School Bell Times, Spring 2014
A quarterly news magazine since 1982 for residents of the East Central Independent School District Roland Toscano selected as next EC Superintendent Spring 2014 FALL 2009 Message from On March 17, the East Central Board of Trustees selected Roland Toscano, East Central High School Board School Principal, to replace long time Superintendent Gary Patterson, who will retire on July 1. Mr. President Toscano is an East Central graduate, who has served the last seventeen years in EC as a teachSteve Bryant er, coach, Assistant Principal, Heritage Middle School Principal and High School Principal. Roland and his wife Bonnie (also an East Central graduate), have three children: Dustin, a 2013 graduate, is attending Hardin Simmons University, Francine, who will be a senior next fall at ECHS, and It’s spring, the grass is green, the Tyson, who attends John Glenn Elementary School. “I feel very honored and humbled by this opportunity,” Toscano said. “I want to thank the Board for their support and look forward to working wildflowers are blooming and we with everyone in the district and community as we move East Central into a very bright future.” are beginning the push to the end ECHS teacher wins Trinity Prize for Excellence in Education Stephanie Sanders, who sponsors East Central High School’s STEM club, accepts the Trinity Prize from Michael Fischer, vice president for faculty and student affairs. Photo by Tom Reel / San Antonio Express-News. At the 2014 Trinity Prize for excellence in teaching awards ceremony National Teacher of the Year, Jeff Charbonneau, addressed those in attendance. His message was simple: It is time for educators to combat negative public opinions by telling their stories. Humble by nature, teachers rarely seek to be recognized and seldom promote the positive impact of their work. He described how teachers often make extreme personal sacrifices in order to care for students as if they are their own. After recognizing the Teachers of the Year from the greater San Antonio area, the emcee announced our very own Stephanie Sanders as this year’s Trinity Prize winner. Earning this tremendous honor makes Mrs. Sanders the first ECISD teacher to win the award since Eileen Fox won in 1997. There was definitely a little bit of all of us on stage with her as she graciously received the award. Mrs. Sanders is a 3rd year teacher at ECHS. She has worked diligently to improve her practice and continues to be a student of the profession. Despite pushing them on a regular basis, her students always feel encouraged, inspired, fulfilled, and ready to take on the next challenge. Mrs. Sanders’ classroom is routinely filled with students for hours beyond the school day. Some students come for tutorials while others work relentlessly to prepare for robotics and cyber patriot competitions. Additionally, Mrs. Sanders serves as physics lead teacher and directs all STEM activities. In these roles, she models effective physics instruction, mentors other teachers, facilitates instructional design meetings, coaches teams of students, and has been awarded multiple grants from ALCOA. As if that is not enough, she is preparing her STEM club to mentor and coach 3rd grade students from John Glenn Elementary as they build their own robots. To say the least, Stephanie Sanders is an extraordinary employee, an exemplary ambassador for public education, and an even better person. Mrs. Sanders, you are a perfect representative of the extraordinary faculty and staff of East Central High School. Congratulations and thank you for the positive recognition you have brought to the entire ECISD family! of another exceptional school year. Our district has the honor of being one of five finalists for the HEB Excellence in Education Large District of the Year Award. The award will be presented in Houston on May 3, and we are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff that have led to this honor. HEB is a great friend and promoter of Public Education in Texas. This award is just one of many that HEB sponsors to recognize the great things that are going on within our school systems. Over the last 14 years, our district has been blessed with the leadership of an exceptional educator, Mr. Gary Patterson. Earlier this year Mr. Patterson announced his intention to retire and the Board of Trustees began a search for a new Superintendent. We have selected Mr. Roland Toscano to be the new Superintendent of the East Central Independent School District. Mr. Toscano has served our district in numerous leadership capacities over the last 17 years, most recently as the principal at our high school. He will assume his new role as Superintendent on July 1, 2014. Mr. Patterson leaves a legacy of educational achievement in our district and a culture of student focus. He has provided the leadership necessary to navigate through many difficult times and helped celebrate our many successes and we thank him for his service. We would also like to thank Susie Patterson for her dedication and service to the district during Mr. Patterson’s tenure. We wish them both the best in their future endeavors. East Central selected as finalist for HEB Excellence in Education Awards East Central has been selected as one of five large school districts in Texas to compete for the title of “Best School District” as awarded by HEB in their annual “Excellence in Education” awards program. East Central will compete against Clear Creek, Edinburg, Dripping Springs and Alamo Heights. Often referred to as the “Academy Awards” of public education, HEB each year recognizes the outstanding large and small school districts, school Board of the year, Principal and Assistant Principal of the year, and teachers of the year. The ceremony is held the first weekend of May in Houston. School districts all across the state are nominated, then a panel of judges select the final five districts based on their application. The finalists are then visited by a separate panel of judges who come to the district for a day, interviewing Superintendent, Central Office staff, visiting campuses and having a working lunch with Board members, students, staff, community and business leaders. The “Excellence in Education Awards” focuses on effectiveness of the Board of Trustees, academic programs, extra curricular programs, educating the whole child, passion for teaching and learning, and commitment. East Central is proud to be recognized in the 2013-14 “Excellence in Education” program and thanks HEB for their continued support of public education in Texas. Message from Gary Patterson, ECISD Superintendent of Schools Thank You East Central Dear Staff, Students, and Community of East Central, As most of you know by now, I will be stepping down from my position as Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1 and entering the world of retirement, or at least semi-retirement. I’m not thinking my wife will let me hang out at the house all day every day, but if you know my wife Susie, then you would understand why I would want to spend more time with her and our girls. After 36 years in this wonderful profession, 21 of those as Superintendent, it’s time for someone else to lead our great district. It is very difficult to accurately state in this article just how honored I feel to have been afforded the opportunity to serve in this capacity. I have seen the district grow, built wonderful relationships, and watched as thousands of students soared into the future. I have seen our campuses provide the caring and safe environment necessary for all students to succeed. A very committed and passionate staff would not have it any other way. I have also watched a dedicated Board of Trustees provide exceptional, stable leadership, guiding our district through building projects, the rebuilding of financial stability, promoting the education of the whole child, and prioritizing employee benefits. We are truly fortunate to have our Board. Recently, our Board undertook the very important task of selecting the next Superintendent. Through a very deliberate and thoughtful process, they selected Roland Toscano to fill that role. Mr. Toscano is a very intelligent and gifted leader who will do a great job for you and the district. And finally, I have often stated that any community is only as good as their schools, and any school district is only as good as the community. The East Central community has supported all aspects of our school system through the years, as evidenced by the extra large crowds at school programs, open houses, extra curricular events, the East Central School Foundation, participation on committees PTA’s and many others. A very heartfelt thank you to the Board, the staff (the best in Texas, by far), the students and community. I will miss you all, and take much more with me from the District that I was able to give back. Thank you all so much. 2 Early Start to Learning Development Assessment Are you concerned about your child’s development or suspect a problem in any of these areas: Speech and Language, Behavior, Motor Skills, Problem Solving, and/or Vision or Hearing? There are two reasons for administering CBE testing. First, a student may accelerate instruction or test out or “skip” a grade level or course without having had prior instruction. Second, a student may recover credit for a course or grade level if the student has had prior instruction and failed. Credit by Exam is not to be used to validate home school instruction or instruction for a non-‐credited private or public school. Course validation is administered at the campus level and not through Credit-‐by-‐Exam. Students taking CBE with prior instruction must receive a 70% score or above in order to receive credit. To obtain credit by examination without prior instruction, students must take a series of tests and must obtain a score of at least 80% on the exam. Each exam will take approximately 3 hours. For high school students, all passing grades received will appear on the transcript, but the grades do not count in calculating a student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) or class rank. FEES (With Prior Instruction Only)* Exams taken “with prior instruction” must be paid for by the student. All fees must be paid for in advance by cash, money order, or cashier’s check and will not be refunded once the student is registered regardless of whether the student takes the exam. Exams purchased from University of Texas at Austin Elementary and Middle School (Full Grade Battery)……………………………….………………..$145 Elementary, Middle School (Per Course)……………………………………...………………..…………..$35 High School (Per Semester Course)………………………………...………...…….……….………………..$35 *There is no charge for students taking CBE without prior instruction Take a look at Salado future engineers. Highland Forest Study Guides can be found at: http://www.utexas.edu/ce/k16/cbe-‐ea/study-‐guides/ Students should seek guidance from their school counselor before registering for a CBE. East Central offers Credit-‐by-‐Exam opportunities at least four times a school year. Registration is required at least three weeks prior to the assessment so that tests can be ordered and received in time. Registration forms can be found on the East Central website, or by calling your school counselor or the district assessment office. Instead, you will be required to come to Registration in early August to enroll your child. As a result, the district has taken a proactive approach toward energy reduction by implementing an energy program. In February 2013, the district contracted with Cenergistic Incorporated. Cenergistic is the nation’s leader in developing comprehensive and sustainable energy programs. In late April 2013, Mr. Alonzo was hired as the Energy Specialist and has been an employee of the district for 16 years as a Master HVAC technician. He brings with him 27 years of mechanical experience and a Degree in Management. Since the inception of the energy program, the district has reduced its energy usage by 21.23% and has saved $271,433 in cost avoidance, while maintaining an environment that is conducive to learning.
