805 South - Blues Rock Band

805 South (8-oh-5 South) is a Los Angeles based blues-rock band that is a fusion of original
Memphis Rhythm and Blues, Nashville songwriting, southern rock guitar, groove pumping drums and
smooth bluesy bass lines. If “Black Crowes”, “Etta James”, and “Cream” had a baby than 805 South
would be that love child. They have been called “Stevie Ray Vaughan’ with chicks and female “Jimi
Hendrix”.

805 South's "Hey Hey Hey" has been featured on Myxer.com as "Featured Artist", "Favorite 15"
ringtones with a download over 7,000+, and "Angel" has been "Pick of the Day" for Valentine Day
with a download over 14,000+.
805 South started as a song. Lisa and Candy wrote the song “805 South” while taking a trip to
the San Diego Zoo. After much thought, they named the band 805 South and renamed the song
"Woke Up".
Lisa Shea was born in Memphis, TN. Lisa fell in love with music at an early age. Her mom and dad
had many records like B. B. King, Jimi Hendrix, War, to Mahalia Jackson. Lisa knew she wanted to
play guitar after seeing the 1986 movie "Crossroads", a movie about the trials and tribulations of a
blues guitarist. The glam/heavy/southern rock and blues scene inspired Lisa, a child of the 80/90s.
She wrote and recorded her original music and took guitar lessons here and there. During trying
times the guitar came second; "I made a pact with myself saying when I pick up the guitar again,
I will never put it down." In 2005 Lisa did just that and resumed playing rhythm guitar, songwriting,
and vocals for 805 South.
Candy's singing career began at age 10 when she sang in a church choir in Nashville, TN. At an early
age she had a love for music, singing, songwriting, playing the flute, and musical influences ranging
from blues, to R&B, country and rock. "In the back of my mind, I always wanted to create a band, but
life kind of got in the way! I just kept writing songs, in hopes that one day there would be an outlet for
my music." – Candy.

The last competition rounds--to snag a slot at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis early
next year-- are happening as we speak. For Southern California, acts who made it to the finals are
playing a marathon show, Battle Of The Blues Bands, this Saturday at The Cellar in Long Beach.
Personally, I'm rooting for 805 South, who play the first set at 4 p.m. sharp. Think of them as the Riot
Grrrls of the blues: Two ladies sharing lead vocal and songwriting duties, backed by classic
instrumentalists on bass, drums, and lead guitar. Each chanteuse has her own sound and style.
Rhythm guitarist Lisa Shea proffers a smooth alto that some describe as "female Jimi Hendrix,"
though she carries a tune much better than that guitar god. Candy Bailey, meanwhile, has a prettyyet-edgy voice that reminds me of underground power-pop songstresses. Indeed, like Nina and
Louise of Veruca Salt, Lisa and Candy are able to combine their different sounds and smoothly trade
roles as frontwoman or backup singer.
My favorite tracks from their CD, Pay To Play: "Hey, Hey, Hey," which proves that blues can indeed
be catchy.
I'd recommend 805 South to aficionados as well as those who, like an old friend once told me, think
blues sounds too much like a guy needs to clear his throat for them to listen very long. So if you go to
the Battle Of The Blues Bands, go early and check 'em out!
