There are three operators in Turkey’s mobile
communications market: Turkcell, Vodafone and
Avea. As of September 2014, Turkey had close
to 71.9 million mobile subscribers, amounting to
a 94% penetration. In comparison with the 134%
average penetration in Europe, and in view of
Turkey’s young, technologically-savvy population,
the rapidly increasing data trend and powerful
economic indicators, the mobile market appears to
have continued growth potential. As of September
30, 2014, we see the following distribution of
market shares among the players in the market,
Turkcell, 48,3%; Vodafone, 29%; and Avea, 22,6%.

History
GSM-based mobile communications in Turkey
began in February 1994 when Turkcell began
serving the country. Signing a 25-year GSM
license agreement with the Turkish Ministry of

consequently the number of customers of its
mobile telephone and data communication
services. Turkcell is a regional leader that serves
71.5 million customers in the nine countries where
it operates. Offering its stocks simultaneously on
the Istanbul Stock Exchange (BİST) and the New
York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Turkcell is the first
and only Turkish company with quotes on the
NYSE. Turkcell partipates in still-growing markets
like those of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan,
Moldavia and Georgia through Fintur,
