Bhandari Ram (VC) Sub. Sanjay Kumar INTRODUCTION Ujaala is an NGO registered under the Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act 2006. The main objectives of the NGO are Education, Women & Child Empowerment, Health awareness, sports activities, Environment protection and spread awareness about disaster management among the mass. The group has planned to initiate NGO's objectives by organizing an event “Veer Yodha” to honor the brave Indian Army soldiers of Himachal Pradesh who were awarded with Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra and Ashoka Chakra. Ÿ Param Vir Chakra is the highest gallantry award for army personnel's for the highest degree of valour in the presence of the enemy. This award was introduced on 26th January 1950. Ÿ The Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) (Maha Vir = "great warrior") is the second highest military decoration in India, after the Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air. Ÿ Vir Chakra is an Indian gallantry award presented for acts of bravery in the battlefield. It is third in precedence in the war time gallantry awards Ÿ The Ashok Chakra is awarded for valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peace time equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra, and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. 1. Some of the brave Indian Army soldiers from Himachal Pradesh who have shown utmost bravery in protecting their country are Major Som Nath Sharma, the first Param Vir Chakra awardee for his bravery in the Kashmir operations in November 1947. Lt. Col Dhan Sing Thapa, He was involved in a major action at Ladakh during the Sino-Indian War For his gallant act, Major Dhan Singh Thapa was honored with the highest wartime gallantry medal, the Param Vir Chakra. Captain Vikram Batra, officer of the Indian Army, posthumously awarded with the Param Vir Chakra for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War in Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Honorary Captain Bhandari Ram, the Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy and Subedar Sanjay Kumar and his contribution of bravery within capturing the "TIGER HILL" post in Kargil war 1999.
