1937 BOEING PT-13A STEARMAN
Vintage Aeroplane Europe, ApS 1945 BOEING A75N1 STEARMAN N813LG, sn 75-8698 - 300hp Jacobs Fuel Injected Engine The highest standard, lowest hour Stearman we have ever offered! This is certainly the finest and best equipped Stearman that we have ever offered. Only 75 hours since complete airframe and engine overhaul by Vintage Aeroplane Europe. 300hp Jacobs fuel injected engine provides both power and fuel economy. Hand-rubbed gloss dope finish with everything polished. We wish we could bring it to OSHKOSH! This aircraft was restored by our company last year and only has 75 hours since the work was done. Unfortunately, the owner has lost his hangar space and must sell this stunning aircraft at considerably less than his purchase price. AIRFRAME: Ground-up Restoration in September 2011 at 3000 hours total time. This is a stunning aircraft with very low time since a complete restoration and overhaul. Vintage Aeroplane Europe ApS,SE +46 733522638, Email: sales@vintageaeroplane.com Web www.vintageaeroplane.com HISTORY: This is one of the last aircraft delivered to the US Navy as an N2S-5 in 1945. It was released from the US Navy and sold for $500 in April, 1948, and by June of 1948, it was already modified for agricultural spray use. Total time by 1956 was recorded at 2849 hours. In 1982 the aircraft was converted back to a two place aircraft and restored to standard category. Dr. L. Glorioso of New Orleans bought the aircraft in 1987 and based it together with the Stearmans of six other Quiet Birdmen (QB) members at Lakefront Airport in New Orleans. The Lakefront QB’ers were famous for their crawfish parties and other events at Galesburg, Jennings, Sun’n Fun and Oshkosh each year, where they travelled in Stearman formation from Lakefront. In typical New Orleans sarcastic spirit, Dr. Glorioso painted his Stearman in the authentic Yellow Peril colours of “Cadet MacDribble” and his infamously unlucky squadron number 13, which featured so prominently in the “What NOT to do” sections of the WWII Navy training films by Robert Taylor. (http://www.historicaviation.com/product_info.po?ID=15461) “KATRINA”: In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina completely destroyed Lakefront Airport and all the aircraft remaining there – including all of the Stearmans owned by the QB Gang – save one: N813LG. At 8 feet above sea level, the airport extends into Lake Ponchartrain and is outside of the New Orleans Levee system. As such, it was spared the prolonged flooding that devastated the city, but still, it endured several hours of pounding wind, waves and storm surge. While all hangars were affected, Dr. Glorioso’s remained physically intact and was briefly flooded. The aircraft seems to have floated around and incurred a severe case of “hangar rash” but little else by way of structural damage. Vintage Aeroplane Europe ApS,SE +46 733522638, Email: sales@vintageaeroplane.com Web www.vintageaeroplane.com AFTERMATH: After a careful inspection, we purchased the aircraft with a view to restoring this sole survivor to airworthy condition. Even though water had not entered the engine or oil system, the owner protected the engine by filled the case and cylinders to the top with water-displacing oil. When we obtained the plane, we performed a top-end tear-down to confirm that the engine had not suffered any damage. Even though the aircraft seemed in very good condition, the correct way forward (and only way for our company) was to undertake a complete “penalty overhaul” of the airframe and engine per original military specifications. This involves a structural tear down to the bare steel tubular frame, followed by a sandblast, pressure-fill linseed oil treatment and a full airframe overhaul of all components and fixtures. As shown above, the original Continental engine was replaced with a 0 since overhaul 300 hp Jacobs engine together with all accessories from Radial Engines Limited. The final result is one of the most stunning and best performing of any Stearman aircraft that we have ever operated. LOCATION: The aircraft is currently located in Israel with its present owner. It has already been legally imported into the EU with all VAT paid. There is no additional VAT payable in this sale for use within the EU. The current owner will undertake the dismantling and packaging of the aircraft for shipment from Israel at his cost. PRICE: €175,000 as a private sale with EU VAT paid. Disassembled and packaged for shipping FOB Israel.
