Thursday, 10 March to Friday, 18 March This exhibition encouraged the students to reflect upon the events of 1916 through visual art, short film pieces, and multimedia. This exhibition aims to promote an ongoing interest in history, through looking at the lives of ordinary citizens, as well as the key figures of the Easter Rising. The exhibition puts the information in the context of students’ lives today. Limerick and the 1916 Rising Monday, 21 March to Sunday, 15 May The Daly Collection from The Glucksman Library, The University of Limerick will be on display at the Hunt Museum. Included will be photography, paintings letters and other memorabilia which paint a picture of direct personal involvement with 1916 through the activities of a Limerick Family. Highlighted are letters of sympathy following the executions in 1916. The collection also consists of portraits of the Daly sisters and a poem referencing the execution of Roger Casement. The Hunt Museum in collaboration with the Masters students of Interactive Media and Music Technology in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Limerick will create a temporary exhibition on the theme of ‘The Flat Pack Museum’. Exhibitions Twelve Limerick Printmakers have taken over The Hunt Café walls throughout 2016 adding a unique ambience to Limerick’s best riverside café. March: Amanda Lee April: Moya Ní Cheallaigh May: Aine Finnegan LSAD 19th Annual Exhibition Thursday, 14 April to Sunday, 15 May Artworks by 2nd Year Painting Students of LSAD, inspired by The Hunt Museum’s curious and eclectic collection, are exhibited alongside the Museum’s artefacts and paintings, to create imaginative responses to the collection. Curators Choice Naomi O’Nolan, the Museum’s Head of Collections and Exhibitions, selects one piece every month for the display at The Hunt Museum. “The Hunt Museum - A five star surprise” - shipleyjohn 2015 A Terrible Beauty: Centennial Reflection by Robert Ballagh Monday, 23 May to Sunday, 28 August Robert Ballagh was born in Dublin in 1943, Ballagh has achieved national and international success including representing Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1969. Ballagh has long been inspired as an artist by 1916. The rebellion and its leaders has been a recurring subject in his work. This selection has personal resonance as he reflects on the challenges and legacy of the rebellion. 4 All events are free unless otherwise stated. Writer and Storyteller Tuesday, 8 March at 1pm Mae Leonard, well known writer and storyteller, reads a selection of her broadcast and published pieces with International Women’s Day in mind. This event is organised by Friends of The Hunt Museum. Who's War? Shifting Irish attitudes towards the war effort from 1914-1918 Thursday, 10 March at 1pm Lar Joye is curator of Irish Military History at the National Museum of Ireland and curator of the award winning Soldiers & Chiefs exhibition at Collins Barracks. Most recently he has worked with ANU productions on the theatre show Pals - the Irish at Gallipoli. St.Patrick's visit to Limerick: Fact or Fiction Tuesday, 15 March at 1pm In preparation for St. Patrick’s Day, Pádraig Ó Riain will give this lunchtime lecture thanks to the Friends of the Hunt Museum. Pádraig is the author of numerous publications on Irish hagiography, place names, personal names and textual transmission. 8 All events are free unless otherwise stated. Limerick and the 1916 Rising: Symposium at the Hunt Museum Thursday 31 March, 10.30am – 3.30pm This symposium will accompany Limerick and the 1916 Rising exhibition at the museum. The exhibition focuses on the Daly Family collection held at Glucksman library, University of Limerick. The symposium will contextualise the exhibition within the wider history of 1916 while highlighting Limerick connections to this pivotal event in Irish history. This event was organised by Friends of the Hunt Museum. Meeting the children - researching the Revolutionary Years 1912-1923 Tuesday, 19 of April at 1pm Author of Hazel, Lady Lavery, No Ordinary Women and Easter Widows, the Limerick Historian Sinéad McCoole gives an illustrated overview of her work spanning a quarter of a century meeting and interviewing the children and grandchildren of the protagonists. This lecture is organised by Friends of The Hunt Museum. www.huntmuseum.com or call 061 312833 9 Talks & Lectures Talks & Lectures Casting away the camán for the steel that will drive the Saxon from our land: Sport and Revolution, the GAA and the 1916 Rising Friday, 29 April at 1pm Dr Richard McElligott, lecturer in Modern Irish History, University College Dublin, will discuss the GAA's substantial role in the Rising and the profound impact the Rising had on it and its membership. John Edward Daly 1891-1916 Tuesday, 10 May at 1pm Liam Irwin will give a talk about John Edward Daly 18911916. This lecture is organised by Friends of The Hunt Museum, and follows their AGM at 12.20pm. We Know Their Dream: The Literature of 1916 Thursday, 12 May at 1pm Known as the “poet’s rebellion”, the Easter Rising left a rich literary legacy, which has helped to shape our understanding of the events. In this talk Dr Lucy Collins will explore some of the writings associated with key figures of Easter week, and consider the significance of these materials for our understanding of the revolutionary period as a whole. Artist Conversation Series Join us at the Hunt Museum café for an informal discussion with these artists where they will talk about their artistic practice. This is a great way to meet professional artists and ask them questions about their work in a friendly and relaxed environment. Highlights Lecture - Images of Annunciation Tuesday, 3 May at 1 pm David Mc Burnie, docent at the Hunt Museum, will examine the different ways in which the artists in the 15th century - and more recently, have portrayed this important event, with particular emphasis on symbolism and individual interpretation. Kids & Families Kids Brain at the Hunt Museum 19 March, 26 March, 2 April & 9 April Workshops are on Saturdays 1:30pm -3pm. Kids Brain are having parties at the Hunt to show kids that Maths was as fun thousands of years ago as it is today. Kids will get their brains going as they find out how ancient Japanese merchants used an abacus to make calculations and improve their own mental arithmetic. 90 minutes workshop for kids aged 5-10. Booking advised on booking you will be asked which one you would like to attend. Max 10 pupils per session. Suitable for ages 5-10. €2 per child. This is a drop-off session. Summer Camps Camps will start on the following dates: 11 July, 18 July, 25 July, 8 Aug,15 Aug & 22 Aug. Every summer, children between the ages of 5 and 12 come to our award winning camps to make new friends, learn new art techniques and explore their heritage in a fun and interactive way. Saturday, 30 April from 12-3pm Riverfest 2016 kicks off over the May Bank Holiday weekend and will showcase & celebrate all that’s great about Limerick City! The Hunt Museum will be running lots of fun family events to celebrate the legends of the River: hear storytelling, play games, come to the wishing ceremony, make your own Cata (river monster) and much more! Slow Art Day Saturday, 9 April, 12-1pm "It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see" - Henry David Thoreau Slow Art Day is the global all-volunteer event with a simple mission: help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. This year the Hunt Museum will be focusing on its new Contemporary Ceramics collection, looking at five new pieces of work. Bobby Kerr, Irish entrepreneur and businessman will be the guest speaker on the day. Booking is essential, tickets are €55. Proceeds from this event will be used to support Education and Outreach projects at The Hunt Museum. Thanks to our Friends loyal support, The Friends Council have been able to direct funds towards some great projects in the Education Department and have also made a significant contribution to the refurbishment of the education wing of the museum which begins this month. Join Friends for a guided tour of Curraghmore House, historic home of the 9th Marquis of Waterford which boasts some of the finest neo-classical rooms in Ireland and features the magnificent plaster work of James Wyatt and grisaille panels by Peter de Gree.
