Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey 3 Notes on Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey 2013 The NAEDA Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey was emailed exclusively to selected dealers in the U.S. and Canada in January 2013. Over 1,000 dealers participated in this year’s survey. This includes a 22% response rate from NAEDA dealers and an increase of over 20% from last year’s response. Over 3,000 individual dealer ratings/evaluations were received and tabulated compared to 1,900 last year. This significant increase in the number of evaluations is likely attributed to more awareness from dealers regarding the importance of the survey and its results and from the importance many of the manufacturers place on the survey results as well. Several companies encouraged their dealers to participate in the survey through their dealer communications. Finally, and significantly, dealers were able to rate up to five manufacturers this year, up from only three options last year. This year’s survey continued with the incorporation of several improvements over previous surveys. The list of manufacturers was increase to 62 prominent manufacturers from 54 the previous year. Dealers were given the opportunity to rate their most significant equipment line first from a drop down list of these 62 manufacturers of agricultural, light industrial/construction and outdoor power equipment. Dealers could select and rate up to five manufacturers that they represent. The report contains valuable feedback and information about the relationship between dealers and their suppliers. Both the manufacturers and the dealers have found the data to have value for improving product and service quality and for promoting top-ranked products to consumers. Many manufacturers, for example, have expressed their support for the survey and for the results, good or poor. • In some instances, manufacturers have used the survey results to promote their performance to their dealer network and even to end-users. • They have also used the results as a means to support change and improvements in their organizations. Dealers have used the results: • To evaluate potential new product lines and companies to carry. • For competitive comparisons with brands they handle. • To communicate areas of strengths and needs for improvements of their represented manufacturers. The survey design continued to use expanded rating categories from 1 (not satisfied) to 7 (very satisfied). The previous scale used in the NAEDA survey was 0-4. Research has shown that a good scale should be at least 5 points as the gap from 0-1 is perceived differently than the gap from 1-2. Dealers were asked to rate manufacturers on the 1- 7 scale in the following 12 categories: 1. Overall Satisfaction 7. Return Privileges 2. Product Availability 8. Communication with Management 3. Product Quality 9. Warranty Procedures 4. Product Technical Support 10. Warranty Payments 5. Parts Availability 11. Marketing & Advertising Support 6. Parts Quality 12. Manufacturer Response to Dealer Needs /Concerns This report includes summaries of these 12 survey categories for 46 brands, compared to 38 brands last year. These brands received a sufficient number of responses necessary to provide meaningful analysis of results. Each brand’s mean score for each category is measured against the mean for all 46 manufacturers combined in bar graph form. The averages of evaluations of the categories are reported using the mean (simple arithmetic average) rather than the median of the data. Comparisons are also made within each manufacturers classification, 1) Major Tractor Manufacturer, 2) Ag/Shortline Manufacturer, or 3) Outdoor Power Equipment Manufacturer.
