scheduled to introduce the project construction team to the public and to go over traffic restrictions, construction sequencing and construction details. The project limits are Scranton Road (Fairfield to Carter) and Carter Road (Scranton to Columbus). The improvements planned include new concrete pavement for both roadways, new driveways, new sidewalks, water line upgrades, new drainage infrastructure and green stormwater solutions to address water quality. The meeting was running concurrently with our block club meeting, so residents could choose which one to attend, or leave the block club meeting to catch the remainder of the Scranton/Carter Public Meeting. For more information on our block club, check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Metro-North-Block-Club, or contact Chair, Sue Krosel—or Scott at Tremont West—scottrosenstein@tremontwest.org or 216.575.0920 ext.106. North of Literary The North of Literary (NOL) Block Club’s most recent meeting was April 19th at Press Winebar. Co-chairs Mike Williams and Sam Vozar began the meeting confirming that the block club sent a letter of support for the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, and a letter of concern to RTA regarding proposed service cuts. Special guests Jocelynn Clemings and David Lastovka from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), and Sean McDermott of the Cleveland Metroparks provided additional updates on the inner belt bridge project. They showed sketches of some minor changes to the plantings in the section of the Towpath that will go under the bridge (formerly called Blueberry Hill) as well as minor changes to the “Sideyard” Park. They confirmed that ODOT and the Metroparks have an agreement in principle for the Metroparks to assume maintenance of the park and landscaping around the bridge, with the details being finalized. The block club passed a motion to approve and support the proposed changes. Six candidates (Ann Marie Riley, Zora Saric Eizember, Lynn McLaughlin Murray, Rich Sosenko, Kate Carden, and Vic Selig) for Tremont West Development Corporation Board of Directors introduced themselves to the block club and spoke about their candidacies. Scott Rosenstein provided details about the TWDC Annual Meeting & Dinner on Thursday, May 19th, and everyone was encouraged to attend. Deane Malaker graciously volunteered his front porch on W. 10th Street & Thurman as the location for the NOL cheering section for the Rite Aid Marathon to be held Sunday, May 15th, 7am – 9am. Members were also encouraged to attend local eateries for Tuesdays in Tremont. Restaurants will donate 10% of proceeds to Arts in August. Plans for the proposed new Calatrello/ Lineberger home on W. 10th Street were presented by NOL member, Fred Calatrello along with Jeff Eizember of Arcform. After review and discussion of site plans and variances needed, a motion of support to the Board of Zoning Appeals was passed. For more information on our block club and activities, please check out our Facebook page, or contact Co-Chairs, Sam Vozar – samvozar@ gmail.com - and Mike Williams mjwilliams334@gmail.com – or Community Outreach Manager, Scott Rosenstein, at Tremont West at 216-575-0920 x106 – scottrosenstein@tremontwest.org. Please join us for our next gathering, Tuesday, May 17th at 6:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you! South of Jefferson The April meeting of the South of Jefferson block club held at the Roosevelt Post 58 began with a call to order and introductions. Block club Co-Chair Greg Kobe updated the attendees on the new construction proposed for 2487/2489 West 7th Street (reviewed at the March meeting) and informed the group that the builders and the neighboring property owners were happy with the revised fence and driveway. Resident Scott Nagy also informed the block club that the house dimensions were also reduced to accommodate parking. The review of minutes resulted in an amendment regarding a carjacking sentencing being change from “just outside the block club” to “just outside the neighborhood”. Mike Koski gave a brief safety update followed by special guests Cleveland Police officers Bill Mazer and Dave Schramm. Officer Mazer reported that two adults were arrested in connection with the rash of broken car windows that plagued the neighborhood in the previous months. A resident raised the ongoing issue of cars speeding up Brayton Avenue during the morning hours. Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Course Director Howard Mack spoke to the block club on behalf of the race set to run extensively through Tremont on Sunday, May 15th. Mack stressed how popular the neighborhood has become among runners due to the great turnout in onlookers and supporters in past years. Maps of the route were provided to all attendees and notices are set to be delivered to all homes on the streets that will be temporarily shut down. Street parking will be prohibited from 2am until noon on the day of the race. Mack stated that runners through the neighborhood will likely begin to come through at 7.30am and be gone by 9am. A vote of support was given to Mack and the Marathon by a margin of 8 in favor and one (1) opposed with concerns over possible disruption of access to church services. SOJ is considering a location for a cheering station to be determined at the May meeting. The block club was next joined by newly seated Ward 3 Cleveland City Councilman Kerry McCormack. Councilman McCormack gave a brief autobiography and stressed how thrilled he was to be representing the ward. He encouraged residents to reach out to him with any concerns. He also gave out cards with his contact info – 216.664.2691 – kmccormack@ clevelandcitycouncil.org. In an update on the Tremont Community Mural project, Greg Kobe reported that 731 ceramic tiles have been completed on the way to the goal of 850 tiles. Cuts to RTA service and the 81 bus line that serves Tremont were the next topic of discussion. Scott Rosenstein reported that the turnout for the RTA community forum hosted at Tremont Pointe was poorly attended by residents. Councilman McCormack stated that City Council passed a resolution opposing the elimination of the loops providing service to public housing and pointed out that the state funding cuts to public transit are the main culprit in the fare hikes and service cuts proposed by RTA. TWDC board member and SOJ member, Kate Carden, reintroduced herself to the block club and asked for their support in the upcoming elections for the Tremont West Board of Directors on Thursday, May 19th at the Tremont West Annual Meeting & Dinner. Carden has served on the board for two years and said she looks forward to continuing to be a resource for the neighborhood. The final order of business was nominating Co-Chairs and Secretaries to serve the block club. A big thanks was extended to Brian Bellomo for his years of service to the block club as a very dedicated block club CO-Chair! Greg Kobe was re-elected Co-Chair and Deborah Smith was newly elected Co-Chair. Tim Harrison was re-elected and Randi Zubin was newly elected to serve as Co-Secretaries. Thanks as well to Bridget Mundy who served as a Co-Secretary this past year! Congratulations to the elected officers for 2016 – and many thanks to outgoing officers for their service!
