Borneo & the Orangutans of Kalimantan ...escorted by Dr Stephen Van Mil & Kobe Steele Orangutans of Kalimantan Have you ever imagined visiting Kalimantan and seeing wild orangutans up close and personal? On our special escorted departure, led by Dr Stephen Van Mil and Kobe Steele, you will enjoy a very personal experience in the Borneo wilderness and see these wonderful animals. There’s an opportunity to meet orangutan infants at their care centre and to chat with volunteers and experts who have devoted their lives to the care and rehabilitation of these amazing animals. It’s here where you will learn about the projects that are keeping them alive. Stephen is a former veterinarian, a dedicated animal lover and a conservationist. His organisation, Animal Media, specialises in all aspects of media involving our wonderful creatures of the world. In conjunction with Fork Films, the award winning The Last Trimate was a world-released documentary narrated by Mel Gibson and featuring the amazing lifework of Birute Mary Galdikas and the orangutans of Indonesian Borneo. Itinerary Day 6: Friday 19 April 2013 After breakfast, we cruise back to Kumai and then transfer to the OFI Care Centre Day 1: Sunday 14 April 2013 Arrival at Singapore airport. Accommodation: Santika Hotel, Pontianak Accomodation: Hotel Blue Kecubun Day 3: Tuesday 16 April 2013 Today we will take a morning flight from Pontianak to Pangkalunbun. Upon arrival we will proceed by car to Kumai to board traditional klotok boats for a 2-3 hour cruise up the Sekonyer River to our jungle accomodation. Day 8: Sunday 21 April 2013 Today we will fly from Pangkalunbun to Pontianak where we will stay overnight. Accomodation: Santika Hotel, Pontianak Day 9: Monday 22 April 2013 Accommodation: Rimba Lodge, Tanjung Puting Today we will fly from Pontianak back to Singapore where our trip ends. National Park Day 4: Wednesday 17 April 2013 After an early breakfast, we will cruise upstream to Pondok Tanggui (feeding station #2). Feeding occurs each morning at approximately 7.30am and time is available for a gentle walk on the 3km loop track and a possible excursion further upstream in search of Proboscis or long tailed Macaque monkey. We then return to Rimba Lodge followed by an afternoon cruise a short way down stream to Tanjung Harapan (feeding station #3). We then again return to Rimba Lodge overnight. Accommodation: Rimba Lodge Day 5: Thursday 18 April 2013 After breakfast, we cruise upstream to the tributary “black water” stream that ultimately leads to Camp Leakey (feeding station #1). It is here that we will witness the 2.30pm feeding and have time to walk some of the many trails for possible sightings of orangutan. Accommodation: Sleeping overnight on a traditional klotok Flight Delays Domestic flights within Indonesia are subject to delay and/or rescheduling without notice. It is recommended you allow at least 1 or 2 days buffer before scheduling your homeward bound flight in case of delays. In the event your program is delayed or has to be rerouted you will be liable for any additional costs (eg. accommodation, air tickets, etc.) which you must pay in full at the time. On your return to Australia any unused services (i.e. exchange vouchers) will be refunded in full - providing there are no additional arrangements left unpaid or outstanding as a result of any delays or rerouting to your program. Highlights • Visit Tanjung Puting National Park, the base of Dr Galdikas, world renowned orangutan expert. Dr Galdikas was mentored by Dr Louis Leakey along with Diane Fossey and Jane Goodall. Camp Leakey, inside the Tanjung Puting National Park, is the site of the longest continuous study by a principal investigator of any nonhuman wild animal in the history of science. • Visit the care centre, normally closed to the public, and see how baby orangutans are given special attention. Participants in this programme are given exclusive access to the care centre. • Visit Lamandau Wildlife Reserve to see firsthand successfully rehabilitated orangutans who have graduated from the OFI Care Centre rehabilitation programme. • Walk through the forests of the Tanjung Puting National Park with local Dayak guides. • Cruise the Sekonyer River on a comfortable Klotok river boat.
